I have this very Mirror cam. It films most of the road but not the turnings on the right. Adjustment is poor cant understand why they didnt make them to swivel more. Fits older smaller rear view mirrors better than quick wider dim dip mirrors. Also had to place tissue in the ball socket of the mirror to stop it moving especially on speed bumps and sudden braking. The weight of the device causes this. In fact with this type of design I think in an impact it would deflect the camera after the first impact and then not record the after footage in some types of accident. Small lightweight discrete dash cams are probably a better option.

You definitely get what you pay for, to a point, with dashcams, in the best/brightest conditions (much like a normal camera), the pictures may be reasonable, but as light fades, the quality really diminishes with poor lenses and processing power. On a slightly overcast day, poor dashcams are pretty useless at making out number plates and you probably wouldn't even be able to identify the make/model of the car from the poor image you'll get. The cheaper ones are especially prone to overheating in the hot environment of a parked car on a sunny day. For a tenner I can't imagine this is any good at all.

do none of you.have mobile phones download the free app and use that as a dash cam. chances are your camera in your phone is a damn site better than in some cheap dash cam

I got mine today. Is anyone else having difficulty navigating the menus? The buttons don't work as per their label, with the Left button seemingly used to Enter a menu option. Entering the date I can only decrease the numbers.

Voted hot! Quality of the camera aside, I need a replacement for my current mirror since the reflective mirror backing is somehow peeling away at the edges. Hopefully this will solve the problem with minimal effort even if only to use without the dvr functions

Mine was Esure. Churchill themselves seemed like they were wanting to do the right thing but were tied up with protocol. Once they'd agreed "without prejudice" I chased them for my excess and got it back very quickly. Back in 2007 I had a horrendous time with Elephant (part of the Churchill group), who I was insured with at the time after a bus clipped my 2 week old/400 miles on the clock Golf GT TDI - found my car 12 feet from where I left it after collecting a takeaway. They seemed only interested in filling their pockets by giving me a low end Golf and charging the other side almost £500 a week while dragging out the repair as long as possible. Never had an "at fault" claim, yet been given the runaround by my own insurer more often than the other side's.

What a nightmare! When it happened to you...........at the time of the incident did the other driver stump up his/her insurance details and was it an obvious case they were to blame? I can't see how the culprits insurance company just let them get away with it as if nothing has ever happened.

He gave a vague address as to his insurer's details (the name of a broker on a street), his own name and address and a mobile number. As soon as he gave me his address, I realised he was living above a shop. 2 streets away from me. I was waiting at the top of a sliproad, for a gap to get onto the roundabout above a major road, he didn't stop and rear-ended the car. His ancient Citroen Berlingo's front end fell to bits like a clown car, he lost all his coolant there and then, but only a mile and a half from home there was little chance of overheating when he drove it home. Sunday lunchtime, possible drunk driver. Everyone else just drove around us - clearly too busy to stop and be a witness. Took lots of photos of him and both cars from all angles. I had to do a ridiculous amount of chasing to get their insurer (Churchill) to pay out and my insurer was being a royal PITA before "without prejudice" liability was agreed because I didn't want to go with their approved repairer, so I paid nearly triple my excess to my insurer go to a place of my choosing that was VW approved and had an excellent reputation.

Yes. A mate of mine is a senior administrator for Allianz and says this type of behaviour is on the rise. They can't extract the excess from the other party if they haven't responded, and are saddled with a huge burden of proof (good, clear dashcam footage identifying the driver and number plate or more than 1 independent witness) to reduce or remove their no-claims for the future, or even rescind their insurance.

The problem with dashcams is the 30 seconds you spent setting up the cam could be why 20 mins later you was in the wrong place at the right time. If you had not spent that 30 seconds before you set off on your journey you would have been through that junction before that hgv got there and smashed up your rear.

Amazingly flawed logic
paul_merton to POWYSWALES
16 Apr 17 1 #26
Conversely, NOT spending 30 seconds setting up a dashcam could be why you end up in a collision with an HGV rather. If you had spent 30 seconds setting it up, you'd be able to capture all of the action (involving someone else) on your dashcam, not have to faff about with any insurance nonsense, and make a few hundred quid by selling your footage to ITV.

I think the net benefit of having a dashcam is greater than not having one. I'm £500 up because of mine (not from selling footage).

Exactly, you set the dashcam up the first time you fit it and then just leave it to do its thing. Its not as if you have to do anything everytime you get in the car .................or if you do then buy a different one

So if the person responsible doesn't respond to their insurer they get away with it scot free? Or is it still recorded on their insurance they were at fault and then their future premiums increase as they've been involved in an accident?
monkeyhanger75
16 Apr 17 #21
What do you honestly think you are going to get for a tenner? I've tried a few £50 dashcams and in all but the best light conditions, they are useless, a £10 one is going to be beyond crap. Dubious 3rd party sellers aren't going to make it easy for you to claim a replacement under warranty either when it stops working after 3 months.

In my time driving my cars have been rear-ended twice and hit while parked 3 times (front and back). I'd highly recommend a set-up able to monitor while parked and also to capture a collision with your rear - those don't come cheap but will pay for themselves in the long run if you're unlucky and your excess is at risk. Flimsy construction that knocks a dashcam away from it's prime setting just going over a very minor pothole, or a severely limited viewing angle that won't capture much is going to do very little to help you.

Being rear-ended is almost always going to be the fault of another driver, but there's a tactic people are doing now which is a complete pain to sort out, as I found out last time someone hit me:-

You get rear-ended by someone in an old banger and report everything (inc photos) to your insurer. The other party does nothing, your insurer contacts their insurer, the other driver does not respond. This really drags things out as the other insurance company gives the benefit of the doubt to their driver until after 10-12 weeks they give up on getting a response and if you have the photos/witnesses to prove it, the other insurer will eventually settle on a "without prejudice" basis. If you haven't waited until that point to get your car repaired, you've paid excess out to your insurer and will be pestering the life out of them to get your excess back. Meanwhile the man in the banger has patched up his heap with parts from the scrapyard and is driving around as if nothing has happened, having not lost any no claims or excess. The scumbag who did this to me lives 2 streets from me.

Buy once, and buy a good one that is expected to do the job properly and last 5 years.

Seems ok for the price, better than nothing.

Does this just clip over your existing mirror though? Because if it doesn't it would be a total pain as most cars nowadays have auto-dim mirrors, sensors for the wipers/alarm system etc wired in.

Already got a dash cam but it cost 5 times this, the video quality is spot on though

or you could set it up and then go indoors and have a cuppa.

Seriously, fitting a cam is the best thing you can fit in your vehicle, whether its £10 or £100. Cameras are the worst enemy of chancers, fraudsters and liars

Have one of the DOD cameras. With WDR its great for night driving. Bought it 4 years ago and the only thing it failed was the battery. Bought one off ebay for £2.50 and replace it.
The problem is people realize they need a dash cam after incident.

You can get a dual channel set up (front and rear cameras, or one unit with a front and back facing camera - like many smart phones and tablets). I have the Thinkware F770 in mine - it isn't cheap but has very good quality Sony EXMOR hardware front and back cameras and will monitor the car while parked up in case anyone clips you in the car park etc.
