sounds a bit like freedompop but different.

+4p connection fee per call?
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #3
Only using the 'calling card' feature, over data no connection fee
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #4
It is not sim dependant, register any number - it does not even need to be the sim in the mobile
Been using it for months for free landlines/international texts.
patcho
29 Apr 17 #5
Even more like freedompop then.... You don't need a sim for that either for calls n text.
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #6
Yes you do need a sim with FP, and a monthly fee - Tesco calling is not like that, go read the website.
patcho
29 Apr 17 #7
No you don't. I'm using a 3 data rewards sim now but I still have the fp app to text and the very occasional call. I use 3 if i need good quality  .
But you 100% don't need a sim to use their "free calls and text app" just a account.

It works with a tablet with no sim slot too

Just tried this and it did not give an option to not use the calling card even though I am connected to wifi so charged me for a call from my PAYG sim am I missing something here?

29 Apr 17 #9
Not sure that this app is needed unless the person you are calling has no internet. I can call relatives abroad for free using WhatsApp and I can Skype call for free.

Cheers OP :sunglasses:
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #11
You need a sim sent to you ie disclosing your personal details, you also have no free international calling or texts with FP, you are comparing chalk with cheese.
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #12
Exactly that, calls are from the app to regular numbers, not app to app calls. No internet access needed by call receiver.
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #13
Calling card is via a regular a call, it charges 4p connection that way, via the app & internet connection calls to UK mobiles are 1p with no connection fee. Check the app settings, should route via wifi/data if settings are correct.

29 Apr 17 #17
You register your mobile number with the app.
winchman
29 Apr 17 #18
So you use your inclusive minutes and you get charged for the call abroad, if you are NOT with Tesco, is that right?
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #19
No the app uses data/wifi - select such in app settings.
makie1
29 Apr 17 #20
What is call quality like....using EE PAYG. Prices are crazy. 1p for mobiles n free text over wifi is excellent . woohoooo
winchman
29 Apr 17 #21
Ok, got it, yes, seen in the settings, 'prefer wifi'.
But if there is no wifi or you have the data on your phone off, then it will use your inclusive minutes if you are not with Tesco..
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #22
On a iPhone with wifi/data off placing a call means the iPhone pop up "+44 XXX XXX XXXX cancel/call" comes up so you know its going to use sim, no idea about Antroid ? Also ios app has wifi only for when roaming.
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #23
Good for me on 3 3G & EE 3G & 4G. Wifi also great.
winchman
29 Apr 17 #24
Ok, that's good, makes it clear, I guess it would be the same with android. Android has the same wifi only option for roaming.

29 Apr 17 #25
right I'm testing it, is their now way to make the app receive sms? it's a shame of you can't
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #26
No incoming texts go to the sim number registered to app, outgoing via app send with that registered number.
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #27
Thanks for feedback for other Antroid users

29 Apr 17 #28
If you have no internet connection and are using Tesco Mobile calls to the 03 access number are free, think you pay the 4p connection though, texts would obviously need data connection.
PaulT82
29 Apr 17 #29
Do you need to add some credit before you can take advantage of the free UK landline calls, or can you just download the app and call UK landlines free forever?
winchman
29 Apr 17 #30
It says if you use the app you don't pay the connection charge. https://www.tescointernationalcalling.com/calling-app/
The connection charge only seems to apply when you use a calling card, not the app, doesn't seem to differentiate between wifi calling and using your minutes whilst using the app.
itm
29 Apr 17 #31
I've just selected "prefer wifi" and attempted a call to a landline. I got a message saying that I had insufficient credit (I haven't topped up). So it seems that wifi calls to landlines aren't entirely free?
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #32
That's why I added think you may pay 4p, I'm not on Tesco to try it out, sure a Tesco mobile customer can try and update the thread.
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #33
Strange ? I have the £1 free and have been using it to text and call landlines.
seaniboy
29 Apr 17 #34
You have 180 days, then you must top-up, £3 minimum at Tesco, or £5 online/calling/PayPoint, you may be able to delete account and reactivate ?
Reebok.Ron
30 Apr 17 #35
OK but I read that as meaning whatever the app quotes as the rate does not include the connection fee, not that there won't be a connection fee. I'm no doubt wrong but I'd like to be convinced. Obviously if someone has made a call and it only charged a flat 1p per minute and no 4p connection feee then that's pretty conclusive. Has anyone done that?
AndyRoyd
30 Apr 17 #36

Don't think it should make a difference whether you are with Tesco, sounds like provided you use the app and not the card, you won't pay the connection fee, that's how it sounds anyway.

