What can all this actually do? Is it just about controlling lights / switches? And is it any good?

It's for controlling smart devices.
it will control it own range of SmartThings devices plus other cheaper z wave devices

depends what you are looking for. For myself it is to setup a security system. As soon as soon as someone enters the house it will alert me. Other options for you are
* Link with Google home/Amazon Echo to control your home by voice
* set timers on appliances like washing machines
* Automate lighting based on weather, daylightand when someone is in the house
* Home security camera
* Music system for home
This is a great offer. The community is very helpful.
So many different systems can all talk together e.g. Philips Hue lights and sensors, Sonos speakers, smart TVs, Nest thermostats, Netatmo weather station devices, garage door electric openers, etc. Add into the mix the Amazon Alexa enable devices and you can then start talking to your house and have it respond to you.
My favourite automations are ones such as when going to bed - my house shuts off all lights, TVs, sets the thermostat to night temperatures and starts the bedroom Sonos for some quiet music for an hour all by just walking to the bedroom

I'm interested to know exactly what technology and software you've used to achieve this

The Philips Hue motion sensors are pretty much some of the cheapest and work well for this.
If you have Sonos speakers already at home that could be used as a siren
do you need the hue hub also to be able to use their products

Yes, having Hue Hub will make life much easier. (although SmartThings can control ZigBee devices, Hue Hub will do it ways easier)

Just bought it, thanks. Been looking for it for some time. Need to buy some other gadgets that can work with smartthings now.

Yeah same here picked it up last night.
Very impressed so far
Xiaomi do door sensors really cheap about £9 and work well as I was talking to a guy yesterday who uses them and they also do motion sensors and push buttons

Home Automation is expensive anyway but its getting cheaper slowly!
Anyone have any advice for using an outdoor siren with this as a security alarm?

I would also welcome thoughts on using this as an house alarm.

Looks like good starter kit, but adding the other bits to make it 'yours, will be expensive.

Think it should have said Easter Friday

Nope, Easter is now considered non-PC. Easter eggs will now have to be Holiday Eggs or something. Black is still OK until some snowflake or other deems it 'racist' ...

Can you connect Xiaomi sensors to the Samusung Smartthings hub?
We have some Hue bulbs, are you able to adjust the colours etc as easily with this as you can with the Philips Hub?

Does anyone know if this will control my existing z-wave switches and sensors? I am using a Raspberry Pi at the moment but would prefer a dedicated hub.

Use a Belkin Wemo low voltage switch to control a standard external siren. Bit of simple wiring needed and a 12v power supply

What do you do if you just go into your room but not actually go to bed for good?

I don't mean to criticize, just a bit surprised how expensive IoT stuff in this country. Especially Wemo, Hive, Philips Hue etc which are massively over-priced.
The Aqara set (by Xiaomi) is also based on Zigbee, contains Hub, Door sensor, DB/RH sensor, Power socket, Wireless Push Button Switch, PIR only cost about GBP30. Each accessory costs about GBP5~6.
FYI - Devices with Zigbee protocols are not normally compatible thus it is not suggested to expect them all connected to the Hub (e.g. Hive Zigbee Bulb). However via homebridge this can be easily done.

You seem to know your stuff. I've ordered this kit, what would you recommend instead? Where did you get the £30 kit and £5-6 sensors?
From what I've searched, I can't see any Xiaomi Aqara set that contains all the stuff that Novezeil listed.....only a few items indivually.....and a significantly more than £5-6

I'd be interested also as i can't see them for that price.
in fact I've just ordered 3 xiaomi door/window sensors from ali express for roughly £24 delivered to work with my SmartThings.
I finally got my sonoff Wi-Fi switches working with SmartThings yesterday also

This is the Aqara set I referred to. It is slightly cheaper than buying separately. For normal IoT home scenario I would recommend Xiaomi, not only it's cheap but also the app user experience (e.g. Like British Gas/Hive their app even not optimized for iPhone Plus series yet) plus wide range of accessories. Problem with overpriced IoT system is not with the initial cost, but with when you expanding the system with more accessories (e.g. Wemo Insight Switch cost about 35 quid each, I would sincerely consider this as rip-off).
Only issues with Xiaomi in UK I found are: 1> Require multiple power socket adapter to US/CN standard then convert them back to UK; 2> Bayonet socket vs E27 of Yeelight, but I think Yeelight is going to release 2nd gen soon so not sure Bayonet will be one of them.

Can you provide a link of where to buy these sets though please, as can't seem to find anything despite trying, only individual items at around £20 and less on aliexpress
