I think it boils down to if you want a mower that hovers, or if you want one with wheels.

Hover mowers are supposed to glide over the lawn on a cushion of air, but I have no experience of them so couldn't comment on if this is the case!
Wheeled mowers with rear rollers should give you stripes if that's something you're worried about - or not.

Me though, I'm sad to say that I chose purely on brand name... I have other bosch stuff, it works well; I'm hoping the mower does to. I also chose a bit based on what I read over on fred sheds site (Oh... what he describes as the 32R I believe is pretty much the same as the 320 ER, except I think that's just a B&Q exclusive name)

The 32cm mower is 6.6kg so it's a lot lighter than the 34cm one which is 10.5kg but it lacks quite a few features that the 34cm one had - I just see that as less to go wrong :wink:
34cm had ergo handles, 5 different cutting heights (20cm to 70cm) and a height adjustment lever, a bigger cutting width and a 40 litre box, it also looks to fold down neater, suggests suitable for gardens up to 300m2 (A tennis court)
32cm is just a basic lawnmower, 3 different cutting heights (20cm to 60cm) adjustable when the mower is off but fiddling with the wheels and springs (nothing fancy) - yeah, it's just your run of the mill lawnmower it would seem... suggest suitable for gardens up to 150m2 (half a tennis court)

Anyone with experience of Flymo, what's your take?

Beware: not all Bosch mowers are equal! I know this seems like a great deal but read on:

I had fantastic experience with a similar but larger Bosch mower for many years - by far the best mower I ever had (came to hate previous Flymo which wouldn't pick up all the grass) and recommended to many. Last year I saw a terrific B&Q deal for a later model Bosch and thought it was a good opportunity to 'upgrade'; sold the old one easily on ebay. What a mistake! New one was less powerful, flimsy, left grass clippings in lumps and just didn't perform like the old one, even on dry grass. Shorter lead too.

Bosch didn't want to know (surprisingly poor customer service from a respected brand) but, fortunately, Homebase (pre-Bunnings) took it back.

Subsequently learned that these Chinese made Bosch machines are made down to a price for the DIY sheds and those in the know will advise against. Decent ones (UK made I think) are still available but will cost more. You can identify them by the black cover over the motor.

Bought one of the good ones second hand and I'm delighted with it. Back to an easy cut, picks up all the clippings and leaves lovely stripes in the lawn. I'd almost say cutting the lawn is a pleasure!

quick next day delivery. but not really happy with this mower. may be because I am first time mowing in life. few things
1. grass flow through tunnel shape to the box. it happened 2-3 times that it got jammed and mower was making weird sound. and no grass in the box and wasn't cutting much. took time to realise.
2. was using extension cable reel. cables were coming in way quite often.
3. very tiring..may be because needs some force to push.
4. cuts small patch of approx max 10 inches at a time. sometimes clean sometimes middle portion was left out.
if given a second chance I would buy petrol one.

Anyone know what the Mac Allister 1200w for £50 (£40 with code) is like for use/reliability. Has 2 year guarantee. Also 1 step height adjust. Also preferred the handle.

Received the mower and trimmer today.. it is the first time i own a mower so hard for me to tell if it is good or not.

One thing for sure, the trimmer appears to be 2nd hand, as it has clear scratch marks out of the box..

Tried to buy this yesterday but got an error at the payment screen 4 times! Tried this morning and transactions went through successfully :smiley:

The 32cm bosch is also like this, there is a metal axle attached to springs and then you have to walk each foot up the rungs. I don't see this as a problem as I typically pick a longer length and cut to that - the wee beasties prefer longer grass, they're more important than peoples perception of how tidy my lawn is.

Bosch are much easier to adjust the cutting level, its at the sides. Flymo its underneath and you need to be able to pull the metal bar on the springs and adjust into place. not that easy

How is the Bosch mower + strimmer deal compared to Flymo ?

I'm totally new to buying mower & recently moved into my place which needs mowing so curious to know which/how to pick ?

China or Germany it doesn't make much difference anymore. The saving is on the Labour and energy costs. Having sold mowers in the past there's a difference in the petrol mowers, particularly in returns - definitely go for the briggs and strattons etc, plastic or metal deck. Or... a £20 wilko mower! which has cut our mossy, overgrown at times large(ish) lawns without fail. Admittedly the basket needs to be emptied every 10 feet and 'Wilko' written on the side in very big letters shouts 'el cheapo!' but meh, does the job.

This lawn mower lacks power since it became Chinese built. If you have long grass it will struggle and clogs up easily. I bought one from Homebase on a deal hoping it was a German one before it changed to Chinese built but "made in China" was on the box and then I knew what to expect.

We've had our Bosch for 18 months and it is now kaput. Ordered spare parts but it does not seem to be repairable. Don't think I'd give another one from Biosch a go.

Got mine this afternoon and can confirm it is made in China. All in all I am quite happy from the way it works ... was struggling a little bit but I am sure it was because the grass was long and wet.

So the Bosch Rotak 320ER sold by B&Q must be made in China and the Rotak 32-12 sold by Homebase for £75 must be made in the UK? Can anyone confirm this?

I've used this mower for about the last 6 years and I'd heartily recommend it. Solidly built, no problems so far and at 6.6kg it's light enough to pick up and move around easily. I think I paid about this price, so considering inflation and Brexit related price rises, this is a very hot deal.

Just bought the 34cm Bosch version from Amazon and had to return it. Terrible quality. Parts didn't fit together well. Sent it back. Might be reason for recent discounts.

I prefer the Bosch to a Flymo, but use both (Flymo at my Mothers).
If buying a Flymo, buy a decent level one with a solid metal blade. The small plastic bladed ones are garbage and frustrating.
