I wanted to bring this to people's attention as I believe it was missed in my original post, then voted cold as no one could confirm if it was true. I now have confirmation it works.

So, to have Hive installed by British Gas it is £250, they are now offering a £9 a month offer where you pay £9 for 24 months totalling £216, you could do this to get it cheaper but you can get it for even cheaper...

There is a flaw in the T&C's where if you have it installed then cancel 15 days AFTER its been installed (not before) you pay £150 to get out of the contract. You do not cancel before the 14 days otherwise you lose the remote control element of Hive (not being able to control on phone). Once you pay the £150 fee to exit the 24 month contract that's it, all done. You have Hive for £150 supplied, installed and setup.

I did this back in February, I originally thought I would have to pay at least one months subscription of £9 but did not

All you have to do is call 0800 691 1406, organise a install date then 15 days after installation, call British Gas and cancel the contract

Note totake advantage of this you have to be an existing British Gas customer (energy, HomeCare or a 5 year warranty)

My original post - http://www.hotukdeals.com/misc/hive-9-a-month-150-cancellation-fee-making-159-installed-2601223?p=30528586#post30528860

T&C's below:

https://www.britishgas.co.uk/smart-home/hive.html#caveats

[1] Available to new and existing HomeCare customers only. If you cancel your HomeCare product and have no other products with British Gas, the price you pay for your Hive Active Heating will increase to £10 per month. If you purchase an eligible British Gas product again in the future, your price will go back down. Prices subject to change.

[2] The subscription is ongoing and will continue until cancelled. Cancellation fees apply in the first 24 months. A fee of £150 will be charged if cancelled within the first 12 months and £70 if cancelled after 12 months but before 24 months.

FULL T&C's here - https://www.britishgas.co.uk/aem6/content/dam/britishgas/downloads/Hive/Hive-active-heating-subscription-terms-and-conditions.pdf

I wouldn't know how it's possible without the motorised TRV as each of these have their own thermostat and then open and close as required, this allows you to let each radiator call the boiler on demand. I guess with some fancy plumbing, valves and additional thermostats you could zone each room, but that sounds more trouble than it's worth.

The Evohome needs no special plumbing involved, just replace the existing TRVs on the radiators with the Evohome ones, (make sure that the exisitng TRV's are compatiable. We replaced all ours with the generic ones from Screwfix then plonked the Honeywell TRV on top) Then you just create your rooms on the main unit and link each individual TRV to the appropriate room. You can allow manual overide on the radiators if you wish and also set a maximum temperature, which I've done for the daughters bedroom, not allowing her to put past 21.

Thanks for the reply. So how would a zoned system work without these individual TRVs?

I was lead to believe that the pipe work needs to be set up for these zoning systems to work.

I'm getting the whole house replumbed from scratch so if the piping work could be kept simple, I could save money there and use the money for the evo home system.

My understanding was that when you are zoning a house, the different zones have to be piped in a particular way for the zoning to work.

12 Apr 17 #129
I phoned up BritishGas to make sure this was correct. She confirmed that you can indeed cancel, pay the £150 and the device is yours with the remote services still active. However she said the warranty they provide would no longer be valid as you are finishing the contract early.

I think i'll just go with the Argos offer for £199
AbandonedTrolley
12 Apr 17 #128
That would get expensive quickly, as without having the TRV on each rad they would just fire up whenever another room would demand heat from the boiler.

You'd be looking at £421 for the Control Panel + 6 TRV's from Plumb Centre and then £573 for another 12 TRV's from Plumbnation. Almost a £1000 investment, depending on what your heating bills are that might take some time to recoup. Although the advantage is that you can make every room comfortable and not have to manually mess about with TRV's when you want one room to get warm and the others aren't being used.

Have couple off sonoff switches for remote control of heating and hot water cost me £3.99 each
Can program timers on them as well (timer better than Hive) not got thermostat control did not
really need it . But can get sonoff TH with thermostat control for £7 if required
Yes takes bit of ingenuity to wire in, but plus side mine both in heating terminal box and
no hub cluttering place up .Dead simple to set up software been 100% reliable and loads
cheaper than Hive/Nest .Not knocking this deal just thought this maybe cheap alternative

Because the weather outside makes a difference to how quickly your house heats up and cools down. (Unless you live in a modern and well designed enough building that it stays neutral all year round. And we live in the UK. So that's not very likely)

So if the thermostat knows what it's doing outside, it can alter the pattern of your heating accordingly. ie. It's proactive, rather than reactive. Makes a considerable difference.

