I never understand why people take these.
The human body has around a 3000 calorie store of glycogen in the liver. After that it will start burning fat. These gimmicks are just useful for the electrolytes so therefore why not just drink water with an electrolyte tablet dissolved in it!?
If you need more energy than the ~3000 cal store in the liver you should be asking yourself whether you are pushing yourself too hard and damaging your health as your body is not designed for that kind of energy expenditure.

I feel like I have to wade in... Having done many endurance activities, these are a god-send. Great find, if you dont like them, don't buy them. Don't forget that it's not just your body that needs these sugars, your brain cannot function without sugar, try riding the last ten miles of a hundred mile cycle, or the last two miles of a marathon without extra energy. Brain without sugar = mistakes, injury or death.

I use energy gels on all sorts of distances on my bike, even on only 20 miles.
I have them as they give me a boost of energy when I feel I'm getting tired.
I'd probably be better off not using them - certainly in terms of exercise/weight loss. But in my eyes, anything that makes my exercise more enjoyable to me means I will be happier to do it more regularly.

What the living Christ are you talking about. Sugar is essential to your existence. There's a difference between food and fuel, and how your body processes what you eat and drink before during and after exercise. You have windows when exercising where your body is especially receptive to sugar because THATS WHAT IT NEEDS.
Please, I'd love to hear your thoughts on protein shakes. Probably as ridiculous as that on sugar.

Your body will always use fat as a fuel source, however the further up the zones you go the more your body needs to burn glycogen, all the way up to threshold and past it to anaerobic. The percentage of glycogen increasing dramatically the harder you're going.
Once that runs out, your body has to purely rely on fat, which is can't convert quickly, hence you hit the wall, or bonk, depending on your sport. Even the best fat adapted keto athletes can't ride or run at the highest intensities without sugar. Your body simply cannot convert fat fast enough.

Burning fat is inefficient and just isn't going to give you that fast delivery of energy.
This is a hot deal on energy gels for hard exercise, not cheese rolls and riding your bike without breaking into a sweat.

These are a bit too thick for me. I prefer the ISO Gels which are also on offer. I do long distance triathlons, and it's not physically possible to get the calories in you from any other source really. As for the guy having one half way through Parkrun, you never know he might be using that as his high end training, having run there and/or back - that's what I do.

I guess the reason you don't understand is because you've never exercised hard enough. Whilst I don't use these myself, if you're planning on cycling for more than a couple of hours at any sort of pace then you need fuel -
electrolytes and water won't cut it but do give it a try and report back...
As for exercising too hard - your body has ways of telling you you're doing that well before any real damage to health. A 3000 calorie bike ride isn't a bid deal for anyone with a good level of fitness - a lot of people will do that in their weekly club run.

Why do we use these, because carrying water when running or doing other sports is rather difficult. Stopping and waiting for a tablet to dissolve in a drink would rather destroy your times. Generally speaking if you wait for your energy to drop to zero it is too late. Most sports people would benefit from these when an event or training lasts longer than around an hour, as the concensus is the body will use reserves by this time. I am no doctor but my experience in following these guidelines compared to using just water or nothing show a substantial difference in performance. Others may experience different results.
