Ah right, misinterpretation on my part it seems, I thought it was tied in with the release of the remastered version's release.

Wait. The Windows patch to make the game free for all was due March 30. It has been delayed. The Mac version is in progress and due after the Windows one.

Hmm, this is all confusing, I have a Mac and just want to play classic Starcraft online (dont have Windows atm) preferably for free, whats my option?
jsty3105
12 Apr 17#67
That's actually a reference to the remastered version not the now fabled 1.18 patch which would make Starcraft Anthology free for all
MisterTIBS
12 Apr 17#66
"Coming Summer 2017" - not sure it said that on the page before now, but certainly saying it now. Couple of months to go 'til then, I think.
I think Starcraft2 launch suffered from the same scenario, long delays, I think it was years

11 Apr 17#63
If you can't wait, there is the Starcraft Mass Recall mod for Starcraft 2 which reproduces all missions of starcraft and broodwar using the Starcraft 2 engine:
I mean to try it but haven't had time to just yet. I'm guessing it may be closer to the remastered than the original due to the higher resolution of the assets...

Not 'whining' about the delay in the game, my point was the 'deal' should be reintroduced when it is actually available because currently it is misleading (no fault of the deal poster).

Or just wait until everyone else has tested it for you and the final patch has been released.

As I understand it, they are still testing, the "1.18 PTR" (test version) can be downloaded. They are currently (1st April 2017) hunting down some bugs before the final free version (1.18) is released.
Totally happening, just not quite yet (they are running a little late, 2 days so far).
A clarifying post from the thread (PTR is the current test release, "Public Test Realm", SC:BW = StarCraft Brood War): us.battle.net/for…=27 "Yes in deed, the PTR is just a test for the 1.18 patch of SC:BW, that will improve the game on modern systems, fix bugs, and make it FREE TO PLAY. The game titled SC:Remastered (sc with hd graphics) is coming out on summer, u have to buy it to play. But on the other hand, you can just stick to the free SC:BW and play with Remastered players, because they are conected to the same engine."
Some publicity on this: pcgamer.com/bli…er/ "At the end of March, it will also roll out a new patch for StarCraft: Brood War, updating it to version 1.18. Once that goes live, StarCraft and the Brood War expansion will both be made free for everyone—not free-to-play, as Blizzard emphasized, but straight-up free." uk.pcmag.com/con…ree polygon.com/201…118 highsnobiety.com/201…rd/

OK what am I missing? Isn't this the game I played 20 years ago they are making available for free? What are these test releases about, surely there isn't still development on this and the new HD version is separate?
It didn't appear to happen yesterday. Ive seen nothing official from blizzard specifically saying yesterday. They just said "later this week". It's also possible they found an issue in the public test realm. All we can do is wait.

Hard for me to tell because I already own it in my Battle.net account, but trying to download it now gives me v1.15, so the patch can't have gone live yet.
However, if you're desperate, you can download a test version of v1.18 that was uploaded yesterday - us.battle.net/for…e=1

Yes, it will be on the Battle.net store. I won't be able to see how exactly you'll get it as I already own it on there. It does say it will coincide with the patch release, which hasn't happened yet, so I guess we're waiting for the US to wake up!

It is? The initial media reports weren't sure of the pricing.
Edit: Official PR from Blizzard indicates there's an undetermined price for the HD version - Blizzard is developing StarCraft: Remastered for release on Windows® and Mac® PCs, with an anticipated release date this summer. Pricing and related information on StarCraft: Remastered will be announced at a later date.

The HD remaster is also going to be free. It's not available until the summer, so this just seems to be Blizzard letting people get a gratis run at the original in the meantime.

I'm a huge RTS fan going back to Dune II, C&C, Age of Empires, etc. but the first Blizzard game I played was WarCraft III when that was first released. I didn't get around until playing StarCraft until Christmas of 2008 and then, when I was halfway through playing it, in January 2009 there was a new patch - for a game that came out in 1998. So I've always been pretty impressed with the longevity of the game and how well Blizzard have supported it over the years (I suppose the income they must have gotten from esports didn't hurt!). It still holds up really well and is totally playable in its original form, with no modern OS compatibilty issues, so no one has any excuse not to play it now! And the remaster looks tastefully done as well, just wonder how much it's going to be?
I own StarCraft Anthology, Diablo II and WarCraft III on Battle.net under Classic games. I don't think a remaster of WarCraft III is necessary yet - it still looks great and the textures hold up at higher resolutions. They could give Diablo II the same treatment as StarCraft though, that would be nice. But I'd settle for the digital re-release of the original Diablo and WarCraft + WarCraft II on Battle.net - no idea why they haven't done that.
