Meh. I bought a SNES from a carboot and Zelda: A Link to the Past, Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and a ton of other stuff for £40 and am reliving one of the golden generations of gaming again. So using your logic, I don't know why you'd spend £160 on a Wii U TBH when you could have got all this instead.

BTW the GTX 1080 is tempting at this price.

Wow I just bought a 2nd hand Wii U and Zelda BOTW for £160 and having possibly the best gaming experience Ive ever had but some PC gamers actually would buy this for almosy 3 times the price which on its own would effectively be a not very good door stop

For a third of the price you could be having the an incredible once in a lifetime experience or you could buy this and run your games at 10fps faster than what you are currently doing

People enjoy different gaming experiences? Different platforms provide different experiences. 1440p/144hz or 4k/60fps first person shooters and such obviously dont work on a underpowered wii u, so how ever much fun the new Zelda is, the console isnt for everyone. This is just another option that appeals to different people. Dont be so close minded, different things for different people.

You can't get Zelda on PC, and if you could I think it run a little more than 10fps faster on a 1080 compared to a wii U. What is the point in the these comments? Its not even comparable.

And boy am I still reminded because its bloody useless at keeping the door open

An extra 10 FPS? You've just proved how little your knowledge of this subject is.

If you put a 1080 in your rig and you can only pull 10 FPS more than a Wii U then you're definitely trying to play games with a toaster.
If I were to put this 1080 in my rig right now i'll probably have an increase of over 100 FPS on my current build.

Also if Wii U Zelda breath of the wild is 'the best gaming experience you've ever had' then I don't think you've had a very good upbringing. Ocarina of time will always be the best Zelda game, and even so, those games pale in comparison to the majority of my PC titles.

I'm just going to assume you're not a troll, so...

High end PC Gaming is for luxury, hardcore or competitive gamers. Casual gamers and children on a limited budget aren't going to get much out of a budget "gaming PC" (unless it's all second hand parts and they're playing on low/medium settings), nor will they want to invest in the setup costs and space needed for a good high end PC gaming experience (big table, high end gaming chair, multiple monitors, top quality peripherals, etc).

There are category of PC games that you simply can't find on consoles or don't work well, at least not the top tier of games. MMORPG, MOBA, RTS, many strategy and simulation type games. Games like WoW, LoL, Dota, Civ, FM, C&C, Starcraft, TW, etc etc, are legendary and amazing titles which provide experiences you can't find on consoles. FPS games are also better with a good keyboard and mouse. Overall all of these categories of PC exclusive games are easily the best multiplayer, competitive and social gaming experiences because they're designed around it, which is why they're reflected by the size and scale of pro gaming communities and esports for PC titles.

PC and consoles serve largely different purposes. Consoles are better for sports, fighting, and triple A single player games. Like the majority of gaming enthusiasts I like to dabble in both and enjoy the best of both worlds.

So the main point I'll make to you is that if you genuinely like video games then sticking to a limited story single player game on a console aimed at kids just means you're missing out...

I'm pretty sure people have misinterpreted Richard27 - he doesn't mean 10fps faster than a Wii U, he means 10fps faster when upgrading your existing GPU (e.g. GTX 970 to 1070)... he's also not being literal! It's hyperbole.

It will be the usual rubbish from AMD. All hype and no delivery. If any of the Vega cards even come close to a 1080 never mind a 1080 TI I will eat my hat. I got utterly sick of waiting for the next great white hope from AMD years ago.

Every new hardware cycle people get sucked in by them and they just never manage to deliver on the promise. Even the much vaunted Ryzen has failed to live up to the PC gaming press' initial hopes and dreams. 7700K still rules the roost as far as CPU gaming performance goes and that just makes me sad as I thought Ryzen really was a game changer.

Oh and if you get the chance, buy the MSI card over this one every single time.

The 160 for a Wii U and zelda isn't really a good deal either. Got my wiI u for 140 4 years ago.

The Wii U architecture is ancient too. The trip core CPU is from around 2004/2005 and even then it wasn't performanthe. V

The gpu is a cut down 4850..... just.... awful.

Zelda is not worth 160..... maybe 40
ollie87
16 Mar 17 1 #23
PC gaming isn't a luxury and can be done on a similar budget to console gaming. However you won't get a £500 GPU in a budget build.

PC gaming is broad and should be for everyone, I pity console gamers who don't know any better. I'm willing to help anyone build their own gaming rig, budget or otherwise.

