Thanks OP I've gone for one. Got to get the bike now; anyone know of a Triumph Scrambler going for a good price?

Nice and light at 1400g, makes my Shoei Neotec seem positively leaden!! Great price but doesn't do so well in the SHARP test (and I know many people take a jaundiced view of these anyway)

Great price but I found hjc wasn't quite snug enough for my head.
I ended up buying an Agv gt veloce and couldn't be happier.

It might be old thinking now but it used to be that the only filler inside the actual helmet was basically polystyrene - surprisingly effective but can only be used once, hence don't drop it! I assume that's still the case so I did used to pay attention to the Sharp rating but I'm now of the feeling that there probably isn't that much difference between helmets as long as they're all certified, if you get me.
A heavy or uncomfortable 5* helmet wouldn't be better for you than a light one that fits perfectly and gives you confidence but is only 2 or 3*. Interested to hear if people agree or disagree though.

Dropping the lid is more likely to damage the outside than the liner. The polystyrene liner compresses in an accident from the pressure of your head inside it. If you just drop it then the liner won't get compressed so it shouldn't be an issue. Not that I'm encouraging anyone to drop their lid! I certainly agree that a helmet that fits properly is far more important than any star rating it might be given. That's why you should never buy mail order without trying it on.
