Totally different, the kindle fire is a tablet similar to an ipad or android tablet, you can read ebooks on it but with it being backlit you cannot read in bright sunlight and is better for playing games and browsing the internet, and the battery is not as good, whereas this is front lit and can be used in sunlight to read, battery lasts about a month and is easier to hold for reading books. I have a tablet and one of these and this offers a much better reading experience then using the kindle books app. Hope this helps

Does the backlight work well on these? Genuinely without strain? Plus, is it more akin to a lamp on than the bluish light of tablet, phone etc? Which makes some people wake up more?

You can also try using the desktop app called calibre it's free!... it can convert anything into the kindle format and will make it like a book! It's easy and quick too

Get yourself a cover as well to protect it, and it also comes out of standby when you open it. The official Amazon leather covers often crop up on ebay.
It has a basic web browser that works well with Wikipedia and low-text websites.
Also integrates with GoodReads nicely.

Does anyone know how to switch the device off, or is standby(screen off) the only option ?? thanks
I have quite a lot PDF books, and I would rather not get so many hard copies as they are multiple volumes (etc). Is it possible to transfer PDF books to the Kindle? Thank you.

A year ago, the standard offer was 79.95. It is a great device for reading, but the price remains stubbornly high.
And yes, you can read in bed without the light being too bright - in fact you can turn it down so much that you cannot read anything. Unfortunately, there is no way to set the light colour, it is always a cool slightly greenish white.
