Had these on a 1.6 focus years ago. They are ok, but do not use them in snow/ice - they are absolutely dire in sub-zero conditions; theres more traction between 2 near-naked female wrestlers coated in baby oil in a paddling pool.

Personally, when buying tyres I'm more concerned with grip than rolling resistance (rating F). If you want harder tyres, then that's fine, but (as I say, personally) longevity is not a factor when I assess tyres as being top or not.
Wet grip (C, which isn't fantastic) is a consideration, and as you will see from my previous post I do put importance on that and that's why RS3 are an equally good shout for me.
These are decent performance tyres for higher powered cars, designed for spirited driving. They are not necessarily right for a low power car driven carefully, where something with less grip and more longevity might be more appropriate.
They are well reputed (you only need to read the reviews on any site you care to find), and that combined with personal experience of the tyres, is why I call them "top tyres". Hopefully that is not too subjective an assertion to be included in the description, but I'm fine with it if a mod wants to edit it out.
Either way, they are certainly a bargain, at this price, if you already know what you're looking at and already know what you want.

What are these like compared to uniroyal rains sport?
Jules_HT to wadz03
8 Mar 171#5
Ha, very apt question- I have Rainsport 3 on both my cars and love them. Similar price, too. But I've had T1-R in the past and been very impressed. I'd say in the dry the Proxes edge it, in the wet the RS3 do. The Proxes probably last a little better IME.
You cannot go wrong with either tyre though to be fair (although different tyres perform differently on different cars, so you might want to check out make/model specific forums before deciding).
Honestly, if I had to buy 4 tyres tomorrow, I don't know which I'd choose between these or RS3.

If you go off the EU labelling results then the uniroyals have a better rating.
I have uniroyals on both my cars and find them perfect, living in the north the roads are usually wet/damp so good wet grip won it for us.
ollie87 to wadz03
9 Mar 171#28
Superior in the dry, no where near as good in the wet. Also their sidewalls aren't any where near as soft, which may give better response during turn-in.
My experience of these is they are a very soft compound, which is great in the summer as they're super sticky. Come winter or wet weather they're below average at best. You'll also burn through them at a fair rate too, with them being so soft.
fonzie2107 to wadz03

Having used both I prefer rain sports. The toyos are slightly better in the dry, but not by much.
The rain sports also seemed softer and more comfortable to me.

If you're fitting high performance summer tyres and expecting them to do anything in winter, you're doing it wrong. If you are fitting these then you probably want a second set of wheels with some winter tyres on for November-March.

Fit these to a decent performance car and they are good, had them on my old Focus ST and dry grip was excellent, wet grip was good enough for the conditions. Only lasted 5k miles on my ST though, although the crap Ford alignment and dodgy oil filled wishbone rubbers were more the reason for that!!

Have you checked whether a slightly different size is (a) suitable for your vehicle, and (b) also much cheaper?
Thanks, the winter wheels are 17" and 205/50R17 all round (Avon Ice Touring.) The summer tyres are 18"s - 215/40R18 front - expensive, so use 225/40R18 instead - and 245/35R18 on the rear. Currently on Bridgestone Potenza runflats which are horrible (far too stiff.)
Jules_HT
9 Mar 171#26
Why not just go 225 40 18 on the rear? The difference in rolling radius is less than half a cm (so the difference between new and used tyres).
Have tried RE050s before (not runflat, and not 18s, so a bit more compliant) and really liked them (particularly in the wet), £££ though.

Depends what you drive I guess, if you are putting 500nm through the rear tyres you need them to be the best you can. I only buy Michelin these days, but Good Year etc are all just as good.

£132 per tyre for me but if I select 45 instead of 50% profile then the price drops to £58.
The problem is that I just need fronts and I have 50s on the rear ....... it's ok to mix but I'd rather not.
vtec to stockdam
9 Mar 17#32
yes (the gap between arch and tyre will increase slightly and the 50s are slightly more comfortable)
Jules_HT to stockdam
9 Mar 17#43
As long as you're not mixing on the same axle it'll be fine. Bear in mind you're talking about 1cm difference in rolling radius (assuming we're talking 225s) with new tyres having about 8mm of tread (so as much as 6mm more than worn tyres); new 45 profile tyres will be within a few mm of the worn 50s you're taking off!
Your call but I know what I'd be doing (and it wouldn't be paying £132 a tyre)!

Hopefully BMW will sack their designer who came up with the concept of putting different size tyres on the rears. No doubt. Perhaps he or she is from the same family who thought a get you home kit instead of a spare wheel would be a good idea.

The Toyo Proxes used to be a popular choice but have been surpassed by newer tyres.
The Rainsports are superior imo, although have soft sidewalls.
I think the 225's were under £60 from ears or camskills.

dont get confused with toyo t1s tyres. These are one step down from r888's so unless you track your car occasionally or only use it in the summer, they aren't suitable as a daily year round tyre. Good price though!
danny2107 to cheeky_chops
9 Mar 171#37
They're more than 1 step down from the R888. They don't compare at all. R1R would be the next step from R888 if you look at it that way.

Used to buy these for my cars before baby no 1 turned up and I had to get something child friendly...
A very progressive tyre in terms of when the grip lets go (something ratings can't tell you) - I find they work particularly well in a RWD car giving you a very good sense of when the back end is going to completely let go.
Not especially hard wearing but reasonable. A great tyre in the dry, just OK in the wet and bloody awful in the snow.

Had these a few years ago on my 300BHP, 350ft/lb Legnum (they came with a set of Evo wheels) and they were OK but quite a soft compound. Traction and general grip was not a particular problem with any tyre I've used on this car but wear was noticably quicker with the Toyos. Personally I preferred Falken tyres for their longevity.
With my crappy 1.8 Focus anything goes as nothing seems to last on the front for more than about 4-6000 miles.
Not really a tyre required on your occasional-use shopping car but a well-loved and nostalgic choice for some maybe.
As others have said, there are better tyres out there but 'better' really depends on your requirements and your vehicle.