Actually there's little difference between the two. Basically a high end PC is just a high end console. The main difference is with high end snobbery. I've got a high end PC and ps4 pro. I sit in the same comfy chair to play them, play on the same massive screen, play them through the same home theatre and have great fun.
I play at native 4K on PC and don't understand why there's a obvious schism between console gamers and high end PC gamers.
Honestly, why would anyone spend well over a grand on a PC and then play on a tiny screen? In my living room I'd need a telescope to see a tiny 28 inch screen. Why do people have to play on screens so small that you have to have your nose pressed against the screen?
What about gamepads and keyboards. In this day and age why would people want to to use a keyboard and mouse? It's so uncomfortable
Today I played FIFA 17 and mass effect andromeda at 4K on PC. I have a very comfy ikea chair and footstool. The home theatre is cranked up and I watch sublime pictures on a big screen. I play with a wireless 360 gamepad and its sublime.
Now we have he snobby PC gamer who is hunched over a keyboard and mouse with nose pressed against a tiny screen and he's perched up on a vibrating office chair with little speakers in the arms. Yes I'm being a little naughty here. But it's all so uncomfortable.
Regardless of what medium one plays on, they are just games.
Only around 8% of gamers have high end setups according to steam surveys.
The rest play on set ups that will struggle to match the ps4 pro in terms of graphics.
It's just a game. The so called high end PC gamers embrace the latest technology whilst at the same time their gaming style is rooted in a different century.
There's much difference between consoles and PC . Not really. Some just have better graphics and others have worse.
mark6226

Sorry I forgot to mention those high end PC rigs with all the silly flashing led lights.
Why would anyone want a Xmas PC rig. I've turned the silly lights off.
I'm astonished How many serious product reviews mention the childish light show.
How can anyone look down their nose at a console when they have Blackpool illuminations on their games machine.

So the *PROMO* is: Zotac GTX 1080 AMP Edition - £455.99 for 24 hours only. The offer ends on 17th March at 9:00 AM.

Now apparently, at some point today, there will be another *PROMO* on the Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming.

The Zotac GTX 1080 AMP Edition was originally £499.99 reduced to £455.99 for this sale. The Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming is £529.99 and I quote "For those who miss out on this tomorrow we shall do a deal on the Gigabyte G1 1080 which shall also crush all competitors in the UK."

Amazon as well as many others has priced the Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming at £499.99. So with that in mind, it SHOULD be lower than £499.99. I don't think it'll beat the Zotac's price of £455.99 though.

Not much difference between them either.

Zotac GTX 1080 AMP Edition (2 Fans):

Core Clock: 1683MHz
Boost Clock: 1822MHz
Memory: 8192MB 10010MHz GDDR5X

Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming (3 Fans):

Core Clock: 1721MHz
Boost Clock: 1860MHz
Memory: 8192MB 10000MHz GDDR5X

I don't know if 3 fans instead of 2 makes much difference

NVidia are worried, look at all the price reductions and the price of the 1080ti. I need a 4k card, so a 1080 will only just do, I am thinking from the demos that the Vega will split the 1080 and 1080ti, so it could be a sweet spot depending on the price.
I prefer NVidia, but welcome the chance to encourage competition, which will benefit us all. So if I can WAIT and the Vega is about the same price/performance they may get my money.

In your opinion. You find Mouse and Keyboard to be uncomfortable whilst I find them ENTIRELY superior to controllers in every single way, be it button mapping, mechanical keys, ergonomic rests, quick mouse button access, even the scroll on a mouse to change weapon is much much easier than having to press another key to scroll through 'last' weapon that the consoles often offer.
Also your idea of a 'snobby PC gamer' is factually incorrect. Most high end PC gamers are playing on 28inch+ 144hz Monitors with comfortable gaming chairs and top of the range 7.1 sound headsets with sound blaster cards. I also find it EXTREMELY unlikely that only 8% of PC gamers have a high end rig when you consider the minimum requirements of latest titles like Mass Effect Andromeda.

Nobody is 'hunched over' watching on 'tiny screens' and I would be surprised to find that ANYBODY uses a vibrating chair.

We could all downplay the other half - watch:

Who would want to sit on a 6 year old couch with bits of old pizza stuffed between the cushions, whilst holding an uncomfortably large and greasy controller, listening to tinny TV sound on a 60hz refresh rate TV with upscaled picture quality, and running at peasantry 60hz at 1080p, most likely 30 Frames.

