Didn't know you could go up to 128gb in the SD slot, that's a decent size. Can you go higher than that ? And does it perform ok and seem safe in there , that seems such a huge size for a tiny little space I would be worried of it burning out

Hard drive size doesn't bother me hugely, I've got a 128gb sd card permanently in the laptop in a low profile sd card holder. Is that not an option for you?

I bought one of these too, picked it up from collect+ shop really late as I have been away and now deciding whether to keep it or not as I still am under the 30 days for return.

Whats the general concensus? Is it a decent machine for the money?
I definately need to upgrade the SSD as I need a 500gb so as to not have to mess around with sd cards and external HDD's. I see it takes a m.2 SSD which I am not familiar with, and you have to be careful as its quite a particular one, a 500gb is about £150...

Would fiting one void the warranty? And would a 500gb tiny little ssd in this compact laptop not cause any heat issues?

Any other feedback on it would be greatly appreciated and would help me decide whether its a keeper or if I should wait for something else to come along at this price with these specs.

Also can someone link me to the right kind of m.2 sdd, will this samsung fit:

Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone is sharing the same experience i am.

Got this laptop a month ago, overall very happy with it. Unfortunately it keeps freezing every so often. The whole computer locks for about 30 seconds, can't do anything including open task manager. Then after that 30 seconds it all comes back and all the clicks and actions i did whilst it was locked are performed.

Anyone know what could cause this and how to fix it? Seems strange on such a well specd laptop when all i am doing is browsing.

Thanks in advance.

This laptop doesn't come with asus smart gestures, you can try the windows 10 creators update, which gives a lot more settings for the trackpad , change the delay to no delay, and it'll feel much nicer, for me, this trackpad is one of the nicest I have used, albeit a tiny bit too smoothe

@prayank7679 thanks dude. Been having a play around with those settings and it feels a bit better. I still think it feels a little off though when doing a quick tap on the touchpad to open programs etc. Something just seems a little off since this update. I could have sworn there used to be a taskbar icon for Asus settings for the touchpad. But I'm not sure if I'm thinking of my old Asus that this replaced or not!

Hi there, this model is UX360UA as mentioned in the title. Also, even I noticed the touchpad behave a bit differently. What did the trick for me was that I went in settings of Touchpad and there is an option to shorten the delay of Touchpad if pressed accidentally when typing. I changed that from 'Medium Delay' to 'Short Delay' and it worked for me.

See of that makes any difference to you.

I hope some of you are still checking this thread? I have another question please. Since the latest update my touchpad feels different. I notice going into settings that the touchpad seems to be listed as a generic MS touchpad. There is no mention of the Asus drivers at all. But looking on Asus website there are two models listed for this laptop. The UX360UA and the UX360UAK.....I have no idea which one this is and the help link there is no use whatsoever!

The drivers listed for either of those are different as well. I'm not sure if I can somehow just have a nosy on this laptop and find the Asus drivers again? Thanks for any help chaps

Whilst we're on the subject, the bios is pretty barebones (Hold F2 during boot). One of the few things you can change is the pre-allocated RAM for the gpu (Intel DVMT).

Although the advice online is to leave it as low as possible I have increased it to 256mb (max: 512).
I was seeing occasional black frames and this seems to have fixed it. My suspicion is that this was occurring when the onboard graphics demanded more memory, perhaps due to the high resolution screen on this particular model. The only side effect is a slight reduction in the total RAM pool. Welcome any thoughts.

I will remember that for my 300Flip. I sold the chi as I prefer the flip type of 2 in 1. Transition to windows 10 was quite straightforward and just looking for a decent 256gb ssd. When I find that it will get a clean install of windows. Will see how that works compared to Lenovo as when I did a clean install on that I lost the uefi boot. Didn't really matter but trying to access the bios can sometimes be a bit hit and miss and being able to do that from within windows was quite handy.