How long does the unlimited landline last? Someone on here said 180 days but on the app it says unlimited for landline in the uk?
seaniboy

I know right? internationally at least Tesco beat the EU, they should have regulated roaming worldwide by EU telcos - customer pays wholesale rate outside EU unless telco discounts under wholesale cost to consumer. One day!

Good spot!
Can confirm £3 on Apple/iOS app showing, Tesco making false claims in anything and everything to do with money X)

Not going to complain with the Freebies on offer, they only update it to £5 minimum everywhere...that's Tesco for you!

Wonder who provides the service ? I thought o2 but with the Ozzie recorded voice I'm assuming it is a AU company - and most AU telcos always have cheap calls to the UK, hanging on like they never had a 1986 Brexit X)

From the T&Cs

https://www.tescointernationalcalling.com/terms-and-conditions/?icid=ICC_mainnavhelp_flyout_terms#-promotional-codes-and-referral-bonus

When you top-up your credit will last for 180 days from the last time you incurred a chargeable service.

That is pretty standard, so long as you spend some of the £1 credit every 180 days, in theory you should be able to keep a positive balance and therefore keep the free SMS and landline.

For those looking to use this for international SMS text, the app currently does not support non-English character.
If you send a message containing non-English, it will show up in the app fine but the receiver will see those characters as "?????" instead. Sender see no warning.

I e-mailed their support team, and they won't even acknowledge this as an issue. They just say "Unfortunately, the App is only supportive in the Latin format..."
The reply I've got.

I guess when it's free to text internationally they are not going to invest in programmers to do such which is fair enough, English is the international language after all, if Tesco was say Polish it would support polish and the international language English.

I guess you could ask the receiver to use google translate ? Pesky, but free is free after all!

Absolutely brilliant for anyone on,say, the Three 3-2-1 sim deal, which charges THREE PENCE (already a bargain) for UK calls.. This makes it almost 70% cheaper! :stuck_out_tongue:

Top up £3 at Tesco, you need to do this every 180 days anyway. I mean £6 a year to use as you like (roaming in a country ?) for international texts and 1p UK mobile calls is a bargain anyway, no one comes near it.

I signed up like months ago, still have £1 free credit - I have to do £3 top up by mid May to keep my free international texts going, £3 would buy me 14 international texts on +Net Mobile at 21p a pop oO

30 Apr 17 #75
Would imagine you could log in app on several devices, one person needs to activate via a mobile number - unless Tesco only allow one log in at a time ?

If you can log in on multiple apps that might be great for carers and the like, for instance a mobile handed around family/carers could be logged as the app mobile number with everyone logged in ? Or a family mobile number number as a group text ? You just text the family mobile number and all apps logged in as such get a message.

I can't test such as my Android tablet is not here at the moment, maybe someone could try and report back to us ?

This deal with Tesco Mobile data bundles (higher data bundles up to 8GB) than o2 payg offer and even on the o2 PAYG Classic Plan 5p MB/min/text actually makes Tesco Mobile much more feesible as a competitor to the main 4 and including Tesco Mobile 50% owner o2.

£13 buys 2GB on o2, £20 8GB on Tesco Mobile, can also use the Triple Credit payg plan and have £40 bonus credit for the month. Good for high users. Loads calls, texts, data and mms for domestic & international use for £20 a month between TM and TIC app.

I've had one of these for years. And it came in very useful when I was abroad last year and needed to call my bank urgently and speak to them for a long time on several occasions.

