To be fair, you bought a less 'polished' and generally cheaper drive 16 months ago (pre Brexit & it's implications on the value of the £) for more money than the near / better equivalent products in this deal. The only thing that differs is the that these are recertified, and in my experience that really hasn't been an issue as the several drives I have really haven't missed a beat.

Will defo work with an Xbox one, that's the main reason for my purchase. When you plug the device in, it will ask you to re-format the drive to work with Xbox One, click yes. Regarding the TV, I'm pretty sure it will, if your smart TV has an empty USB in slot, however, it really depends on Make / Model of the TV.

Looks like a good deal.
Does anyone know if the hard drives come in their original box? I want to get one for a friend of mine as a present.
I ask because I recently got a recertified My Book for myself, it came in a brown delivery box with just the disk and the accessories inside. I didn't care then since it was for me, but this time I want to make a present.
Cheers.

for people who keep missing especially the desktop drive deals there is a seller masquerading on ebay as two ,but literally its the same seller who keeps selling them as new direct from seller (WD) with plain packaging :stuck_out_tongue: mate of mine went against my advice band purchased 2 items from them because he though hell get full warranty sure as anything it turned out to be these re-certified drives with less than 6 months warranty the seller(s) also sells re-certified red drives with 6 months warranty separately but of course doesn't mention warranty is non transferable , so there is No warranty look at the links below just thought ill post here to warn ebayers to the ruse , my buddy is currently reporting the seller i think but i did tell him so hate to say it Shop 1
Thanks for the info, just FYI this deal is not for an eBay item, it's direct from the manufacturer. I tend to steer clear from eBay for reasons such as this.

yes i know bud i am a regular buyer from WD Store as well, the deal is hot , just wanted t let punters know that those who offer similar items on ebay which look like they have full warranty and "new" actually come from WD re-certificated store like the sellers who bulk buy from the WD Store and sell it as new with full warrnty on ebay i highlighted above scam artists really as they mislead buyers , but OP your deals is hot i find these re-certified products very good

Voted cold, their refurbished offers are always there this has been posted xxx times and seeing 31% off I was expecting 31% their normal refurbished price so please correct the the title as it is just normal price for a used drive especially being the older style they offer.

18 Apr 171#44
Your kidding right? Firstly, not only are the deals you have linked to expired, but your hyperlinks point to a completely different brand, model and size hard drive. You have just shared a 3.5 inch "desktop" hard drive that requires plugging into the wall mains, attempting to compare with a portable metal framed hard drive that doesn't require plugging in to the mains is like trying to compare a mobile phone with a hard wired house phone. Not to mention, the 2TB you shared was more expensive when in stock. Apples and Pears.

If they're so happy with the condition of the drives, why only 6 months vs 3 years for a brand new one? Paying half the price sounds like a bargain, but not if you lose 2 or 3TB of files after 7 months AND then have to replace the drive out of your own pocket.
Don't get me wrong here - I don't buy any other brand of HDD, but they do fail eventually. Make sure you've got a backup.

Xbox One questions
I assume this doesn't need a power supply, and will power itself from the console?
How do load times compare with the internal HDD? I know USB 3.0 is fast, but not sure whether to dip for this, or wait and upgrade to an external SSD.
frozencake
21 Apr 171#56
Will work absolutely fine, just format the drive when prompted. This is USB powered so no mains power supply
Ev0lution
21 Apr 17#57
Of course the SSD is faster.
But you aren't getting 3TBs of storage space on an SSD. Even 1TB is setting you back £280. You could get 3 of these for that.
If speed is your thing then you might want to consider a hybrid SSHD as they are far cheaper (under £100 for 2 TBs) and buy an external housing for it.
simonallsopp1
21 Apr 17#58
Fair enough, SSD is faster (to be fair I wasn't asking if SSD was faster).
But how does this drive compare with the internal HDD load times in an xbox one console? Essentially, do I get any performance benefit?
I currently have a 500gb xbone with a 500gb external USB 3 drive. My logic is if there is any performance benefit I'd buy the WD and move all of my content onto it, including what I currently store on the xbone HDD.
jinks28
21 Apr 172#59
USB3 external drive should be faster than the internal drive on standard xbone, simply because that console has a SATA2 interface on the internal drive. The xbones however has SATA3 so the speeds should be comparable.

The research is that you can get a new, 2 year warranty 2TB or 3TB drive - that doesn't require a Dropbox account for value added services - for less money (especially when the warranty is taken into account) than these refurbished drives, if you shop around.
People come here for deals - not to be railroaded into buying a shiny case with a second hand drive, limited warranty and for a higher cost than they need to meet.
Seagate is currently offering a free data recovery insurance plan with select new desktop drives - likely to be more useful to somebody who wants to store, say, family photos with a degree of assurance.
DingoDirk
24 Apr 17#67
This is currently £84.99 on Amazon or via Argos (3TB Seagate drive) and comes with a 2 year warranty.
Quite how spending £85 on a second hand drive with a limited warranty (given the nature of hard drives) and a shiny case represents a hot deal, is a mystery.
frozencake
24 Apr 171#68
Because these specific hard drives (3TB) sell for £130+ on Amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B011Z7E4C6 - this deal is not regarding seagate plastic casing hard drives
Plus couldn't give a toss about warranty really. None of the portable hard drives I've ever bought have died, so this to me is a very good deal as I saved £56

3tb seagate 3.5" is £85 on amazon, i cant see any 2.5" drives for that sort of money there... and theres a BIG difference between the two - the 3tb seagate needs a wall wart power adapter... the 2.5" drives are usb bus powered and a fraction of the size.
The power adapter with the 3.5" drives is no doubt a drawback for some people.
Given the fact that hard drives will, eventually, fail and that there's an element of pot-luck with early failure, I just don't understand why a six month warranty on a still fairly expensive drive would be considered a hot deal.
