Saw this last night on CPW, John Lewis had it at this price a while a go but it didn't come with the JBL speaker mod, seems like a killer of a deal. Just ordered mine. Cant see a better deal out on the market, I see the play version a bit cheaper but its nowhere near as a good a spec and its a lot thicker than this one.

You can't compare a SIM free, no contract deal on a phone with a 2 year commitment on a contract phone, strip out the cost of the contract then say that phone is a better deal than this one. That's comparing apples with oranges...

Note that i have not posted it as a deal. I clearly said that is the value to me...In my own budgetary world. In other words if i want an edge 7 i can get one by paying £312 more over 2 years without compromising on my phone contract. Hope that makes sense.

When you say 'You see the play version' - Moto Z Play?

I missed the Amazon.de deal on that and am after a good deal on that. The Z may have better specs in some areas but I want the bigger battery and 625 of the Play

I'm a fan of the Moto range, but I'm happy to compromise on battery to get more memory and a faster processor. Knowing I can get an add on battery pack helps. I prefer Moto for its cleaner Android experience without the bloatware associated with brands such as Samsung.

Without wishing to hijack this thread, that is its value to me.
I currently pay £17 a month on three unlimited data.
The deal i have gone for only last night iis one posted on hot uk deals at mobile phones direct and is £30 per month for the edge and on three's 30gb plan.
As i don't use 30gb each month then the difference is £13 per month TO ME. Which works out at £312 over 2 years to own the edge.
Scroll down to find the 30gb deal on three....

You stated originally this or the S7 Edge for 312 quid? as if it you could buy the S7 Edge for 312 quid when you can't buy the phone for that sort of figure unless you commit to a legally binding 2 year phone contract which can't in any way be compared with this deal. It's disingenuous to do this.

I hope it's better because I'm buying this to replace my LG G4 which broke down. From what I can see, the Moto Z seems to be good replacement.

i am typing this on my Moto z, got it for the same price directly from Moto a few weeks a go with speaker. lovely slim phone. the speakers is a bit chunky which is why i will be putting it on eBay(get £40 for it then makes phone cheaper)

As someone has mentioned there is no headphone jack, you get a USB c to aux adaptor. which does the job nicely. really haven't been a problem for me so far. battery is small but I've never had it not last a day even with Bluetooth left on.

great phone, good price, heat added.

FWIW i loved my LG G4 before it developed the bootloop problem. Tried a few phones but eventually settled on the Samsung S7. (currys ebay damaged box). Six months on and it's better then ever now it's got android 7 nougat. Cannot fault it. Couldn't live with the S7 Edge as i kept accidentally pressing the wrap around screen by accident. Is the S7 worth the significant extra cash over the Moto Z? Tricky one. The Moto Z deal is a very good one.

14 Apr 17 1 #34
Thanks, but rather stick with a 5.5" screen, or possibly 5.7" - so watching the G6 with interest.
If Xiaomi could get their act together in the camera dept we'd be fine, but none of the 2nd division Chinese manufacturers seem to be able to make a good all round camera, usually it's low light that let them down.

Brilliant deal. Heat added. I previously posted this comment on the similar Lenovo deal a few weeks ago, but I think it may help some people who are getting one, so here it is again...

1) Car chargers - Motorola have their own fast charging tech called turbo charge. Binatone make a licenced Moto turbo charger for the car. But it's comparatively expensive. You can use any generic Qualcomm Quick Charge 2 or 3 device to charge the phone, but you won't get the turbo top up speed. I use a quick charge 3 charger and I can Navigate, Bluetooth and stream music with the screen always on and the phone stays at 100%.
2) This phone is almost bloatware free, so consider downloading the Android Auto or similar car mode app, for safer hands-free use.
3) For voice commands you can either use the standard "OK Google" or you can use a longer customised "moto" phrase, but not both. I find the moto one is more powerful as it works even if the phone is in standby. Allowing you to make a call or turn the flashlight on from across the room without manually waking the phone. However keeping the microphone always on does use about 1% of your daily battery. The custom moto phrase is enabled or disabled in the Moto app.
4) Due to the slight curve on the edges of the screen the glass screen protector I tried was comparatively small compared to the screen. I've ended up buying a cheaper film protector instead, which covers a bit more of the screen. I'm happy with this Nilikin one, but would be interested to hear about other people's experiences.
5) The battery life has been acceptable for me, I expected far worse after reading the reviews. The early reviews were done with Marshmallow, but I think the newly improved Android Doze feature in Nougat may have significantly improved the battery life.
6) Use the Moto app to learn the "Actions" short cuts. Some of them are useful, like the twist to start the camera.
7) When migrating your data from your old phone to a new phone, all of your Google contacts, most of your apps, and many "Google Play Games" progress will migrate across seamlessly without you needing to do anything. However there are specialist apps that work on non rooted phones like SMS Backup and Restore and or Helium that will bring across stuff that normally doesn't migrate well.

