My view is if you are that incompetent that you can't speak and drive at the same time then you should not even be carrying passengers, let alone answer a call albeit hands free.
More so, for some people that are challenged by voices in the car, their radio should be removed as well.
From the statutory law point of if you are weaving all over the road or involved in an accident then you can be prosecuted if found you were on the phone. If you are scared of that then please re-read my previous 2 paragraphs.

There is also a Sony unit also at halfords for £10 cheaper but after reading one if the reviews on their website I decided to go for the Pioneer.
Note this does not have a CD player but who wants one of those and the corresponding clutter of CDs anyway when you can copy them all onto 1 USB.

If it's the same one as mine then you have the option of Spotify from the source button, but I always use the Bluetooth to connect.
Probably a stupid query, but I'm intrigued and genuinely curious, by the place of individual car stereos, like this, in modern-day cars (with their moulded dashboards and facias, hidden electronics and remote controls etc.)
Is it purely for older cars or a simple transition?
polarbaba to Poppydog

depends on your car, some cars.can use a fascia adapter and perhaps other adapters to connect to the loom and steering controls.
some .. may not have this facility,
if your car has an aux in then you can still connect a Bluetooth adapter to it, also various dab solutions are also available to allow your dab audio to be retransmitted over FM. or even Bluetooth to FM devices.
so even if your car cannot use a fascia adapter, then you still have options.

Older cars, and some lower spec newer ones.
My 09 Clio had a normal DIN sized aperture so would have been an easy swap, and I doubt that's the last of the cheaper cars to come with similar. At worst, you'd need an adaptor lead and another for the steering wheel controls.
In comparison, my current mini (and the last one) would be an utter nightmare and probably need half the dash removing, and other stuff wiring and coding to fool the system.
Annoys me that the display technology on these cheaper end ones hasn't moved on for nigh on 20 years. Quite fancy the 8700DAB for my mr2 but it's usually around £170 at its cheapest, which is a lot more to pay over this deal, just for a three line display. Go further up and the £300 double-din full screen ones are barely better than factory-fit stuff from five years ago.

Greatly disagree.
Hands free is not perfectly safe, agreed. It is however an improvement over using the phone in your hand.
I also deeply believe it's more dangerous to talk to passengers than it is via hands free.
Natural instinct makes you want to look at people when they spook, majority of a conversation is done by body language and physical movement and not simply audible sound.
So yes, it's not completely safe to use hands free.
Point is it's safer than not using it, it's a matter of degree.
It's safer to drive at 20mph on a residential road instead of 30 or 40 or 50. But we'll still likely go around 30 on that road, even though 20 is safer there have to be reasonable limits. Points where we stop mass safety whoring.

So you have passengers that carry on talking to you while you look at them instead of the road? In my experience not only do they not talk to me when the driving gets 'interesting' they often stab at brake pedals they don't have.
A reason why talking to a passenger is very different to talking on a telephone. The passenger is there. They know when to shut up and they know why you shut up with no risk of them thinking you are stupid or rude. Conversation with passengers is usually more relaxed because the passenger doesn't have anything better to do.The conversation is not costing either of you time or money.
Except all research shows it isn't and being dumb enough to think it is makes it much more dangerous.

I`ve got music controls on the steering wheel.
Do you think it still will work after I upgrade my basic stereo to this? (its an 8 years old Suzuki)
VDisillusioned
5 Mar 172#24
Those are exactly the same points I was going to make. My passengers, usually my own family, know why I have shut up and perhaps more importantly are aware enough to know when to shut up themselves. Also telephone conversations are different in my opinion, part of your brain is off in another place and because of the low fidelity of the audio it is much harder to interpret nuances of tone and vocalization, so you have to put a lot more mental effort into figuring out the subtler meanings in the other persons speech than you do with someone sitting very close to you. That's not to say some people shouldn't be allowed to drive with passengers at all. The number of drivers I see having animated conversations looking directly at the person beside them or apparently even at a back seat passenger frightens the life out of me.

Would Halfords fit this if you have one of those factory fitted built in radios & connect it so you could control volume etc from steering etc?
That's simply not true. Research shows passengers change the pace of their conversation, pause when the vehicle approaches obstacles and hazards or the driver performs a manoeuvre, and also have the ability to assist with hazards e.g. "I can see a kid on the road over there." None of this is possible over hands free where the caller assumes , well, that you're free!

+1 for including DAB so a good price. I think these units really need to include an SD card slot esp when there is no CD player. I'm not a fan of front USB ports, they are nice and convenient but will be annoying when you want to remove the face. With an SD slot you plug it in then forget about it.
Been buying Pioneer for the last 17 years and the unit I bought 3 years ago works with the hands-free remote I bought 15 years ago, bet it would still work with my old CD changer! I've got a DEH-X8600BT which has BT, and SD card slot behind the face (below the CD slot) so it stays in after face removal. It has an OEL screen so you get lots of info/pretty animations.

You are only allowed to use a hand held mobile when safely parked and with the ignition turned off, neither of which is true in the scenario you have described.

I'm not trying to make any particular point here but just sharing some information:
The reason given that chatting on the phone, even hands free, is more dangerous that than talking to a passenger is that the passenger will tend to shut up if when road conditions demands the driver's attention.
The other thought is that its is legal to use a hand-held radio while driving but not a phone. I've always wondered why that is and the only reason I can come up with is that the police may need to use their radios while driving.

If you touch the phone with the engine running as a driver the law can provide you with 6 points and £200 fine. So if your parked up handbrake on no chance of moving but your engines running you deserve to be fined... unless it's 999.

How does Spotify work with this? Or is just the same as normal Bluetooth audio?
On my current stereo, Spotify song names don't come up on the stereo, only Google play music does.
Channels kept freezing. It would go days stuck on one channel, and not able to change it. Also, the memory of the stored channels would last for so long, then just disappear.
I thought it was just a bad unit, so I took it back and they fitted another, and it had the same problems, so I took that back and swapped it for a Pioneer DEH-X8700DAB. That was almost two years ago, and that has worked brilliantly since. Like I said, I wouldn't touch another Sony Car Stereo again.

For those who can't bear the mono, low bit rate audio of many DAB stations, there is a little known alternative that I've seen demo'd at car audio dealers.
In car Freeview! Potentially better audio, if your fave station(s) are among the 20 to 30 on the platform. On the downside, you would need to be in a strong signal area, with a special aerial installation.
