USB 2.0 maxes out at 480Mbps minus a bit for overhead. You would need a pricier USB 3.0 dongle to go much faster.

I got one of these at the back end of last year. Was sceptical because they had so many reviews in such a short time of listing, which is fishy for a relatively unknown company. Can't believe how well it works, both bands. Gone months of seamless online gaming, destroying my TP-Link that would keep losing connection.
They aren't kidding here, it will cause your PC to crash if you don't install drivers beforehand. As i found out on Win 8.1 :P
The Asus PCE-68AC seems to be using BCM94360 chip series as well. And it doesn't have bluetooth but costs as much as twice the price.

I'm rocking an Asus PCE-68AC in my main PC and it's pretty great, I've passed 80MB/s over it, on the other hand it also needs drivers and crashes one of my PCs (which may be due to BIOS bugs, need to get around to updating it).

Does not work out of the box with Kali (Backtrack) Linux. The great thing about this adapter is that you can unscrew the antenna and connect a high gain directional one.
Even with the included antenna this adapter is great for regular Windows use when travelling, as it will likely work much better than your laptop internal WiFi in a weak signal area.

In that case and if you are OK to tolerate max "N" speed and you are not expecting football-pitch coverage, you only need to spend £3.36 for an item delivered ex-UK (edit) which is USB-powered via the included USB cable plugged into the STB. Simple configuration. You will need an ethernet cable if you don't already have one, but random examples are only 80p delivered ex-UK (Playtech) or 99p delivered ex-UK, or possibly 10m crossover 96p collected Maplin.
Edit: suggested item now only avaialble from foreign sellers at time of edit https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B01LA8AKKA/

Sweet, having had to use my homeplug upstairs for my BT box I thought I would have to fork out for more homeplugs.
The other Homeplug kept having drop outs on PC anyhow, which stopped me playing online.
Hopefully this will solve the issue and keep a good constant connection.
In terms of lag, would this (wifi) be worse than homeplugs?

Maybe I wasn't clear, the box has ethernet socket and connects with the router through ethernet. I wanted to connect with the dongle so that I can relocate the router. I have not used dongles om the set top box before so don't know how they work but this could be the first experiment.

The PS4 already has wifi so I'm not sure why this would be needed, unless you mean to add 5ghz to the original model PS4 but I would be very surprised if it recognised this adaptor as the PS4 OS is entirely proprietary to the PS4 and will only have a very limited driver set. In short pretty sure it wouldn't work...

Plug and play generally refers to using things like this on computers, it is in fact a well known computing standard introduced way back in the days of Windows 95. Due to the proprietary OS most set top boxes run you can't reasonably expect them to just work with any random USB wifi dongle. I know many of the humax boxes such as their freesat and possibly freeview PVRs can be upgraded with a wifi dongle but even then it has to be a humax branded one or one of a small pool of compatible adaptors.
Not saying it won't work 100% but you will be VERY lucky if it does....

Sounds an unusual combination (set top box / no ethernet / no integral wifi) which implies no integral drivers for whatever OS the box uses, unless you can load drivers to the box, which may be equally unusual.

CampGareth to izzuddin101
27 Apr 17#27
What are you trying to do because connecting to a wifi network and becoming a hotspot (a wifi access point) simultaneously makes no sense. It's like asking can you charge a laptop and use that laptop to power the national grid simultaneously. Maybe you're wanting to extend your wifi network to cover more of a building or something, in which case there are better options.

Completely plug and play. I think it just uses drivers already on the device or in Windows itself. Anyway, 30 seconds after you plug it in, you're good to go.

Shame code doesn't work with the warehouse ones (would be 50p cheaper). I got two of these when they were on offer at £5.99, which they have been quite a few times before though I think this could be cheapest. Would get another though I don't need more than two.
Of the two I got one works really well but the other one, while ok, seems to get quite a few disconnects and just doesn't seem to perform as well. The odd thing is the one that doesn't work that great is literally about a metre from the router where as the other one is about a room and a half away. Wonder if too much signal can be a problem, though never heard of that before? Maybe I should try unscrewing the antenna on the close one....

Leave antennae connected and swap the adaptors between locations to assist in identifying any individual device-specific issue... then consider removing antenna on nearest adaptor to router.
