Far too much money for a phone. When did they become too expensive? I think anything over £300 is too much.

On TCB is states £75 for "Samsung S8 & S8 Plus New Contracts and Upgrade Pre-Orders".

This is Sim Free so don't think it qualifies.

That's more or less what I expected to hear. Quality optimisation from Google, kind of makes me wish they had gotten into making their own phone long before I moved to iOS. Lol your anecdote with the Samsung does not surprise me in the slightest. Its truly tragic because Samsung would be unstoppable if they collaborated with Google like they did for the Galaxy Nexus. Best hardware and best optimised software.

Lol I agree. It must be seriously broken for them to not bother launching it out of the box. Never stopped them before though...yeah there is a hardware button for Bixby but it can be reprogrammed for anything.

No major glitches with the Pixel - I'm struggling to think of any 'glitches'. Battery is very good and almost as important it's honest. My old phone(Samsung, sigh) misreported the charge left. At 20% on the Samsung you wouldn't be able to spend 15 minutes surfing before it would be on 10%. At 10% you would be literally a couple of minutes from it turning off. On the Pixel, like my works iPhone, 20% is still hours from hutting down. Overnight the Pixel uses staggering little charge overnight - perhaps a percent or two.
I've had this since launch and there isn't much to say about it other than it's smooth and it does what you want.

P.S Bixby isn't shipping with the S8's now. Not ready(it must really be not ready cos it doesn't usually stop them). There is going to be a hardware button for something that isn't there.

I'd even agree to an extent with you. How's your battery life on it and software? Any glitches or issues? Its funny because I've always admired Google keyboard and think it superior to iOS keyboard which is a little outdated with no swipe option. Lol how I wish Siri was that competent. She is useless in doing anything right or quickly in my car. Google NOW on the other hand made me love my Note 5 even more. A true enhancement, and legal! Google assistant just expands on this but is only available on android 7.0 above. Loads of handsets will miss out.

The pixel? Yeah it's great, all the things it does it does very well. If i could take something from the iPhone it would be the keyboard, it's better on the iPhone. I use Google assistant all the time, for the simple stuff. If you tell it to phone somewhere you don't know like 'Newbank Garden Centre' or 'Costco manchester' it doesn't matter that you don't have the number in your phone - it just rings them. It doesn't look it up and you have to press a button, it just does it. There may be loads of New bank garden centres in the uk but it rings the one near to you.
Also, if you have an incoming call Google looks up the number and if it can match it to a business the business is displayed instead of the number. That's Google assistant though, most androids have it now i suppose.
Id describe it as very solid, like the iPhone, but better - ha ha! I would say that though

Undoubtably there's plenty I'd love my iPhone to do which my Android phones could do. Quick charging for one. The screens are for me, the best on the market. You just can't beat them. So responsive, so solid, so bright and colour accurate. Android can't beat em. I agree. Apple starts from the top in making sure iOS takes every advantage of the hardware and doesn't matter which side of the fence you sit, you can only praise that. Again, I whole-heartedly agree. Notifications are a complete joke on iOS. Its the only thing drawing me back to Android. Its unreal how bad Apple got this simple function. I preferred them on iOS 9. How is the Pixel? I do follow it and find it relatively appealing. Its incredibly simple and functional. Even seems iOS-esque in how there are relatively little hardware and software issues surrounding it aside from the lens glare.

Yeah Samsung have a history doing this. Adding incomplete features which make no difference to the user experience. Smart Stay anyone? I don't even bother with Siri, who is incompetent to say the least forget Bixby. There's only two people that ever got close to doing voice assistants even remotely right and that's Google and BlackBerry. I still look jealously at Android users because Google Now is so unbearably better than Siri and works perfectly in cars. Its at that point I wake Siri from her slumber and remind her that she's a piece of ****.

They did try 'Google editions' of other phones like the S4, HTC etc. They never took off sadly and even with stock android still faced software delays compared to Nexuses. I wished they had stuck it out. Its sad but true, Samsung have overtaken HTC as the best hardware manufacturer. Anyone that doesn't use a circular finger print sensor needs a slap. Its obviously the best way forward. I know people that swear by Samsung but I'd put them in the same category as a lot of iPhone users. They are so used to one way of doing everything that they can't see past their tried and tested method. Everything is inferior to their Samsung.

