I've not been impressed with these. I'm a head of D&T at a secondary school, bought 2 for the department. Found them to be poor. Worst thing is the chuck which slips far too easily. In the department we have 2 of these, a budget £99 makita and an Aldi Drill. Even the Aldi drill is far better than the Ryobi. Whem I look for a drill to pick up at school, I go Makita, then Aldi, then Ryobi. It annoys me when I have to use a Ryobi one. Would not buy again in a million years.

I think the modular nature of the Ryobi would be a better investment. You'd be able to add another of their tools and buy just the bare unit without a the batteries The Bosch one you are looking at is not one of the rugged professional range, whereas the Ryobi can compete on a semi-serious level, albeit the batteries aren't great.
I'd personally choose the Ryobi and build on it if / when I could.

At this price the Ryobi is a better drill.
If you are willing to increase your budget by £30 then go for the Bosch drill AzeemB mentions from Screwfix. Maybe overkill for DIY, but a good bit of kit used by the trade.

I, too have a collection of Ryobi One+ tools and rate them well for 'extreme DIY' use. I know professionals who use them with good results too.
This is a very good deal though you do need to bear in mind that it includes the basic 1.3Ah batteries. Fine for drills and similar lighter draw tools but you'll soon become very frustrated with them if you use them on a circular saw or other more demanding tool. They do One+ lawnmowers now - I don't think you'd get far with a 1.3Ah battery!
Definitely hot at this price provided you know what you're getting.

Thanks for that. To be honest I think the professional Bosch would be a bit overkill for me putting up a few shelves and general DIY. I've had an offer of £66 for the Bosch I linked to on Flubit. Would you still recommend the Ryobi at £3 more?

2 Apr 172#13
It all depends if you plan to buy more 'bosch' tools or more 'ryobi' ones like the impact driver. While the drill is on special offer check the prices of other tools in the range you might want and decide if they are reasonable.
The 1.3Ah batteries with this deal are cheap and nasty, and I don't think they will last as long as the 1.5Ah batteries. It seems to be a battery mostly bundled with drills to keep the price down.

At this price (even better if Quidco tracks) it's more or less price of the batteries alone.

I've had this drill for about 2 years now. I find the torque good enough to never need a cord impact drill or anything like that, but I'm an occasional user.
Things like power tools in private hands are used less that 1% of the time, so save as much as you can, and one+ you can share the batteries, but I agree 1.4ah is a bit small. On the bright side it's lighter than the 4ah battery.
I usually use the 4ah and we use the two 1.4ah from the deal for portable vacuum cleaner and portable pump.

I've had loads of drills, and other corded and cordless power tools, from all the big names, buying the ones i needed at the time, which where at the best price. I've got work zone and parkside tools.
I'm currently in the process of changing over to one plus. There are better tools out there, but not at these prices, and the battery compatibly is worth the slightly/possibly worse performance. For serious DIYers it's not even worth nothing with, get the Ryobi's

Hi Tom, can you confirm that the Aldi drill is ok for the occasional use> My Ebauer batteries have died after 8 years of on and off use (i am not a professional DIYer). Any feedback would be great, thank you

Don't know the specific drill you're looking at but anything with Ni-Cd batteries is to be avoided (needs to be Li-ion) and needs to be 18v for any serious work. Also consider the availability of extra/replacement batteries.

I have a couple of different Aldi drills as well as Worx ones. The Worx 20v one is fantastic but the Aldi 18v one i have to say for what it costs is brilliant. Not only that but the 3 year warranty just makes the Aldi one my personal best choice as i can always take it back or get a replacement for a good while into its life.

This is 12v - I have heard the Milwaukee ones are as good as Makita, but.....12v - 18v for Ryobi one ?????
_g_
3 Apr 17#57
Milwaukee and Roybi are owned by the same parent company - Ryobi is aimed slightly further down the market, but then Makita has their consumer and pro ranges.
As it goes, I've got a drill from the Milwaukee 12v Range and Ryobi 18v.
The Ryobi will definitely handle bigger jobs better. But, if you don't need to do large diameter drilling or aren't doing lots in metal, the Milwaukee will do fine too and is more compact in the hand etc.
But I'm pretty sure that code in the deal no longer works.
My Ryobi is now over 10 years old I think - I kept looking for an excuse to update it to a brushless one, but so far I've failed to find said excuse (the gear selection did stop working, but alas that was just the selector and fixed with a dab of superglue.) It's seen quite a lot of (ab)use in those years too.
A while ago I did get some 1.4ah lithium batteries I think they were and they were fine for drilling, but their protection cut in really early with an angle driver.
Quite likely they won't limit torque however - lithium tend to have much higher discharge ( C ) rates than NI-CD.

