fine, do that. I wouldn't spend money on an OLED as it stands, and how much future proofing can you ever get from a TV? Buy this now for 3 years, sell for £100, buy a 55" OLED in three years for £460. Much more sensible in my opinion.

Talking of OLED as 'future proofing' is potentially flawed anyway, since the organic subpixels in OLED TVs deteriorate significantly faster than the LED lamps in these TVs. So in six years' time - assuming the rest of the hardware still works - an LED TV will have lost very little brightness where an OLED panel will be discernibly dimmer. Not to mention the likelihood of patchy 'ghost' artefacts from the more accelerated blue subpixel deterioration in OLED panels. There is no way to make them last longer as they are organic compounds, so manufacturers try to lessen the effect by having the display move imperceptibly. Over time you'll still get a build up of patchy screen ghosting either way.

OLED panels look great, but they are astronomically more expensive and certainly don't count as 'future proofing' in my book, for the reasons outlined - on top of the fact that prices will plummet a lot faster than LEDs at some point. It still makes sense to buy a TV like this.

No. TP Vision, who run the Philips TV brand, are a display company. They also make AOC monitors.

Plenty of people still have DVD players or older consoles that get used on a regular basis and don't have an HDMI output.

This isn't an HDR TV, it's support is limited to the ability to read HDR content and adjust the whole screen brightness based on that. There's no local dimming or wider colour gamut.

The KS7000 is the minimum you want if you're buying for HDR, and it's seriously worth considering spending another £500 on something like a DX902.

OLEDs don't tend to do that well in side by side HDR comparisons because they can't do those bright highlights, and there's the colour desaturation at high brightness caused by the white subpixels in LG's OLED panels.

Connected my N64 up using SCART the other day to my HDR Panasonic. Works well. Thanks SCART.

I think this expired yesterday. So to summarise:

Most people who bought this seem happy - including myself

Some people who didn't buy this think it would have made more sense for us to spend an extra £1200 on an OLED one for future proofing.

Good deal, OP.

I'm so glad you pointed out the new firmware had solved the youtube issue.

I was beginning to think I was the only one affected.

Got the tv, youtube seemed to work well, didn't check it out properly as I was eager to test the android os and side load.
Updated the tv with December/Jan's firmware, then noticed studdering on my yourube videos.

Checked my net connection, making sure it was over 25mbs down. Pausing videos letting them fully loaded seemed to help reduce the issue but never fixed.

Was going to leave the new firmware till another day. But after catching your post, I got it side loaded on, and youtube is working perfectly. No judder, stutter or anything.

Indeed. I also noticed slight judder in YouTube, but now in the new firmware it's gone. Beautiful TV. No problems at all. Rastafari is the almighty.

Wow, the new firmware seems to have resolved the Judder issues I was seeing on YouTube. TV looks fab! I need to find an HDR source to try out, appreciate this isn't the proper HDR experience but I'm chuffed with the price I paid for this and now have 500 quid to spend on something else (was going to buy a KS7000).

I had 3 small light bleeds at the bottom of my set and noticed if I "pulled" the bezel away from the screen a little that they went. My fix was a small tab of paper between the screen and bezel, and with a bit experimentation in moving left or right of the source, the bleeds are all but gone. Once inserted, the tabs of paper cannot be seen. Have a go see if it helps if yours are on the screen edges.

I wouldn't want to go through the hassle again tbh. I hardly return anything and when I do it's generally a straightforward process. This experience has been enough to put me off the TV, and off Argos too for that matter.

I have to admit that when it works properly - gaming on it is amazing - been playing through Shadow of Mordor and HZD on a PS4 Pro and both really stand out well. The issues seem to be with live action, even on Netflix 4K content.

This video shows what I get when my Nvidia Shield screensaver comes on: https://streamable.com/mgnwn
I've also tried swapping the HDMI cables between the Shield and the PS4. The other issue is that even on 4K content the video appears smudged/blotchy (like large blocks of colour) rather than smooth. If had solutions to those problems then I'd probably keep it as the remote and software problems would hopefully get resolved with software updates

For now though I've got my sights set on the KS7000 and hopefully write an app to set the lights on my Hue bridge to match whatever's playing on the Shield
wingman0401
20 Mar 17 #313
Indeed, I experienced none of the issues mentioned.

Only issue I've got is a bit of light bleed, although Argos have told me I can return it based on that if I want (live chat).
J9STL
20 Mar 17 #312
Could you not get a replacement, as some of the issues you describe are not being experienced by others. This wouldn't affect your rights to return the "new" tv if faults are present with that one too.

Update: I spent a lot of time on the phone with them today and finally got them to agree to take it back - was a lot of hassle having to go through customer service, tech support, Philips and then back down the chain again but ultimately they did say that I could take it back to the store and mention the call reference and get a full refund.

Really gonna miss the ambilight but there's just too many other issues for me to keep it just for that.