Actually I know that other OEMs have gone against removable batteries but the fact is that this discussion relates directs to Samsung and indirectly to Apple. Not against them investing in waterproof phones, if anything I love and encourage it. Its the next best selling feature for the standard consumer. FYI I owned a Note 5 and it was/is superb. I will however reserve my right to disagree with your comment about Samsung being a class beyond any other. The high resolution displays sap battery like nothing else and at a glance there is no discernible difference between the displays of my iPhone and Note 5. The only difference is that one has a display which rinses the battery no matter the resolution and the others doesn't seem to.

I've not owned a Xiaomi or Huawei phone so I'm happy to accept your opinion on Samsung being a step ahead of them. I however do not think that will last. They are both heavily driven and motivated to succeed and have great following in Asia and emerging markets.
Wolfylee
8 Apr 17 #332
I totally agree with all this. There are certain things that iPhones don't do that make them for me, untenable but the quality is there. The screens are, resolution aside, superb - very close to the glass, responsive etc - and that is without using OLED technology. Apple wring every last bit out of the hardware they use and they might add stuff you don't need but they don't add gimmicks that don't actually work. The exception being notifications which, compared to Android, are a joke. For my work I was issued an iPhone 6 - its still very, very smooth but had it been a nearly three year old Samsung I suspect it would have been smashed against a wall. Personally I've got a Pixel, it's not perfect but I'm very happy with it.
In my experience with Samsung, who seem the most cynical of all the major hardware manufacturers, they add 'features' simply for the headlines and literally don't care if it works or not. I'd be suspicious of Bixby. I remember S-Voice being touted in the same way Bixby is now, anyone use s-voice for more than a day or so? Doubt it, it rarely ever worked, for me at least.
What's suprising is that Samsung have THE BEST hardware, no question. My Pixel Xl couldn't touch an S8(arguably an S7) for hardware. If Samsung were to release a vanilla or google phone I'd be all over it but every year, don't know about the S8 yet, they make a phone that is compomised by the software. They want to constantly monetise by adding ****-poor implementations of app stores, voice search, browsers, music stores etc.

The reviews always seem to be glowing - which in the past I've fallen for but have baffled me after only a week of use. How could they not notice the lag? Why does it take so long for the screen to come on after pressing the power button? How can the keyboard be behind what I'm typing with nothing else going on?

I also have friends that like Samsungs so who knows.

...and why isn't their fingerprint button round? Are they nuts?

8 Apr 17 #331
So Samsung is the only one that went away from removable batteries? Also, you do know that iPhone 7 has exactly the same design along with any waterproof phone. Both giants decided to invest in waterproof phones for a reason. Of course that means that to fix the phone you would need to replace front and back sides which is quite costly. To me Samsung phones are a class beyond any other, definitely a class beyond iPhones. Being an owner of both a Huawei and a Samsung I can tell you that the difference is enormous. Build quality, speed, software, camera, design superior in almost every aspect, except battery that comes at a cost when you're using a 2.5k amoled or 3k infinity display.

People who comment on Samsung's new generation phones need to own one before comparing it to any other.

No I don't think they will either. Maybe not because of the marketing but more so because their software is just simply too unsophisticated, they have no physical stores and their customer service is nowhere near Apples. Samsung have, to me that is, betrayed their loyal customers. Expensive hardware and cheap software. That was, is and will continue to be true of their products. They've gone backwards in many areas than forwards, like pricing and like you've mentioned. No removable battery which makes fixing their phones more difficult. No expandable memory, and to compensate, expensive upgrades in memory. Huawei aren't just better value imo, they're better full stop. Better battery, almost equal on the design, slightly behind on camera and software but closing up fast. They are a much needed breath of fresh area in the Android world which has grown stale with poor products from HTC and Motorola. I agree, Samsung should go back to basics. I would have thought that following Apple would mean, less features but higher quality in the ones they do put in.

