I've been using a three sim for the last week which I got via the uswitch deal (600mins, unlimited texts + 30gb data for £20 p/m 30 day contract.) I have been impressed with the speed of the 4g. At home been getting 30mbps, at a motorway services last week was getting 50mbps and at work in town was getting 70mbps! Didn't think those speeds were possible but a speed checker confirmed it. Asked a couple of Q's with three via live chat prior to taking out the deal as I wanted to make sure I could use it abroad straight away and they were very helpful. So far, I'm very impressed. I'm voting hot as I just needed a stop gap sim whilst our broadband switches over, so if I'd seem this deal I would have gone for it.

I don't understand why you would pay for a data sim, when there was a deal on a sim only mobile that was £12 a month for unlimited txts, minutes and 8gb?
Can you not just tether a mobile and use the data from that rather than paying for a data sim?
Im confused. If someone could help out on the advantages, that would be great.

Very simply in the UK you cannot tether to any unlimited phone SIMs :disappointed:

It's great for dual-sim phones for example.
Personally I have one of these in my OnePlus3:
12Gb for one year. I use on average 800Mb a month, this gives me extra when I travel to Europe. I use a PayAsYouGo for calls and texts in case i'm out and about. Because I mostly get wifi and use whatsapp over calls, this turns out way cheaper than any sim-only deal for me.
About £4 total per month for my usage (about £2 data + max £2 text and calls)

Just as an FYI, those wifi hotspots aren't always stable nor usable.
I currently live in HK and you're probably better off using 3UK for data and picking up a cheap SIM card here for local calls (if you require it). Data plans are grossly expensive over here, heck even 3HK charge £16 per day for roaming data yet 3UK has their "Feel at Home" for designated countries.

Hello mate this is 12 month sim...not a monthly payment sim
Have a look at this one too.. but sure depends how long you are on the island - probably not good if you are resident. But yeah i was dissapointed not to get 4g in HK with three, they don't stipulate that in the info.

My house is next to a PCCW phone box which has a wifi hotspot so will buy a CSL 30 day wifi pass to use with my ipad and laptop . It's only HK$158 and is valid for 30 days and unlimited use. Can also use CSL/PCCW wifi at thousands of hotspots around HK.
Also need a sim for my smartphone but it appears mobile data is quite expensive in HK. Best from Three HK is £30 for 3GB of data valid for 30 days! China mobile is 5p per mb and CSL is £20 for 1Gb of data valid for 30 days!
I will probably find a wifi hotspot such as a phone box or use my 24gb data sim.

Going to try and use my three 24gb card in HK this summer. Three are a Hong Kong company so hopefully it should be ok.
Luckily, my house is right next to a PCCW phone box with a wifi signal so will get a CSL sim for free Wifi for home use.

2 May 17#42
That is odd - is it maybe a NVMO on the Three network? Anyway, I have been on Three for a while, so I knew what to expect (generally decent 3G coverage, but out in the country side there may be no connection at all...). And the free roaming countries are great, but unfortunately usually quite slow. My only niggle is that the data SIMs do not have the 3-2-1 tariff for phone calls. You can make calls and send SMS, but there are quite pricey.
pengwyn
2 May 17#41
Not sure they will they must've sold them too fast to hike the price up. I believe there is a lower price point between 40 and 28 which would command steady sales. 28 was a scorching deal though
bertiebasset
2 May 17#40
Agree, I've gone for this one with the 5% discount, heat as you say, but in the meantime will keep an eye on the Amazon page in the hope they may bring the price down somewhere nearer to last time, then if so, I'll buy a shedload
pengwyn
2 May 17#39
If it was the original price I'd go for it but it's not worth saving five pound for the extra 12 gbp exposure this deal is better but I have five phones with the 200mb free data reward sims only. This is good if you only have 1 phone heat
MrPuddington
1 May 17#37
The regular prices is 30 pounds, I think. But Amazon had a special double version for Christmas: 24 GB and 24 months to use them. Great value - I am still using mine.
But as far as current offers go, this seems to be the best.
bertiebasset to MrPuddington

Same source is now selling 24 GB for £40.31, but with up to 4 weeks wait for delivery. See my post #16 above.
I also wish I'd grabbed lots at 28 quid, but at the time only bought the one because I was uncertain if 3 data coverage in my area would be acceptable.
Currently using one of these from MyMemory, tethering in the same phone at the same location and, tbh, does occasionally lose connection, whereas the Amazon one sailed through the 24 GB without a hiccup. Probably just chance.

Yeah I've been with 3 since 2013 I think, so I've been through a fair few phones now and can't blame the handsets I'm always kinda surprised where I seem to hit black spots. It's pretty good on 3G although I remember getting next to no signal near The Houses of Parliament a couple of years ago when I worked that area and Shad Thames too. I suppose it could be tall buildings but it's frustrating. I've been working near Heathrow and 3G is good but not seeing much 4G on my downtime.
I wanted to switch to EE as I had a PAYG spare phone and always seemed to see 4G not that I had the allowance to use it, 3 offered me a tethering deal and I stayed.

You'll find that the Amazon 24 GB offer is available again - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01M3VJ2B2/?tag=ho01f-21
but at the massively increased price of £40.38 (from memory I think it was £28.40 around Xmas?), and with the added complication that they now state "Usually dispatched within 1 to 4 weeks ".
So a possible saving of £5.12 (per 24 GB) on this deal, and valid for 2 years instead of 1, but with maybe a month's wait for delivery.

Its good you said, I bought one for going to Reykjavik and it didn't work - 3 network needs to be more specific on what areas in those countries they cover. I have dual sims so my EE sim could access the internet but it was pretty disappointing it cost me £20 and didn't do anything.

EE drip feeds you 2GB a month though, which doesn't suit my purposes. I may not use a sim for month or two and then use up 3-4g in a couple of weeks. And the EE site themselves are asking £90 for a 24gb sim.