I can only speak from the experience of a far more evenly heated flat, and lower gas bills, since I switched to what I use now compared to the dumb version before it.
Robbo11
11 Apr 17 #123
You shouldn't normally set the thermostat to any more than 24°C anyway as that is the maximum comfortable room temperature before it starts to get uncomfortably hot for most people and needing to set it to 27°C would tend to suggest your home is poorly insulated or you have an inefficient boiler. Though every house will vary, a generally accepted rule is that for every degree you increase your thermostat, it costs you an extra £70 a year.

No need for any pipework changes, you fit the Evohome TRVs to your existing radiators. Then create "zones" and add which radiators you want to be grouped together.

Nope, you've lost me.

I had my heating on timer, 3 x 2 hours, over and above that I was putting heating on on colder days/nights, and mostly leaving on until house was toasty then switching the heating off, thus wasting energy, hence why I said 'at least 6 hours daily'.

So, I'm 'guessing' I've went from 8 hours or so (Scottish weather can be harsh, and after working outdoors for sometimes 10hours a warm house to come back to is vital IMO), and 3 months later my average is (just had to double-check) 1 hr 30 min daily, peaking at 3 hours and can be as little as 30 mins.

Definitely saving me money :sunglasses:

A load of junk, it supposedly learns your heating needs instead of setting the times which is just stupid.
The thermostat is so power hungry it had to have a power supply instead of battery's with makes it even more useless.

You set your thermostat to come on at a temperature of around 5c, just the same as if you had a frost thermostat, it doesn't matter what the temperature is outside as it's the temperature inside that you need to monitor, really don't know why you are talking about linking to weather stations or online weather forecasts, your thermostat inside will bring the heating on and stop and pipes freezing

Having had both systems to test for 3-4 months i can confirm for stability and ease of use i would recommend Hive.

Can be purchased directly from BG for £149 fitted (did mine around 8 months ago. I only have boiler cover with BG and having Hive fitted by them gives you lifetime guarantee as long as your a BG customer whether you buy fuel or just systems cover with them.

If you have problems with the connection dropping or your receiver often goes "offline" contact BG and blame poor connectivity between the devices and request a booster i did and got myself 2 free signal boosters! (now maintains a good connection throughout the house) have also added plugs and light bulbs which work a treat on schedule when away from home for added security (purchased from Maplins @ 20% discount with a free £5 gift card as purchase was over £10!) alternatively at present there is a 30% discount on accessories via the Hive app.

You won't see major savings immediately but in the time I've had it especially over the winter period my bills have been reduced and according to my energy meter a lot less Gas and electric being used as the thermostat helps to regulate temp and turn off the heating when the desired room temp is reached, so your heating is not constantly on.

Hope that helps!

You replace your current radiator valves with the wireless ones. Most are standard fit but you can buy accessories if your's are different. No pipe work required. Simple DIY!

With Evohome you create zones out of the wireless TRVs. For example you could set Hallway and Living Room as one zone and then Bedroom and En-Suite as another zone. Then when in operation, you can set Zone 1 to 23c and Zone 2 to 20c etc

Works well with Amazon Echo too with "Alexa, set Room Name/Zone Name to 22c" etc.

1 of the best £200 items I've got..I have the Hive (1s edt.thermostat).but Nest etc all work the same.
u never need look at the thermostat as its all there on ya fone/tablet etc..
As to what these WiFi heating systems compare to.its what an electric blanket does to ya bed before u get in it.ie warming it up before u get in.
When leaving the shops or work/family/friends house.it don't matter when u decide to leave these places, the heating is off..!.
Soon as u get in the car to come home u can switch the heating on.
No need to rely on timers that are set and can't be changed if your late home etc..

You'll wish u had got this before the winter & a long time ago..
Had mine 3yrs and I'd never be without it (WiFi heating) again..
EBay/amazon have the diy kits.
British gas fitted mine but I don't pay anything monthly as u don't need to.

The subscription fees for things like this annoy me. £9 a month in order to access to a basic API that sends very little data and is accessed a few times a day at most. It's obscene money.

They could quite easily let the thermostat host its own web interface (much like your router almost certainly does) and you wouldn't have your heating system held hostage by a third party who may decide to disable or discontinue your service at any moment.

Then there's the security. Increasing numbers of botnets are being fueled by connected devices with shoddy security punching a big hole in your network that anyone can get in.

