God never heard so much tripe as when a oled is on HUKD.Probably from people copy and pasting internet jargon and don't own one .Every person who sees my non 4k oled says its the best picture they have seen ,and no mention of nits either .

HDR10 is 1000 nits Dolby vision is supposed to be like 10000 nits. This tv hits around 650 but OLED tv's have a different threshold for compliance than lcds. I don't have the figures but I seem to remember OLED only has to reach 500 nits to reach the rating not 1000 like lcd.

Long story short HDR looks really nice the deep blacks make the lights seem brighter. There are better HDR tv's available though.

Edit - found the figures UHD certified
"Minimum brightness and contrast ratios: This is probably the most interesting one, as it's great for consumers and shows the different players here at work. There are two possible minimum specs. A minimum brightness of 1,000 nits, along with a black level of a maximum of 0.05 nits (20,000:1 contrast ratio), or a minimum brightness of 540 nits, along with a black level of a maximum of 0.0005 (1,080,000:1)."

I'm torn on this issue. On one hand the app says 1080P at the bottom of the screen....but it looks like 4k to me? As I understand it their bandwidth management does some weird things changing the quality on the fly as it buffers. I wonder if the Amazon app is reporting it incorrectly? It's doing HDR on things like The Grand Tour fine.
I don't possess a FireTV, but do have an Android 4k capable TV Box I'll try later.

Reading around many people are blaming Amazons bandwidth policies for intermittent 4k performance. Hopefully Amazon will release an update, I expect it's the same for all LG WebOS versions 3 above rather than TV specific so continued support should be available.

easy you say? not so easy I say.... shouldn't even be called that as its not the same problem as plasma which this will no doubt get confused with.

I can't live my life like that - no offense to you - things do go wrong from time to time, but I try not to let that have a bearing on future decisions (unless of course it'd mean repeating the same mistake) ... I totally understand where your coming from. My only thought is to go into store and buy one in there, reckon you have better recourse if something goes wrong. Don't pay via paypal like I did - they have a whole "other" process for refunds.... sigh.. going into store may cost you another £100 as you can't use the code, but i'm sure you could speak to the manager and get a full break down of what's what with the warranty before you buy, sit someone down and thrash it out. they'll spend the time if you're spending a lot of cash on a tv.

Personally I've had no problems with Currys.. I believe the knowhow warranty is not all that bad, that forum post you put up was mainly around people not seeing the warranty on the website, which was resolved. I'll log onto knowhow tonight and let you know if mine is on there. I also need to ring LG and register for the warranty also.

LG have a promo on by the way - you get a free sundbar or 4k bluray player for free when you buy an oled. - Don't miss out!

Many thanks.
Found some AV forums, 400 pages worth of reading!

On the sound I found that if I set Digital Sound Out to Auto instead of PCM then it sent Dolby out to the amp and I got 5.1. (Sony HT-AS5) I always thought PCM was better as uncompressed, but hey ho.

I do not have a Harmony and can't figure out how to see Info. Seems they removed it from the remote? Weird as it would be good to check the output of the source to know res, frame rate etc.

Amazon is fine in 4K, can't figure if it's using 10bit HDR, I think it is, but without info....

The PS4 is running with HDR, Bluray Sony S7200 looks amazing, found some great LG test files for USB, AppleTV working well, amazed how well Virgin box integrates.
Playing with the Netflix Meridian test movie.

All in all, very happy with my purchase!

Hi, I'm starting what seems to be a major learning curve having received my B this morning. 4 hours config and counting. :smirk:

How did you test to determine "banding in bright scenes?"

I'm having trouble getting 5.1 sound from my surround system from the TV. Using Port 2 with ARC, nothing out of the centre speaker. Any clues/tips?

Also managed to get HDR from Netflix, but not from Amazon?

Do you have any reference forum links you use to gather all your info? I'd really appreciate any pointers. Thanks muchly for any help

Ah this is interesting as I was all set to get the KS7000 but it was out of stock everywhere so now Ive got my eyes on this.

29 Apr 17 #165
ahhh... I would be inclined to agree with that, but not just at 55... 65 also, I did say in previous comments HD to UHD wasn't as big a leap from SD to HD. It is noticeably better though. It's besides the point, HDR content is almost exclusively shot in 4k, and try buying an up to date 1080p display with HDR10 or Dolby Vision... 4k is a non issue... is the format that is being used and having a display that takes advantage of it...

I wanted HDR... if I wanted 4k I'd have bought a 4k tv ages ago. What I really wanted was an OLED... for all the benefits it brings with it (despite the naysayers) and now I've got one, thanks to this deal. So cheers!!! I'm happy.

before anyone else decides to try and start an argument.. here's what am I..

