110v also called reduced low voltage. Its mandatory on most sites and lot of workplaces.
Yes you would need a 110v transformer.

110v is for safety reasons. The chance of shock is much lower with 110v than with mains voltage.
Remember though, Voltage jolts, current kills :/

It expects 110V 50Hz, which is what is supplied by the common yellow "tool transformers" you may have seen on building sites.
They are wired with two live conductors at 55V and 180 degrees out of phase, with a centre tapped earth. The idea is that if the cable insulation is damaged and a conductor becomes exposed and someone comes into contact with it, they only receive 55 volts rather than 240. The difference is substantial and can very easily be the difference between a rather painful jolt, and death.

A single phase site transformer will have an earthed centre tap so the highest voltage to earth you can receive as an operator is 55V.
HSE guidance still considers this to be safer than 230V protected by a Residual Current Device.

Tyranicus66
18 Apr 17#24
Correct. Voltage is basically "electrical pressure", if it cannot overcome the resistance to earth (say your work boots) you won't get a shock. The current will actually be higher in a 110v appliance of identical power (Watts) than it's 230v equivalent. Is something of a moot point though because a shock as little as 60ma can stop your heart if taken across your core...hence the insistence on 110v on site. Even 30millisec 230v jolt can finish you if your unlucky, which is why RCD protection is not all that.

18 Apr 17#25
Plenty of stolen 110v transformers at your local cash converters :smirk:
madasadog
18 Apr 172#26
That is fundamentally wrong. In fact with the way the 110V tool transformer supplies the power, you are actually twice as likely to get a shock because there are two "live" conductors rather than one. The reason why it is overall safer is because the live conductors are only at 55V (to earth) rather than 240V.
madasadog
18 Apr 17#28
It is safer, and you would normally always use an RCD with a tool transformer anyway

I'll take a Makita over a DeWalt any day of the week. I think they've gone right down the pan in the last few years, although to be fair so has much of the competition - most seem to have introduced an 'entry level' range that trades on the brand name but is built right down to a price.

Are these any good for clearing cement between bricks before repointing?
Teqnophile to patrick_000
18 Apr 17#37
If you need to grind out the existing mortar, does it really need replacing.
Bad pointing should be removed using a hand tool manually to avoid damaging the bricks.
Reprinting with a cement based mortar can do more harm than good on old houses that were originally built using a lime mortar.
Darzen to patrick_000
19 Apr 17#42
Yes, we use a 6mm diamond blade ( 2 for £15 on Amazon)
As for using hand tools to get the old mortar out, you would damage the bricks a lot more than using a blade.
