The model variants are quite confusing. But I spent weeks researching these a while back, so I will explain the fruits of my hard labour for you.

In simple terms my advice would be the following

If you have solely hard floors: V6 Fluffy / V6 Total Clean (Fluffy tends to be cheaper, but TC is a better machine for carpets)
If you have a mix of hard floors/carpets: V6 Total Clean (don't even consider the Absolute; see note below)
If you have just carpet: V6 Animal / V6 Total Clean / V6 Absolute (note that the Animal has the lowest powered motorised tool for carpets, followed by total clean, followed by absolute)

The Absolute has the highest powered motorised tool for carpets, but it does not come with the new (soft roller) hard floor tool. It comes with an older (flat) version, that it not as effective. Also note: you cannot attach the new soft roller hard floor tool to the Absolute; it does not fit that model.

Obviously the above advice is not tuned to price; merely which is the best (in my view) for each flooring situation.

My recommended 'best of both worlds' or 'best all rounder' would be the Total Clean, which is £249 on Dyson's own website brand new, or £229 if you call up as an existing customer I understand; £202 refurbished is a very decent price.

This base model "V6" isn't really good value in my opinion

The products are manufactured overseas but the highly skilled engineering is done in the UK.
It's not the just the issue of jobs but rather quality jobs that are paid well, unlike with Uber and Deliveroo paying their "contractors" below minimum wage.
It's the reason why James Dyson in investing in engineering universities because that's where the UK are currently lacking. We don't need more low quality jobs that leave individuals stuck when a company seizes to exists or decide to move operations to another country.

Got one of the refurbed V6 Total machines last year. The device itself had been used but works fine. The accessories looked brand new.

At their current prices I would go for the Animal.

Struggling to decide which v6 cordless to get? Is the Total clean with its direct drive roller that much better than the standard v6?
skyzero to Shovon
14 Apr 17 #20
Is the difference between the V6 standard (this) and V6 animal is that the animal comes with a mini motorised tool, and different colour scheme?

The animal is ~£32 more, but the mini motorised tool can be bought separately for about £23.

Edit: Scrap that last sentence - its £23 for a used mini motorised tool. Hmm I'm tempted to opt for the animal instead.

Just been reading about the new Dyson V7 that's coming out. It takes the easy empty bin of the V8 and sticks it on the cheaper model and has a longer battery life. Apparently, the bin on the V6 is a pain to empty! The V7 won't be as cheap as these offers obviously.

Not all the motorised heads are compatible between the different models.
Shovon
14 Apr 17 #22
According to the which report, the motorised heads don't offer that much of an improvement over the standard.... Hmmm...

Its the bin that puts me off, especially knowing they designed a better one for the V8 and now V7
dannyjones106
14 Apr 17 #23
The main motorised floor tool is wider on the v6 animal so covers a larger area. not sure if there are any other differences other than the mini turbine tool.

Mines on its way, receipt from dyson said 229.00 then total at the bottom 139.99 maybe they are clearing stock for new model.

My thoughts are after its first go it looks used so as long as its functions correctly im not too bothered about it looking perfect.

14 Apr 17 #36
I own the Which recommended Vas upright pet AC whatever it is and the Vax Carpet cleaner. Im not surprised they give a 6 year warranty as both products have broken more than 3 times each! Every time due to bad design or manufacturing. Really frustrated. Yeah they're cheap, yeah they're good when working but thats the problem, when they work!
stephenashforth
14 Apr 17 #37
I found it a little fiddly at first, but you get used to it.

At the current prices, I would go for the animal, unless you have a lot of hard floors in which case the total or fluffy models make more sense.

Dang, I just got a V6 Flexi for £200.... it had a dodgy power connector that makes the electric head spin so I got it replaced, very pleased with the V6, annoyed I could have got a refurb for £139 though!

I suspect my returned V6 will get a new cannister fitted and then put out as a refurb....it only got used for 1 day.

The Flexi V6 is £149 refurbed should you want that model.

My V6 is made in Malaysia by the way.

Bought a refurbished v6 animal earlier this year. Very pleased with it, light and easy to use for both carpet and hard floor. Find the battery lasts long enough for me. The dust container is quite small but easy enough to empty. The only thing I find is that the dust gets stuck up at the top of the container and I have to use a plastic tool to get it down.

So what? Dyson products are manufactured overseas.
With Dyson new products its often a lot more and not little bit extra.
When I was looking, a Panasonic vacuum cleaner with higher airwatts than Dyson''s offering and a 6 year warranty was less than half the price of a Dyson.

Remember, Jaguar is Indian when thinking about a car!

I will not pay more because it has a British link. The British need to compete on price, performance and warranty.
I want a long warranty and good performance. If this is Japanese or Chinese, I have no issues.

For me it was Panasonic. 6 year warranty and high airwatts and easy to use. Less than half the price of a Dyson (with lower airwatts). I could find no justification for the Dyson prices in terms of performance or warranty when I was looking for a corded vacuum cleaner. This is not to say Dyson are not good. (I did my buy my mother a Dyson when Asda sold a corded model for £100 in a stock clearance). The are just too expensive compared to the competition most of the time. That's only my view!

Well my brain dead sister has just killed ours by carrying on using it when part of the brush bar had come loose, thus managing to grind intertlocking parts nice and smooth so they no longer catch and braking something in the motor drive I assume with the initial vibrations and snagging. Oh she also brought wood potentially having wood eating critters on to the carpet over the living room wooden floor boards and left it there. And decided the single glove in the toilet (that is used to unblock toilet blockages) must be for washing the dishes ( !!! ) and put it in the kitchen with other 'dishes' stuff. No wonder her son thinks he's frikkin amazing because at 18 yrs of age he can spell Beethoven. He'll even google it for you just to prove it.

AAAAAAArgh!

So good timing for this deal.

It's much lighter than I imagined it would be. On maximum, the thing really sucks hard so the extra effort to move it about might get tiring (but it'll only last 6 minutes in Max mode anyway).

They are forced to move to places where the cost of production is much lower because of sites like this make it more competitive and harder to make a profit on something where the cost of production is high.

Thanks, just bought another one as I have been so impressed with the one I got on the £129 refurbished deal from Dyson eBay store last time. It is way better than our current Dysons. what you mean a vac that costs them about £30-50 to make and sell for £300......

bit like everything, trainers that cost £10 to make and sell for £100. Still made in sweat shops......it's called greed and profiteering. Nothing to do with production costs, Mr dyson is hardly slumming it in a mid terraced driving a Nissan Micra is he........

Doesn't mean anything these days unfortunately, as has been mentioned most of the work is outsourced abroad and probably have tax fiddles in place and the workers that are employed over here are going to have a portion of foreign workers who have moved here for work, so the 'britishness' of this and any company is very questionable these days.

I'll stick with my vax which does say 'designed in the UK's same as dyson

I tried my mother's V6 at the weekend and it seemed pretty nice, but I noticed the brush motor was labelled 50W so I assume it is a top-end model, Absolute? The suction seemed very poor when putting my hand over the tube but I didn't know there were two modes so it's probably pretty decent on the high power mode (albeit you get very little battery life).