Stupid, Clueless, too dumb to realize whatever negative thing you're about to say about this product - because I'm clueless, a tv junkie, couch potato, money waster, fool, moron for not getting something else. Silly, daft and idiotic

so whatever your about to say is pointless, because I already know.

I also know..... jealousy.

answers above.. you need to bear in mind however, your first 2 questions vary from set to set.. I've read people returning screen after screen in the "display lottery" if you've been reading my comments here's pause for thought...
my initial impressions comment mentioned that I think brightness should be a none issue.. I still think that - but there is a caveat to that... what I've noticed watching programs is that dark scenes, night time scenes are very dark.... this might seem obvious, but it gives the impression the display isn't bright.. hard to quantify actually, me and the missus sat discussing it and came to the conclusion it's because it does blacks so well that things look darker... we've had no problems watching in daytime or with the lights on at night, but it does take a little getting used to, you can't just fire up the brightness and contrast either... the flip side to that is colors and what i'm calling "gradients of light detail" are superb. You can even tell where the studio lights are in an apartment scene, shadows and such are extremely detailed.
last thing for you 1080p guys... if you have a good set already do not expect as big of a jump from SD tube TVs to HD. This is more of an enhancement than a revolutionary change. Manage your expectations I guess.
hope this helps, overall i'm really happy - but I wouldn't have paid £2500 for it. Not yet anyway - I've not run much 4k or HDR yet! My tune might change when I do
You say about it not being as big a jump as sad to HD but I tell you what the jump is bigger when you watch a 3d blu-Ray. I have the e6 and the 3d blows me away more than 4k and HDR and I loved the 3d on my old lg.
Hi mate,
1 have you found any dead pixels? - None.. at all, I did do some black grey white testing for banding and colour uniformity, I probably would have noticed a dead pixel, however - I've not checked for them specifically, right up to the screen...
2 any vertical banding especially in light scenes to complain about? - absolutely zero - I'm absolutely made up i got that lucky.
3 noises buzzing/white noise coming from onboard sound? I have a 5.1 system, so not used the tv speakers at all, even if there was a problem i'd be unlikely personally to return the screen and lose the "perfect" display. I may try this tomorrow for you if I remember.
I think I'm almost there now and looks like c6 is the way (largely down to your input) thanks so would be greatful for your patience.
answers above.. you need to bear in mind however, your first 2 questions vary from set to set.. Ok... i tried for you... if i grab it from the top, i could tip it over with one finger... grabbing it from the side if your vertically challenged like a one year old, the base is more likely to slide on the table, like you were turning the tv would be fairly difficult for a kid to push or pull it over when gripping from the side... definately not impossible... the screen does have some wobble, but it's only what I would expect from a plastic base... it's flex in the plastic.. Hard to say mate to be honest... how strong is your kid? Doing press ups?

could you not wall mount it? you can also get tv stands where the base is on the floor, at the back of the tv unit, and you screw it onto that...

I do think you could stick the base to the stand.... if you get hold of some really strong double sided sticky tape, I think that would hold up to a kid trying to pull it... for a while anyway.

Hope this helps.

Ok here's the rub on SD, i'll give you a bit of a gem of knowledge if you don't know already....

Rarely SD issues are down to the upscaling ability of the TV, it's more to do with the calibration, over contrast or brightness, artificial smoothing and motion handling, setup wrong, all these things make a poor SD image look even worse. Yes upscaling ability has some impact, but it's far less than people think, it's the calibration of the set.

Put it this way, I could make SD look horrendous on any tv if I played with the settings enough. Equally, having a balanced colour and brightness reduces the effect of the low resolution.

Start off using the calibration settings from here :
https://www.avforums.com/review/lg-c6-oled55c6v-uhd-4k-tv-review.12713

and adjust accordingly to suit your viewing needs. I used them and SD looks "fine" just really avoiding SD from now on.

I can't comment on nowtv as I've not used it, at 720p it's officially HD so I imagine you'll be ok.

Thanks for your input very much appreciated. It s funny just how many people are still concerned how TVs handle SD - me included, when you think of all the rubbish about nits etc all comes down to what is available to watch now. Can I ask do you think the SD quality is just down to the fact of upscalling to 4K - which will be the case with all TVs Oled, Qled and just plain old Led? Any comment on 720p eg Nowtv as I use this a lot?