11 Apr 17 #102
Probably fine then.

Mine went onto a (now) 6/7 year old Worcester Greenstar combi. Easy fitting. PITA dismantling the boiler housing to actually do the fitting ....
AzeemB
11 Apr 17 #101
To elaborate, the nest 'heat link' (fitted to the boiler) can provide 12v supply to the nest thermostat, so, you can rewire the old thermostat cable to send 12v to the thermostat, and therefore don't require the usb charger (supplied). The nest thermostat then communicates wireless with the 'heat link'.

This has some benefits and disadvantages depending on your own requirements.
good; dont have to change batteries
bad; can't install it permently without a wall socket somewhere

sancheez
11 Apr 17 1 #97
It depends what you already have and whether you're going for a version that does heating only (combi) or hot water as well (separate tank). Mine was simple on a combi. Two wires - which the original dumb controller was already connected to. Just replace with the two wires for the smart thermostat receiver. Much the same as a plug. Pulling the boiler apart enough to actually get at the connections was the trickiest bit.

But on another setup, it may be completely different.

And how does your heating know if it's going to be cold enough to freeze pipes? I have a smart thermostat linked to a weather station in my back garden. So it will only come on if it's actually cold enough outside to warrant it. If I didn't have the weather station, it would use the online weather forecast for my area.
takkischitt
11 Apr 17 #96
Anyone know how easy these things are to fit yourself?
spenspuma
11 Apr 17 #95
Eh?

The scenario is that you use your phone to work the thermostat....you then lose your phone. If you don't ALSO have a computer or laptop then you'll be freezing cold unless you have another device

The hive is an absolute doddle to install yourself, especially if you have a wireless thermostat like a Honeywell unit already as the wiring is just a swap job. Took me 30 minutes (and then another 30 to decide where to place the thermostat!)

The latest version of Nest also has hot water control
spicemines
11 Apr 17 #91
I was an early adopter with Hive and got it free when I switched to British Gas a few years back.
Before, I had a Honeywell 1980s 5 day timer that controlled both hot water and heating. It was antiquated and was such a pain not being able to set different times for the weekend etc.
The benefit of Hive over the Nest is that it controls the hot water as well if you have that type of heating system.

If you are looking to replace an old controller/timer with Hive you will not regret it all and cost wise it would be the same as buying a more traditional 7 day timer and getting someone in to fit that!

sancheez
11 Apr 17 #88
Boiler dependent.

Some are simpler than others. Mine was as simple as wiring a plug. But others can be trickier.

I paid about half this for my Netatmo and installed it myself. Two years down the line, it's still doing an excellent job.

11 Apr 17 #86
Also, does anyone know why the nest one wires in to the wall where the old thermostat was, and the hive takes batteries? Do they both do the same thing? (ie send the heating command back to the boiler, just nest runs along the cable and hive sends it wirelessly?)

Just booked this in but think I will cancel the whole thing. If I stop being a British Gas customer (which I probably will as they are not the cheapest) then I will have to pay £10 a month in order for it to keep working. Argos have it on offer for £199 at the moment with installation and it won't cost me any more if I stop being a British Gas customer in the future. Or I might get John Lewis to price match it as they have a 2 year guarantee...

I also think that surely all these things would be so dramatically improved in they wirelessly controlled the TRV on each rad. Take for example my attic bedroom, the mrs gets ready up there in the morning so the rad is on, but it's so wasteful heating for 4 hours in the evening. whats the best one if I wanted my house zoned. got a 4 storey house and the idea of running all the rads for the house when we are just mooching about downstairs don't seem economical. minimum 2 zones(basement and ground floor together and 1st and 2nd flr together) but depending on cost could do more zones.

don't want the ability to control every individual rad as that's overkill. with hive, the idea of paying £9 p/m puts me off.

11 Apr 17 1 #68
27 degrees? are you all sat around in your undercrackers? Plus thermostats don't work like that, just because you set it higher doesn't mean it warms the house up quicker. The Average "comfortable" living temperature is supposedly 21 degrees (although i normally have my rads at 19 or 20 as thats hot enough for me)

But back to your question setting your thermostat to a constant 20 degrees will be more effecient than flicking the heating on to 27 degrees (if you let it to get up to that temperature) every time your cold.
Mr.No
11 Apr 17 #67
Nest and Hive are similar (no individual radiator control). Honeywell Evohome (with wireless TRVs) gives you the best control and efficiency.

I think hive is great having inherited it when moving home.

One thing I would say their CS is a bit lacking... As the hub was linked to previous owner's hive online account they told me I had to pay £80 to replace (having previously told me I could unlink the current account and assign my own).

