Foreword: Hi guys, I have been looking for a new phone for the last two weeks. Been thinking about Moto Z. Something about the Moto Z didn't feel right for me, so I was looking further. Honor 8 for £299... well it is nice, however, I will still want to have something better. Today I came across the following deal. I know this is not the cheapest ever, however, I think this phone is worth 351 and new Galaxy S8 once introduced at the ridiculous price of £800 will still make people go for S7e. I believe S7 edge will do just fine for the next two years.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge - Like New, Perfect

Go for the 5GB deal with £39 upfront and £39 monthly
Airtime - £26
Device plan - £13
The phone element of contract is £13/month x 24=£312
plus the £39 you paid upfront.
Total: 312 + 39 = 351

Step by step guide for this deal (I copied it from one of the previous posts.)

1) Get the deal.

2) Receive your phone and sim card.

3) Put the sim card into your phone and go onto myO2 (app or website) and from there request the unlock code.

4) Call 202 from the same sim card as it will make things much easier, go straight to the I want to leave o2 department or something like that (I think it's thinking of leaving us? Press something) as that will connect you with the right people much quicker.

5) Tell the person you want to pay your device in full and cancel the airtime. They will ask you why, tell them you don't think the airtime is a good value for money, but you want to keep the phone because you think it's an outstanding value for money. They will ask you for card details, you tell those details and that's it, they cancel it for you in about an hour.

6) You own the phone from that point, assumed that you have done this straightaway, there won't be any charges, otherwise, you will have to pay as much airtime as you have used.

7) Unlock code will come through in about 2 to 48 hours.

Why would anyone gimp a high end smartphone by using it with a screen protector? If the screen can't last without one when used casually with a decent cover or case then surely it isn't fit for purpose?

My S7 Edge lasted all of 2 months! But I do miss that spectacular camera, and would buy another at the right price. I think TouchWiz made it feel a lot more sluggish than it should though.

I have been looking and cannot find the combination you're suggesting. Are you sure it hasn't changed or isn't for 'perfectly fine' condition (e.g. Grade B/C)?

Did you deliberately write it like a child? My S7 Edge suffered the dark lines fault with the AMOLED, it's a widely documented issue and all over the web. Samsung wanted my phone for 2-3 weeks and wouldn't replace it with a new one so I would end up with a £700 refurb or repaired handset. The phone was mint condition, not a scratch on the body or glass.

I appreciate the honesty. I hope it works well for you. In my case, I have been waiting for nearly two weeks for the right deal and never considered S7e. I know that some people wait longer, however the ones that do definitely can afford the wait. I do not want to be clicking refresh on pages over and over again taking the focus away from other activities. Constantly checking stock levels. After all I think it costs me more not having the phone around.

And if you're happy with a substandard phone go with the S7 Edge over the oneplus 3t and get ripped off with a phone that isn't the quickest, isn't the best on battery life and doesn't charge the quickest.
Samsung will release 2 if not 3 new models this year, so in that sense exactly the same as Apple.

Absolutely, just a shame that the community are the ones providing timely updates and not the OEM. Long time user of CM, or Lineage as it is now. There's no debate in that iOS trumps android big time on the security front though.

The Nexus phones only get two years of software updates so while they may be quicker, it's not as if they will be far ahead of a Samsung flagship in the long run. Furthermore, Samsung devices are featured packed, while some may call these features gimmicks it's amazing how many of these features eventually find their way to android and iOS updates. Multitasking being something that's been on Samsung since the Note 2 (and was added to the S3).

Awaken
27 Mar 17 #62
Not the same. Googles solid commitment for 2 years of major from launch and 18 months security updates from end of sale is meaningful.

Went from a nexus 6 to an s7e a couple of months ago, was a kick in the teeth to see it was still running Android 6. Only just recently caught up to my 'old' n6.

And yeah touch wiz doesn't add anything. More buttons, less usability. Still, nice piece of hardware, and a better size than the n6

Edit with some hard facts:

Nexus 6 , released Nov 2014, received latest version of android as of Dec 16, v7.1.1

Galaxy S6, released April 2015, still waiting for Android 7.0, as released Aug 2017 (which took 2 months - shock horror much outcry - to arrive on Nexus 6, later than other nexus')

I am not sure if anyone noticed. But this deal is "Like New". This means it is second hand.