SD - Just crap compared to HD. Not better or worse than my 7 year old sony.... edit:- ah i see the confusion sorry... nothing to do with OLED as far as I can tell, you're referring to if the OLED can upscale SD ok - in that case, yes it can, it's nothing special though - it does the job - and that's about all I can say about it.
Curved - just a joke!..... most people think it's a gimmick - you know, like 3d in many cases...
4k - Not at all, I only saw about 30 seconds worth while I was busy setting stuff up - I've got a harmony remote to reprogram! Plus all the pq settings apps and what not... didn't feel like it was my place to comment without actually seeing it...

Brightness btw... is totally fine - after using is tonight on a setting of OLED 70 (yes goes to 100) it's more than bright enough... this should not even be a topic for discussion in my opinion frankly.

26 Apr 17 #137
Thanks for the review.

SD- when you say crap, do you mean just compared to HD or actually really bad and a struggle to watch. Others on here have said the SD is fine.

Curved- Why would mates take the **** about the Curved screen? Whats so untrendy about it all of a sudden?

4K- You dont seem too wowed by it from that. I thought you would be blown away?

Ok, some quick thoughts after setting up the C6 - some people wanted some words about it so here it does..

Picture
It's great, the colours really "over pop" out of the box, but using the avforums settings really reigns that in - and makes it look more natural.
HD - better - just better than my old Full HD set - looks much sharper, just watching Sunday's top gear while writing this, looks great - the blacks do really really make the difference, add definition everywhere.

SD - looks crap, no worse than my old Sony though as far as I can tell.

The Curve - as someone who didn't want one, for me, it's genuinely almost imperceptable when watching, infact if anything I think it's growing on me, it honestly isn't a big deal... I think having to justify to your mates why you had to buy a curve when they are taking the micky out of you will cause you more trouble. hahah I'm yet to put it on a wall, i do wonder how it will look, but I'm really rather confident it'll be fine..

Other items - Firmware was the latest available, mine has a grey back on it (originally they were white I believe) I did an avforums black-grey-white test, no banding or clouding, slight change in colour on the very edge, very very very pleased overall with the screen in this regard, I suspect the grey is a later manufacturing date perhaps?

erm... still more tinkering to do, had a quick look at the grand tour on amazon for a 4k source, didn't watch enough so feel I should comment on it though - there was a bit with a yellow M4 and the rest of the image was black and white, looked very impressive.

Bad points - nothing in particular yet, getting the thing out the box was a challenge!!!

Any questions I'll try and answer. - I'll be hooking up the PS4 Pro next.

Let me say this to you.... sounds like you've already made your mind up. Look at it this way... (and this is from someone who didn't want a curve either) are you willing to give up 3D or pay £500 more just for a flat screen with a soundbar you don't want? I looked again at some reviews of the c6, the curve really is only slight. Mine has turned up now, but I can't unbox it yet, if you want I'll post back with my thoughts on the curve as I think we're in the same boat. Or look at it this way - sure the e6 is more money, but it's still one hell of a discount compared to the price when it came out, like £4000 I think. Plus it is a nicer design.

It was just an assumption to be honest as I didn't think you could generally wall mount curved screens.

Still not sure if I'm convinced on the curved screens... I would prefer flat but LG seem to have limited the options if you want 3D and flat screen (and don't want to pay several hundred pounds more for one with an integrated soundbar)

If you buy online and have it delivered you are covered by distance selling so you can return within 2 weeks for any issue which gives you time to inspect the screen. If you collect it from store this counts as buying at store even if you reserved it online.

The warranty seems to be with LG not currys.

I went into Curry's yesterday and was looking at the c3 next to a Samsung new Qled curve. They where running the same HDR stuff and not being controversial, I cannot understand this high nit thing. Human eyes just get used to brightness for example going indoors outdoors in summer. Surely it's the perceived contrast between the darkest to lightest tones that our eyes settle to. Then again some people Ike me can't stand bright summer days without sunglasses I can't see properly yet some people are quite happy being in the sun with no sunglasses. For me I could see much more detail in the Oled to the new Qled - it just looked washed out. My only problem is Curry's not sure of their customer service as always used JL in past - what if I feel there's something I don't like about the screen do they argue the toss not to replace? What is their 5 year g/t like?
hukd_addict
26 Apr 17 #122

25 Apr 17 #121
The picture on my oled is the best I've seen on a TV. Daytime, nightime, lights on or off it's an amazing picture. Balanced, loads of depth and contrast...wow the contrast on this is something else... it's actually great for viewing my photos on. If you want very bright just for brightness sake, then the oled isn't for you or others that need this extra bright image. I don't mean this in a nasty way, really i don't, but the oled would just be wasted on you.