It's not how often you use it - it's what you use it for. If it's not up to the job it's no use to you. This is likely to be OK for very light duties but you'll struggle to make a hole in a lintel for curtains or similar.

Is this a better deal than using the discount code on the Bosch (http://www.diy.com/departments/bosch-cordless-18v-2ah-li-ion-combi-drill-2-batteries-psb1800li-2/1131623_BQ.prd)? The difference in price is £3 only and the Bosch has 2 x 2A batteries instead of the 1.3A on this. I know that the Bosch has been cheaper (whe the code stacking worked before Christmas) but even the non reduced price seems to be comparable especially with the better batteries.

3 Apr 17#80
I have one of these owned for nearly 6 years now. I bought this as I used one for work for about 9 months or so and liked the idea of being able to swap the battery from tool to tool. Soon after I bought the combi drill I bought the cheap driver. I already had a spare battery from 2009 and it still goes well. I bought the 4.0Ah battery at christmas which lasts and lasts. My only criticism of the current offer is Ryobi no longer ship these with the quick charger. Doesn't matter if you have more than one battery but mine did come with the 30 minute or so quick charger but it was a bit more.
I have used the 1.3Ah batteries driving in No. 12 x 3.5" screws and they will last best part of a day. The deal posted offers good value with the code and it's just about worth it for the batteries alone. Heat added.

I have an old dewalt with the chunkier NiCd batteries..either the batteries are near dead or there's something wrong with the gears/chuck/motor, such that I don't get a lot of torque now. I'm looking to replace it with something decent. Will this Ryobi be a step down? I'm a keen DIYer so usage will be mixed, but by no means professional every day use.
Edit: worth mentioning that I prefer spending a little more and buying once if the quality is justified

The Dewalt DCD795 is brushless with the many perceived (and well documented) benefits that brings. Max torque is 60Nm v 50Nm on the Ryobi. The Dewalt has a metal gearbox (Don't see that on the Ryobi website but check). Comes with a 30 minute charger - the Ryobi is 45 minute. The Dewalt has a proper case, not a soft bag. The Dewalt is the better technically. At £90.46 it's a great price for what you get. But I chose it because in 3 years time I won't be thinking about what I paid. Nevertheless, the Ryobi is a stonking deal if it's the right drill for you.

Could be useful for bigger jobs or if you intend to purchase some of the bigger bits of Ryobi One+ kit in the future.
my account automatically apply club10 discount at 10% at £50 spend! can't seem to change it. Used a different email address, works for home delivery.
I used one and accidently dropped it from 6ft... Kept going strong. Fantastic tough magnesium shielding BETTER than a Bosch (dont know about Aldi's verson) - With case, extra battery and charger. Grab one before they sell out!

I think it should be a Hot Deal itself but I've no time to post it (Happy for someone to do this). Only a single 1.5ah battery but with a charge time of just 30 minutes the casual DIYer can have a tea break while it charges. Brushless motor, exceptionally light, metal chuck, metal gearbox, great reviews, etc, etc. HTH
it's not quite as good as the Mikita gear but it's almost half the price
Cracking deal
i have 4 drills already :-)
I picked this up on offer, with a second battery discounted and after the usual voucher you get for money off when you have a B+Q clubcard it only cost me around £75 at the time.
£100 (or £95 as someone else paid) it's a good price, but I personally wouldn't want to just have the one battery. But you can always pick up a second off ebay for around £30, when funds allow.
I have used the 1.3Ah batteries driving in No. 12 x 3.5" screws and they will last best part of a day. The deal posted offers good value with the code and it's just about worth it for the batteries alone. Heat added.
Extra XR battery is £28.99 delivered by Amazon FBA. HTH
Edit: worth mentioning that I prefer spending a little more and buying once if the quality is justified
Looks like a profesional version from Bosch with 3 batteries "Bosch Cordless 18V 1.5Ah Li-Ion Combi Drill 3 Batteries GSB18-2LI

£64 for mine collected...my wife is going to kill me so I'm already trying to figure out an excuse for buying another drill.
Is there such a thing as a Toolaholic?
B&Q's website is showing that the drill is in stock at a relatively local store, until I try and checkout, and then it says it isn't . I called the store and it is in stock and they're holding it for me. However I presume I won't be able to enter a code in store?
On my phone is wouldn't let me add it to the basket, however on a laptop using the desktop website it would. Worth a try.
It's accepted the discount code, and shows £15 off when you spend £75 or more, but it's not deducting it from the total amount. Still wants me to pay £84 at the payment page.
