Why is this hot at over ten quid when you can get a good solid brand AA one with battery for under six quid??

Correct. And no, you are not taking away them from 999 calls they have people in place just for fire safety and prevention. If you have young children 4+ then it's really helpful to have Fireman Sam come around and explain things to them and they even get them to draw a fire escape from their bedroom.