6 Apr 17 #328
I agree, and i don't think Samsung will ever attain the "status" phenomena like Apple have as their marketing focuses heavily on it, it only seems to appeal to a select group of people.
Samsung have played a risky game by following Apples lead in recent times, like removing the micro SD slot and sealing in the battery, both of which have had disastrous results!
And with their pricing going in the same direction as Apples, they're leaving a huge gap open for the third largest selling manufacturer Huawei to slip in and capitalise.
Samsung should stop trying to become the new Apple and focus on offering the best vale for money cutting edge products like they used to.
kwl147
6 Apr 17 #327
You might be right but by that analysis, that'll be never. Its far too much of an intellectual standpoint to expect the majority to reach. Some people can't see past consumerism and materialism. In fairness, there's little a smartphone can't do or certainly in my experience I've found this to be the case with my iPhone and Android. I'm starting to wonder if the 'status' phenomena can also be linking with say Samsung or Pixel phones because they too are becoming incredibly expensive.

6 Apr 17 1 #326
What you say makes no sense and makes the rest of us that own iPhones, look like utter morons. Androids aside from Samsung, haven't lagged in years. The Pixel and HTC being almost iPhone like in how smooth and slick they are. Numerous developers have told me Android is safer than iOS ironically. They tell me iOS is incredibly easy to get into as opposed to Android. Not sure how true that is but its more true coming from developers than a troll.

I've got the s7 edge which is a marvellous phone. The new s8 looks good, but the s8 plus looks very large. I'll need to do a direct comparison in store. Music playback on the 7 edge is inferior to the s6 edge plus but video playback is outstanding. It's screen is light years above the latest iPhone. I can't remember it's name. I don't know how people put up with the iPhones low quality screen( by Samsung standards) I suppose people buy iPhones for reasons other than quality ( showing off. As if anyone cares)
I'm a massive fan of Samsung phones and apple tablets. The new s8 looks very good and won't cost me any more than my current contract.

No because it's beyond stupid. If you wanna talk about "two year" old specs. Let's compare the camera, security updates, updates in general, privacy, processor, battery life, storage speed, quality of apps, tight integration, consistency among different iOS devices, world class support... But I like being shallow and spending money on new toys.
It's one of the joys of living in the free world, helping the economy by buying stuff I don't really need but really want.

... and if I wanted an unappealing mediocre Chinese phone, that all you 'discerning' people are apparently so delighted with you spend hours on every mobile phone post trying to convince everyone else (and probably yourself tbh) how great they are, I'd buy one... I don't, I want ostentatious, cutting edge, shallow shiny things.

It's not that simple. In fact, in this case you are completely wrong.
Here we see the Note 5 with the same screen size and pixel density. It has a more efficient CPU & a smaller battery (450mAh smaller)and it clearly bests the 6P in every single test.

Thanks HUKD - a true money saving site. I've saved £689 by simply not buying this. Also got a speaker-sized extra bit of room in my house not being cluttered up too. Awesome. :smirk:

People saying they simply *must* have this and wetting themselves over it... really? My current phone is less than a quarter of the price of this and does everything this thing does. OK the camera lets my phone down a little, but only in dark conditions. I'm more than happy to live with that aspect given the price differential. I can buy an SLR and still be better off! And it may not be as lightning fast, but it's not laggy at all. Oh, but it does have a big screen and 4000mAh battery which lasts all day.
I guess if you're one of the herd, you'll get this regardless, echoes of iSheep spring to mind. But the Chinese phones which are apparently so dodgy are a real presence and enlightened people are cottoning on. Only by switching to the more competitive offerings (which are still excellent in terms of build quality and value for money) will the large manufacturers take heed and adjust their pricing accordingly. But then some people like the "premium" brands in some sort of bragging right/appendage swinging type competition...

Well, that sort of transparent shallowness costs a lot of money, doesn't it?!

I've not actually voted either way, it might be a fantastic "deal" compared to other places, but as one poster said - it's just too much money and that's nailed the "must have" mentality of folks who are sustaining the ludicrous price.

