For those not in the know Scottish tablet is a sweeter, harder and more deliciously indulgent version of fudge. I've never spotted Scottish tablet for sale south of Berwick before (I usually have to rely on my dad bringing supplies when he visits, but of course it's gone in a couple of weeks). Today I spotted (and bought) some in the Aldi in Whitley Bay. OK it's still north of Hadrian's Wall so still technically in Scotland but it shows that confectionary royalty is coming to England. Hourah. I think it was £2.99 but to be honest I didn't look too closely. When you really need your fix you'll pay anything.
I haven't looked at the pack yet but, be warned, there may be a few calories in this. What the heck. If you get fat just blame the Government. Enjoy.

Oops. In my naïve excitement I may have opened a can of worms here. The prospect of being able to buy tablet less than a mile from my house, thus not having to ban my 89 year old father from visiting unless he was bent double with a rucksack full of stuff, had put me in such a state of elation that I just wanted to share the joyous new with others (and who could blame me as the only other exciting to have happened to me was being able to report the sale due to the closure of the Newcastle branch of Clas Ohlson!).
In my haste I have committed many sins. I suggested a price of £2.99, and thankfully others have stated the correct price of closer to a pound, thus bringing said tablet into the price range of young children. I may have led to the premature deaths of a multitude of Lake District walkers by encouraging them to switch from the relatively low calorie Kendal Mint Cake. I could have contributed to a wave of extreme obesity and sugar addiction across the rest of the country and I may have accidentally spilled the beans to one gent the reason behind so many people pretend to be Scottish andtalk over him. All I can do is apologise and offer the following : At least I've stopped people talking about Brexit for a while and thank goodness I didn't say anything about the excellent deals available on macaroon bars with a free bottle of Fergusade.

Sounds similar to Kendal Mint Cake which is also meant to be an energy boosting snack, used by hikers, climbers and people with a sweet tooth. It's also packed with glucose and brown sugar making it a great accompaniment on hikes apparently. An 85g bar can also be purchase at some outdoor outlets for around £1. My dad also use to buy this whenever we used to go hiking though I think he actually bought it as more of an indulgence than anything else to be honest. There are also two versions of this too, it comes in both white and brown. Both are equally good and very sweet too. Kendal Mint Cake isn't buttery though. Scottish Cake is 400 calories per 100g, Kendal Mint Cake is a little less at 379.
Incidentally, the Scottish Tablet in Aldi's is £1.19 according to their website. No, and it's not a special buy though at a guess these look like they may be overstock from Burns night though that was end of January.
Tablet is wonderful. Reminds me of childhood days when I could eat this and not put on three stones a block.

If it's deep fried **** you're after maybe you need to try the dark web, although as far as tablet goes the Lees stuff may well fall into the same category. Horrible soft stuff which doesn't deserve to be called tablet. My dad brought it on one of his visits and I made him stay the whole weekend in the coal cellar as a fitting punishment, The Lees macaroon bars and other products are, however, perfectly acceptable (that should hopefully avoid a law suit).

For all you tablet lovers - You will need one tray I use a roasting tin lined with tin foil lightly greased with melted butter or veg oil.
Half a block of butter (do not use spreadable it will not set)
2lbs of sugar (I use three quarters of this)
Half a cup of water.
Half a cup of milk.
1 tin of condensed milk.
Put all ingredients into a deep heavy based pot. Bring to the boil, turn down the heat keeping it at a rolling temperature. Stir frequently the high sugar content makes it prone to burning.
I go by colour and consistency from here. It will start to turn a lovely golden colour. Add stirring all the time your condensed milk. Bring back to the boil and again turn down the heat stirring frequently. KEEP AN EYE ON IT. It will deepen in colour and start to crystallise test this by running a knife around the inside of the pot. I beat the tablet mixture whilst on the heat occasionally. Once the setting point has been reached take off the heat and beat vigorously for 2mins.
Pour into your tin, allow to start setting, score with a sharp knife to portion before it has fully set. Once fully set simply put your hand under the foil and it will break into pieces that you have portioned.
Enjoy

not if you want to make good stuff - then youd be adding butter and milk with vanilla/salt optional
'mrs tilly' seems to stock some bars in supermarkets - pretty sure it was decent if a little hard
never had a decent supermarket one though
lidl sells 2 kinds - cheap stuff is terrible - just a block of slightly bittered sugar
the more expensive stuff is much better but not a patch on home made or mrs tillys
looking at the deal though it doesnt deserve any heat as seems to be wrong price and no weight given!