BUT I don't know if it's me being a bit dim but I can't get the text messaging to work properly. If I send a text message to someone in the uk then it does get to them but with a different phone number to my mobile number that I sent it from. And if they then 'reply' it doesn't get to me. Maybe it's been sorted but I had this problem for more than a year. Though as I say it may be me rather than them.

All it all though, I have found it good especially when I want to make international calls to people/organisations who aren't on whatsapp. In fact this post gave me a timely reminder to top up my Tesco calling card. Thanks to the original poster.

Had another look at the terms - further down it gives more details on the Validity Period which contradicts the earlier statement about chargeable events:

Credits.......are valid for 180 days from the time of purchase or the date of your last top-up within the 180 days (“Validity Period”).

Still a pretty good deal as it seems you don't lose your top-up so long as you do another within 180 days.

seaniboy
30 Apr 17 #117
Yeah, as I said I read differently other places but the terms seem to change depending on where you find them...
Tesco and account management conflicts... seems are to be a reoccurring theme within the group!

I just made a chargable call over wifi, 99p credit but expiry date did not change, so a top up 180 days for £3 is nothing really, if the backhaul is in another country then £3 doubles as a minumun in most currencies.

As you mentioned still a great deal though nowhere comes closer, free landlines, international texts and 1p UK mobile + £6 a year credit/recharge a year to spend on other calls. X)

Trying to add the credit via an Android, Moto G4 phone.
seaniboy
30 Apr 17 #120
Yes that's why you register with your mobile number, calls and text outwards show like you are using your mobile as normal to the receiving end

Incoming calls and texts go to your phone not the app, no data - no problem. Just remember to call/text out from the app

Skype is all hype, same as Nokia...but buy BUY! lol I used to use a incoming AU number years ago and the cost kept going up and up, it was a platinum landline number but the cost was not worth it, I found calling AU cheaper with 18185 etc half my sub costs for Skype incoming so I started telling people to email/message/one ring me to call them back. Skype is hype - marketing, if it was so successful (like the Microsoft/Orange Windows Messenger) why is everyone using other cheaper platforms ?

The trouble is, we `ve been shafted for YEARS by the telecoms, WhatsApp calls have helped the consumer enormously, service providers HATE it (:D ), but still they extort us by outrageous rates for texts/calls outside our allowances, diabolical tariffs for international calls (only recently-reduced calls to Eurozone after protests  ) while we still suffer "connection charges" as well as the dubious "line rental " for services to our homes. The industry needs a shake up.... for their years of shake down. (_;)

Well when government (unqualified accountants) can't run a party in a brewery it's cheaper and 'open market' to sell the taxpayers assets off to for-profit organisations to save the tax payer by turning them in to consumers who will pay more with weaker regulation.

I've asked Ofcom in their latest consultation about BT line rental to voice only customers to stop using the PUBLIC Post Office term 'line rental' as it is a Openreach Network Access Fee & charge consumers the wholesale rate instead of trying to give itself work by 'regulating' BT only and telling its licence holders the 'access fee' cannot be profit led and stop voice only and BT Basic being solely delivered by BT giving consumers no CHOICE but BT on cost alone. I also asked Naked ADSL/Fibre be opened up.

Consumers need to lead with Ofcom consultations, itself or telecoms won't do as we want unless many make it clear.

Exactly, the app is just the gateway to the whole world telephones not just other WhatsApp users. I have WA but the person who messages me most is HUKD
seaniboy
1 May 17 #137
Just as well AU have priceplans like (that insipred) T-Mobile Flext - cos TIC users are going to cost our contacts a fortune worldwide replying X)
seaniboy
1 May 17 #138
Awesome! Thanks for input W, is CI mobiles 1p ? Could you try ?

Assume it will be as calling a +44 number outside the U.K. includes them usually (just UK telcos rip us off, dependencies my bottom), when I was in AU it was 75% a minute cheaper for me to call the UK with no flagfall(connection fee) to a call forwarding service then to a AU number.

