Ok, this is likely to cold due to the cost for an ipad, but it is the large screen pro with 256gb of memory. Same model being sold at John Lewis for £909 and refurbised by Apple at £679.

It is good for a lot of people but definitely not for 99% of actual work.

Could be a sign of a new version coming soon...

That wasn't a bad deal either.
Iirc, I paid £799 for the 128gb iPad Pro last year in JL. At least I was able to get a three year warranty with it, so it wasn't all bad.

I cant see Allen Bradley/Siemens/Omron/Schneider/Mitsubishi/GE releasing tools on one of these to do PLC programming or firmware flashing, then again - would you really be wanting to use an iPad to do those sort of tasks?
Maybe using Structured Text / Instruction List it would be fine, not sure about ladder, FBD or SFC
But... these are very niche applications that 99.9% of people wont be using.
iPads can be used for photoshopping rather well, and can carry out some diagnostic work that doesnt involve RS232/RS485 (actually - with some clever trickery you might be able to with a Bluetooth/Wifi-RS232 converter)
For 99% of work these are just fine. For the other 1%, use a laptop.

I don't quite agree because it all depends on how you're working or trying to work.
While it's true that you generally can't work with these by themselves in the same manner as you could with a traditional laptop, apps are maturing and have matured to the extent that if you change how you're trying to work or your perceptions/expectations, you can be very productive with an iPad or Android tablet.
Personally, I prefer traditional laptop-style machines because I prefer a laptop keyboard and traditional applications but I'm seeing more and more clients giving their users the choice of tablets over laptops with the increased use (or expected use) of cloud services.
If you're on a long train/plane journey or continually on the go and you don't have an ultralight laptop with excellent battery life, you'll probably have to limit the amount of work you do until you can plug it into an outlet whereas with a tablet, you're more likely to have better battery life at the same or even lower price point. Plus, if you need to use a portable charger to recharge the device, there are many more affordable, practical and lighter options available for tablets due to their lower power requirements. Portable chargers for laptops can be expensive and heavy.
How many people actually need to do those things on the go? The use case is small relative to the vast numbers of people that do other "proper work", you know, like marketing, sales, customer service, technical support, business strategy, project management, event planning, medicine, law, research, just to name a few.
A couple years ago, I was told about an architectural firm that had distributed iPads to their team and simply use their server infrastructure, both on premises and in the cloud to handle most of the intensive backend processes.
It's not always about the tool; sometimes, it's about the process and the vision to embrace new ways of doing things.

Is there rumours that it will be an upgrade! I think the general consensus was the new iPad was a step back in terms of size and screen in order to reduce price?

The iPad Pro is great for taking notes, but hmm expensive for doing so. The iPad Pro should have been created with hardware that could run MacOS not IOS.

These are great for video editing !
Ok you can't do Final Cut Pro but you edit something on iMovie in 4K and the export times are faster than most of the high end MacBook pro's,it's a proper beast when it comes to things like that.

Surely thats a contradiction in logic??
Bigger screen = more viewing space = Better for working on
Faster processor = More apps can run = Better for working on

The recent iPad release was a cheaper model, there'll be high end iPad Pro refreshes this year.

Bottom line with these is that they are essentially a turbo charged, larger screen iPad, with enhanced connectivity for keyboard and pen attachments. What I'd stress these are not, is a PC or Mac replacement - they still only run iOS Apps as opposed to 'full' versions of things like Office.
Now, if you're going to use it 90%+ of the time as a browsing or media consumption device then I'd argue there are cheaper and better options. If you're going to get 'some' use out of it as a replacement computer then, OK that's pretty much it's niche. However if you're going to use it 50% of the time or more as a computer rather than a tablet then you might as well buy a Surface or a normal PC/Mac.
Looking further into the future, at some point in the next 10 years we'll probably see a convergence of software between mobile apps and full version software, but it's not quite there yet. Google are making the charge with Chromebooks that run Android apps, and Microsoft has been doing it's best to provide platform neutral software and 'universal' apps. Until that point, you'll have to make do with a excellent tablet that makes for an 'OK' computer, or an excellent computer that makes for an 'OK' tablet.
It's all about what you use it for (and to a certain extent, which hardware/software ecosystem you're attached to).
iPad Pro 12.9" very much fits into the niche of "I'm a casual user who knows they might need it as a computer occasionally".

Scorcher of a deal, I paid a similar amount from JL for my 32gb when these first came out.
Amazing device; I must say that I prefer using mine over my desktop and laptop. The device itself does not show any signs of slowing down and still feels lightning quick. If you can handle its size, then you will absolutely love this device.