Apologies, I didn't turn up here to sound off, I'm normally a cheerful person!

(Previously HUKD has had me part with cash for ZTE Blade, HTC Evo 3D, Nexus 4 and now a Redmi Note 3 Pro Prime (Kate) with all the UK bands.)

Yep - I watch Louis Rossman regularly. He gets **** with Apple because he's made a living repairing their products, and now they're making it increasingly hard for him to do so, so it's understandable he's pretty bitter towards them.

I still don't understand the desire to solder everything to the logic board (SSD, RAM, etc) - it saves the most miniscule amount of space, at the expense of making it impossible to repair the machine inexpensively. It's completely indefensible.

Its also a kind of thing to have to mark your 'status' if you think about it. Its a very hipster and social thing to do. Apple are supported everywhere, they rarely do things by half measure. They have accessories in abundance, a high rate of success when it comes to security and software. Google are getting on the train with the Pixels but they are too late and have too little experience in making phones physically.

I guess in societies that are geared to long hours and being productive as possible, people like things that are simple, easy to use and get results. My nephew and niece are 6 and 3. They can use an iPhone/iPad with ease. My parents are both over 50 and can use the iPad. I tried desperately to get them to use the nexus and they just couldn't do it for whatever reason.

Apple are not so divided now in terms of their resources and clearly focus on specific markets like the Pro market for their laptops. They were undeniable kings of quality and power, now you can't really say that about the new stuff. Its all for hipsters imo.

I just think as disappointing it is that they've effectively abandoned the desktop market, its to be expected. They just don't sell enough of them to make further investment worthwhile. Like any company out there, they seek to maximise profits otherwise there is no reason for them to exist.

You obviously know more about technology than the average Apple customer, so you can see both sides of the debate.
I agree that brand reputation is Apples number one priority and they will do anything in their power to protect that.
I also agree that most of their customers aren't interested in tinkering, modding or overclocking their devices which is why their marketing has been so successful, because they keep it simple.
But they do charge way more than it's worth imo.
I don't know if you've heard of "Louis Rossmann" or seen any of his youtube video's, but he actually makes a living from repairing Apple products and even he goes off on Apple despite the fact that, it is his source of income.
If you have had any common faults with any of your products, i'm sure he's diagnosed it at some point.

That's kind of what I was trying to get at. Samsung make the screen but the technology behind them i.e. the software, how the OS uses the display etc is all Apple's handy work.

I want to be clear.. despite being an iPhone owner, and owning a lot of Apple hardware, my enthusiasm for them has nose dived in recent years and I've definitely began to lean more to the cynical side. Their complete abandonment of the desktop market in recent years, the neglect of their Pro customers, all in the pursuit of selling little trinkets like the Apple Watch have left a very sour taste in the mouth.. they're just not the same company any more.

But.. a few points to clear up. Their products aren't incompatible with other brands as such, though you could look at it that way. I think it comes down to control. Ensuring the quality of the ecosystem through specific licensed products, rather than allowing any old company to manufacture garbage which could potentially damage the brand. It's all about protecting the image / reputation of the brand.

Android is supported aftermarket through enthusiast forums and custom ROM's but that's far more in depth than the average consumer is willing to go with their product. Love it or hate it (and I can tell you're a tech enthusiast) most people just don't care that much. Even as someone who's worked in IT for decades, I can tell you now that even I don't care that much.. I've gone through the fun of custom firmware on Android devices, and sideloaded new firmware before it got pushed out OTA, etc - but I've sort of gotten to the point where I have other stuff in my life I care about more now, so I just want my stuff to work..

Yeah, antennagate was a joke.. and indeed Apple's attitude to certain defects with their hardware has been pretty inexcusable. Their (hideously dated, and in dire need of a hardware refresh) "flagship" desktop product the Mac Pro is plagued with issues around the GPU and I read of people going through multiple hardware replacements with Apple trying to fix them.. it always seems to be around GPU's, as people had issues with them on old MacBook's, etc and they always seem to refuse to accept there's a wider issue and just recall them.