Thanks man. Downloading now. Hope there are instructions on how to load the new firmware within the zip file?

EDIT: Got it. Unzip the .upg and place it on the root of the USB stick. Insert to TV, TV picks it up automatically and takes care of the upgrade process itself.

Does anyone know how to put NowTV in this TV?

Slightly annoying I keep getting a very subtle stutter on YouTube 4k playback. Got 39mbs download which should be more than enough.

The stutter comes and goes, even with the video fully loaded.

Don't really want to return the set as I've sold my old one off to my brother (was a bit hasty but he had the cash and was sell now or miss an easy sale).

Surely can be returned as faulty? Under that rule if you opened it and it would not power up then they won't take it back as it's opened? Something like that would make me wind the wife up and get her on the phone to them then, woman scorned and all that lol.
qwerta369
19 Mar 17 #301
Well, that's illegal. If the product is faulty on receipt you're entitled to your money back.

Sounds like they're treating your refund "request" as change of mind, rather than faulty. Have you made clear that it's faulty?
J9STL
19 Mar 17 #300
surely it has to be opened and "tested" to find these issues - I find it unfair that argos should refuse a return
I returned two separate sets - which were opened - one of them wasn't faulty (I returned 49" and kept 55")

How to set Kodi to pass trough DTS? It is working in the built in video player but in Kodi.
MrBrightside1987
19 Mar 17 #298
So I've had this TV for a week and decided that I want to give it back but Argos a refusing a refund saying that they can't accept an opened item. It has too many issues with it and I'd much rather spend the extra on the Samsung UE55KS7000. Even after updating to the latest version of the OS I still get these issues:

1) Very noticable colour banding
2) Random OS crashes
3) Remote becomes unresponsive
4) Stuck pixels
5) Washed out colours despite trying colour settings from AVForums
6) Get a green "static" screen when switching input and have to turn it off and on a few times for this to work again

Bit gutted that I bought it and according to Argos I'm now stuck with it despite having so many issues.

usb or external hdd in NFTS format or fat32 (if it's a small usb drive). The TV reads those formats.

When plugges into the TV, if it asks to format the drive, just ignore that.

Use es file explorer app off the playstore.

Side loading is pretty simple.

I've tried a few side loaded apks ( fspe, snes, and side loaded roms onto a usb that's formatted to the tv and left in the tvs port).

Skygo doesn't work, but the Dutch version does (I accidentally downloaded the wrong apk). But didn't try changing the language.

Now tv apk loads sideways. :/

I'm using Kodi youbcan find in the built in Play store. If you mean doesn't show you need to turn on installation from unknown sources. You need to sideload es file explorer. Browse your app and install. It will trigger the option installationnfrom unknow sources. Those apps won't appear on your homescreen, you need to start them from the apps menu. There is a workaround afaik.

It is actually the first time I'm using KODI. Have no problems with it. Played Dr Strange from external drive FHD-DTS no probs. Regarding the density, everything was just so big with the default launcher. But at the and I just disabled it and using HALauncer instead. I just can't live without customisation. By the way, if you want to stick with the default launcher just want to hide recommendations and Philips apps, it is possible.

I will fire up a guide little bit later today under the forums and leave here a link. Will be much more better than in this thread.

16 Mar 17 #265
It depends on what else you can get in the £540 price range.

If you are specifically looking for a 55 inch tv and all are in this price range then I would go for the Philips because the Ambilight is a fantastic feature.

If you can get another 55 inch tv for £50-£100 less eg a Hisense then I would go for the cheaper (note I have not searched for other tv prices so I don't know if you can buy the same size for less!).

This is bearing in mind I use my tv mainly for watching nursery rhymes on youtube via the now tv box, watching the news and the odd movie or tv show once a week. I can't tell the difference in picture quality between a "superior" tv which costs £800 or a £500 one.

Sound quality on most tvs these days isn't that great. I bought a Cambridge Audio A3 amplifier on ebay two months ago for £15 which significantly improves the sound and has made my tv setup awesome

Any HDCP 2.2 devices need to be connected to HDMI 1 or 2.

I would recommend switching off all sharpness and motion enhancements. Also make sure your devices aren't set to RGB colour range.

I can have play around and confirm settings when I get home on Thursday evening if you've not got a solution by then.
Seems like you're having a bad time with the TV and have to admit that I've not really had the issues you've mentioned but can try and help if you're thinking of keeping it

For gaming I tried the Game mode and thought it looked nice, but with the AVForum options it looked even better. Bear in mind you need to set the settings for each input.

Flicker may be from motion settings - try disabling the motion fix setting (can't remember the exact name)

I'll have a proper try little later on.

It's not visible within the game. I think it's when it's on a dark blue/grey background I get a odd contrast change then the screen shows these small swirls.

But it's only showing on my android box hole screen which is dark grey. Ps4 use screen (dark blue) and on the steam store I noticed which is black/grey.