I had similar problems with my t300 chi, i believe it was the transition from Windows to Windows 10 that messed up certain drivers an required re-instaling drivers (frequently). I reset it to factory default without going back to Windows 8, and now the machine is better than the first day I had it, gestures and the touch screen works much better, without needing to install extra drivers, i recommend giving that a go if you're having issues

10 May 17 #248
You have it sorted now which is the main. I thought long and hard about buying this but I had just bought the TP300. Second hand yes but in very good condition. I upgraded it to windows 10 as soon as I got it I didn't have gesture either. Being a mac user the two finger scroll is quite important to me but after downloading and installing all the drivers for mine for windows 10 everything worked without issue. I did have a similar problem with my T300chi though and found that occasionally gesture wouldn't work at all and I had to uninstall and re-install. It could be a bug with either Asus or windows 10 or both and I haven't had my TP300 long enough yet to find out. Good luck.

and you could have tried what I suggested. As I said the ATK package is the same for your model as mine. As Mbeeching said the Smart Gesture driver is not shown on the Asus website for your model for some reason. You could have tried the one for mine which is an older version of the laptop you bought. You will not do any harm installing software for hardware you don't have.

The ATK driver for your model is the same version as mine. It's worth a try.

Was Smart Gestures installed by default? (I removed or disabled most of the pre-installed software and don't remember seeing it). I couldn't find the software on the official support page for this laptop so I downloaded it from here instead (x64 version): https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1009613

When I rebooted it didn't launch any new programs or add anything to the start menu so I had a poke around the installation folder. I eventually tracked this file down and ran it: Program Files (x86) / ASUS / ASUS Smart Gesture / AsTPCenter / x64 / AsusTPConfigure64.exe

It seems to work okay.

Just installed this program and highly recommend it, the default fan profile is painfully safe.
During general usage the cores hover around 30°, as soon as it goes one degree over the fan kicks in.

Hi, sorry for the slow reply. For me I think the surface pro screen is more vibrant, with better colour reproduction. There is a certain clarity to it that I can't quite explain. Don't get me wrong, I think this Asus is a great machine and the screen is really very nice, and I think your average pc buyer wouldn't notice much of a difference at all.

Have a read of this article. It is a couple of years old but they go into a lot of detail about the surface screen. Plus the surface works really nicely with the pen if you have any need for that

http://gizmodo.com/the-surface-pro-4-has-the-most-accurate-tablet-display-1738801322

P.s there is of course the not insignififcant point that I paid more than twice as much (I got the i7 SP4) for my Surface than I did for this laptop. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this laptop at all at this price. But I do a fair bit of artwork which is why I have the surface pro.

If you can open up the smart gesture programme make sure you haven't got an increased scaling factor set up i.e. 125%, 150% because you need to click apply at the bottom and if the scale is too large you can't see the box. Least that's how it was on my chi. Took me a while to suss it.

I don't have this model but will check on my TP300 if you don't find the solution.

Hi there,
I need to make a decision between this and Surface Pro 4 myself. Can you advise if the screen difference is too significant ? ie what in the display of Surface Pro 4 you like more whether it's brightness, colour accuracy or touch sensitivity.

Your response will help me with my decision. Thank you.

So far the only thing which has minimised the issue is reducing contrast to 46 in the Intel Control Panel.
If you're scrolling through a web page and a red object appears it still shifts slightly.

The Wi-Fi has been driving me crazy, the connection was dropping during dowloads. Think I've finally solved it:
Device Manager > Network adapters > AC 7265 > Properties > Advanced > HT Mode: 'disabled'.
Clydey10
7 May 17 1 #226
I Have tried all sorts to try and resolve the issue. It appears that the screen might be doing some sort of dynamic contrast. I have found a similar problem here: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?38038-Autobrightness-based-on-lightness-of-items-on-screen although this appears to suggest that it can be disabled using the nvidia control panel, although that wouldn't be possible in this case as the laptop contains intel graphics not nvidia.

4 May 17 #225
Funnily enough I do notice subtle tone variations even though I've disabled adaptive brightness.
I have found a way to reproduce my issue: Go to Windows settings / maximise window / move cursor to the top right. The screen clearly changes to a slightly warmer tone. I'm convinced there's another background process which is affecting the display.

One of the first things I do on laptops is to switch this off.

Right click your battery icon in the toolbar, power options, then a new window will open, choose whichever power plan you want to change it for, click on the 'Change plan settings' > 'Change advanced power settings', another window will open, scroll down to 'Display', tap on the + to expand the list, then expand for 'Enable adaptive brightness', and change it to the settings you want to for when on battery and when on charge, and remember to apply the settings.