1. "people buy into the brand" Agree
2. "world class customer service" not sure if you would still get that service if their pricing was as low as most of their competitors, again you've already paid for it, and if you're constantly relying on customer service, what does that say about the quality and reliability of the product ?
3. "regular updates" Agree but that's because with Apple there's only one brand of device whereas with Android, there are hundreds
4. "great security" it's not unknown for Apple devices to get viruses too, so i tend to disagree with that
5. "resale values" Agree, but that's artificial because it's overhyped.
6. "but they're generally faster and three years down the line have barely lost any speed or usability" Agree, but Android has not been optimised for 1 device but still has far more customisation and features, which puts more of a load onto the hardware and despite this, it still performs remarkably well under the circumstances.
But at the end of the day, i believe that iOs and Android device owners are two different kinds of users.
iOS device owners generally just adapt to their devices as they aren't aware of the full capabilities of a modern day smartphone and for that reason will always be blissfully happy (at least until they find out)
Android device owners are generally more tech literate and are aware of most if not all of the capabilities of a modern day smartphone and are more demanding and always expecting more.
tom_g
31 Mar 17 #257
I'd argue that iPhones value isn't necessarily artificially high, people buy into the brand, world class customer service, regular updates, great security, resale values, great UI (in my opinion). People bang on about the specs, but lets face it, they refine their systems so well that with less specs you're getting consistently better/similar levels of performance. People similarly bang on about MacBook pro's being under-specked when compared with other brands - but they're generally faster and three years down the line have barely lost any speed or usability. I wouldn't class myself as a fanboy, I just want products that perfect very well on a long term and consistent basis.

I understand what you're trying to say, but can you not see that the only reason people are sticking with Apple is because they're already heavily invested in them and Apple has secured their custom by making all their products incompatible with any other brand.
Yes their marketing has been successful, but when you look at the average iPhone customers tech literacy, you soon realise that it's more like taking candy from a baby, not really rocket science.
With regards to updates, the beauty of Open Source means that most high end Android devices are supported by the Android community despite lack of support from manufacturers and anyway lack of updates does not mean a device automatically stops working, i've proved that with my 3+ year old Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
I would have considered giving Apple some credit if they played fairly but they don't, when something goes wrong with their products, they blame the customer for not using it correctly (Antennagate), i'm sorry but i just can't trust a company like that.
With Apples record profits, do you really think they need any more credit ? lol

31 Mar 17 1 #254
They take the majority of global smartphone profits for several reasons.. one, the phones generally work very well, so they get repeat custom from the same people. They're reliable, well featured, and the ecosystem and interplay between other Apple hardware is very good. The very 'walled garden' system you bemoan is what a lot of people want. Plus you get software updates for years - they're still updating the iPhone 4S which came out in 2011! I'm not sure there's ANY Android handsets still receiving security and feature updates this long after release, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

But the other reason is they've become a desirable 'brand' purely through marketing. Personally I hate marketing and brands generally, but have to hand it to Apple as they've cracked it.. and as a result people want to own their stuff for no other reason than it's Apple.

I realise I'm probably wasting my breath here as, reading your posts, you seem blinkered towards Android only and can't give Apple an ounce of credit..

My Note 3 is still going strong, but i'm also waiting for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, after Samsung disappointed me with the Notes 5 and 7, so i decided to get the Huawei Honor Note 8 in the meantime and so far i'm quite impressed considering the £388 price tag!
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a great choice of phone by the way.
C0mm0n_Sense
31 Mar 17 1 #252
And that's exactly how they remain in business by taking the majority of global smartphone profits, they hold their customers to ransom. because they know well that they cannot compete technologically, that's why they deliberately make their products incompatible with any other brand of product and try to block sales of their competitors products by suing them.

You mention "world class service" but you don't seem to realise that you've already paid up front for that service when you buy an iPhone.
In the over 3+ years i've owned my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, i have never once needed any kind of service, and that goes the same for two of my other mates that own the same model phone.
I personally would rather pay less for the device and not require any service than pay more and depend on it.

Now hoping the note 8 knocks it out the park BUT the Galaxy X looks to be a foldable phone which would mean the note 9 next year will also be foldable.
I get the note 8 this year or hold out for note 9? and settle for a note 4 in between.

