When i was leaving sainsburys superstore ( angel ) there was a guy with a collection bucket , said any three items for any donation , i gave £2 for 3 mugs then went back and got another 3 for £2 so gave £4 for 6 , but you can give more or less (its for charity so dont be stingy )

Have a look at the capital city of these countries where the ministers are driving round in mercs and living in big posh houses, they need to sort out the governments of these countries first then the starving people would get fed.
Also sort out this country as well before we worry about other countries .
Our roads, NHS, public services are running aground whilst we give money to other countries such as India which has a space program and nuclear capability and clearly doesn't need it .

some of the comments here are just stupid.
third world debt is measured in trillions, you think raising 50 to 100 million a year is going to end that? plus part of the problem is the area where they live is not suitable for sustaining life, drought, fires and pretty much impossible to grow food aren't problems that are easily or cheaply solved. So Comic relief and other charities won't end this problem but even if they help a little bit that has to be a good thing, right?

What I don't understand is Comic Relief has been going for years and they've raised a hell if a lot of money, yet Africa still has the same problem!!... I've donated a few times but not this time as I don't understand where the money is going!

Population growth and epidemics like ebola mean there is a growing number of people, particularly children, left with nothing. Comic Relief's money is also used to fund very meaningful services here in the UK. The only way you can justify things like this is thinking of the individual, you can't deny your donation could change even a day of one persons life at home or abroad

Comic Relief spend £15 million a year on staff costs, so of the £71 million raised yesterday over 20% doesn't go towards helping anyone.
They also have £210 million (three times the amount raised yesterday) sat in investments which only bring in about £2 million a year income.

Africa is a cesspit to throw your money. They have all the resources to prosper but rely on handouts. Corrupt govements and dictators squander the money. Ultimately the people are to blame they keep them in power, look at Zimbabwe.

It depends what metric you're using. If looking purely at the number of people in poverty across Africa then it's actually getting worse due to population growth. However in percentage terms there have been large strides even the last few decades and really this is what counts as population growth will plateau as the countries become richer.
"According to latest World Bank estimates, the share of Africans who are poor fell from 56% in 1990 to 43% in 2012. The report argues that the poverty rate may have declined even more if the quality and comparability of the underlying data are taken into consideration.
However, because of population growth many more people are poor, the report says. The most optimistic scenario shows about 330 million poor in 2012, up from about 280 million in 1990. Poverty reduction has been slowest in fragile countries, the report notes, and rural areas remain much poorer, although the urban-rural gap has narrowed."

It's important to look at results, rather than the amount spent on the front line - decent management can get more done with a given set of resources than perhaps some unguided (but well-meaning) people spending all the cash on aid itself. Overhead costs may be a bad thing, may be a good thing - it's too simplistic to simply say the best charity is the one with the lowest overhead.
Indeed, I heard an interesting talk last week on altruistic effectiveness to say that, paradoxically, if you want to do good in the world and have the relevant skills you should go and be a city trader making 100s of £s a year, then give most of it away to charity rather than just doing good work yourself.

yes i was thinking the same thing... people with charity buckets aren't authorised to give away store items in return for donations, especially saying something as broad as "any 3 items for any donation"
sounds very dubious indeed. i would discourage anyone from availing of this without clarifying whether it is legitimate.

Why would someone want to dislike something that's true? That is the pure truth of it. We send foreign aid to countries that spend the money on weapons, training soldiers, pursuing space programmes and corrupt politicians. Namely Pakistan and India. However this has nothing to do with comic relief which is for Africa. Even though they breed like rabbits, knowing they can't feed or look after the children they bring into the world. I definitely think over the course of history - the several money raising things that have happened (some on a yearly basis) - live aid, children in need, comic relief etc. Plus all the other charities that collect for african children (which are a joke as they only have to donate 10% of profits to be a registered charity), however there should have been enough money by now to provide nets and fresh water pipes to all villages there. All a huge scam

They do, and I know this for certain as it was banned one year at my Catholic primary school for that reason. Best not get into a debate about the rights and wrongs of religion (that seems crazy to me though). One of the issues that was raised was some people receiving them couldn't read to understand how they were used, others again through particular beliefs don't want to use contraception. But yes, more widespread education and more of it in general would help for sure. Though it is the individuals choice and as with historical Britain's own ways (talking a century or so ago), people are known to have more children knowing that some may die in childhood sadly.

Shame none of you know how Comic Relief works. It's the only charity I would ever give to as 100% goes to the cause. Each good cause only gets a definitive amount of time to receive their grant and they have to reapply then after the previous grant is assessed for its value for money and benefit. CR has expanded into other countries and perhaps we should look at the likes of Apple and the big 5 companies which are holding over $500bn in cash reserves.

Somebody i know works for air ambulance & he can come home with 500+ a week if they swindle enough people into 'donating' for their cause.
Whilst it is a good thing it is also a really bad thing, goverments should help out these causes not the general public. we pay alot on taxes and everything else they have us off with but then expect us to pay for kids in africa too, not our problem not our country. Let them sort it out themselves..

It is true. They arrange for different sponsors to donate cash to pay for their logistical overheads, which is separate to the cash raised as part of their announced total. So if you donate £100, all that cash will go to aid. Of course, that doesn't mean the charity does more good than one which would spend £20 on management and £80 on aid (as the management might do a better job than Comic Relief's) but the original statement is a fair one to make.