I'd like to pick people's brains again as well please! This is the first laptop I have owned where you can't remove the battery. I usually have my laptops on 24/7 so in the past have just had them on the mains and taken the battery out.

Is it normal on the mains, for it to charge to 100% then say 'plugged in, not charging' but see a small drop in the battery charge? It seems that even when running off the mains, after 24 hours or so, the battery will have dropped to around 98%. It stays 'not charging' and if I then run it off the battery it will discharge under normal usage and charge back up to 100% again. Just seems like odd behaviour.

Other than that the battery is indeed lasting quite an impressively long time.

@Clydey 10 unlike on my surface pro 4 that has an obvious adaptive brightness button in settings, on this machine you have to delve right in to the advanced settings to switch the adaptive brightness off, which I think is what you are seeing. You'll have to google just where that setting is as I'm not much good at describing how to do things like that!
Clydey10
3 May 17 #221
Has anyone noticed any issues with screen brightness/contrast? Mine seems to auto adjust itself depending upon screen content such as black text on white background then changing to coloured text.
It would be great if people can confirm if they have this issue as i'm not sure if it is by design or a fault.
Thanks

I'm the OP for the 'Pi Drive' link, I spent quite a while googling other solutions of which there were loads, but they either were still too long at around 24/25mm or looked too fat or flimsy. In the end I went for the 'Pi Drive' as other reviewers had specifically said it fits perfectly for the Zenbook. To be honest I couldn't be bothered trying things that may or may not work so ordered the 'Pi Drive' which fits perfectly. If someone can find another that proves to fit as well and is cheaper then great.

This isn't the same size as the original item posted on here, it won't sit flush in the laptop, the one around ~£12 is about half the size of the card your quoting

Edit: I don't think this would fit, looks like it's too tall to fit into the laptop

I tend to use keyboard shortcuts to quickly adjust the page size:
Ctrl / + = zoom in
Ctrl / - = zoom out
Ctrl / 0 = reset

The browser should remember which zoom level you've used for each page.
You can also pinch zoom using the trackpad, I have it disabled though as I tend to trigger it accidentally :disappointed:

In addition to duckative's reply if you download google chrome, in settings at the top right of the web page, that's the 3 little dots at the top right, you can set a zoom factor. 110% on my macbook pro 17". I expect it's higher on my TP300 flip but will check. Sometimes a higher resolution screen is nice but for us older guys the text is too small, especially windows title menus.

If texts are too small, you can change the scaling by right clicking on your desktop, display settings, and then change the scaling to suit, mines at 175% and i think that's just about right for me

Thanks so much for that Pi Drive suggestion. It is expensive for what it is, but invaluable for adding some quick extra space as it fits so snuggly I don't have any qualms about leaving it plugged in. Putting the sd card into it was a tight fit! but now it just sits flush in the laptop

Thanks also to everyone who has suggested ways to clear HDD space - really appreciated.

One things, it seems to have a very similar resolution to my Surface Pro 4, but despite the SP4 having a smaller screen, it seems to fit more on it when browsing the web? I'm sure that web pages seem to have smaller text on that and the firefox tabs etc seem smaller?

I'm new to Windows 10 and wondered what I need to do to kind of make them look similar on screen.....if that makes any sense? Thanks

Her's a quote from Techradar regardig my laptop, Asus TP300L Flip.

The FlipLock software isn't reliable – it stopped working on both machines we tested (the first was returned due to a hard drive fault). Without the software the machine loses its unique flipping ability. If Asus can make the FlipLock software more reliable, then it would make the TP300LA far more enticing.

Looks like Asus haven't perfected it yet if some of you have issues. On mine it sometimes doesn't re-enable the keyboard and trackpad when folding the screen back from tablet to laptop format. I have sort of found what appears to be a temporary solution. I have fliplock turned off so that each time I fold the screen back I get a message pop up which says do I want tablet mode and vice versa, so I have to tell it yes or no. This way it works ok but really defeats the object of fliplock.

The functionality seems okay though fairly hefty for a tablet.
What are your Win 10 tablet settings? Mine's set to ask before switching modes.

I've updated three Intel drivers so far: GPU, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Had to manually install the GPU update as it's not Asus approved.