It's not just about battery capacity that determines how long the device will last between charges. The CPU, GPU, radio and screen will all be more power efficient than the previous versions.

Android also gets updated with new power saving features each version.

... I've just been playing with one at Samsung this evening, it's an absolute thing of beauty. The screen is insanely cool, noticably better than the S7, the soft buttons and UI are brilliant, it's very small in the hand to what I was expecting and both cameras are superb. I love the new screen ratio too, it's surprisingly different than 16:9.
An absolute beast of a phone... and I'm not a Samsung obsessive, been using LG for years tbh.

G4 for sub-100? I just sold mine with a smashed screen for £90 so good luck with that one.

Like I said, it's not an issue as found Samsung's customer service quite good. But if I did have a problem then I can just go over to any other manufacturer (barring Apple) and I would keep everything I have ever purchased (music, videos, cloud storage and apps). Switching is as simple as logging in on the new device.

Unfortunately if Apple upset you, it's like a messy divorce. They practically own everything, including your soul!

Im totally against how they operate and believe that's why they charge an unjustified premium. Users are practically held hostage and worryingly they are getting more aggressive in this area. If you don't believe me then read up on the real reasons for scrapping the aux port.

Its total madness as let's be honest, a £300 oneplus 3 does everything an iPhone 7 does and more!

Tbh I have never really had a problem with Samsung but if I did I would vote with my feet. As Android is open I could choose pretty much any handset manufacturer and moving to a new phone is seamless (I keep all of my apps, music, pictures etc)

That's my biggest gripe with Apple, if they upset you or ramp up their prices then you are scuppered. They own the os, they own all of your music, your apps... everything, essentially they own you!

Well as I said above, I tend to justify it as '£2-3 a day over a year' which equates to a coffee or beer. And with the iPhone, you do get better resell value (fact) and Apple Stores do just offer better support in the event you need it.

About the best thing I can say about my iPhone 7 is, I almost forget to worry about it because it is so dependable - it may be boring but it is tried and tested.

Just an FYI, this phone is massive. I would recommend anyone go and take a look in person at the phone before dropping £689 on it; as a Galaxy user for sometime, it is vastly different to my S6 and S7. You can't operate the whole length of the phone with just one hand and your thumb, which has really put me off. The screen is unbelievable though, amazing quality!
Leonintelex
30 Mar 17 #216
Fair enough but this is on another level to the iPhone 7. The iPhone 8 will inevitably be more expensive, they always try to price their handsets higher than competitors, it adds perceived value. Apple are marketing masterminds.

It also certainly won't be the last time Apple will be in your wallet, over the life of the phone they probably fleece you for 3 x the handsets value.

But, everyone to their own.

I know you are a Samsung diehard (!), you slammed me in another thread for dumping my S7 Edge and going to iPhone

But my S7 Edge broke through nothing of my own fault, and Samsung's support was rubbish. I still have a Tab S2 in my desk drawer at work that they won't fix (they've sent it back twice, still broken). And when my S7 Edge worked, I thought it was great and probably would still do if it hadn't failed.

I agree the S8 isn't worth the extra right now, I will probably get another S7 Edge as my second phone sometime. Even the S6 would've done me, but the waterproofing and expandable memory is important.

Funny you should say that, I usually go Apple but this time I waited for the S8. But due to the price I'm sticking with Apple. If it was cheaper i'd have gone for the Samsung, not paying more for it than an iPhone that in my opinion, just does everything I need and does it very well.

Because Apple charge a higher price (and have for years) but use 2 year old tech. They also control every aspect of the os limiting choice and competition by forcing people to use their ecosystem.

Thist is why they only have a paltry 14% market share yet suck up 90% of the profits.

Genius from a business perspective, but from a consumer perspective...they have your pants down.

At least after I have purchased an S8 my money can be spent wherever I want moving forward.

Increasingly there's a sizeable market gap for quality phones in the £300 to £500 range. OnePlus are obviously in that sector but even they bumped up the price of the 3T and you'd expect their next phone to be more expensive again.