Beware of O2 second hand phones. You will not get full manufacturers warranty if things go wrong. O2 are awful to deal with. I bought a "Like New" iphone from them and it was in a shocking state. Apple wouldn't touch it and it took O2 two months to deal with it. I would never buy anything from O2 again and certianly not a second hand phone ever again.

At least you wont be without a phone for 2 months with apple if you need a repair.
Samsung customer service is appalling. Had an S7 edge that developed a screen fault (Horizontal dark & light bars across the screen) and tried to book it into 5 different repair centres in the North of England.
Each one said they were waiting for parts to arrive and they wouldnt book it in for repair until they had the parts (Wtf!). They wouldnt give me a date of when these parts were arriving, nor could they tell me if they had even been ordered.
Reluctantly sent it off to Samsung using their customer services. Thats the last time i saw it for 2 months because, suprise suprise - they were waiting for parts. Put a complaint in to a senior manager and they eventually agreed to send me out a replacement phone.

Apple beat Samsung hands down on customer service alone!! Plus i've never had a screen problem in all 3 iPhones ive had.

This is a legitimate question not a slate towards Samsung.

For users who've been using the S7 for about a year, has it slowed down? Battery drain?

This is what I found with all my previous Samsung products (phones and tablets), that after a year of use, it slows down quite noticeably that it can start to get irritating. Plus the battery just drains itself after half a day of minimal use.

I only ask because the S8 is about to come out and having to decide between that or the next Apple phone.

Whilst I agree with you re: Samsung being a better all round phone (I have used nothing but ANDROIDS before you take offence and call me an APPLE fanboi) - you can't use the 3 new models a year stick to beat Apple with anymore as:

2015: Samsung S6/S6 Edge/S6 Edge +/Note 5
2016: S7/S7 Edge/Note 7
2017: S8/S8 Edge/Note 8 (most likely)

They are all doing it now.

I've sold a few phones on ebay none of which I've used a screen protector with and they've gone for around the same price as the ones listed as "grade A" and "screen protector from new"

If you're not very careful then I kind of understand but putting a screen protector on for general use just seems like placebo way to make yourself feel better about making an expensive purchase by telling yourself it will retain value better if you shove a piece of plastic/glass on the front of it even though the screen is designed with use in mind and should last without damage for a long time if you don't play football with the device or deliberately scrape it face down across concrete floors.

These have been as low as £321 on o2 refresh before. I am guessing as S8 is come out soon the price of these will drop further.
It might also be easier to pay the extra few pounds and buy it on PAYG save the hassle of paying fully for the phone and canceling the air time and still being charged for it.

All brands do it I have experienced this on Apple and Android I put it down to Android/iOS Operating systems getting bigger and more demanding each time, I think it's a ploy to get phone sales.

Theoretically if you never accept any updates and don't install stuff you don't need a phone will never slow down.

Yes twice now with Apple mobiles. It is a bit of a palaver but well worth it. They said they would cancel the airtime but kept sending bills so I had to call twice but it was sorted. Both times the mobiles looked brand new - not a mark on them. I would use this way to buy a mobile again.

The Iphone SE still works perfectly fine on current IOS though.

I have a feeling Samsung Touchwiz is the main culprit to their devices slowing down dramatically. I prefer to not use a custom ROM which is why I have to compare the Galaxy S8 and Iphone 7S/8 as a like for like device.

*You're.

Also asides from S models, Apple only releases truly new models every two years. If you want to look at a company spamming phone releases, then Samsung would be a more apt example than Apple. A few years ago they were releasing up to 56 smartphone models a year:

https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/samsung2014.jpg

But by saying that I would just be expanding upon your straw man argument. Because why does the number of phones a company releases make a difference to the phone you have? There's nothing forcing you to buy another phone just because other models have been released.
BubaMan
27 Mar 17 #113
As with any LiPo battery, it will suffer some degredation, the more charges you give it (constant top-ups is worse than letting it run down).
My Note 4 did suffer about a 20% drop in life after a year but the battery was replaceable on that...
I've had my S7 Edge for 6 months and it's holding up very well... I get a good 2 days out of it with moderate use, a bit longer with power saving.
A few people have complained about a drop in battery life after Nougat (which is supposed to be better for your battery)... I can't say I've noticed but then, I did wipe & load as I believe that existing apps & settings cause a lot of problems for upgrades and it's better just to back up & restore the important stuff onto a clean ROM.