Yes, have the same problem, it kicks in (deactivates keyboard and touchpad) when held in 'tablet' mode at exactly 90 degrees, but then if it's angled at 90 degrees or more, it kicks back to desktop mode, in which case the keyboard and touchpad activates again, there's a new update on their website, but i've installed it, but doesn't seem to work at all, so had to revert back to their previous version using the asus installer, i've also found that installing drivers through their asus installer to be much more effective than manually installing from their drivers page, which is annoying since their asus installer doesn't provide the newest updates. I installed all windows 10 updates and also manually installed windows 10 creators update to see if anything solves the issue, for now, i've given up on the use in tablet mode

Anyone run into any issues with the FlipLock functionality? It's Asus' tool to lock the keyboard and trackpad whilst in tablet mode, but there seems to be some compatibility issues with Windows 10.

How are people finding it in tablet mode generally?

I also use CCleaner for most duties but you can clear a tonne of stuff using Windows itself.
Right click on drive > Properties > Disk Clean-up > Clean up system files.

Tried a few games:
Pinball FX2 - Excellent performance at native resolution in landscape and portrait mode. Supports touch controls.
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 - Runs great at 1600x900 at maximum settings
Rocket League - Plays okay at 1600x900. Render quality set to high, all other settings low or off.

Recommend trying 1600x900 for most games as it scales well (1/4 native).
All games tested using Win 10 Creators gaming mode with Intel driver set to max performance.

You might have to format your usb drive to a different format. I can't remember which one it has to be, either FAT32 or NTFS. It's one or the other. Then it should work.I did my asus t300chi no probs. Not sure why in other it shows 13gb but only 1.5gb in there. You can tell it to get rid of the old version of windows as well. Check what you want to delete from the temporary folder. Ccleaner will empty what is in there if you have it. Re-boot after that's done and then check your free space.
Smartguy1
28 Apr 17 #189
Yes but sometimes you have to force removal of files that ccleaner doesn't remove, i.e. windows updates which includes new operating versions of windows 10 which can run to quite a high number of gb. For example when windows 10 initially launched my Lenovo failed 3 times doing the download. It was only a small 32gb machine and ended up having less than 5gb of free space due to the aborted downloads. CCleaner didn't help so I just removed the files manually which gave me my normal 16 gb of free space. I know the reason why he has so little free space and gave him the solution.

Ccleaner is a good tool, I have it. It just doesn't do everything.
superted2008
28 Apr 17 #188
I don't think the question asked was how to remove specific files. The question asked was how to free up space which ccleaner does.

Retrovertigo
28 Apr 17 #187
@smartguy cheers for that. Looking in storage, it lists "other" and that as using 13 gb, but when you click on it, it only shows around 1.5gb of stuff in there?

I see that the older version of windows does indeed take up a chunk of change at this point.

Also, had anybody managed to create a recovery drive? I can't get it to work as it simply won't recognise any usb sticks that I try. They all work fine on the laptop, it sees them ok, other than the recovery app, which won't see them at all. Google suggests I'm not alone and this is an issue people have been having in earlier windows versions as well. Cheers
Smartguy1
28 Apr 17 #186
I think you may find that CCleaner doesn't remove files downloaded from Microsoft for windows updates and if there are any issues in downloading or installing updates then it downloads them again. Far easier just to remove them manually.
superted2008

Just make sure you are in the correct folder when you press delete.

Empty the recycle bin

Then click on

To see what else you have that you don't need. There is more than likely some older version of windows 10 that can be deleted. I am trying to remember where that is in windows 10 as I use 7 most of the day when at work.

On the Asus 128gb SSD you should have about 95gb of space after you have cleared everything out. I put a clean install on my T300chi which removes the recovery space so ended up having quite a bit more. I don't have it anymore so can't tell you exactly.

First impressions are pretty good. The chassis is high quality and no issues with the hinge, though I doubt I will use the flip/tablet functionality. Installed two major OS updates which was a waste of time as I have go through it all again to get on to Creators. Got around 90gb of free drive space after removing some of the junk (the Asus driver folder is almost 2gb so I might back them up elsewhere).

I can sense a slight static charge on the left hand side of the trackpad, it's very subtle but almost feels haptic.
It only seems to occur when the laptop is charging and not a major concern but I would interested to know if anyone else has noticed it?

Happy for the price and will spend more time using it over the Bank Holiday weekend.

