Had my eye on this for a while and was waiting for a code I could use towards it. Very decent spec for the money and IMO a better option than the Dells due to the better screen. Only downside for me is lack of upgradability, alsonot sure how loud/hot it will get as seems to be quite slim considering how much they've squeezed in.

There will always be something new in a few months time, but there aren't any significant breakthroughs due, at least not that anyone knows about.

The 1050ti is a good step up in performance from the old 950/960 that was used in lower end gaming orientated machines, and exceeds the 970m that was used in higher end machines, whilst using less power.

This is a nicely balanced machine, in my opinion, and a decent price based in the spec and extra controller.

This HP for £479 at John Lewis would perhaps be a better buy. Most of the additional cost is due to the graphics card performance.

I've been monitoring here and elsewhere for a laptop of about this spec. Am I right in thinking that the latest gen of Nvidia mobile GPU's are a pretty big leap in performance since last gen? What about Intel's 7th gen processors? Is now a good time to buy something like this? Or would I want to wait for any new tech in the pipeline? If it's only small upgrades on the way, I'd be inclined to buy now.

Also, would I be better off going for a 1060 for the graphics? Would that future proof me a bit more?
tawse57 to Shadow_of_Intent
8 Apr 17 1 #16
I watched a review on Mobile Tech Review last week which was comparing the latest laptops - think it was a high-end HP versus the 15 inch Dell XPS. In passing they suggested that there are several types of 1050 cards in top end laptops currently but that some of them are pretty "blah" as they are just basic versions.

There was also a post on here a few weeks back where someone pointed out that now is the wrong time to buy a ne whigh-end laptop as there is a lot of new tech coming out in the Summer. I got the impression that waiting a few months made sense if paying a load of money for a high-end laptop.

The Mobile Tech Review also pointed out that the high-end Dells do not currently come with the latest HDMI standard which is incapable of powering 4K external monitors.

Hope this helps.

I'm the same. Plus these Omens have notoriously bad displays. If you're buying a new laptop in 2017 it really should be a little future proof with USB C.

Edit- They're also getting posted every few days and the only laptops to gain heat. It's a bit fishy to me but I'm sure everything is above board.

"I'm the same. "Plus these Omens have notoriously bad displays."

The latest iterations have very decent IPS displays (don't know about previous version). Good viewing angles nice bright, sharp colours - could be brighter, yes - (you need brightness turned to between 70% - 100% for it to look this good admittedly) but they certainly do not have "bad" displays - I know because I have one :-)
iBird90 to mk12345678
8 Apr 17 #25
The OP's comment about the screen isn't accurate refer to the review on notebookcheck.net. The HP screen is very average as far as IPS's go, yeh obviously good viewing angles etc but that's the case for any IPS!

Also the comparison the OP drew with the Dell/Alienware deals is his initial post and their screens is wrong, they have a much higher Brightness and greater SRGB/Adobe RGB coverage check notebook check as well for their review of the Alienware 15r3

do you have a definitive review of the screen? or just going off 1 year old reviews of previous models? i've had my eye on this model for a while now and still haven't seen any in-depth review of it so i'm confused how you see, to know exactly how it performs.

my hp G62 (yes a budget laptop) lasted 13 months until all the plastics started cracking. The trackpad paint come off pathetic. I then went on to purchase a macbook pro which is still going strong 5 years later ( I have given it to my sister) and I am now using a macbook air which I hope will last me another 4 years.
I take it HP have not improved their game ?
cowtc
9 Apr 17 #43
This is very good specs for the price. Usually 1050ti laptops are around the £1k- £1.1k. The screen on these are very good for the price, other laptops around this price are sometimes TN panels which i think are awful
Picard123
9 Apr 17 #44
The screen is pretty mediocre according to a few 2017 reviews that comment on that. Brilly might not know much about laptop pricing cycles or VFM but he's potentially right about the screen.

That said, it's quite possible that HP are using a variety of different panels from different suppliers AUO, Chi Mei, LG etc which could explain the different perceptions of the screen quality.
brilly
9 Apr 17 #45
no 'definitive ones', tbh there only seems to be a few youtube ones atm - some of them say its good but then that really depends on opinion if they dont measure anything
have only seen one which had any actual figures and iirc it was apparently dim with very low colour space coverage
there didn't seem to be much backlight bleed though but that can depend on the filming but it may be better than previous panels
poor colours would put me off though straight away

Thought this YouTube review of the Omen 15 was interesting...

https://youtu.be/NvbUIG9Gvw8

This was a 'what I thought of the Omen 15 after living with it for a month' critique from a computer nerd. It's a bit windy but worth watching in full. His thoughts on the screen were that it was acceptable (despite being a bit dull) and interestingly that the colours of the screen improved once you install the new Foundation Windows 10 update.

Getting a new 1050/1050 Ti laptop has for me been a bit of a puzzle as there isn't a single stand-out laptop to buy. Not withstanding that the offer has now lapsed, after this review I'm thinking the Omen with the 1050 Ti might be the one that gives the best bang for the buck.

Did anybody buy this and successfully claim the Xbox Controller?

I waited weeks for mine. Spent the last 2 weeks phoning and emailing to find out what's happening and it finally arrived yesterday.
Unfortunately the box had been opened (the seal was broken) and one of the paddles is bent. I phoned HP this morning and they told me because I paid for it over 30 days ago it's now a warranty issue and I should contact Microsoft!
I guess that's why they make you wait 30 days from purchasing the laptop to claim the controller; so they don't have to deal with faulty ones.

ArthurDent1 to ocz

It took a lot of phone calls, emails and posts on their Facebook page for HP to finally acknowledge that they needed to replace my faulty one. The 2nd one was in a sealed box.

You definitely haven't got the faulty one they sent me, because despite me waiting in all day for their carrier they never bothered collecting it!