Fair point about sitting around in a warehouse. I wish I could make my mind up whether to get the B6 or c6 - it's down to the HLG that someone mentioned would be more likely to be upgraded on the c6 because of the LG soc chip rather than the B6 Realtek chip. I think to have the opportunity to get HDR over terrestrial is my reason towards the c6. But it's not certain - gotta make my mind up soon or will lose out.
hukd_addict
25 Apr 17 #116
I know, but I don't know if they are refurbs or grey imports or what? They do stop making them after a while. I bet these have been sat in a warehouse for yonks, albeit it's still a new tv I guess. I get your point, but as I was saying to someone earlier, if your spending one thousand pounds on a TV, surely you'd want something more up to date than the 915v - just makes it a bad buy imo. Don't get me wrong, for 1080p it'll be pretty fantastic, but with HDR and the other updates to the 2016 TVs, Only £500 difference to me says get the newer one. The jump from the 915v to the b6 was far far bigger than the b6 to b7 is - if you see what I mean.

I guess to go back to my original point, they won't go lower than this while they are still "relevant" I might be wrong just thought i'd pass on my findings that's all. Riskier to wait now (and chance it going out of stock) than when it was at 1799 and above.
If one only has a budget of a MAX of £1k, which is a fair chunk of cash!!!! The samsung SUHD would be a better buy than the 915v

just a note to anyone sitting on the fence for this deal....

My personal belief after doing my research after the past 2 years, is that this TV will not drop in price by any more money, sure you'll be able to get re-furbed units on ebay and what not, but for a brand new tv this is as low as it will go. How do I know? I checked the prices on the outgoing models over the years, and watched them drop just before they went off sale, sure I can't predict the future so anything is possible, but as I said it's my judgement that tells me based on past experience, further price drops are unlikely - especially as you can get it for £1499 with the code.

I've put my money where my mouth is on this one, after 2 years of waiting, I'm retiring my Sony 55ex503 to the garage or bedroom (it's huge though!) Proper excited for the delivery tomorrow now! Hooray!

hukd_addict
25 Apr 17 1 #108
Depends on price buddy - the 910v is a 2015 set, they had quite a few issues with vignetting and crushed blacks and motion and banding, LG said they fixed it with the 2016 sets like the b6 c6 etc... reviews overall agree they fixed these problems, if the 910v is circa £700 then it's a fantastic telly for the cash, but if it's pushing £1k, I think the extra £500 is worth it, you get a lot more for not a lot extra... (all relative of course!) if you care about HDR - play safe and get the c6 if you can.

there isn't. But using my investigation hat, firmwares released for the c6 also apply to the e6 and g6 meaning for the most part, they all use the same chipset.

The b6 firmwares have what looks like the same firmware as the 2015 oleds, which won't be getting HLG.

I'm not saying the C6 will definitely get it, but if a set will miss out, I'm hedging my bets that it will be the b6 only.

25 Apr 17 #84
Yeah I reckon it will, why don't you ring a store and get them to measure the box, you can always take a tape measure with you.
hukd_addict
25 Apr 17 1 #83
actually there is... a firmware update to correct a game lag issue (and to enable game HDR mode) was released on all models except the B6 due to it having a different SoC. That update came much much later. (Several months I believe) These sets have been out for a year now, so most of the problems will have been worked out.... HOWEVER.......

A very important, critical update is yet to be released. BBC and NHK jointly created a HDR standard called Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG). This will be the ONLY way to get HDR on TV broadcasts in the future. That goes for Sky as well, LG have said at CES in January that "some" 2016 OLEDs will get the HLG update - but if there is one TV that definately won't get it, my money is on the b6 I'm afraid.

That is the only reason, after 2 years of waiting, I finally pulled the trigger and got the C6 - I don't want a curve especially, or 3D, but HLG is a must for this kind of outlay as I intend to keep the set for several years.

All this has been discussed many times on various OLED deals.

As TR7_Driver said, it's Variable Refresh Rate, which would eliminate screen tearing and improve frame rate stability for gaming. It's part of the HDMI 2.1 spec, but it's looking like it could be implemented on sets that don't conform to full 2.1 compatibility. Xbox Scorpio's going to support it.

I've not seen any of these issues, screen brightness? Do you need your rentinas burned out, sorry i don't mean to mock but i just dont know how bright you need a TV to be. I've have a very bright living room, south facing and a sunny day, no problems at all. I don't know, just baffles me.

Out of interest which LCD tv did you go for?
slannmage
23 Apr 17 #51
I have owned this, my mum has it now, I switched to LCD, oled is not the be all end all of screen tech. The problem is. Most people do not care, they see something marketed to them as the best and they believe it. However the niche audiences amoung us see the big problems with this tv.

