That's a while ago now, and it was dodgy vendor installed firmware. Ask for a sealed box and you're fine.

Select delivery country as USA and it vanishes. Then when you check out select the correct country.
I don't recommend that as an alternative to this deal. Other than the memory difference mentioned above, that eBay listing is also the non B20 China Version, which the seller states has a custom ROM and they have a warning that flashing a newer ROM will void their warranty. In order to install a custom ROM, they open the box and could have installed other crapware/malware alongside it. However, this deal is a B20 Global Version that will be sealed and pre-installed with the official Global ROM.

So are we saying, that if I were to order a Chinese branded (i.e. Xiaomi, Lenovo, Cubot, Oppo, Vivo, etc..) phone from China but providing it has a Global ROM installed (not Custom ROM), it's fully sealed upon arrival, and say Android 6 (or greater) installed - I shouldn't experience any nasty malware or spyware with it?
dreadzone101 to nad12
5 Apr 17#18
Not sure about other brands but for Xiaomi phones, Global ROM can be installed by the sellers if it's the Chinese version of the phone that they're selling, because a factory sealed Chinese version comes pre-installed with China ROM. Sellers install either their own custom/vendor ROM or the official global ROM so that it has Play Store etc for the Global Market. In this scenario, there's risk of malware etc. The "Global Version", however is different. It's a release for another region outside of China and it is factory pre-installed with the Official Global ROM. For a number of phones, the Global Version also comes with more bands compared to China Version. Sometimes sellers will sell both the Global Version of a phone and the Chinese Version with Global ROM. They'll usually be clear on which version it is, and some have comparison tables:
As you can see the Chinese Version has a pink "Official Global ROM" over the image but it will have been installed by seller as it's "opened box", whereas "International Version" (Global Version) would come pre-installed with Global ROM and is sealed.

5 Apr 17#19
Thanks very much. I wasn't aware of this. I always thought the Chinese manufacturers made some very good phones, for lesser prices than the equivalent UK sold device. However, I always steered clear due to the worry of malware/spyware. Now knowing the above I feel assured that purchasing a 'Global Version' with the Global ROM installed at factory, and it being sealed, I should receive a perfectly safe phone to use with no nasty surprises. Thanks again.

5 Apr 17#21
GearBest have the same phone but stating two versions - 'Global Version + UK Plug' and the 'International Version'. The Global Version is £15 more expensive and can be shipped from China or HK. The International Version can only be shipped from HK.
Any ideas on what's going on here?
dreadzone101 to nad12
5 Apr 17#29
Judging by the Q&A asking about the differences, the International Version appears to be Gearbest's way of saying it just has the Global ROM installed but the band specs would suggest it's Chinese version since it doesn't list B20. The "Global Version" + UK Plug listing however does state B20 so that's the same version as this deal. If you are getting from Gearbest. Be aware of their different 2/16GB and 2/32GB listings since the pricing variation is a bit odd. Some seem to have a "Netmosa" option too. No idea what that one is.

I totally agree with this statement. Like others, in the past I have ordered many items through AliExpress (all being for an amount that I can afford to lose) without any problems but it must be understood that you have no UK consumer protection when goods are purchased from the Far East and the AliExpress (so called) 'guarantee' is as good as useless, as I have found out.
dreadzone101
5 Apr 17#23
Yeah, I think so. The same seller has a number of Redmi 4A listings. Ones with "Global Version" in title like this deal, should be sealed and the ones with "Original" in title or "Global MIUI/ROM" tagged on the image corner will be China version which they've flashed with Global ROM.
badboyofrock
5 Apr 17#25
That's interesting, and makes some sense as I've always thought they use the word 'original' where some would use 'genuine'.
dreadzone101
5 Apr 17#26
I think they do use it to have that meaning too. Because in the "Global Version" listings, they have a stamp over the primary image saying 100% Original at the top, even though they don't have the word in the title, which would suggest they just mean 'genuine' in that sense. Whereas the differences in the titles, would suggest 'Original' is meant as 'initial/first' model (Chinese).

AliExpress is a market place no different to eBay except unlike eBay it provides the sellers with its free delivery. I have not received my item but AliExpress have insisted that i continue to wait. It's been over two months and now that their waiting period has expired they've stopped replying to my proposals in the 'dispute'. Like i said better of going with Banggood, Gearbest and Geekbuying because they're the best of a bad bunch.
dcx_badass
6 Apr 17#37
Well I've had 5-10 refunds from them very quickly without a single issue. Where as Gerbest/Banggood normally just try and fob you off with site credit, aliexpress are bigger than amazon, that wouldn't have happened if they were as bad as you make out.
A coupon gets added when you put the item into basket/cart "Get £16.26 off when you spend over £89.41 in this store." You also have to select "Ship to U.S" before adding to basket, to get the full deduction otherwise it'll add a warranty fee.