I'd like to hear of your tips for this phone.

14 Apr 17 #38
The Nilkin screen protector says Pre Order as its not released?? Also, what case are you using?? Cheers.

I didn't bother with a case, in the box there is a herring bone "Style Shell" to protects the back of the phone and there is also a plastic bumper that protects the side. Leaving the screen open but protected (a bit) by the screen protector. When these get too tatty I will replace them with another "Style Shell" and this Incipio Bumper.

From the reviews of every case I looked at, buyers were complaining that the 3rd party cases had to be removed before you could attach a Moto Mod, even ones with the correct sized cutouts for the Moto Mods were too thick for the magnetic mods to attach correctly.

Gsmarena.com say it can't handle a day of normal use so you need to carry a charger, battery pack or buy the battery add on. It gets a fairly low endurance rating of 53 hours, one of the lowest scores I've seen on a recent phone.

from what i have read on various sites the droid version had a small mah battery and high levels of bloatware that affected the battery. It was also marshmallow. Its nougat available now which increases the battery somewhat; most of the newer reviews i read said that they used it as average ie web/music few calls and end of day it had about 20% charge remaining.

I am on THREE paying £9 PM for unlimted mins/text but only 6gb, only need 6gb as I am stuck at home with a broken leg so data not an issue. I've just ordered the Moto Z after tooing and throwing over the LG G5 with battery mod at Argos for £349.99 opted for this. However, even though I have ordered it going to keep it sealed just in case another deal for the LG G5 pops up in the next couple of days as the G6 is about to be launched on the 20th.

Long Story - Short(ish) version.
Ordered from CPW quickly as missed out on the 2 last deals.
Realised I had a JL gift voucher so emailed them for a price match.
As JL take a while to reply, phoned my local branch to see if they had stock and reserved.
Went to local branch and their stock was wrong so only had phone, but they would price match and send the MOD on.
When putting through till, a problem occured as they said they couldnt price match as they didnt sell it as bundle......
Kicked up a fuss, off the man went to get advice from a manager. Eventually came back and put the phone through for £230 and the MOD for £69, MOD will be with me shortly. Also got free coffee and cake voucher :smirk:
Later that evening, JL emailed to say they would Price match through the normal pay full price and then refund.
Went to CPW today to collect the phone ordered from them and then return it, but it hadnt turned up anyway, have to wait till Tuesday to cancel that one!

Taken a punt, concern on battery size, may miss the headphone jack, time will tell, but at this price worth the risk, replacing a moto x play, may buy power boost pack, had to order a load of USB C cables and converters for car work etc! May sell the speakers, bring price even lower, which means not much more than a moto g5 plus, this is a to deal for flagship phone.

John Lewis price matched but without the JBL speaker as it is a promotional deal. So perhaps the John Lewis deal is not that great even with 2 year warranty.

Thank you for your price match request for the Moto Z Smartphone, Android, 5.5", 4G LTE, SIM Free, 32GB, Black.

I have looked into your request and will be happy to match the price of £299.99 for the Moto Z Smartphone, Android, 5.5", 4G LTE, SIM Free, 32GB, Black (product code 83301122) seen at Carphone Warehouse.

As part of our never knowingly undersold policy, we only match the competitor on price and not promotions for free products or services. Therefore, I would not be able to offer the JBL Speaker for free with the phone.

This includes downloading a few apps and playing with different apps and games. I hope this help those who want to use this phone with daydream.