Got a brand new one from Samsung last month for 471 with a free gear fit 2 (if they ever send it me that is). Brilliant phone and this deal is a brilliant price if you can be bothered jumping through the Refesh hoops... and it all works out without penalties.
I don't think the S7 Edge will drop in price all that much, regardless of the S8 release... the S6 hardly dropped when S7 came out tbh.

27 Mar 17 #123
While that may be the case, it's confirmed that the nexus 6 won't get anymore software updates.
But remember than many of the Android 7 features are already baked into Touchwiz aswell as 100s of other great features. There's no Game launcher or theme engine on any nexus device.

Worth mentioning if you choose 'Perfectly Fine' from the drop-down condition menu, lowest price is £321.99:

For example, the 500MB, £129.99 upfront deal works out to:

£129.99 + (£0 x24) [Airtime plan cancelled] + (£8 x24) [Device plan paid off] = £321.99

27 Mar 17 #127
Yes. You will be fine if the device is within its original warranty period (1 year from Apple). You will get whatever warranty is left of that original one year which depends how old the phone is. But the phone they gave me was over a year old. I took it to the apple store and they checked and it was out of warranty. They also looked through the logs on the phone and it showed multiple hardware issues were present. The guy at apple was really helpful and said the phone was in a shocking state and needs replacing because its beyond repair. But when I sent the phone to O2 it came back no fault found three times. Even though the logs showed hardware issues and it would reboot itself at least 6 times a day during normal use, O2 still couldn't find a fault.

I have had mine since it was released, there hasn't been any (noticeable to me) battery issues or slowdowns so far, if anything it may be slightly faster on 7.0 for me. I can't speak for previous Samsung's as I had a Nexus before this phone and a HTC before that. Nice screen, very impressive camera, overall I have been happy with the phone. Samsung seem to be pretty regular with the security updates too, which I wasn't expecting.
Awaken
27 Mar 17 #133
True, but it's 6 months older than the S6 and in a better state, update wise. The Galaxy Note 4, released the same time, is forever stuck on Android 6.01.

Game launcher and theme engine? That's because they're useless bloatware! Game launcher is a total waste, and who wants popups over their game? Theme engine is unnecessary with the ability to simply change launchers, baked into android.

I'm not hating on it, hell, I bought an S7 edge already, out the weaknesses over nexus should not be dismissed

Mine was within one year. I think it is purely luck that you have received a phone more than one year old. O2 should have handled your warranty claim more appropriately.

Whenever, I go for this kind of deal, on delivery, I check the phone warranty status. If it is outside the warranty provided by original provider then I simply return it within cooling off period as I really don't trust network providers for warranty.

27 Mar 17 #138
There's a 14-day return policy 'safety net' if it's not up-to-scratch, so well worth the risk if one can't afford to pay considerably more for a brand new one. As with all deals, this is not for everyone.

Conversely I would say why would anyone gimp a high end smartphone with a cover or case. A screen protector makes sense, doesn't add any bulk to the sexy slim phone you spent hundreds, and protects the part of your phone you look at and interact with the most.

Once the screen is scratched by a bit of sand or whatever it's highly likely to shatter when dropped and we've all dropped phones.

Bought the S7 deal previously and 1st unit arrived faulty, called O2 3 times to arrange exchange, no one ever show up. Then O2 blame the delivery company and said there is nothing they can do (funny thing is that the faulty phone was delivered ok by the same courier DPD). I got fed up with O2 and took it to Samsung for warranty repair, and called O2 to cancel the contract and paid the device in full via credit card.

2 months later they charged me £220 out of nowhere through direct debit, I asked why and they say it is early termination fee, I said I am on refresh plan and there is no such thing, he say he doesn't know and I will have to speak to the escalation team. Called escalation team and no reply, sent email and letter now and 2 weeks has passed still nothing. Currently taking this to telecom ombudsman service and maybe I will take O2 to court just to get my refund.

It is a good value and it worked for me for my previous 2 phones, but when things messed up they seems to push responsibility around and do nothing to put it right.

