This will be voted cold because it's alienware but heat from me. Got an outlet 17" r4 with gtx 1080 last month and was in perfect condition. Running without a hiccup and full 12mth on site warranty anyway.

how many of you in this thread are Dell employees lmao
i also had one dead pixel on mine. (i assume its a dead pixel - you cant see it on light colour screens but can see it on blacks and blues etc)

Got mine today too, IPS without G-Sync, prefer to have battery life and with the 1070 & it'll handle almost every game over 60fps at 1080p anyway so I didn't see the need for it.
Really nice laptop, pretty darn heavy (coming from msi gs60 6qe) but the build quality is fantastic, having said that the only real issue is that I have a dead pixel, It's not really a problem but It is a little annoying, given the price.
Has anyone else got their laptop now too? if so what are your thoughts?

Mine arrived today. It's a scratch and dent sale. However the actual case is perfect. Looked at it carefully and not one mark on it. Don't understand why it's described as scratch and dent. It did not have a alienware outer box but who cares

Yeah, that one is sold out now, and the rest are TN panels, I'll probably not buy one because of that. I think you have a good one there.
Oh and did the one you bought specifically say IPS in the descritption?

Lol, true, can't wait my hands on it but I can't help but feel I should of browsed more wisely and spent another £100 to get the i7-6820HK and 512 SSD equivalent, was rushing to purchase just in case It was sold out with each outlet item being 1 inventory in stock. OOPS.
Yes confirmed not once but by three different dell sales consultants that it's IPS G-sync I have... I shall know for sure once it comes.
Not great, 8gb of ram and 4k is too much for these gpu's imo.

thanks I bought one hopefully I like it.
I got the one with the 1070gpu and planning on connecting to a TV to game. hopefully it's as fast as a desktop machine
The GA only loses about 5% performance compered with a desktop using the gpu directly. Other external gpus are not quite as good but even they only lose about 10-15%, did you have any basis for this comment or were you guessing?

do you still have those early on issues with your laptop? what sort of battery life are you getting with the 4K screen?
Figo_Rulz11
17 May 17#48
thanks, oh you got the older version? any issues with it? what's the battery life and screen like? I ideally need the 99whr battery for my needs hence why I was looking at the latest model. but I've just been hearing horror stories so not sure if I should just wait for now.

Have the alienware 15 with the 970gtx amd have no complaints.Build quality excellent and an the addition of the graphics amplifier port means I can run a 1080ti along side it.Fair enough the amplifier enclosure cost me £100 but we'll worth it.Love alienware stuff and never had an issue.

Not recommended. An external GPU severely under performs. You would get the performance of a gtx 1070 with a gtx 1080 ti over thunderbolt.

15 May 17#14
what's their returns policy like?
BigRalph to ganon
17 May 17#46
They are very good with returns on new products, not sure on outlet. I got an AW 15 from them a year ago and to have the motherboard replaced 3 times because of issues. After the third time within a year I requested a refund because I didn't want it to happen again when my warrant had expired. After i returned it I ordered a new PC from them, but change my mind after it arrived (I was too used to having a laptop I couldn't get back into having a PC) and they refunded it no questions. There is also no cost to you of refunding and they arrange for a courier to collect it (weekdays only).

If you get a problem with a dell outlet laptop, don't expect good service.
I had to get a my credit card company to arrange a refund. Dell refused to take a faulty laptop in for repair, claimed it was a software issue.

Hello all
I have jumped down this rabbit hole before and it wasn't fun, this is about 4 or 5 years ago but I bought a referred Alienware computer and it ended up not working properly and not performing as it should, I had engineers come to my house and not able to fix it. Six, yes six replacement unit's later I ended up selling it on eBay because I didn't to deal with the bs which is dell customer service! I am sure that a lot of people have had some really good deals from them but don't think that I could every buy a referred one again let along a Dell computer again.