Luckily the old owner agreed to let me have his login details so all good.

Definitely helps to put the heating on an hour before you arrive home

I do. I use the same amount of hot water year-round. So you can take that out of the equation.

Amazon have price matched!!!

I wanted them too but I've still not convinced my husband that we should buy this..I am due a boiler service too so not sure whether to get the home care for 1 month and then cancel that too. decisions decisions.

11 Apr 17 #54
I'm undecided on whether to go for honey well or hive. Major factor is the price difference. :/

My husband doesn't want either but £143 at Argos is tempting!! Hope Amazon price match as I have some vouchers.

Do i have to get a plumber to install or can it be easily installed yourself?

Internet - access to information form all over the worl
Hive - saves you getting off you backside and walking 6 feet to the thermostat

If thats a question for me then the simple answer is, I don't.

I made a point on the Google home deal thread last week that people who seem to have an issue with being spied on are the same idiots that have been posting their every move on Facebook for years.

My question on here is, which is better and why?

I've read countless comparisons and I'm still not sure. Its always nice to find someone who has first hand experience of both.

Seems like anything would have saved you hundreds, even a standard thermostat.

Can't comment on the efficiency of this, I went with the Honeywell Evohome setup allowing us to control each room individually. Higher setup cost (about £421 for 6 rads) but savings should be higher as each room/radiator gets its own thermostat and control.

I have the two zone Hive. Had it about a year and very pleased with it. Works flawlessly. Paid up front though on a Black Friday offer.

Couldn't you just set the existing timer and thermostat to the correct times and levels?

If you are saving MASSIVELY then it points to you having not set things correctly with the old timer and thermostat.

11 Apr 17 #45
Highly recommend these smart thermostats. I have the Nest 3rd gen I guess the Hive is similar.
If you spend a lot of time at home best turning the 'learning' aspect off otherwise it gets confused.
I just had a timer previously and my heating bills are much lower now.
Also my elderly mum has a Nest and I can check and adjust the temperature of her house during the winter months from the same iOS app making sure her house is warm and avoiding the risks of hypothermia. There is a simple to use dial on the Nest to turn and adjust the temperature manually, the Nest can be placed in any room (kitchen not ideal) on its cradle plugged into the wall.

Did this about 6 months ago. Tried double checking with the CS lady I was right and she had to check to confirm. All went through fine for me. Had to have boiler cover at the time though but I needed a service anyway which is included.

Is the hive wired to the boiler or is it wireless.
My current thermostat is wireless.

Hive has saved me hundreds already, only been in 4 months, bills were crazy high due to an uncontrollable thermostat and timer, now the temp is regulated and controllable when home or away, hot water on for just a couple of hours a day, made a massive difference ! Paid about £120 in a Black Friday deal, plumber fitted it for £20

The benefit for me is that all I could do was put heating on a timer. So it was either on or off at set times. Now I can set it to come on 'if the temperature falls below'. So, when I used to go on holiday in winter months I would leave it timed to come on to prevent pipes freezing in case we got a cold snap. None of that any more. So it's saved money there. Also, I used to have it timed to come on for us coming in from work, but these days the temperature is fluctuating wildly and it would be silly to have it on when it's 16 degrees, but then the next day might be 10, so I switch it on to boost as I leave the office. Also I only had a clock timer so didn't have an option to change weekend times - I can with hive. I just badgered the engineers every time they came until I got it on a deal at £150, fitted there and then.

I went for nest deal at £155 from b&q. Was simple to install as I've got a wireless thermostat already. I looked at the hive but it's so damn ugly l. Also I not have nest smoke detectors and hue bulbs so all works nicely with each other.

Is it really saving money if you are at home all day? I can understand turning it off if out of the house, but surely it does not save if you are actually at home all the time.
sprite127594 to ian18
10 Apr 17 #25
id say the only way these things save money is if you go out and leave your heating on. Then you can remotely turn it off (if you remember) or if you have geo tagging going on. Otherwise there just a very expensive thermostat.

I have 2 separate thermostats and controls in the house. Will this £150 deal replace them both and still allow independent control of both?

No will only allow control of one zone
AzeemB to Gozer
10 Apr 17 1 #17
salus thermostat has an addon which allows you to control a second zone. Its cheaper than having 2 nest thermostats. But is simpler in what it can do.
kudos1uk to Gozer

Hive can do multi zone, you need an extra thermostat, just call them and get a price for the multi zone option, you probably pay a one-off upfront fee for the extra stat.