Also. Your argument about the PS4 Pro is absolutely laughable, The PS4 Pro's GPU is comparable AT BEST to entry level gaming cards such at GTX 970 and AMD RX480 which can both be picked up for less than £150.

Your entire argument is that there isn't much difference between console gaming and PC gaming but you are massively, massively, wrong.
Ev0lution
17 Mar 17 #36
Again you buy the hype. Look at the 1800X. Before the embargoes were lifted on the performance of it we had all these paid shills telling us how it was 20% better than a 6900k then when the actual reality hit it was nothing of the sort. In fact all the gaming press could say was how disappointed the reality was vs the hypothetical benchmarks put out by AMD.

Vega will be exactly the same. From now till May it will be a series of carefully planned tests which show it in the best light possible. I even saw a ridiculous story that it supposedly outperforms a GTX 1080 by 35% 'in early tests' even a 1080 TI struggles to do that and its effectively a (very slightly) cut down Titan X Pascal.

What we can say right now with confidence given how AMD works is that it will be more power hungry and cheaper than the green team but it wont be better.

And as a gamer you will know what the first rule of PC gaming is. You buy the best every time.
Ev0lution
17 Mar 17 #37
I'm sorry I don't see how you can debunk anyone's argument when you are claiming that a GTX 970 and RX480 are 'entry level cards'. Now if you had said a 1050 TI and an RX 470 then maybe you would have had a point (although I'd call them mid range myself) but you are calling 2 cards that are both £200+ and almost £300 in the case of the 970 entry level cards.
steve_bezerker
19 Mar 17 #38
Where are you looking exactly? I have a GTX970 currently and I paid £175 for it, about 8 months ago, I'm just waiting on Vega. Which overpriced shop are you looking in? the 970 is so old that most online retailers don't even sell it anymore. the performance of a 970 is incredibly lackluster. I'm not sure how you could say it was anything but entry level when a 980 literally outperforms by 50%
Ev0lution to steve_bezerker
23 Mar 17 #41
Not brand new you didn't mate, it never happened. Why the hell do people make up fantasy stories to fit their arguments?

Oh and when it was current the 970 was the best bang for buck card on the market. Lacklustre certainly wasn't one of the terms used at all in its reviews.
steve_bezerker
19 Mar 17 #39
Also a quick Google search confirms RX480 is already below £150 whilst being comparably entry level to the GTX970

Ryzen has lived up to expectations and anyone who thinks it hasn't is a fool.

Ryzen 1700 for 329 oc to 4ghz keeps up with a 6900k. Yes the 7700k ipc is higher due to frequency but so what? Anyone in the market for a cpu with 8 cores is doing more than just gaming- and if they aren't then they are a fool with their money.

Your comparing a Ferrari to a tank - you're playing top trumps..... anyone with a brain knows how pointless this is to do.
Ev0lution
23 Mar 17 #42
Yep, you just keep telling yourself that.

Then keep believing its a conspiracy from Intel, Microsoft and all the software companies to keep AMD down by failing to optimise the multi core setup of the AMD chipset as AMD have been blaming everyone and anyone for years.

And if you are talking about gaming sweet spots then its an i5 all the way. Or of course everyone who buys one of these CPUs will be a heavy video editing buff and do a lot of multi core processing as well. I forgot that.

95% of people who will buy one of these CPUs will be buying it for one thing and thats gaming.

And in gaming it does not live up to the initial hype when compared to the Intel processors. The gaming press cannot ALL be wrong can they?
steve_bezerker
23 Mar 17 #43
You're actually insane. I have no need to make up a fantasy about a 970. If I was going to make a fantasy argument I'd say that I have a GTX 1080TI, not a card that is about 7 generations old. My GTX 970 cost me £175, bought in about June/July last year, around the same time that the 980Ti's starting really taking over the market.

Also why would a brand new at the time card be considered lacklustre, this was an argument of relevance... The GTX 970 is no longer a relevant card when compared with modern GPU's so as of right now, the card is heavily Lacklustre, losing out to about 6 generations worth of cards.

Grow up.

7 Generations? Wait....what?

It goes 9xx, 9xxTi, 10xx, 10xxTi So I make that 3 generations back myself or 4 generations ago. How the hell you make that 7 generations I will never know.

And the GTX 970 will still eat everything you throw at it today at 1080p so your point is a lot like your counting skills.

Oh and btw, throwing out insults by calling someone insane over a bit of plastic....is,well...insane, really.
