But since the fitting is almost as important as the prescription for the lenses (particularly with bifocals or varifocals) it's difficult to see how ordering online can give anything like the same standard as buying somewhere that takes precise measurements and fits them to the individual.

I did this last time, and it all went fine, though I do have a pretty basic prescription.

I got one pair tinted (£10 extra) so I had a pair of sunglasses for driving.

I'm sorry if I'm being incredibly dense here, I probably am :smiley: , but with them being an online operation and hence not having the traditional in person fitting, how do they get to determine what prescription of lenses you require in the glasses?

Do you have to enter the details of your own prescription online? or do they have some means of measuring your vision online?, though I can't see how that would possibly work with the variety of screens and set ups people have.

Would be very interested in taking this offer up as my glasses are very old and somewhat scratched but I don't know where I put my original glasses prescription, not even sure if I got one included with my last two pairs actually....

I go to Tesco for a free eye test - worth going if you've not been for years as they can spot any other health issues that way.
I got my prescription printed out and have bought my glasses online like this for the past 5 years.
Enter your prescription details, measure your pupillary distance (tape measure or ruler in front of a mirror) - job done.

Great for basic glasses, but with my prescription (varifocal thin reactive) they are over 300 quid, so no cheaper than specsavers, especially if you factor in the 95 quid work gives me toward my glasses, but these guys don't accept the voucher.

How do you get your pupillary distance? Specsavers refused to give it to me. I feel like it needs to be precise

You have to type in your prescription and then it is all dome for you. You can even upload a pic so you can see how they will look on you. Its basic but gives you an idea. I ow have 4 pairs of glasses from them - all basic lenses without any coating because it is cheaper to get new glasses then to get them coated!!!

I bought these last time the deal was on. The service was actually really good, delivery and quality of the glasses had no issues. Problem was that the fit wasn't amazing, I could bend the frames to fix that. But after an hour or two trialling them I could tell the prescription was a bit off (my fault I'm sure, not theirs). Luckily they had a return label in the bag and I had absolutely no trouble returning them and getting a refund.

Definitely worth the price, I think I was just unlucky!

Just do it yourself in a mirror to get your PD and you definitely need to change optician.

I got my pd slightly off once and as I had a medium to high prscription the glasss gave me headaches. I think glasses direct do free refunds but to save the hassle they also let you send them a pair of your old glasses from which they can take the exact pd measure. Pretty handy.

So is the PD basically just the distance between your eyes or something else?

Was really excited for this but need an eye test first as I don't have my original prescription and it's getting on for 5 years old anyway, was hoping I could get a free eye test e.g. Tesco Opticians but the earliest appointment anywhere near me is 28th April by which time this deal will be long gone. What's the point of free eye tests if they don't have enough staff to do them :disappointed:

As I thought. Maybe OK for a very basic prescription, but the lack of anyone taking proper measurements, and providing a fitting/checking service afterwards would put me off. It's by no means unusual to have to send frames/lenses back to be remade, and if it's an all-in service that's never a problem.

Asda prices aren't so much more than these guys (and probably cheaper in some cases) and for that you get the full service. Specsavers, though, are far more expensive. They used to be cheap - now they're well known they're just profiteering.

They're a great company, I managed to completely cock up my pupil distance and they fixed it for me quickly with no fuss

A huge difference. I'm all for cheap glasses, and I'm no supporter of high-priced opticians, but the Pupillary Distance is critical if you're going to avoid problems using the spectacles. My big concern about all these online firms is that if there are any problems caused by the failure to take complete and accurate measurement, you're going to have a sub-standard pair of glasses, but possibly without being aware of the fact.

Every so often, MoneySavingExpert has a discount code, usually posted here. In winter, it's money off and free delivery, last offer came to £15 for 2 pairs. In the summer or autumn, there's a chance of another saving code that includes money off tints. Over the last 4 years, I've ordered normal glasses, and if the frames were good enough to get tinted I've then waited for the extra discount code before ordering again.

Thinking of going to specsavers for a free eye test as they have a coupon on their page you can print for the free eye test. Anyone else used SpecSavers for their eye test? and if so how did you find them to be?

Just wondering why they were included in MSE's recent list of free eye test options, wonder if their is some hidden small print where you have to get the glasses with them if you take the free eye test....

Found some cheap specs in AliE. All Inc lense for ~£10. They say they're a real optician in China. You send your prescription and pd. Anyone tried it before? I suppose it's not much different to this?

There are online tools out there that let you measure your pupil distance with the webcam on your computer. I tried posting a link but I must've contravened rules as it was pulled by the moderators.

Try searching Google with the terms "pupil distance" (in the inverted commas) and "webcam" and you should come up with some links.

There are also apps out there that will do the measurement too.
