I have no idea why anyone buys a hard drive that has most likely been returned because its faulty and then has a 6 month warranty compared to 2 or 3 year warranty for potentially 40 quid more.

Any advice on what software to use to stress test these when they arrive?

I've had my recertified DL4100 NAS and 4 x recertified 4TB hard drives well over a year if not two years now and had no issues, initially I had problems - one DOA and the NAS exchanged under the 30 day guarantee but since nothing.
I back up everything more than once.........or twice or three times anyway.

western digital's warranties are useless anyway i bought a brand new hdd from ebay which failed after 3 weeks and they refused to honour the warranty as they said it wasn't bought from an approved seller even thou the item was boxed and sealed with the warranty sticker when purchased and further sealed with a second sticker inside the packaging on the anti static bag i on principle would avoid this company and recommend people look elsewhere the fact they have repaired this item previously is also an alarm bell as to its life expectancy anyway

bought one 1TB last summer and it stopped working after few weeks...I rather pay more for new and peace of mind than throw money away...

I wouldn't store any data on this rubbish. They would not last even 6 months. Even if you got receipt nothing will help if you lose your data....

Which means a fault on the control board or user error.
They don't have a factory full of technicians taking these things apart in cleanrooms and hosing down the platters.


Actually, try re-reading the sentence "They don't normally get "damaged" and subsequently suffer a reduction in lifetime", you seem to have misinterpreted it.

actually you are completely wrong.
hard drives unlike many electronics have many moving parts and very sensitive to even light physical impact,they can easily get damaged with everyday use.

And these are failed drives that have been 'repaired'....

My experience with these recertified drives has so far been good. None of them have failed so far. Of course most of my data tends to be HD videos of documentaries which could be replaced. I just download them so that I can watch it offline. Nobody in their right mind should use these as their main drive or as a backup mechanism but mostly as a scratch storage which can be replaced if required. In reality new drives do fail and there is no evidence that probability of a new drive failing is lower than that for a recertified drive even though most people's opinion would be biased against recertified drives. I buy new when available below £20/TB (last I had a 5TB Seagate for £109.99 with a £10 Argos voucher just before Christmas 2016) however I have not seen any new drives at that price point in the new year.

I've never had a recertified drive fail. Had about 10. 2-5tbs in size. Each to their own but it's kinda nice to know any issue was sorted. I use them as backup drives primarily. I personally wouldn't send back any hard drive anyway if it failed. Unless it was fully encrypted.

I would imagine this was true for some of the original 3TB Seagate drives when the number of OOB failures were at an all time high. Reality now most drives have a very low OOB failure rate so chances of getting a bad new drive is slim. However actively buying a bad drive is surely likely to increase your risk. Some fault causes don't get detected only the symptoms. Some of these repaired drive may likely have the original fault that caused the failure previously. I had a brand new HP640 G1 which had a damaged heat pipe from the factory. Wasn't picked up in QC but was only obvious when I challenged tested the CPU and it reached 95C. Contacted HP sent off the laptop came back same problem. I complained they came to my home and replaced the CPU heat pipe and its been fine since. If the fault wasn't detected in diagnostic when a company knows what's wrong how can a company be completely sure about a drive when they don't know what's wrong with it...

I agree. In the world of IT a file does not exist unless it is saved in 3 different places. I personally have a server which is a mirrored raid with important stuff on it. Then I have a 4TB drive I back up the backup to. Which lives in a fire proof safe when not in use. I would like to have a 4th stored at another site but logistics dictate that this is unworkable for me. Cloud storage isn't secure enough. Drives do die but in 30 odd years of building them I've had 4 die. 2 my own fault one shorted control board. One kicked over at a party while running. That went back and was likely recertified so some poor **** got a lemon back from Seagate. The other 2 drives that died were a Samsung 1tb portable which got a stuck read head out of the box and a drive in my first computer that was close to 15 years old.

The length of the warranty is a marketing exercise, not an indication of a drive that "WD itself assumes will fail prematurely." If the full retail warranty was offered, it may negatively impact on the demand for and the cost of its new drives.

The actual *drive* is rarely at fault, it's the enclosures / controllers / power circuits which die and get replaced in deals like this. WD have had some poor enclosures recently, but they have never caused an issue with the drive inside.

Repairing a HDD is expensive - shipping back to a clean environment, diagnostics, part swapping, testing, reshipping it out, warranty in case it fails again, etc....It's just not often economical.

Bad sectors on a disk can't be repaired, they can only be remapped. This stands true even at the factory.
The motor / heads can be, assuming no damage to the physical disk, along with the PCB on the drive. Beyond that, there isn't much they can do.

Still, I agree that the warranty isn't great on these and I'd be cautious too. It's too short for me to buy one.

Reasonable statement. I remember a post a while back that suggested the recertified drives were potentially less likely to be defective (on receipt) than a retail drive as each certified drive has been phsically tested. My limited general knowledge of mechanical drive failure instances are typically not long after initial use, or after an extended period, in which case the 6months warranty should be sufficient to cover the initial-use period and beyond, and the reduced cost is the incentive to consider the purchase.

I bought a wd new model with 3 year European warranty for 110 fairly recently. A hard drive that has been recertified is often a drive that has been tested and found not to have a detectable fault at the time, not necessarily that it's been repaired. As anyone who knows anything about computers a inherent fault is often not detected by software and is only obvious when a drive dies.
Personally if you are buying a drive for a backup of important data I want to start with a drive that isn't a factory second. The extra money is worth the reduced risk of your drive being a Friday afternoon drive. Also if it does die you have a 3 year warranty to get a replacement. If you have to buy a new recertified drive every 6 months its a far more expensive drive.
This site is designed to provide value not the cheapest thing that exists. This is only value to someone who is using it as a throw away console expansion drive.

The worst most unreliable drives go into these units with very high failure rates, this is before they are returned as faulty and recertified.

DR appears to have interpreted your warranty claim as a return request under the 30day return guarantee. Suggest you contact DR again and make unquestionably clear that the reason for contact is a warranty claim, not a return guarantee.

So you asked for a refund outwith their 30 day refund policy and they refused. Why did you not make a warranty claim?

I added the detail to my post buddy. I replied with never again and that stands, 30 days is worthless to me. Clearly the device is not up to being a backup device if it has a lifespan of 30 days

What reasons did they provide for refusal - surely if there is a 6 month limited warranty that should be provided ? You can use chargeback if you used a Credit Card for the transaction.

I just had a disk from here fail and it was two months old and they refused to replace so no it is not six months.

Does anyone know what speed the My Book Hard drives are? I plan to get a Scorpio when it launches, and from the sounds of it, with the 4K textures I might need a faster Hard drive than the typical 5200rpm found in portable hard drives. Though maybe I should wait till E3 and see what's confirmed.

Grabbed myself a My Passport Ultra 2TB Red (Recertified) from a deal on this site, this was April 2015. Never had a problem. Also, a friend sold me used WD passport back in Uni in 2010. It's still going strong.

Funny note, he sold me his WD for £50 because my £130 LaCie "rugged" I had bought for Uni projects had crapped out on me multiple times (and lost precious files... weep).

Shame about the warranty but if it was 2-3 years then why would you ever buy a new drive?

Also if you lose data cause a drive dies then that is your own fault. You should be backing up - always.