Samsung are just as bad, if not worse!

I'm so tempted to order this as contract up for renewal but genuinely concerned about battery life.

I've had an s6 edge for the last two years and it struggles to make a day, if it's like that then I'm out. On the flipside 10nm is a lot more efficient so it could actually be good.

I think I'll wait for the reviews before I take the plunge.

But saying that, what is the alternative right now? All other phones look lackluster in comparison or are quite dated.

Well I've had a day with itntoday and have to say I'm not that impressed. The plus has the strangest proportions ever and the fingerprint scanner is unusable due to how high it is.Camera is brilliant and the overall speed very quick. In all not that much different from the s7 edge and very pricey.I miss the menu button but the flick up the screen to access the menus is a nice trick and swipe down to close. Craftsmanship on the phone is excellent and feels a quality phone but worth the extra I just Don't think so.For those who have money and like great tech just dip in.The free speaker is pretty pants and no way worth £99 more like £39.99.Ill be buying the plus with staff discount and a trade in so not too much for me.

This is SUCH a good point, the raft of sub £250 phones from Xiaomi that have amazing specs for such a little amount of money is something Samsung and the like are gonna need to sit up and take note of, especially if they launch worldwide, pair that with a £20 sim, job done!

Your phone uses a very old SD810 SoC ... it isn't very efficient compared to the new SD835/Exynos 9.
The S8 has the option to run at different screen resolution. I believe Samsung started using Vulkan api for their UI, so this should offer better battery usage.

There's no justice in paying £700+ for a mobile phone, I really think Apple & Samsung should be made to cap there phone prices at £400 (max) sim free. Well they want to increase the average selling price as a premium product. getting caught at the lower end they will get caught with the el cheapo Chinese phone makers who will be happy to operate on thinner margins and if you try to compete with them you will lose. with these premium phones you are talking about a £40-50 a month contract price over the 24months with data.

It really makes little sense now to be 'up to date' with phones.

A Galaxy S6 for example is now incredible value, you would be hard pushed to justify the price tag of this phone against it.

The fact it also by default is set to 1080p for screen resolution should be a huge red flag for battery life.

Edit: Also - please stop using 12mp cameras! Seriously who enjoys shooting in 4:3 ratio. I know the camera is better for low light, but in daylight the S6 is still better, for night pictures just turn on the flash.

This times 100

That's the problem with phones. The cooler and lighter and more fragile they become, the more reason you have to use a case with it.

I had the same problem with my HTC M8 a few years ago. Looked gorgeous out of the box but the material it was made from made it scratch easily and was super slippy. So you pay extra for a sexy phone and end up putting it into a big rubber case.

That being said, I think the S8 looks like a good phone.

A few things are putting me off it.

First is battery life. All my friends who have the Samsung S6 or S7 complain about battery life and by the sounds of it they have kept down the "Slim is Sexy" route and forgot about the biggest problem with their phone.

Second is bloatware. One of the reasons battery and performance is affected is because Samsung put lots of annoying Samsung apps that cannot be removed.

Lastly is the fingerprint reader. Could they find a more awkward position?

I have a Google 6P and the the position of the fingerprint reader is perfect. If they removed the front hardware buttons they should have followed Google's lead or placed it on the power button.

As usual Samsung will optimize the OS and apps at the start. After one year you phone will start to crawl as they never put effort to optimize the OS for old devices.. just send upgrades and make it slow... This does not happen to other manufacturers, so i beleive Samsung is doing it deliberately like Apple.

Display is rendered at 1080p, so won't make much of a difference. With Samsung's advancements on AMOLED, I imagine this will still offer as good/better battery life than the S7 (which was still really good). I remember when the Note4 came out - the screen drew less power than the Note 3 display, even though the resolution was ~80 percent higher!

Is been Samsung Galaxy since the S3 to the current S7 Edge.

For me Samsung lots the plot is staying power after the S4, they just obsessed with new rather than perfect.

The S7 Edge is awesome but battery life is poor, updates are slow and I find the edge tricky to work with as you always inadvertently Touch the edge of the screen just holding the phone only resolved using a case.

