Really recommend at this price, along with the Steam Controller this has completely changed how I play PC games.
Expecting the usual flurry of "waste of money, lag, doesn't work" etc comments. Problem is that there's no guarantee how well the Steam Link will run with your setup. It can be a little glitchy at times and may not necessarily run flawlessly out the box. I had to do a lot of tweaking to get it running how I want it to - it's perfect now I've fixed it, but admittedly it was incredibly frustrating at first.
It's well worth a punt at £16 though. Heat

Have you tried home plugs? My router and steam link are both in the front room but my gaming pc is in the office on the other side of the house. Works perfectly without lag as long as your home doesn't have ancient electrical wiring.
I got one of these at Christmas when a similar deal was on. As a bit of a current gen PC noob, I found it a bit of a faff to get rid of the lag, pair various controllers and get the emulators running as I wanted. However, with a bit of patience and an hour or so of properly concentrating and reading guides online, I got it working.
Well worth persevering, but apart from the initial setup, it's not going to hold your hand, so just be aware of that.

Make sure you have a robust network if you buy this, 802.11ac minimum I would recommend and ideally hard wire one side or even both to reduce latency. I bought one but ended up building a PC for the living room TV to game on.. a bit overkill but I wasn't fussed with upgrading my network.
got mine today with the steam controller its great for the money. the controller takes a bit of time to get used to but i played 2 hours of portal 2 and i'm getting better. But even with 100 hours i cant see it been better than a mouse and keyboard for some games, but for playing on the sofa you cant beat it

It does not only run Steam games. You can simply switch to desktop mode and run anything you like. You can also add non steam games/apps to the menu to save you having to switch to desktop mode. You simply need the steam client to make the initial connection. That's also how people get all the emulators to run.

I got one of these over Christmas but unfortunately the lag is just unbearable when I use it, most probably because my desktop is on Wi-Fi. The SteamLink is connected to Cat6 but I don't think it helps all that much. Some non-Steam desktop applications (e.g. Cemu and media players) refuse to work with a controller connected to the SteamLink as well.

+1 recommendation for powerline adapters. They are a godsend. Steam Link or not, your desktop will thank you. The only better method would be a long ethernet cable and a hole in the wall/floor.
Well technically you don't need the internet, just a local network, and I'm assuming you said HDMI because you're talking about connecting the laptop to a TV, but otherwise, yes, it's basically the same thing because the Steam Link is simply a mini PC (low spec, low power, Linux based) that runs the Steam client so you can stream games to it the way you would to any other PC - it's just that, at £16, it's much cheaper than a spare laptop so you can justify having it permanently setup with your TV so you don't have the hassle of connecting laptop, controllers, etc. every time you want to play.

This might work if you're looking for a wireless controller for gaming with no mouse and keyboard compatibility:
Picked up an Nvidia shield when the new model came out, didn't realise that the ability to play Steam games through it also requires that Steam is installed on a PC running the Nvidia Experience software - so I couldn't connect to Steam on my laptop :disappointed:
So thanks OP, have picked one of these up from Grafton Cambridge Game - they have quite a few in stock if anyone else is in the area! Should allow me to get my Rocksmith running through the big screen!
I've recently set up a headless gaming server on ESXI with a low power 1050 GTX, and I've got a Xbox One S Wireless controller which I've read is compatible with this, so this will be a great cheap client machine for this price.
Might consider the Nvidia Shield at some point which offers Geforce NOW, GameStream and also Steam (yes, there's some overlap there), but it's priced way too high at the moment. For the meantime, this is the best bang for one's buck if you want to do game streaming.
For Steam games, I always keep an eye out for Humble Bundle packages, CDKeys and Steam sales to get good deals, but as others have said, you can do plenty of other things with emulators and the like.

After lacklustre performance over Wifi, once I'd got the house fitted up with AC1200 homeplug thingies the thing sputters into life. It really lives or dies based on your network and you're not going to get anywhere on a ten year old router/modem combo.
Desktop upstairs, steam link plugged into my TV downstairs, can either natively work with PS4 pad or from a tray on my lap with wireless mouse and keyboard (2.4GHz variety).
I wouldn't use it for competitive online play as there is a minimum of around 20ms lag no matter what, but I recently played through Dying Light, GRID 2, even a PS2 emulator with Katamari Damacy and had no issues. Stick it in "beautiful" mode and it'll double the bandwidth but have a lot less colour banding etc.
WARNING WARNING: Does not work with XBox One wireless dongle unless you buy a pricey and buggy software extra. You will instead have to plug that controller in wired.

All games work perfectly with the controller as long as it hooks the steam overlay. I have my steam controller connected to the steamlink and play all my games from the sofa on my TV. I started off with normal side scrollers like Limbo, Max and Inside to get use to the controller.
After getting the hang of it I tried Quantum Break which played really well using the right touchpad for rough movement and the gyro for finer "headshot" aiming.
Resident Evil 7 played equally well and was actually my first fps I played with a controller. I am currently playing The Witcher 3 and it's such a great experience on both the steam link and the steam controller.

It's great. Although I think that's helped by the inbuilt compression of my GTX 1060, but any recent graphics card should do you well. Try it out on a laptop or something else first. Steam in home streaming is easy to setup, and works far better than Nvidia in home streaming in my experience.