I've had my S7 Edge for quite a while, it's a good phone, but there has been defects with it in my experience. First the screen had the issues with a common pink line on the screen so had to send it in for repair, currently back in repair due to a inconsistent home button after the first repair. It's a great phone, everyone's experience will differ, but I currently use the Exynos version which is better than the Snapdragon in comparison/benchmarks and it is a good deal. Just be sure to keep warranty in handy.

People on here have been doing it for years without anything of that kind happening.

They sometimes make mistakes with cancelling it properly though, so get everything in writing if possible to be on the safe side - e.g. request an email confirming airtime has been cancelled & there's nothing more to pay. Although, it has to be said, they'll refund you if they mess up & you contact them about it.

Surprisingly the customer service at Lebara was one of the best I experienced.

However, what wonders me is the fact you have to transfer your number in order to cancel the airtime. I believe it should be canceled only by using PAC when you want to keep your number. If you do not want to keep it you should be able to cancel it on the spot.

Sensible advice. I wish I had done that. The problem I had, is that I bought the phone as a Xmas present for my wife three weeks before xmas. I did a few quick tests and it seemed ok. By the time she started using it on xmas day it was clear the phone was knackered the cooling off period had expired. Twice they sent me to the apple store and twice apple showed me the original date the phone was activated indicating out of warranty.

To get full satellite and PVR you will need a satellite receiver with an internet availability and then a " gift card " to break the encryption codes, which is very difficult to find a reliable one. Gift cards are available on eBay but you are better off going through a Google, more expensive but more reliable.

I went for this deal and ordered on Monday afternoon, the phone arrived on Tuesday by UK MAIL couriers.
It arrived in a cardboard O2 branded box with a sim pack and USB cable, nothing else!
The phone was described on the label as GRADE A despite ordering an AS NEW PERFECT. The phone is actually perfect with no marks or other issues!
I paid off the phone in full but O2 would not accept cancellation of the airtime without 30 days notice so likely I'll be charged the first months airtime. I was passed through 3 different depts as I disputed this but no success.
The phone still isn't unlocked but code requested through 'MY O2' account online, customer services refused to request it for me!
I'm very happy with the phone (coming from a Nexus 5) but a little disappointed with the customer services from O2.
I have used this method (REFRESH) before with no problems.

Not saying this is still the case but the smartphones I've ever owned, Galaxy S3, HTC One M8 both got very, very slow and laggy after having them for a year or so... same with my family members phones too, i feel like samsung, htc, etc. puposely make their devices get slower so you want to upgrade to a newer model, do you agree? Or is there a way to stop this from happening, do new ota software updates make my phone get slower when i upgrade to a newer version of android? Is the cpu just worn out after a year? Does the internal battery condition effect how fast my device is? Do I need to just have hardly any apps installed permanently if I want a fast phone?

I find OTA upgrades can cause poor performance and that factory resetting the phone can definitely help, although that doesn't always apply. If my phone is getting sluggish I find a factory reset usually helps there as well (around once a year) although it's also worth checking battery usage as that can highlight apps that are using the CPU more than they should, there's been a few times when my phone has been running slowly and I've found a couple of apps are really draining the power, reinstalled them and phone works fine again. I have a near three year old Galaxy Note 4 and general performance is still good.

I think just like a laptop/computer the more you use it the more it will slow down. There are many things that will cause this and many ways to reduce this, but I think apps running in the back ground is a major contributor. I personally didn't realise I had apps running in the background once until a savvy person told me and showed me how to get rid and speed up my phone. I am not technical so don't gun me down, I just know that is what happened.

Very tempted after the disappointing s8 plus announcement. I like my s5 but it's starting to get slow.

Should I still go through with the 5 gb and cancel aspect or do you guys and gals think there will be better deals as the price drops.

Received my S7 edge and it is as stated as good as new. In the blue cardboard box with a USB cable. No charging plug or pin to take the sim tray out with though (not an issue for me, but would be good to be made clear).
Called O2 after collecting it, paid the £312 on top of the initial £39 to clear the contract, no issue cancelling the airtime deal (was told i will only be charged for what i have used).
Just waiting for the unlock code so i can put my 3 sim in it (they said up to 7 days!) expecting it today at some point.
As my O2 sim no longer is active, they are going to e-mail me the code and text it to my other (original) number.

