Eh, I own an Xbone and a PS4 and each has their pros and cons. Xbone has backwards compatibility, some great exclusives, EA access, better online / games with gold, a nice picture in picture mode and a UI that doesn't look like ass. PS4 has even better exclusives and also benefits from actually letting you just pop a disc in and start playing - I hate the long install times of the Xbone. The multi-platform titles are also generally perform better on PS4, but I don't really play consoles for visual fidelity - that's what my PC is for. Each to their own though...

Ignorant tech question: will the Xbox One S support an external hard drive which holds 4kHD videos on it? (if yes, are there file formats it wont support?)

At what price will the Xbox One S be worth it just for the UHD player alone?

I think that even the standard Xbox One price over £200 is cheaper than most of the stand-alone players, so at £180 its a relative bargain.
The only thing, I read that the XB1 didn't support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X audio formats. Apparently support was or will be added in an update. For general consumer, the XB1 is probably still a good entry point for UHD.

I think the kids prefer Xbox as you can get them roblox etx but no doubt ps4 is a better console. I got one with Horizon in the recent argos deal. Just went out and bought last of us remastered, uncharted 4 and Infamous second son

Agreed my sons console of choice depend on what his friends have and Xbox One is way ahead of PS4 in his eyes.

I had an Xbox one s and recently sold it to buy a switch. For me, the only compelling reasons for the Xbox (if you also have a ps4) are forza horizon 2 and 3 and ori and the blind forest. That said, I only ever got to about 30% complete on either forza game and didn't complete ori either. Time will tell if the switch has enough diverse software to differentiate it from the ps4 and Xbox one.
It's all personal taste though.

I really want to play the Dead Rising games and my PC isn't fast enough. Maybe I'll upgrade that.

Just sold my PS4 with 6 months warranty left, to get an Xbox One. Not sure whether to buy one now... People don't seem to recommend them.

I deffo wouldn't. I only bought to play gears of war and some other exclusives. Now looking to sell it :disappointed:

Had a One S since launch. Prefer the ps4. The One S just seems so slow when you're trying to do anything... signing in, loading a game. Every once in a while get a message saying 'the game took too long to load' so closes the game. Even turning it off, sometimes takes ages to turn off.

Have a one s but just bought a ps4 pro with horizon, amazing game and graphics. Always been a fan of xbox but the upcoming games on ps4 look better especially next year.

Not surprising, other than the uhd player theres not much reason to choose an Xbox.
