The All-New Kindle Paperwhite is more readable than ever. Featuring a higher resolution screen and a font that's been specially designed for digital screens, plus your favourite returning features such as an improved Carta E-Ink screen, a built-in light that won't tire your eyes and a long battery life, the Kindle Paperwhite takes eReading up a notch.
Next-generation reading experience
At 300 pixels per inch, the All-New Kindle Paperwhite features twice as many pixels as the previous generation, for sharp, print-quality text. It also includes an exclusive font, Bookerly, which has been inspired by the best fonts in modern print books and crafted to ensure great readability at any font size.
Built-in light
Paperwhite features an innovative built-in light to deliver a brighter, evenly-lit display. It guides light from above towards the display instead of projecting it towards the users eyes like with a traditional backlit display, reducing the chance of screen fatigue. It also illuminates the screen instead of the entire room, so you can read in the dark without disturbing others.
E-ink touch screen
Designed to look and read like real paper, Kindle’s E-Ink screen features a matte screen and no backlighting, preventing glare so you can read just as easily at the beach as you would in your living room. The responsive touch grid allows you to interact with menus, settings and even highlight words and phrases simply by touching the screen.
Recharge once a month, not once a day
Kindle Paperwhite benefits from an incredibly long battery life. You’ll be able to go for six weeks without needing to recharge. The included USB cable makes it simple to recharge too- simply plug into any chargeable USB port or plug adapter to reinvigorate your Kindle’s battery.
Can I ask a dumb question? How is this better than the £35 kindle fire?

Totally different, the kindle fire is a tablet similar to an ipad or android tablet, you can read ebooks on it but with it being backlit you cannot read in bright sunlight and is better for playing games and browsing the internet, and the battery is not as good, whereas this is front lit and can be used in sunlight to read, battery lasts about a month and is easier to hold for reading books. I have a tablet and one of these and this offers a much better reading experience then using the kindle books app. Hope this helps

Does the backlight work well on these? Genuinely without strain? Plus, is it more akin to a lamp on than the bluish light of tablet, phone etc? Which makes some people wake up more?
Read all the blurb but they're going to say that! Was more interested in how people found it in the real world!

Get yourself a cover as well to protect it, and it also comes out of standby when you open it. The official Amazon leather covers often crop up on ebay.
It has a basic web browser that works well with Wikipedia and low-text websites.
Also integrates with GoodReads nicely.

Does anyone know how to switch the device off, or is standby(screen off) the only option ?? thanks
I have quite a lot PDF books, and I would rather not get so many hard copies as they are multiple volumes (etc). Is it possible to transfer PDF books to the Kindle? Thank you.

The Kindle Paperwhite can read PDF documents natively — in other words, without converting them.

A year ago, the standard offer was 79.95. It is a great device for reading, but the price remains stubbornly high.
And yes, you can read in bed without the light being too bright - in fact you can turn it down so much that you cannot read anything. Unfortunately, there is no way to set the light colour, it is always a cool slightly greenish white.

I just bought one - can my other half read in bed without the light waking me up like an iPad does?

Annoying that they make you pay £10 to turn off the "Special Offers" = SPAM
