So I have an unactivated licence for the 2016 version, but activating that later this week. Can I buy this and add it to my portfolio and then launch after the first expires ?

You can license stack inside the license area of kasperksy products.
For those who brought 200 licenses at the cheap price they do expire now (i think after 3 or 4 years) ..

Go and look at places like AV-Test or AV Comparatives for detections and performance. It's been well known for decades that running two antivirus alongside each other increases the potential for conflicts and performance issues, and they don't always increase protection levels like you think they will. Using three increases the risk even further.
Without even taking into account features like banking protection, parental control, password storage or file encryption/back, do the free AVs you mention have things like HIPS and decent firewall protection?
I suppose I could also ask you if you have any evidence to substantiate your claims that Lavasoft Adaware, AVG, Malwarebytes and Windows Defender used in combination are better than Kaspersky...

can you point to any real evidence to substantiate either of those 2 statements?

Kaspersky beats all of those in terms of detection, features and it certainly will in terms of performance, and why would you want to use 3 antivirus at once? That's a disaster waiting to happen.

Kaspersky no better than Lavasoft Adaware, AVG, Malwarebytes, Windows Defender used in combination

I would prefer Windows own Defender/AV........it's free!
I would rather spend my money on Malwarebytes than any other AV product for my home computers

So in that case the 1 year clock starts ticking for all 10 installs as soon as you activate the 1st device?

I've got a few phones but will be upgrading to a single phone hopefully soon. If I apply it to 3 phones for the short term will I be able to uninstall KTS and still be able to use it on different 10 devices in the future?
Good price though, I've been watching on Ebay but would rather buy from Amazon.

In my experience (used Kaspersky for about 10 yrs) it is usually pretty easy to move licences between devices. i.e. Take off a retiring PC/phone and transfer to another device.
But...Remember that the licence period starts when you first use a licence from a ten licence pack.

Non-Barclays customers can just type in any account number and will work.