I very much doubt they will care, most of these companies don't. I don't think that the odd person complaining or threatening to do this impacts them much or that they even know what HUKD is; because people will still buy cheap phones where there is an option to do so even with bad reviews.

Think of this phone as a competitor to last year's Moto G or the Huawei P8 Lite. Xiaomi phones are usually more stylish then most of the competition.
The phone you should look at is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. It's an amazing phone and on par with OnePlus in terms of styling. Performance wise I'd compare it to the Samsung Galaxy A 2017 edition which goes for £349.99 sim free.
Here is the cheapest seller on Ali Express at the minute and this is the global version which will work on all UK 4g networks. It's a beautiful and brilliant phone.

Redmi Note 5 hasn't been announced or released anywhere yet so it'll be Redmi Note 4, not 5 that you're seeing. It was announced/released in India in January. The Global Version with B20 was released in the last month or two and is the phone the previous person is talking about. It might be either Singapore or Malaysia version as their versions have B20. It's essentially the RN4 equivalent to the Taiwan RN3 SE. The Global Version Redmi Note 4 has been posted here a few times.

I raised the claim, I think the seller gets 5-10 days to respond, if the tracking doesn't work, or in the case of flash memory (which I no longer buy) I upload a h2testw screenshot, then aliexpress rules in my favour and I get a refund in the standard 2-3 days. No problems, sometimes the seller will refund once you raise a legitimate issue though.
Have you not read this thread or used google? Aliexpress is a market place, the reviews are only as good as the seller, use a good seller and you're fine. The aliexpress platform is fine as indicated by the fact they are the biggest retail platform in the world.
I was actually replying to someone who mentioned about Trustpilot reviews. As far as AliExpress are concerned there are over 3.5 thousand reviews, some good but mostly bad, and I always consider reading of others experiences and then make my own mind up, bearing in mind that you will not be covered (as in this case) by any consumer protection laws .
Like others I was only highlighting possible problems with using this company like them requiring video evidence of an item not being received or a battery not charging before they will consider dealing with their 'dispute' system - are they for real !!!!.
I wouldn't dream of trying to convince anyone not to purchase from a particular source as I'm mindful of others 'it won't happen to me' mentality but more importantly the saying about a fool and his money.

If you look for evidence to support negative views towards anything you'll find it but it'll be a skewed perspective which never paints the full picture. Amazon has twice the review amount and has a lower rating. Stating there's 3.5K Aliexpress reviews gives no indication on the amount of customers they serve or how many of them make transactions without a problem. The amount of people who have had bad experiences could be less than 0.01% of that. When you buy something online, you expect it to arrive on your door without any issues. When it happens, people don't go seeking review sites to tell others that things went as expected but if there is a problem, people are inclined to let others know and warn them away. So you'll always evidence to suggest possible problems but this doesn't indicate to anyone the likelihood of encountering them.

7 Apr 17#62
Your reply beggars belief given its irrelevance to my post, which clearly you didn't understand.
The facts are simple, if you purchase from AliExpress you will not be covered by our consumer laws or (if the purchase is under £100) Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act or any protection PayPal might offer (AliExpress don't accept PayPal payments). The only protection you get is 'good will', and that appears to be geared towards the seller, not the buyer.
So should you have a problem (faulty/substandard goods, non delivery etc) then you run the risk of kissing your money goodbye.
People use review sites, and ones like HUKD, to advise their experiences with products and/or a supplier thus giving the reader the chance to make an informed decision before making a purchase.
If you're the type of person who prefers to 'bury their head in the sand' then that's your business.

well, I'm not saying you are wrong but the Redmi note 5 is definitely whats being discussed in India atm so not sure what you mean when you say there's been no announcements or releases of the Note 5? if there's even a small chance of a global note 5 release in the next few months I'm happy to wait.
Aliexpress include a 1 year warranty, not saying its any good but it does offer more benefits than you get from gearbest or banggood. I've been offered £10 for a defective 8 month old phone from banggood, pretty poor considering it should be still under warranty.

No, they are correct, the Redmi Note 4 Mediatek version only came out late last year in China and the Snapdragon version has only just come out in India, the Note 5 will be 6 months away minimum, you always get fake news sites making up random junk about future Xiaomi's that is never ever correct this early.
