Nothing wrong with either tech. It's all the negativity from people like you that puts off other people from purchasing and expanding the user base.

Both 3D and VR just need to naturally progress and improve over the next 10 years and they'll be exceptional experiences. But both are already perfectly enjoyable right now.

Seems like VR is to gaming what 3D is to TV. Pointless and will be dropped as a flop.

VR is great but its just too low resolution, you really need 4k per eye at 90fps and the latest games to really get immersed. Seeing as the very latest most expensive gaming graphics card cant handle a single eye at 4k/60fps, we will be waiting at least ten years until this become to the average consumer at anything near a reasonable price.

Yes it's annoying. I use the HDMI Coupler method when not using VR and quickly forget about the problems.

What a stupid oversight by Sony.

Nope, 3D TV sucked because it adds nothing to the narrative, it really couldn't have died fast enough for me.
I said that from day one, I loved being right and I love that they wasted millions on trying to push it.

On the other hand, 3D VR will be a persistent element in gaming from now on. It's not suitable for say Civ games, but for open sand box games it will be perfect.
I do think it's going to come in over several phases, right now it will run with a couple of killer games and we'll get an idea of the market.
Following from that companies are going to work out how to do visualisations of data and control processes, and then it will be a commodity business item. Imagine online shopping when you can pick up your item and look at it in 3D, or production planning with all the material and time constraints showing in real time in a 3D space.

Beyond that gamers are going to push for greater resolution, and it's here we are going to realise that the hardware demands are horrific both in display device physics and in computing power.
Eventually these will be overcome, maybe in stages, but as we approach a realistic reality then gaming is just going to transfer en-masse onto 3D (and the porn market coupled with a future AI is going to explode, and people are going to basically stop going outside)

If I'm not 100% right then I'll eat a sprout.

I find it very strange that they don't just duplicate the image over, rather than rendering two separate images...it would be much less taxing on the CPU, and we could all be enjoying much better graphics too.
Denziloshamen to dijital
2 Apr 17 1 #20
Not true at all. Immersion has nothing to do with resolution. PSVR games are certainly low resolution, but the likes of Kitchen, Rush of Blood and Resident Evil 7 prove immersion is fully creatable with the tech available. Sure, it would be even better if it was high res, but not essential for immersion.

always seemed extremely likely. accessories like this are ALWAYS poorly supported. Why design a game for the tiny amount of people who own one when you could build for a console thats popular?

One problem with this Glorified Electric Hat *tm* is that it doesn't come with those glow-in-the-dark maracas type things, that people use as controllers (perfect for an ice cream simulator). You gotta pay more for the cyber-maracas. Next they'll be fitting folk for robo-boots.

No need, you just need an hdmi splitter and an hdmi switch.

Split the hdmi signal that comes from the PS4, before it goes in to the PSVR and send one hdmi to the hdmi switch at the tv end, then send the other to the PSVR. Then take the output from the PSVR and put that in the second input on the hdmi switch and connect the switch to your tv. Now, when you want to play HDR games then you can bypass the PSVR box completely by viewing through input 1 on the hdmi switch, when you use the PSVR you can flick to input two.

Admittedly, it's a bit of a faff and you need to get a splitter and switch that supports 4K HDR (and 3D if you also have a 3D TV), but it's a workaround you can do for around £20 or less.

VR is true 3D, so it needs two separate images to be rendered. It would just be flat 360 video otherwise and that would suck.

Had a go for the first time the other day, I can see that VR is definitely the future, but just look how few big games are available on all of the high end VR devices. The likes of EA, Take Two, Ubisoft etc aren't designing any AAA titles yet. I agree that it is really to test consumer interest at this point, like the original eye toy for PS2 did for motion gaming.

There are worse ways of spending £300+, it is quite interesting and fun, but if you don't have much money then I wouldn't bother. Lower tech VR will probably get big first in the next 5 years on smartphones, tablets and possibly the Nintendo Switch. High end VR like Vive, Oculus Rift, PSVR, Hololens will be big in 10 years. The possibilities are amazing, imagine starring in your favorite movies as the character themselves, it will be fantastic eventually.
Though I do worry about the Psychological consequences, especially combining VR, Mixed VR, Augmented Geo Location Reality and social media...

2 Apr 17 #36
Cheers. I believe to complete your setup, you'd need to make sure the VR box is completely OFF...as if it is powered, the PS4 knows and still downgrades the signal, regardless of whether your on input 1 or not? But yes, not a huge deal...put the VR in a switched socket or better, on a remote clicker.

Not sure about a HDR 4K Switch and Splitter though for £20...can you recommend any? Ones that are confirmed to work seem much more expensive.

2 Apr 17 #39
Can you link me to a switch that does 4k HDCP 2.2 (needed for HDR)? All the ones that claim they do 4k do this at HDCP 1.4 which is exactly what PSVR does....