This is the tablet tourist purchase, real pure Tablet is sold loose and is to be eaten with in four days as it is pure sugar
It also melts in your mouth and is not meant to be hard
here is the recipe
Tablet recipe Ingredients
Makes: 35 squares
850 or 900g (2 lb) caster sugar 125g Unsalted butter
1 tin / 400grams condensed sweetened milk 150ml milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
In a large deep pot place all ingredients except vanilla over medium heat until all melts, stirring frequently. Simmer for 40 minutes stirring now and again.
2.Bring to boil, add vanilla, remove from the heat stirring all the time; be careful.
3.Electric whisk for 5 minutes; mixture will thicken.
4.Spread mixture in a flat tray leave to cool for at least 1 hour. Cut into squares and enjoy
Have to say this recipe makes at approx 100 squares (about 1") so you need a large tin. I used one of our turkey tins with inside measurements 36cm x28cm
half an hour plus quick boil at end and took it off just as it changed colour and thta was perfect. It turned out really well
never fails as name says. Only thing i changed was i put 1 teaspoon of vanilla in as i like that after taste. i will say in case anyone else wondered the same as me the temperature i used was 120 oC in a steel pot and obviously i used unsalted butter. This is proper Scottish tablet that melts in the mouth with no gristle.
the soft centre can happen if mix is not heated to correct temp(too low temp) or it can be the condensed milk that can cause it too as i found with cheaper brands
..nestle condensed milk works best for me and i use 100mls of milk just to wet the sugar and when it starts to simmer make sure temp does not go above 116oC and simmer for about 15mins only until light golden colour then turn up heat slightly for last 5 mins to finish reducing the milk stirring constantly so not to burn the suger..118oc will give soft melt in mouth best kept in fridge
and 120oc is just a bit harder which is better for norm room storage temps i also like to air them overnight to let air dry out any moisture (i use tinfoil cupcakes sleeves so they get moisture)
40 mins is a guide also use your eye for light golden colour this means milk is reducing and to get the boil part right and be able to replicate your desired texture every time u need a thermometer as it can get slightly harder to heat as it reduces so you need turn heat up slow for about 5 mins i average. condensed milk 400g
I found that it didn't need as long a cooking time as the recipe states. the first time i tried it i did it for that long and the sugar caught. The next time i didn't do it for as long, maybe half an hour and took it off just as it changed colour and that was perfect. It turned out really well

You remind me of someone I knew who used to walk through a shop pointing out all the things they didn't want to buy, and why. It takes ages to do your shopping but then you seem like someone who has a fair bit of time on your hands. Goodness I realise that the above is invalid as it neither gives the name of the shop not the inside trouser leg measurements of the person mentioned and some people have difficulty reading between the lines.

thank you for your nonsensical burble

ims2912
2 May 17#94
You're welcome!
I can't do much about being an (ab)normal human being, but thanks for pointing it out anyway. As for the nonsensical bit I've double checked all the words in my burbles so far and they appear to be proper ones, SO ...... my guess is that it's the construction you're having a problem with. As I've suggested before, asking an adult about sentences would be a good first step for you.
Of course, maybe you actually ARE on a higher plane to the rest of us. While we're quite happy to get through our mundane lives occasionally getting mildly excited about something that we might be interested in buying in a shop, your pleasure seems to derive from the ability to get genuinely angry about a wee bit of confectionary. Perhaps you are indeed a 'Special One'. However, by even lowering yourself to engage with a nonsensical burble-merchant like me you are in turn condoning, promoting and promulgating the false purveying of sweet comestibles. Which is the very thing you clearly despise. I'd keep away from Sigmund Freud if I were you, he'd have a field day.
Oh no, when you said 'thank you' you were being sarcastic weren't you. Foiled again. Drat. I feel a right dope now.

I'll check the Chester le street Aldi tomorrow
Heat added
Joking BTW, love this stuff!
Fnarr fnarr. :smirk:
don't think I have ever bought a bar of tablet that I would say was any good.
(Half-Scottish before the usual suspects start moaning about casual racism/xenophobia).
Where exactly in the shop am I looking? One of the middle front aisles I guess?
Enjoy
'mrs tilly' seems to stock some bars in supermarkets - pretty sure it was decent if a little hard
never had a decent supermarket one though
lidl sells 2 kinds - cheap stuff is terrible - just a block of slightly bittered sugar
the more expensive stuff is much better but not a patch on home made or mrs tillys
looking at the deal though it doesnt deserve any heat as seems to be wrong price and no weight given!
It turned out really well
or honey, or corn syrup
numpties abound

Edit: just seen A1UK's beat me to the bad pun. I should read the comments more thoroughly...
Im half English and find that in very bad taste, im also part Polish but that doesn't mean I can make stereotypes about them without being called racist.
Its a stereotype, a lot of the deep fried myths are from English tourists who fail to realise that 99% of Scots dont eat deep fried things anymore than the English do.
Are you for real lol!! What are you comparing to? If you feel that strongly google it or take yourself to Aldis and try it!
i like chocolate as well, how about a deal for 'chocolate instore now in shops' ? about as helpful!
We've left a couple of them on the shelf for someone else...
Jeeezzz!!!@
the fact that the unconfirmed details are within the comments doesn't take away from the fact that the deal is not correctly posted and is basically meaningless
reading is real easy but if you need help then let me know
none of them are the proper place though for anyone voting on the deal
imagine expecting a deal to have a price and pack size! the cheek!
glad you prioritised that rather that sorting out your travesty of a deal like a normal human being
I can't do much about being an (ab)normal human being, but thanks for pointing it out anyway.
Drat. I feel a right dope now.
deal still the wrong price with no weight listed - this this obviously difficult for you
my apologies for having such unreasonable expectations
this is not posted properly so its not a deal

yes it has a lot of heat - basically cos of stupid fanboy types
sure tablet is great but this isn't a great deal for it cos it doesn't say how much you get or for how much so cannot be voted on
a person doesnt have to like a product to post on it, or to vote on it
a deal isn't how much you like or dislike something - its how good the deal is
its simple, yet too much for many here obviously
I'm risking a knock on the door from the police for not following your guidelines but are there any rules about encouraging other posters to respond just so you can have a little chuckle at them?
Please, please DON'T respond. : - )
Hot
You need to have a look at a map and you'll see a good chunk of Scotland is actually "South of Berwick" :stuck_out_tongue:
