Good price if you know there are no leaks in your system. (Not sure if this service includes a leak check or not). If you think you have a leak, it needs to be checked prior to a recharge, or this may prove to be a waste of money.

Voted hot.

If the pressure test shows a leak then they would surely not proceed & hence no refund due as the payment should not have been made beforehand. A surefire way of getting your car AC system checked over before spending wasted money.

Good price though.

This is not a bad price (often this can be £50, or £80 at a main dealer) but it is always worth checking. I was going to use ATS but have just found that a local garage (Central Autopoint here in Corby - 01536 261 619) has a deal for only £25 at the moment - so I've booked it in there.

Good price and service. Ats workington have always done a good job no problems and no found extras. I did get it cheaper though with Groupon last year maybe worth waiting for it to drop further. I like the idea of buying own antibacterial aerosol from europarts cheap and with a good discount as aircon can get a bit stinky. Hot (or cool) from me

AC gas is a closed system. If it doesn't work you have a leak. A regas will solve nothing, just pump gas into the atmosphere.

Gas refrigerant normally removed for re use then then pull as close to vacuum as possible (this is leak test as well ) then refill with correct amount of refrigerant inc lubricant . At least thats how we did it many year's ago when did lorry fridges and the odd aircon with thermo king in bad old days of R12 refrigerant

I'm debating, mines eight years old and never done anything to it, you are supposed to recharge once per period of some description.
0scar222
14 Apr 17 1 #56
If working OK leave alone in theory should never need recharge .After all its just a fridge you never get that recharged
if woking ok .But car aircon more prone to leaks so sometimes lose bit of refrigerant
Just have evaporator (bit inside heater) anti bacteria cleaned as they can tend to smell
Besford
14 Apr 17 2 #57
Many people think their a/c is just for hot summer days. It's great in winter for keeping windows clear and it should be run regularly to keep the oil cirulating and the seals working. If you have auto climate control (just set the temp) it's probably doing this for you already but do check how you've set it.

Problem with these 'bargain' top ups is that you should really evacuate the whole system and recharge with the correct amount of oil and refrigerant. If they just 'top up' the refrigerant you probably won't have the specified amount in there so performance and reliability could be adversely affected.
Zimmy
14 Apr 17 1 #58
Had it done by ATS last year when they had this offer. IIRC they do suck the old stuff out first and the anti bac is optional. BTW most cars have a big sticker under the bonnet saying what type of refrigerant it takes.

This is a good deal - another option is to do it yourself, the one from Halfords use to cost from memory £20 + £10 odd quid for the trigger, I remember doing about 3 cars with that, £10 refund for the bottle. Its now shockingly £40 for the gas alone so this is a great deal. I remember many years ago I went for a regas and minutes after it started leaking, it was fine before - so I ended up with a Luxury motor with no air con, over pressurised the system I think. Over the last 15 years always done it myself with these low pressure diy cans and never had a problem and the last can had an additive to clean bacteria, and it actually worked, got rid of that post air con smell. est the bay has a cheap, decent kit for top ups.

I wouldnt mind paying for a full extraction and regas/additives.

Different places will be different, it all depends on the people working there. In ATS Morley I went in for an AC recharge and 2 tyres fitted. I enquired whether new valves and balancing is included in the price and they said yes. I told them, one of the wheels has a TPMS, that needs replacing with a standard valve. Mid way through, got brought over and was told they might have to replace the locking wheel bolts. What should have taken around an hour took 2.5 instead. Finally ready, they had replaced the locking wheel bolts without consulting on cost, but I was tired, I paid up and left.

Got home, realised I wasn't given an invoice, the valves weren't changed, the AC pipe valve caps were left on the strut and crushed by the bonnet (I replaced these a few weeks prior).
Went back to complain about the valves and invoice. The manager told me the valves weren't changed because I wasn't charged for it to which I replied, it's impossible for me to tell if I wasn't given an invoice. He printed an invoice off, it was a right state.
I pointed out the obvious errors and extra charges such as tyre disposal (meant to be included all inclusively) but only for one tyre when I had 2 changed etc etc. I was annoyed at having to return for what should have been a simple issue and voiced my concerns for safety and my time wasted for this. I just got told by the manager "You don't have to come back here then". At which point I told him to expect a demand for a refund made in that case.

Fast forward, ATS headquarters approved a £50 refund.... Now I am thinking I should be refunded the whole amount... my AC system was never adequately pressure tested because a week later, I have no AC again!

Took my car here last year for air con re-gas. They supposedly check for leaks beforehand, but my aircon stopped working a week after it was refilled. Took it back to which they stated we can only do a simple pressure check and see if the pressure drops on the machine and this is done for a matter of minutes, we cannot do a sophisticated check as we dont have the equipment. What a con.
idingsdale
14 Apr 17 #67
No system is a perfect seal, it's perfectly normal for an AC system to lose a bit of gas over time and a regas is a completely normal bit of maintenance to do every so often. If the system has a leak, it wouldn't be filled again as it would fail the pressure test.

14 Apr 17 #72
When a regas deal was on here before and comments about leak tests, apparently they don't pressurise the system which would show up leaks; they evacuate (vacuum) which can cause leaks to close/seal and not be detected.

Hello!

I got this done today at Dartford. The Manager said the Anti-Bacterial is done as part of the AC Recharge.

134a was only pushed out because Europe wanted lower gwp in people's car refrigerant systems.
Neither 134a or 1234yf are 'gases' they are refrigerants.
A leak has to be rather massive for the tiny vacuum they pull on these machines to be noticed.
A car ac system on 134a can run upto 17 bar from memory ( I don't do much car stuff)
1234yf runs much higher pressures.
If a system stops operating due to lack of refrigerant it must have a leak.
its against the law to recharge a leaky refrigeration system without finding the leak. TBH I don't know how they are still getting away with this TBH.
Side note, your fridge at home doesn't need charging because no one **** with it, your car should be the same...

First time poster, steve.

Thank you for that, it is good to have someone knowledgable aboard. Most of us are just guessing with specialised areas like this - we either wait for things to break (in this case get a refridgerant leak) or heed the manufacturers' warnings that things need servicing frequently. I fall into the second caragory and have booked my 3 year old car in for an a/c service at a local garage on Tuesday. It sounds (from what you say) that the car doesn't need it (it operates fine) and may even be better left alone.
Many thanks for your input.

Good Price , but your better of calling a mobile Aircon mechanic to your premises if possible,
for approx the same price they will top up of AC, run checks on your Compressor and Condenser and check for leaks and have the knowledge and skills to repair any A/C fault . Whereas these ATS/Kwik Fit and in some extent dealers do not have the speciliast skills to do this as i learnt. Also it is illegal to top up AC on a car with a fault.

Can anyone confirm whether or not this does include the anti-bacterial thing? The offer link specifically mentions that it is extra in the T&Cs...

Incidentally the offer URL also says that the offer runs until 30th April, so not sure where the 31st May deadline on here has come from...

edit: By confirm I guess I'm asking whether or not they got given the anti-bac thing for free by mistake, or whatever, having only paid for the regas per this deal.
Durzel
25 Apr 17 #121
Interestingly the T&Cs don't have this paragraph in it anymore. They now specifically say that the discount code does not apply to the anti-bacterial treatment, and that it is chargeable at the full rate of £19.99.

That would be why the discount code doesn't work on it when you add it to your cart...
