Sorry, might not have been clear. I want to sell the drives and keep the NAS. I already have 3TB WD RED's I got from the Tesco deal. Just looking for a NAS to stick them in. Was going to go Microserver + Xepenology, but advantage with this would be official updates (and possibly free if selling the drives will cover the initial outlay).

Looks like the 2nd round orders at £565 will be honoured because Amazon pre authorisation has appeared on my credit card statement.

I wonder with all the discussion on CPU failure if it is worth taking out the 3 year accident and breakdown cover @ £40

I pondered over that too
Synology have extended the warranty on this and the other nas affected by 1 year
But that is only 2 years in total

Sorry can't remember. Didn't seem to understand at first, but eventually managed to explain the price was still the same as previous order they'd cancelled due to "pricing error". Then went away for 10 mins to check and came back assuring me this order wouldn't be cancelled.

I have re-ordered with the 3 year protect, £605 in total. I figured it was worth it given the circumstances and it looks pretty good cover.

Won't the drives come with WD 3 year warranty anyway? If so you're just getting 1 year extra warranty on the NAS for the extra £50.

Mentos
25 Apr 17#37
Well it is EOL. The 916+ (2GB version) is essentially the new version of the 415+ and I believe the 417/917 is due out this year. But I think it's wishful thinking the price is a genuine clear out price due to the 4 x 6TB WD Red drives. They certainly aren't EOL and currently retail at over £200 each.

£40 not £50 and it can be cancelled If it breaks they will replace or give Amazon vouchers. Not sure if the 3 year warranty applies to drives bought like this - don't know either way I figured £40 was reasonable

Anyone noticed the description for 'This Item' under 'Compare to Similar Items':
Data Transfer Rate —\x09 Hard Disk Size —
The other ones (with drives) all show data transfer rates and hard disk size. This one doesn't. Are Amazon going to get out of this by shipping just the NAS I wonder?

I looked at the weight of things before putting my order, the listing says it's 6KG A standalone Synology DS415 on Amazon says it weighs 2.5KG. (so there's some extra weight in it) The HDDs weigh 753 grams. So 2.5KG plus 4xHDD @ 753grams

Guess it makes sense to stick with Synology then.
I've decided to grab a HP Gen 8 and run Xpenology and either pfsense/openvpn appliance on VM's. Figure I can swap out the processor for one with AES-NI and get good throughput for openvpn remote access. Plus have the option of using the 5th bay for expansion.