My contacts had 2 entries one for calling, one for texting lol, stored the calling with a C at the end and T for text i.e... Calling +44xxxxxxxxxx***0061xxxxxxxxx (*=pause)

I saved a fortune, depending on call length I would change sim for long calls as Vodafone AU had a hour to UK for $2 AUD

Given Tesco IC seems to be AU backhauled I would be almost certain Channel Island mobiles are 1p a minute
winchman
1 May 17 #139
Pretty sure Channel island and isle of Man mobile will be 1p as they look just like normal uk mobile numbers. Up to now been a complete rip off to them.
seaniboy
1 May 17 #140
Can't find my anywheresim.com 'number' to try, it is only used for 999 emergency access so never topped up - it's a Manx Telecom number, someone will report back

Strange thing is when you try to make a call the number shows as 2 extra digits when they message you saying credit £0.00 - it's exactly like o2's *#10# system - but it is a +44 7452 XXX XXX XX number on both sims ??
cru
1 May 17 #141
but you use your internet mb when ringing then?
patcho
1 May 17 #142
yes, but it's minimal, the same as using this app.
having tried this Tesco app and fp I think this has the edge on voice quality.
seaniboy
1 May 17 #143
Wifi is a friend indeed
patcho
1 May 17 #144

cru
1 May 17 #145
so wouldnt it be more easier just to use FP as data + voice? they both run on the same signal
seaniboy
1 May 17 #146
Well if FP starts giving free unlimited landlines & international texts people may consider it, the problems with FP are poor quality voice at times and app the hijacks the phone without force closing it.
twinkle.eyes
1 May 17 #147
How do you receive texts on a tablet which doesn't have a sim in it if you just register for an account?
seaniboy
1 May 17 #148
You can't, you need a sim with the mobile number registered to TIC in the tablet to receive.
rok263
2 May 17 #149
For those having problems with topping up / adding credit via the app, the issue may be android version specific, it will work for some users, but not others, iOS users should all be okay. If you contact Tesco IC support via twitter they will deny / any knowledge of any payment / top us issue. But if you ring them on 0345 025 5550 they will then confirm there is a known issue and you need to top up via the phone automated service, minimum £5 top, or in store at any till, minimum £3 top up. Tesco IT are working on a fix, with no known "fix date" as yet.
cru
2 May 17 #150
I meant FP for data instead of the three 200mb sim
seaniboy
2 May 17 #151
It's 6 and half a dozen, FP runs via a third party MVNO & server - Foggmobile, 3 on the other hand has UK servers and it is direct. That may effect call quality on top of cheaper FP servers - but one of each for in a phone/tablet = 400MB a month, if you have a dual sim or dual sim mobile it might work with some sim switching about and logins ?

Personally I would chose 3 if I wasn't using Plusnet Mobile.
seaniboy
2 May 17 #152
I think Tesco IC twitter may well be run by a outsourced body, just as the care team just as TIC is. Arm, butt and elbow come to mind!

Rather Tesco it, not giving anyone card details over the phone, internet is easier to claim back from card issuer but proving you never have a human card details is impossible when transactions start popping up, online only is the secure way to be, unexpected incoming calls asking for security? - "I'll call you back on the public published number".

Were you talking to Brits or offshore on customer services ? Thanks
rok263
2 May 17 #153
I was talking to a Brit.

hukdlr
3 May 17 #155
You dialed an 09 number with this app and it went through fine with no extra charges?
seaniboy
3 May 17 #156
Most probable I used them from AU with Vodafone AU & Three AU (before the merger) it charged by +44 prefix - a U.K. 0800 number may be charged at the mobile or landline rate - telco dependant, Optus AU was the only free UK 0800 via a calling card using Optus Mobile, flagfall connection rate only on mobile & calling card, think all in between both was circa 25p for a hour to UK 0800 numbers.

AU still has the hangover of its 1986 Brexit with the UK and BT having a major international hub there, quite feesible a 09 number is charged cheaper, Channel Islands landlines and mobiles are free/1p.