Replacement handset is perfect...put a hephaestus screen protector and it's simply brilliant. the fit is first class and application was a doddle thanks to their two steps peel.

Just to confirm I collected my phone last Tuesday.
As described - perfect condition.
Came in the blue box with just USB cable.

Paid the phone in full.
Got it unlocked.
They sent me a code by email. I had to enter my EE sim card and use the code on the first restart.
Used ultimate shield foil screen protector on all 4 sides of the device just now.

Tomorrow I will cancel the airtime.

Hope everyone who decided to get the deal is as much happy with the phone as I am with mine.

All the best guys
L

PS. I am glad that after S8 official press release the value of S7 went up ;-)

2 questions:

Is this worth the hit on a credit rating?
Second, is there any way of telling how old the phone is?

Bought an iPhone 7 128gb for £560 but considering this deal.

1 Apr 17 #234
Well you are paying the device off so it will be a positive on your credit file.

Not massivley, took about 10 minutes on the phone while they try to convince you not to cancel.

ive heard alot of people also mentioned they're credit score is never then same after taking these 02 refresh deals out. as the dept who deal with it aren't very "on the ball". also when u cancel airtime do u get that refunded or loose it?

some even have the remaining airtime charged to their cards, it's great when it works ballache if it goes wrong

Anyone know what the orange and purple notification light means ?

To be honest, I never had a problem canceling it. One my first connection when I was telling the customer service representative I said that:
1. I want to pay off my phone.
2. I want to keep o2 account registered to my email as I like o2 priority.
3. I want to cancel my contract.
In general, I am happy-go-lucky, honest person, I told the guy it is an amazing deal where you can get s7e for half the price and I want to use it to get one.

He recommended swapping the number for payg card as it would suit my needs more.
Obviously, he asked whether I would be interested in other o2 offers. (And I do not mind being asked that I do understand its his job at the end of the day.) However again being honest I told him I got cheap cashback offer and its already on and for the next 12 months, I will not be engaging in different contracts.

Now here it gets interesting and I believe no one mentioned it before.
There are two options to cancel the contract.
1. Simply notify them of the cancellation and they will cancel it after the end of first month cycle. It means you have to pay the whole month for the usage.
2. Get o2 sim card sent from them and transfer pay monthly into this pay as you go card which was sent to you.

Obviously, I went for option 2.

I got the card. I called again. I was again asked for the reason of cancellation. I told that I found this deal and I wanted to use this opportunity to get this phone I normally wouldn't be able to afford.

He was very helpful with an explanation. I consider o2 customers services as one of the best I ever came across.

As of today I have canceled the contract and paid the phone off. The 7week bill is still yet to come.

What happens now depends. If everything goes OK. Great. If they charge me for the whole month of the usage. I will pay stupid £26 more and get it back later via sending an email and requesting them to look into that.
Once I got an extra £5 credit when they messed my bills from O2.

It could be an extra thing that has to be done. However, I do not see it as a hustle. It's just an email.

I am checking my credit rating on regular basis. It's hard for me to believe that this action will result in the hit on the rating, however, once I see it for myself I will let you know.

My only problem is the case. I have been reading and I am looking for one however still cannot decide.
If you have any recommendations please feel free to let me know. I am after a case which has a rubber or silicone mount as I have foild around all 4 sides of the phone.

Could be iv not read about there even being other colours lol i thought it was just three.lol

Regarding your earlier post, I confirmed many times throughout the cancellation process that i wouldn't get charged for any airtime (obviously didn't use anything from the plan). Let's see.

I'm very pleased with the spigen neo hybrid case.

Very useful info Luke, I done the same as you but didn't cancel my Pay as you go card, Is there any reason to? As will be sitting with zero usage and wont be getting any charges I presume?

Can you still use o2 priority linked to an email address instead of the mobile number?
How do you register? Use the payg SIM then swap it out ?

It has decided to crash twice in 3 days or so randomly; have you upgraded to Nougat also? I might have to get it checked by O2 because this is kinda dodgy. The phone is in immaculate condition on the outside though.

I got charged one month airtime today so spoke to them and arranged for a refund.

They are also going to send me a replacement retail boxed coral Blue S7 Edge due to the dust issue and £10 refund for the screen protector that will now goto waste.

Decent response from them I must say. Very impressed.