Cracking machines, I have the AW15 R3 8gb 1060, UHD upgraded to 16gb and it's blazingly fast, quiet and cool. Plenty of expansion potential, just lacks an SD card slot, otherwise it would be perfect for me.

a bit off topic but do you think the xps 15 9560 is worth it? I've heard a lot of quality issues with it. many thanks

I've just bought the 9550 with 4k screen and 56w battery so I get the sata drive bay free to use as well as the M.2 slot and think it's a great machine. I added a Samsung 960 Evo and it flies. I got 15% discount with my Son's NUS card.
One thing to note is if you want the extra warranty buy it at the time of the machine as it's discounted by 40%. I enquired after buying the machine and it was ridiculously expensive.

I bought one; there were a number of issues early on and the space bar is a bit of a dick. I still can't use VirtualBox without it bluescreening on boot.
Still an *excellent* laptop. The 4K screen is really nice. They are putting in crappier Toshiba M2 drives when they can't get the supplies of the fast drives, which is a bit of a **** take for such an expensive laptop.

Can anyone give me any advice on what to go for here, theres like 20 to choose from and i haven't got a scooby. I want to play gears/forza etc so looking for an i7 with 16gb ram but what graphics and screen?? Would appreciate any input, thanks

Took me awhile to pick out the aw13r3. Try go for 512gb ssd if you're going for the 13" model as I have couple of games installed pls office pro 2016 and it's already taken half the amount. In terms of memory, the stock Hynix ram is basic so don't bother spending more trying to get a 32gb or 16gb ram model. Better off buying another stick from crucial or Amazon yourselves.

Please be cautious of these as there was a number of overheating issues when they first came out, massive reddit thread showing the heat-sinks were not mounted properly to the motherboard causing temperature spikes of over 20 degrees in some cases on a single core. If you buy one make sure you do a stress test and temp read first. people have seen anything from 60 degree perfection (and quite frankly outstanding) to 99 degree shut down after 20 mins of gaming.

Just to add, these machine hold their value very well, sold my over 1 year old aw 17 r3 with 980m for £100 less than I bought it for and then spent a few £100 upgrading to the aw 13 r3 with 1060. I'll probably keep doing this every year as long as aw and nvidia keep improving their machines so much

best machines. got myself a 13r3 with the oled screen a few months ago. I couldn't go back to a normal screen now and its amazing I can max most games with a 13" (okay a huge 13") laptop

the 120hz if you play alot of games, or the 4k if you want to use it for other things. Got the 120hz myself couldnt be happier, colours do need a bit of tuning but found someones profile that makes it look alot better.

I got a normal dell (not alienware) scratch and dent from the outlet last week when they had a 20% code, honestly couldn't see a mark on it and very happy with the price for the spec, not a touch on this but i5, fhd, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, some sort of (weak) dedicated gfx for £350 all in.

I love my AW14 - 3 years old and runs like a new machine still. I've had so many laptops that decline to almost uselessness within 2 years. This was worth the extra money IMO.

15 May 17#8
go for a scratch and dented normally cheaper and mine was 100% perfect couldn't find an marks on it.
I got a AW 15 r3 6700hq 1070 120hz the other month, banging machine, new update for forza gives 90fps, gears 4 at 90fps, titanfall 2 at 120fps. great machines and I could get a desktop with the same bits as cheap. Undervolted mine at the weekend dropped 10c which is good, as I will say they are pretty loud and hot.

This is a review of the razer core (which is a thunderbolt egpu) and it also shows some benchmarks of the AGA (using alienwares faster port) as you can see the AGA is about 5% drop in performance (with the 980ti and 1080) the razer core loses more.
here are some more benchmarks with the AGA https://na.alienwarearena.com/ucf/show/220874/boards/technical-support-1/ForumPost/graphics-amplifier-performance-analysis-with-the-alienware-13-r1
(this is old with the low powered cpu on the 13 r1 but still the graphics performance loss is around 5%)
Do you have a single benchmark for the AGA giving worse performance?