Problem is if people start abusing premium rate 09 call all rates will go up until they realise why it's making a loss - 09 numbers, even if they correct it it will be a long time before rates come back down, it's a business not a co-op.
hukdlr
3 May 17 #157
Too complicated/technical for me to understand :-)

Is it free for a call 09 number or not via the app?

Also, you seem to know a lot about Australia Telcos. Do you know if any network over there allows unlimited calls to UK mobiles, apart from Optus and Telstra?

They have no signal, nor landline - I did suggest a signal box/picocell but they were not willing to pay EE £90 or even Vodafone £60.

5 May 17 #165
In comming calls is a bit tricky though. The app and wifi would do everything a computer would do. You can try DIDlogic for incoming numbers too..
Greenwichero
7 May 17 #166
They could install the app in a tablet or smartphone and you could provide them the confirmation code by registering a secondary PAYG SIM/UK number. Don't know if this could help you.
seaniboy
7 May 17 #167
I think they would like that ever better lol old age, just chilling - outgoing calls only lol.

I would guess that is ideal and a Three PAYG with Wifi Calling app for emergency use indoors at home or out and about, 3 is the best signal around them out and about at home, apparently that's because 3 threw up new base station equipment on old T-Mobile sites and then some local Orange ones pulled in via EE later , but the latters base stations hardware is falling to bits as so old so not a option as outdoor coverage.

DIDlogic, thanks for that, may come in handy in the future, knowledge is power as they say (_;)

Bit of advice about the Tesco Calling app: Calls break up with a weird droning noise then resume. So calling phones on it us not for any serious matters. This was my experience from completely different but extremely fast wifis. iPhone 5s.

Well, the Tesco app's landline calls and £1 credit are a free deal so try it, your mileage may vary.
seaniboy
11 May 17 #169
Never had a issue myself, even with a crap Sky 1MB upload speed. Unlike Orange/EE Broadband where people used to complain of severe echo and drops (and the upload speed would yoyo like hell).

If the service is based in AU and the servers possibly too the ISP may not prioritise such data ?

Maybe activate QOS ? No idea what port TIC would use though.
paulandpam1
17 May 17 #170
Is there any benefit of this over Viber because it doesn't seem free to me?
I have just downloaded it and when I make a uk landline call it uses my normal network EE to make a 03 number call that I get charged for with at normal rates.
EDIT .. Sorry just found the setting in the app 'allow calls on mobile data & prefer wi-fi or mobile data' that needed ticking.

17 May 17 #171
There is an additional 4p connection charge on all calls.

Only calls made through gsm (your actual phone dialer) if you make calls through the internet they are free.

have been using it fee time back as Tesco was my previews provider and wasn't happy with it, poor quality often cutting the connection echo ect.

26 May 17 #174
Anyone found that tone dialling on the Tesco app barely works? So it's not possible to use the app for calling anything menu driven where you select your options via dialling numbers. Pity as I'd like to have used it for calling 03 numbers. Had to go back to landline with 18185 for decent quality on long calls to call centres.

To confirm works great and free to Australia for texting, my elderly aunt has a normal phone with no wifi so works great for me

Also note that SMS messages to the USA do not show your mobile number as the originator, even when sending from the Calling App. They instead show (different) USA numbers. Makes the service pointless, as not only does the recipient not know who sent the message, they cannot reply to you!

Found that I had to select Travel Mode to get call routed via WiFi, just setting Prefer WiFi didn't do it. Used it today for first time for a while and I guess app must have been updated as it now seems to ignore Travel mode after giving me a message that I'm not in a roaming area.
SingingDwarf to faddy54
15 Aug 17 #179
I'm not quite with you - are you saying that you used to be able to select Travel Mode to get call routed via wifi, but that now it does not work?

I noticed this today, after trying to use wifi for the very first time - select Travel Mode, try to dial, get message that "It appears you are no longer in an area where roaming charges apply. Do you want to turn off travel mode?" Selecting no, it still attempts to dial the local access number.
