great price for a basic nas. i'd go for more functionality and a synology personally, but this is great. heated.

I'd love to know why this needed to be moderated (seems to be happening to a load of my recent posts!)...

Morning theyiddo,
There are are many reasons why a post drops in for a quick mod check, it can be when comments are posted in quick succession, sometimes when a pic is posted.

I currently stream from a drive connected to my laptop to our TVs using dlna but my pc has to be on so would this also need the pc to be on to be discoverable?
HankHandsome to Typey1

nope. you do need a DLNA capable device that's connected to your TV that can see this drive, but if you've got one - a blu-ray player maybe - then you don't ever have to have your PC on.

No, Twonky handles that and works perfectly with my TV without needing a PC. The unit is also hackable, I've got Transmission and NZBGet installed on mine and both work perfectly. It's also the most stable thing I've ever owned, runs 24/7 and has never needed a reboot.

Are you able to connect this drive directly to router with Ethernet cable? Thanks

Did it have to go back only to be resold as recertified?

A lot of HUK deals about this recently have had people posting about security issues with the remote access - is there any truth in this?

Is it noisy. I got a Iomega 2tb and gets quite loud
basergorkobal to paperdragon
21 Mar 17#14
It's as loud as the drive inside. There is no fan.
The WD red drives in these units can be on the noisy side for a 3.5" hard drive. I wouldn't want it sat on my desk. But tucked away in a cupboard should be fine.

(Sorry for the off-topic post) It does it everytime if I'm connected to my work network via VPN. I assume it's because the post appears to be coming from a non-UK IP address.

Thanks OP If you keep this in a cupboard/cabinet, make sure there is sufficient airflow/circulation for fan cooling.

Went for it. I know there will be tons of info on the net, but does anyone have an easy to follow step by step guide on how to set it up for media sharing please.
Thanks

Where do recertified drives come from ?

It's a bit of a red flag that WD seem to always have so many refurbished drives to resell. It implies a pretty high rate of failure.
The refurbished ones might be fine but personally I'm concerned.

Yes Twonky is a DLNA server. Plex can be added to the NAS once hacked if that's what you prefer.
Typey1
22 Mar 17#27
If Twonky is already installed I'll stick with that, looks like a bit of hassle to hack, also i noticed you can add a drive via the usb so hopefully I'll Access my files straight from there.

Thanks for the reply. I would use my laptop, Tablets, iPads and Android boxes that do have DLNA options, rather than a smart TV.
HankHandsome
22 Mar 17#29
The android box connected to your television would probably be the most efficient method really. you can install kodi and point it towards the nas drive for your video content.
there's a very good DLNA-capable app on the play store called "Media House"
I used this myself before I eventually discovered kodi.
basically, you need any DLNA-enabled device that can connect to your TV. once you've got that, then it should just see the NAS on the network and you can go from there.
Thanks. I must admit I was thinking of mainly using the boxes, and do already have Kodi installed. I was wondering if there was any special or specific way that the NAS box itself should be set up and configured, or it that straight forward?

22 Mar 17#32
once you've followed the usual out-of-the-box setup, then it's often ready to go from that point onwards. when it's visible on your network, you're generally good to go

What is the drive like for porn backups 1080p formats lol? :stuck_out_tongue:
Can this drive be used like a normal external hard drive and disabling the cloud network feature?
brian2708b1
28 Mar 17#36
You can disable the cloud features, but there is no USB port on these so you'd still need to connect it to the network via an ethernet cable to access locally.
I have the 6tb, and altough it took a while to get all my stuff on it, it's now working perfectly well. I say it took a while because it would start of with a good transfer speed, then go right down to pratically zero! Had to keep rebooting it to get it to transfer fast again.
Although initially it was a pain, I'm happy with it now, and I use 2 Kodi boxes (1 upstairs and 1 downstairs) to access all films / tv series I have on it.

I got one of these and am trying to return it but it is proving almost impossible to do. I have been given a returns authorisation number but still awaiting instructions on how to send it back. I have phoned them last Friday, yesterday and today. All they say is I have to wait for further instructions.

I added a passport drive to it's usb and it didn't read many files but when i hooked up my powered elements it could see all and the dlna around the home is perfect so i decided to keep it but returning it is hard they emailed me a contact number to initiate return but i then changed my mind.