Latency, image retention, poor brightness etc etc.

23 Apr 17 #48
A lot of stores may be struggling to hit sales targets currently. If you go in and say that you can use a code online to bring the price down £100, they wont want to lose the sale. Most of the time a manager will override the POS manually.
evangeli0n
23 Apr 17 #47
Doesn't seem to allow you to do that anymore? If you choose to collect it doesn't let you pay or enter a code. The only way to pay is if you have it delivered.

Ok, just tried that and it doesn't work.

Do they honour codes in store? I'm still on the fence about the UE65KS9000 and the OLED65C6V - tempted to go into the store and buy today but only if they apply the £100 off!

Second that went into Curry's and looked the Samsung ks7000 along side a Sony something or other and the B6 and the worst was the ks7000 looked washed out to many nits me thinking, and don't start on how they're set up in store, there all set up the same way lighting etc oh and the back was coming away from the ks7000!

Everything I've read says the B6 already supports Dolby vision - it certainly seems to be used in reviews of Dolby vision.

22 Apr 17 #32
I wasn't talking about what the TV's are capable of just what the Dolby vision standard is designed for. You can read more dolby-vision-white-paper and Dolby Vision vs HDR 10

Quote "Dolby Vision also aims to master films for 10,000 nits of brightness, which to put things in context, is vastly higher than how standard Blu-ray and broadcast television are mastered, which is just 100 nits. HDR 10, on the other hand, masters for around 1,000 nits depending on the content"

Is the Sky Q deal still active with the purchase of an LG OLED? Checking on the LG site, it would appear the deal finished 28th March but on the Very site, they still advertise it and in the other OLED thread linked too a few posts above, someone else managed to get Sky Q thrown in for free.

defard to evangeli0n
22 Apr 17 #27
I'm in a similar space myself....more likely to go Samsung myself as it has far better response time for gaming (which also translates into action / panning etc in movies) and I have read a lot of disappointing reviews of OLEDs (screen blur and burn etc)
slannmage
22 Apr 17 1 #26
700nits on 2% of the panel, 500nits 25%, 250 nits 50% and 150nits 100%, standard brightness is even lower. That's fine as you'd never want to look at a 700nits image, but oled are not the tv to buy in bright rooms.

Also the to latency sucks so it's not good for fast paced gaming, though it'll appear to be good due to the great motion handling compared to most lcds.

The other thing is screen retention.... if you plan on using it as a monitor or have static images on it.... don't.

Your text here

LCD is far brighter, the top end ones at this price can 100% at 800nits, they have great local dimming, great low latency and no burn in.

So oled isn't the best for everyone, but people are being marketed into believing so. Samsung and Sony are producing great lcds, The Sony 930e is better than this tv and it's blacks are so good thanx to the great local dimming.
nosluom
22 Apr 17 2 #25
absolutely brilliant price but am I the only one put off oled by the horrible aggressive ABL it uses? The tv's look amazing in the store when they're showing colourful patterns against a black background or dark scenes but in real life viewing when there's any form of bright picture on the screen then white's dull down to look so dull and even slightly grey. Twice i've bought an OLED now and returned it for that reason. Sky sports news is a prime example because it has a lot of white on the screen. I know oled's have amazing blacks and great viewing angles but the horrible dimming on bright images just puts me off :disappointed: 700 nits is all well and good but dimming down to 150 when there's anything bright on the screen (which lets be honest is a lot of the time in real world viewing) is terrible

But normal telly's don't have zero blacks like oleds do they? Surely it's all about perceived brightness.
FrugalFergal
22 Apr 17 3 #18
Nope. Normal tellies are about 300 nits. Dolby vision requires dynamic metadata vs HDR10 static metadata and 1000 nit of brightness. 10,000 nit full screen would be 30x brighter than your current telly, would be like staring at a 100w bulb and would probably blind you.

However I wont deny OLED is pretty. Its very much an ultra extreme 2016 technology, whereas Dolby Vision is much more future proof. Its worth keeping in mind when spending around £1500 on a telly to last you 5 or more years
afroylnt
22 Apr 17 1 #17
I would say owners of £1k+ LCD TVs most likely have a higher nit rating than owners of oled TVs...:stuck_out_tongue:
FrugalFergal
22 Apr 17 #14
I get OLED blacks are wonderful but what about peak whites? Is this Dolby vision 1000 nits compliant?
Sideeffects to FrugalFergal
22 Apr 17 4 #16