Well my JL order just arrived can't decide to keep it or not. I think half the time the challenge is more important!
tom_g
18 Apr 17 #119
I can't really see a reason not to keep it at this price - nothing in the price range compares in terms of specs (from a big brand) - moto mods are pretty cool and it comes with one - 2 yr JL warranty - was considering Samsung S8 and Google Pixel but can't justify the additional cost for not much more of anything. I chose this instead of an iPhone 7 - if I don't like it then I will go back to iPhone in a year or so.

Just picked up mine. Cheers OP. Did anyone that did a pick up have to verbally give the security number on the back of the card to the shop assistant and then type in your pin number for a £0.00 amount?

Phone delivered on time by CPW, first impressions, great phone for money, so thin!!!! likely to ebay the speakers as can't see me using them, tend to play music through my echo.

Needed quiet a few Secuirty updates and also updated to Android 7.0, before it was upto date.

Moto phones tend to be free of bloatware and as near Android experience as you can get outside buying a Google phone, but still load the Nova launcher which I like on my phoned due to customisation options.

Coming from a Moto X Play, my concern is going to be battery life, at the moment torn between the battery mod to boost capacity or fitting a ruggedised case, tend to go with the iBastion ones from Amazon.

Mine came yesterday and I fully concur on the multitude of security updates (bit of a pain in the ****) and the slippy bumper. I'm getting an Incipio Dual Pro case, adds to the phone heft but less chance of butter fingers me dropping it. I've also come from a Moto X Play and have concerns on the Battery, so far it seems to be performing well with the battery saving features of Nougat.

Up to you but I ordered my C and C from CPW on Saturday, still not in store. Since then, I requested a price match from JL, got it approved, ordered and collected the product the next day (2 days ago) and have had confirmation of the refund already.

picked mine up from CW yesterday, really happy with it! nice upgrade from a Moto x (2014). also got the wife a 64GB iPhone se for £369. seemed like a good deal for that too.

Best case to protect the camera bump?
ParsleyLion
21 Apr 17 #135
I don't think there's any doubt JL will honour your pricematch if you purchase within the 28 days. In the unlikely event they do just return the whole package for a refund. In my experience, JL's CS is is exemplary.

Mind you, someone's just had the last JBL Speaker from JL. :smirk:

The phone comes with the black herringbone 'Style Shell' which fits on the back covering the contacts and bringing the back out flush with the camera. See: Unboxing. You might want a shell over that. I'm looking for recommendations for a suitable cover for mine.

Decided to keep it. Wow it's thin! To be honest I prefer with the mod on. Don't feel like I'm going to snap it. JL processed my refund the day after delivery.(paid with PayPal)

Thanks to OP and everyone lse

Don't buy the Fuse Air Hybrid case as it gives no protection to the raised camera. I have this case and also the Sparin Moto Z case which is a good fit and also raised at the back to protect the camera. Anyone want to buy the Fuse case......

Now back up to £479.99, so looks like I got a good deal. After a couple of days use battery life looks to be holding up, optermised apps for battery life in settings so this maybe helping. Slightly annoying 3 are offering the Lenovo P2 for £209, which was another phone I was interested in particular for its is 5100mAh battery, but lower spec than Moto Z on screen, camera and processor, so as long as small battery does not prove to give issues down the line will be happy for a while.

Battery life is good-ish for me. Phone taken off charge 15 hours and 30 minutes ago, screen on time 2 hours 30 minutes including about 20 minutes of games and 10 minutes of youtube, about 1 hour of music - battery currently on 16% (screen brightness low most of the time)

Battery life is really impressive for me - especially considering I wasn't expecting a lot. It is easily matching my old S7 edge for my usage.

26 Apr 17 #144
Wonder what you're doing differently to me haha, perhaps I am expecting too much but taking it off charge at 6am I need to put it on charge around 10pm with about 2-3 hours usage.

Did anyone get the Nillkin screen protector? Mine seems to have added an annoying Matt effect to the display. I did remove the two outer films. Also, the two holes at the bottom of the protector are also nowhere near the holes in the Z.

Anybody else have a sort of speaker rattle or distortion esp noticeable with the notification tones? less so with music from the speaker?

Agree, Nillkin screen protector does not align correctly. The 2 holes at the bottom align perfectly to the top holes though! Doesn't cover the edges of the screen either....

There are 2 (proximity?) sensors under the circular cutouts. You can see them clearly on the white phones, but they're not easy to spot on the black phones.
