You have to wonder whether they were under some level of financial pressure and the new investment necessitated the operation morphing into a marketplace. It's difficult to see why they'd do it otherwise as it doesn't benefit the consumer and unlikely to benefit the merchants, even if the small ones a get commission free deal, since price conscious buyers, i.e. most on the net today, are now put off and unlikely to return.
Probably a few Prime memberships taken up this week as result of the changes. Certainly something I'm thinking about.

What a big shame that we have lost Flubit. The originality that I liked about Flubit has been taken away. It's just heading towards being the same Amazon style site like all the others. Sad, sad day. I hope it now falls over and fails.
