The regular deal for these speakers is back on! Don't forget you need an amp to drive these as they are passive speakers! (instore only)

Speaker legends don't get much bigger than the Wharfedale Diamond 9.0.
The original small hi-fi speaker
It's hard to believe that the original Wharfedale Diamond is now past its thirtieth birthday. All those decades ago, it was the Diamond speaker that proved, for the first time, that excellent quality sound could be achieved from a small, budget speaker. Since then there have been dozens of imitators, but the Diamonds remain amongst the best available.
Solid construction
The cabinet isn't just compact, it's also very solid. This combination gives the Diamonds an extremely accurate sound quality as the cabinet doesn't flex or vibrate. Equally impressive are the drive units. A soft dome tweeter gives the clarity and smoothness of sound you'd expect from a more expensive speaker, while the woofer cone uses a carbon fibre type weave to offer extremely taut and responsive bass.
Surprisingly powerful
With a front port, these bass reflex speakers are punchier than you might expect and in no way could they ever be described as tinny. Over all, they may be small but the sound is grown-up, with excellent staging, realism and surprisingly powerful.
Hi-fi connections
It's not just the major aspects of the design that Wharfedale have got right, it's the details, too. Proper 4mm banana sockets will accept thick cable and offer the best type of connection. Threaded sockets at the rear make for secure and easy bracket attachment.
At £100 these speakers were clearly market leaders. Now we're offering them at this bargain price, the Diamond 9.0 speakers are a gem of a deal!

Would 2 pairs of these work well as front L/R and surround L/R speakers for a 5.1 AV receiver?
(I won't mention it's an Onkyo...)

Yes that would work but you may be better off getting the Diamond 9.1 for the fronts for a tad more punch. Match this with a 9.0cc centre (commonly on ebay for £40-60) and you've got a great starter set up!
All depends on budget of course, but with these 9 series you can't go wrong really. I've had the 9.0, 9.1 and the 9.cc centre for three years now. Very happy.

I personally didn't like using them in a home cinema setup. They sounded a bit flat & lacked that punch, drive, sparkle, excitement (and other words used in hi-fi magazines) that's needed for movie soundtracks. Sounded ok with music though.

Would probably match well with most AVs.

An amp in addition to the A/V amp?

No, AV Receivers include an amplifier. If yours has an output of 10W or greater per channel it'll be fine.

I can't remember exactly what the offer was, but can you still get the £10 off for signing up to their newsletter?

Has anyone used a warranty for passive speakers?

I would bet that with all the speakers that have ever been made that some one somewhere might well have.

Yes, my first decent compact hifi speakers were Audio research with something like a 3 year warranty. One tweeter started to sound distorted after a couple of years. Even though I'd moved to Belgium by then AR sent me a replacement to fit myself.

An amp is just an amp,any will do, it doesn't matter what speakers you have, just check the impedance and power is in range, which 99% of the will be. They will all sound the same, no matter how many people try to tell you otherwise.
i got some old sony hi fi speakers for front ( from old hifi unit ) ss lb 355, quite big but powerful and a centre speaker dali , would these suit more rear , as them speakers are more franskstion

Unless these arrive DOA then a 6 year warranty on speakers is pretty much worthless.
Just saying.

i`m not a huge audiophile, but there`s a difference between a decent set of speakers and cheap ones, trust me.

Something like this to dip your toes in the water would suffice.
He said that the amp is independent to the speakers, so as far as which amp to get, it doesn't matter which speakers you have.

I was looking at getting the lepy amp for these as well as the pioneer sslw500 to accompany it all, but as I am a bit of a novice to all this, could anyone confirm for me where I am expected to connect the subwoofer to the amp? I assume that the speakers will connect into the speaker connections but where does the subwoofer connect to?

You'll need an amp with a separate sub output, the lepy/facor ones are just an rca pair for left+right channels - great for a tiny portable mini amp for two speakers. In addition, the SSLW500 needs amplifying as well - most sub outputs on amps are pretty low power and expect a sub amp at the far end of the cable.
I'm not sure what new mini offerings are like, but if I were you I'd be looking for a cheap second hand AV Receiver off of fleabay or something for a similar price, with a remote control and in+outputs designed for doing what you want. Pair an active sub with a cheap onkyo or yamaha or technics receiver and you'll have a reasonable budget 2.1 setup.
back on topic - picked up rev6's little blue amp + a pair of open box 9.1s from superfi for £75 and they're a fantastic portable/desk speaker setup. At the distance I'll be using them a sub wouldn't add much, and they go more than loud enough when in my face.