I've tried about 3 switches
Themadcow

Not to mention the tech being developed that tracks your eye movement and only optimises resolution in the part of the screen you're focusing on. It's a bit like in the new AMD graphics chips where 3D objects hidden behind other 3D objects don't get rendered, thereby saving the GPU for visible objects only.

Anyone tried watching films on their VR headset? I'm terrible watching films at home, I'm always checking my phone and being distracted, but I feel like if I had some kind of VR headset I'd be more focused and 'immersed'. I'm fine watching films in the cinema afterall.
Si__ to 7percent
3 Apr 17 1 #47
It's nice then, then that you can go watch your films in a VR cinema theatre. Plenty of VR apps for it, and the movies play in 3D too (if it's a 3D movie of course). Beet part, you don't even have to have a regular cinema scene, you can be sitting in a car lot, or floating out at sea, or watching it on the moon.

like every bit of tech these days i'm waiting for a rev.2 update, most reviews cite the camera (and move motion tracking, though that's more optional) as the main problems.

shame, with the low stock due to component shortages that won;t happen soon...

Don't forget that you can use the Trinus driver to use the PSVR on the PC to play Steam VR games too. Cheap headset if you use it for nothing more than PC gaming.

However, do remember that Microsoft's OEMs are ready to launch their $300 usd mixed reality VR headsets after the Windows 10 creators update comes (due 11th April).

In your opinion

If you didn't like it then fine, just don't buy any 3D films. Problem solved. I don't get why you have to be such a massive **** about it when there are people that DO enjoy 3D films. What harm does it do you if other people have a different opinion?

3 Apr 17 #56
Only if we disagree on what the word 'narrative' means in filming?

Having a shark burst out of the screen is just a tacky visual gag, what purportedly would add to a sense of immersion just had the opposite effect.

Because it wastes development funding for something that may actually be relevant, like 4K and wider colour range,
although at least for the future of VR we now know what doesn't work.

3D was just a technology led idea, nobody asked for it, they just decided to force it on the marketplace.
Imagine if the stupid idea actually took hold, we would have generations of films ruined because directors would contrive to have certain scenes designed for 3D, which would then look retarded when shown in 2D.

Course it is.

Obviously the PS4 Pro is more powerful so you will get better visuals.

The difference on PS Pro is negligible by all accounts. If running PSVR on a standard PS4, you will get pretty much the exact same experience as PS Pro owners. I'm running my PSVR on a launch day PS4 and it runs perfectly.

ChrisIW
3 Apr 17 #63
But for me 4k is a waste of "development funding" as I have no interest in 4k releases. But then you seem to have no concept of other people having their own tastes and opinions so I guess Sony should get in touch with you when they release a new format.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/ps4-pro-vs-ps4

"IS THE PS4 PRO BETTER FOR PLAYSTATION VR?
Not conclusively. Games won’t be any smoother in VR on the PS4 Pro compared to the PS4. And while a few add visual upgrades, there aren’t enough examples to justify the extra expense. The difference could become more significant in future, however."
Denziloshamen
3 Apr 17 #65
Are you posting that to agree with me or disagree with me? That link says pretty much what I already said. In the future, all VR games are likely to look better as the developers learn the tricks for it, so although the 'in the future' comment might well be true I think the difference for VR on Pro and Standard will continue to be negligible. Both consoles only have the limit of the PSVR hardware to play with so the hardware will have to change for any future improvements to make a substantial difference. PSVR was developed purely to run of standard PS4 first and foremost and has to run perfectly on that as a minimum requirement. That's why there is little difference and there is no need to upgrade to a PS Pro if you want PSVR and already have a PS4. If you're just jumping on the PS4 platform then sure, get a Pro and PSVR as you might as well start with the better console.
horsey
4 Apr 17 #66
Well you were happy to go from 625 lines to 1080p? 4K is also noticeably better.
Nobody is going to sit there and decide that because 1080p is acceptable, that we should just stay there.

Don't worry, they haven't released smelly vision in the UK yet, so more cheap sensory gags await your viewing pleasure.

Yes indeed, if Sony consulted with me first then I could have saved them millions over MiniDisc too.

4 Apr 17 #67
Yes, I agree. Just adding to your reply.

Just got it. Tried to setup without the ps camera but it doesn't seem possible. Anyone knows how to setup in cinematic mode and work around the ps camera requirement?
Denziloshamen to txugo
5 Apr 17 #69
Are you serious? No camera no PSVR!! Sure, cinematic mode doesn't need the camera to work once the PSVR is set up, but you're going to need the camera for the initial set up process and to play the VR games (plenty of demos and stuff for free to experience on the store).

You're going to have to buy the camera or return the PSVR.