I left a post on the other Asus Zenbook Flip regarding the amount of pixels on a screen this size. Anything above 188 pixels per inch cannot be detected by the human eye allegedly. Therefore the screen would appear only marginally better than the FHD version. Saying that I had a Lenovo 10.1" laptop with 1920 x 1200 resolution and I also had the Asus T300chi with 12.5" screen at 1920 x 1080 screen. Lenovo's was better in my opinion. Detachable 2 in 1's are so frustrating, like they can't make their mind up what they are supposed to be. Tried two and will not be buying another. I have a TP300 flip now.

Now if you ask me it its a good thing to have 3K+ pre approved credit, and hang on this site is a different story. If you have low self control it can be dangerous :P

On paper the Yoga appears better spec. For gaming you typically ALWAYS want dedicated graphics and not chipset like on this Asus. Honestly i think for the price here its mainly for the 2-in-1 feature with touchscreen and all the nice gimicky stuff that for gaming you could put the money towards better hardware like a better cpu or dedicated gpu.

Something i learnt with PC gaming if you want a nice smooth good quality system you need to pay that extra price, working retail too many times i have seen customers "cheap" out on a <£500 laptop and then come back upset it can't run skyrim at Medium+ settings. Thats why i always do PC upgrades in one big swoop, i would rather save twice as much for longer and get a top of the range system i won't feel like needs upgrading, nothing worse than spending a load of money on something and not being able to use it how you intended.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/USB-Flash-Drives/SanDisk-SDCZ43-128G-GAM46-Ultra-Fit-128-GB-150MB/B01BGTG2A0/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1493191570&sr=1-1&keywords=ultra+fit+128gb

Not sure what to make of this but from this review :
http://www.ultrabookreview.com/11810-asus-zenbook-ux360ua/

- "Asus uses an M.2 80mm SSD with a B-M key on this laptop, that only supports SATA 3 speeds. However, as noticeable in the pictures, the SSD connector on the motherboard uses an M-key and thus faster PCIe SSDs are theoretically compatible as well."

Could anyone open up their Flip and have a look inside to confirm what type of SSD it has? This video suggests the older version uses SATA M2.2280 drive which isn't NMVe compatible, but I can't find any information on this newer model.

Just wanting to order the right type of SSD first time. Many thanks

Many thanks OP. Heat added. Been looking at laptops for a while now as my little Asus EEE1000 was getting more than a little long in the tooth. This falls right into my price range and is by far the best spec I have seen for the price. Also got a £40 voucher so really chuffed  Looking forward to it arriving.

Worth about £6.90 or £13.80 in Sainsburys double up. Probably better than Quidco/TCB because they are not a good payer and tend to decline cashback with these sites.

I wonder if AO are on the bank debit card cashback like Nationwide/Santander /Lloyds etc.

No, not at all. I'm more interested in the facts and having threads with accurate information that are useful to people, and you seem to be right on this point! TBH, I had a look at a couple more reviews as well since your post and they also mention improved hinge stiffness on the UA compared to the wobblier hinges on the earlier Zenbooks.

If anyone wants a £40.00 code email me.

UA has a better redesigned hinge you can see in the review I added. I'm using the laptop now so I know.
Picard123

They both use the same chassis and screen hinges.

The only differences are the CPU and choice of LCD panel (which has no effect on the hinge mechanism).

The UA - has better hinges (no wobble at all) and the keyboard seems solid to me.

I too bought this for £539 last week, managed to get £50.10 refund just now, very happy, thanks OP.

As others had said the laptop is fantastic, I have a HP Spectre 360 for work and can't really see any discernible difference between the two.

As for the fan noise, it was very loud and on most of the time, after googling I installed NoteBookFanControl.1.5.0 which sorted it right out, given what I use it for I don't think I'll ever hear the fan again.

I have been testing it. ON 50% brightness which is good indoors, I get about 9hrs watching video and with the Wi-Fi on. That's pretty good considering. With blu tooth it drains more. I would say at least 8-10hrs depending on what you do. (settings etc, save energy and so on).

Hmm, i5-6200U, 8GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, 3200x1800 display. I'm not sure how they justified the £800 original price, heck my Dell XPS 13 cost less, came with a bigger SSD and a bunch of quality of life stuff like a backlit keyboard and TB3.

At £500 I can't argue though.
