Fair enough. If money wasn't an issue, I too would probably prefer the convenience of not having to use an extra outlet for each external drive (having PS4 and Xbox One that means two needed) and they are a lot smaller but then buying the mains powered 3.5" drives usually gets you significantly more gigabytes to the pound, plus the possibility of larger capacities and slightly better performance (5400rpm vs 7200rpm).

Definitely pros and cons, for me the powered 3.5" Externals are the best option but I can see the appeal of the smaller 2.5"....

having bought a "faulty" 5TB i sent i back to Amazon, the lightning deal appeared a day or so later which took advantage of. i do have another 5TB which has been working for over a year

And just to follow up on this, having checked again, 7 out of the last 30 reviews on this version have been negative, with a lot of failures. That's a very high percentage for a drive like this and suggests poor design or manufacturing processes.

i'VE MANAGED TO MISS ALL OF THESE LIGHTNING DEALS SINCE BEFORE cHRISTMAS... IS THERE A WAY TO GET NOTIFIED OF THEM ?? (sorry about caps..) Ive wanted a couple of drives for ages (before Christmas) but cant afford to buy at current 'normal prices :/ looking for 2TB really but 4Tb at the right price is fine :smiley:

I do often look through them but very very rarely find anything of interest but have also had days where Ive looked through them then find there was a flash sale id missed some how :/

I ordered one of these and I wasn't really bothered by the recent reviews as I own quite a lot of both the 4TB and 5TB versions of these drives (six 5TB drives and four or six (I lost count ) 4TB drives). All have been fine, some used internally but most used externally. The only problem I ran into was in late 2013 when a 4TB drive and its three Amazon replacements failed hard drive tests, I eventually gave up and purchased the same drive from PC World, which was and still is fine.

Well, today I received my drive and I started my normal run of tests before use, the first passes, the second passes but the third seems to be hanging, at which point I was expecting a problem. I then had to forcefully end the program and after updating it, I tried again, this time the drive failed on the short generic test :disappointed::

I've requested a return and replacement, which I'm sort of regretting, I think there's a good chance the replacement will fail, if it does, I'll return it for a refund.

That's strange a similar thing happened to me today. However I closed down, connected it to a different USB port and then ran the Short Generic test again and this time it passed all phases.

I then noticed that Seatools had discovered my disk twice - once as NA8FB and also NA8FB3TQ - so I did the test on that as well and it again passed.

I also did a Windows scan disk and no errors.

I ran the test a few times and it still failed. I always run tests with both Seatools and Data Lifeguard (Western Digital) regardless of the hard drive manufacture, out of curiosity I ran the short test with Data Lifeguard and surprisingly it passed.

Today I received the replacement drive and it also failed :disappointed: lol, I think there must be a problem with the current batch of 4TB drives, both boxes have a date of manufacture of 12/2016. Just last month I ordered two 5TB drives both of which passed all tests (date of manufacture 11/2016). Rather than risk any more 4TB drives I'll wait until the 5TB drives drop in price and buy a couple.

That's all very interesting, and it may well explain the high number of failure reported on Amazon. Why can't these companies do their own testing instead of expecting buyers to do it for them? That's why we lost the UK motor industry.

Strange - did you try just a simple Windows disk check?

Just an update to my post at #22. I realised that after the first failure I had moved the drive to USB 2 whereas it was originally connected to USB3.

I have now changed it back to USB3 (a different port than the first one) and it has passed the test again - although when I plugged it in Windows took an age to find it and show it in "my PC".

My DOM is also 11/2016 and the firmware version is 9401

I think it would too time consuming, the long generic test takes hours and there would only
be a small percentage of bad drives found (in comparison to total output), it's probably cheaper to pay out for returns/replacements than employ people to test the drives with software.

Given the increase of bad reviews and the two drives I've received, I would say it's most likely a bad batch.
Yesterday I took a screen shot of the Seagate folder (first drive I received) for the date and time, the date is 19/12/2016 and the time is: 04:24 The replacement drive has the same date: 19/12/2016 and the time is: 04:25, a difference of one minute. Unlike the other visible files (same date and time because they are used by all expansion drives) the Seagate folder has it's own unique file written to the drive, it's a xml file containing the drive serial number for use in registration, the date and time being so close means the drives are from the same batch/run.

I didn't, if it wasn't new I would have been checking it with everything. I've already wrapped up the replacement drive otherwise I would check it now.


I would be a little concerned with it failing once and Windows not showing it as fast as normal. Have you run the long generic test?

I forgot to add both the drives I received failed during the first percent of the "Inner Scan" stage of the short generic test.

My Seagate folder is 26/10/16 01.53 - all the other file dates are the same.

I'll try the longer test tomorrow.
