The Flying Circus is where Monty Python started - 4 series of TV shows aired between 1969 and 1974 in the UK. Dubbed 'The Fathers of Modern British Comedy', it was seen as the start of a new generation of TV comedy when it hit the mainstream, and was certainly seen as controversial in its day. Topical issues were included but silliness was the main theme, and seeing everyday stuff at a tangent was the order of the day. The guys classical education also is reflected in some of the more esoteric pieces. Now with a huge cult following, the Flying Circus appeals to both young and not-so-young.
Alternatively, There's the Almost Everything boxset for £13.50, which includes: Monty Python's Meaning of Life, Monty Python's Life of Brian, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, as well as 'And Now for Something Completely Different, along with The Flying Circus.

We drunkenly stumbled upon the "you're no fun anymore" sketches years ago, and we used that phrase to death afterwards, so might have to get this to check it out again! Already have a special edition Holy Grail with loads of extra and commentary but am still tempted by films box set...

The only thing that ruins Monty Python is people quoting it.

You should brace yourselves for disappointment. Monty Python was ground breaking but looking back on it now after seeing many subsequent shows influenced by it that is no longer true. Python sketches fall flat as often as they work. As Michael Palin put it:
"People forgive you the things that don't work," he said. "A lot of Python was crap, it really was. We put stuff in there that was not really that good, but fortunately there were a couple of gleaming things that everyone remembers while they've forgotten the dross."
I love the Python team at their best. Their films are epic and if you want the best sketches I recommend the ones put together into the 1971 release "And Now for Something Completely Different".
But don't try revisting the old shows again, you will be disappointed.

Even the not so good sketches are way better than anything now. And that's not hyperbole - its fact.