The S8 has an even edgier screen so will be a nightmare to hold, Bixby I dunno if it's another S Voice disaster, desktop pc well I can screen mirror and use a BT Keyboard and do the same, battery size is the Samsung and they gave some Dreadful PR saying after a year S7 battery is out 80% good but wow the S8 will by 90 % - did I miss something or did they just admit the battery degrades 20% within a year !!!.

I might go for it on a contract deal with good Cashback.

I'm still enjoying my OnePlus One (Chinese) which battery lasts throughout the day, and is incredibly fast. The camera is the only disappointing part in darker scenes but not worth upgrading as no other problems whatsoever. My family mainly have the higher spec Motorola phones and find them great, with one person going for the Lenovo P9 from a Samsung S5. The point being, all these phones are fantastic. As I am sure this one is - and I don't deny that. But to claim the Chinese phones or cheaper phones are poor or have a distinctly worse experience is fundamentally false. As the other person is hinting at, this is better (Or should be for £689!!!!), but it's not that much better.

I didn't start this conversation, I just felt the need to reply arguing that they for some weird reason break down quickly or have loads of faults. They don't catch fire either  (Sorry! :stuck_out_tongue: )

Completely not true. Brands like Huweai, Lenovo are fantastic. They don't give in within a week and last for several years. If you want longer support, a Motorola offers that. But the Chinese brands don't stop working 3 weeks down the line, or anywhere like 1 year either.

Or buy a new Chinese phone in 3 years time. You're likely to replace the S8 in 3 or 4 years anyway. Even if you keep the S8 for 8 years, you can have 3 brand new Chinese phones in that time.

I had a nightmare with my 6p, kept turning off at about 20 percent battery. After a few returns they acknowledged a problem and gave me an s7 edge for free. Class phone and even though the battery is smaller it kicks the **** off my 6p

And as for the battery complaint, you need to be directing your anger to the major battery manufacturer's not towards phone manufacturers. Quick charge anyway has been a great innovation that helps a lot.

by the way the apple post on here has a 150 pound discount and its freezing cold.apple will need to catch up or they will lose even more of the smartphone market.the samsung note fiasco is a distant memory

Anyone know of anywhere to grab one of these with a student discount card maybe? Looking to buy sim free but sounds like cashback may not qualify.
ihatebingo to BazingaBen

i agree ben looks like cashback is a blank theres about a month until this hits the shops.im just going to sit back and see all the providers and phone sites grind as much and good deals as they can until i make my mind up.

the phone is sex on wheels not much extra performance which is a downer to me but ive just got to have it.

In my experience with Samsung phones, the nifty sounding features they add in, like iris scanning, smart scroll, smart pause etc only work properly about 20% of the time - meaning they never get used. I'll never be fooled again.
Lovely hardware, no question - the best probably. Usually a lacklustre implementation - fingers crossed for this one.

GPUs generally don't get used much for day to day tasks.... but graphics intensive gaming does draw more power though

heat missed the live feed but heat anyway been waiting sooooooooo long for this and they managed to do away with the home key which was under debate.
Firefly1
29 Mar 17 #19
True, but it does generally draw more power. After all, companies do not double the GPU/CPU components due to the power drain on the battery (and heat sink issues). Chances are the battery will be very similar or 5-10% better than the S7. We will have to wait and see to be sure either way.

2 things about this comment:

Would it be bundled with it, if it couldn't use it.

Which ones? It's all relative.

Old one or new one.....?
baldude
29 Mar 17 1 #16
Performance improvement in GPU need not necessarily draw more power...
VenusProject
29 Mar 17 1 #15
The S8 has a headphone jack and will come bundled with a pair of Harman AKG headphones worth £90
Firefly1
29 Mar 17 #14
However they have increased the CPU/GPU workpower by 10-20%. So they save battery using 10nm, but likely some of that will be eaten up by the GPU/CPU changes.

On TCB is states £75 for "Samsung S8 & S8 Plus New Contracts and Upgrade Pre-Orders".

This is Sim Free so don't think it qualifies.