I may have something wrong in the settings or a low hz rate in the wrong port (1-2 is 60hz while 3 and 4 are 30hz 4k).

Just wanted to ask, if I turn on uhd sharpness is that the upscale from 1080p setting?

re the flicker, IIRC someone on here had this and it was their AV receiver causing it
try removing other connected inputs leaving just the ps4 to identify a possible source (unless ps4 is the prob ! )

No. However the night settings are really for when you are watching in the dark and without the Ambilight. If you have ambient light from lamps or the built in Ambilight you will probably find the day settings are fine for night viewing too.

I had used tweaked settings. it loos alright, then I upgraded the firmware and it seems my issues are there.

I play on preset settings under game mode, I get an odd flicker every few seconds on things like steam, android box and ps4 dash board.

I use photo mode and it seems to clear it up slightly.

Youtube video stutter/slow downs weren't present before the firmware update and are now.

I'll reformat the TV again later. Would be the 2nd reformat I've done since owning it.

I tried fat32 on my 64gb usb, the TV detects it then formats it.
I went into settings and checked usb settings and it says "to use usb storage for recording and apps the TV must first turn off to activate"

Can't get past that, tried with a 500gb 3.0 drive and the usb stick above.

I had some trouble getting USB to work. When I first plugged my HDD it didn't detect anything. Then I formatted it from the Storage menu but my laptop wouldn't read it.

The solution I found was to format from my laptop in FAT32 format. This then read on the TV with no issues.
By the way, this was using a 500GB portable hard drive without any power supply.

I agree with what you're saying.

I got this tv Saturday. Was great when running native 4k content via the PC to it. But everything else seems to have issues.

Colors are washed out or way over the top.
A slight flicker occurs on the ps4 dash board, steam and my android box.

The built in youtube app is choppy during 4k playback.
Usb external storage doesn't work for me (unsure if it has to be external power drive).

I got carried away with the low price point, but I'm now seeing you get what you paid for. Still tempted to pack it up and return.

I'm defensive but I'm not ashamed of it. Why not be defensive when someone comes onto a thread for a TV they're clearly not in the slightest bit interested in, just so they can bleat on about the posh TVs they've owned and try and make people who have bought this feel small. Sure, I was being defensive because to say what you've said is indirectly calling me a fool for enjoying this TV.

14 Mar 17 #215
Ok fine I'll take my moron hat off for a mo.

Well, obvs, price also reflects stock level as you already alluded to. But also Argos can acquire much more stock than other retailers so they receive bulk discounts. So they can cut deeper..capiche? My point was this tv is llike not even a year old and you don't cut that fast or that deep that quickly unless....issues.

The other thing to consider are tv's in the price range and size that this tv originally occupied that have similar spec, why isn't the hisense getting cut into oblivion? Why is the hisense holding a higher price despite the fact this philips has LG dna?

This is what i meant about alarm bells. Might be a false alarm, might be argos clearing space. Point is, did you hear the alarm in the first place?

Also normally I'd be a sucker for this deal but since OLED, I cannot look at any other non-OLED tv's, HDR can only succeed on OLED and armed with that info, seeing this 4k HDR etc....alllarrrmm bellls

By the way it has much better color after the tweaking, yeah it is just a guideline. Mine after set values looks great. It was horrible with XO and not it is much much better I need to say I like it. However with PC I need further tweaking because with sharpness set to 0 the cards on the poker tables look a little bit hazy.

It could be Philips wanting to generate some attention prior to the press launch for their 2017 range which was today. This TV is end of line so discounts are to be expected. The LG B6 has dropped a lot more of it's RRP than this TV.
qwerta369
13 Mar 17 #207
Of course, the only problem with that logic is, it's £600 now, and that's only in Argos, it's even more expensive elsewhere. The £450 price was just a flash deal that Argos did. Maybe Argos overstocked this model. Or maybe it was a loss-leader.

Were every other retailer to be selling it at bargain basement prices, you might have a point. As they're not, I'm afraid you don't.
jokerevo
13 Mar 17 #206
Christ we're a bit defensive aren't we? Well I'm an LGB6 and EC owner, I've also had a Kuro, a GT50 and a POS hitachi so I'm reasonably qualified to comment on this TV, having seen my mate buy it because it's 4k for £500 quid lol.

There's a reason this set hasn't held it's original RRP and dropped faster than pigeon poo in Trafalgar square. Anyone with half a brain would know that if the tv was such VFM, it would've held it's price and dropped no more than 10-15%. Suppliers want to maximise their profits you know?

So when you see a drop from an original launch rrp of 2k!?!?!?! to 500 inside of a year you know that this set has problems. You may not have those problems now but you are going to get them, hence the alarms.

Think about it, do you really think LG/Philips would undermine their entire range by selling this at this price? The supplier is the one cutting! Do you really think that other manufacturers wouldn't want to get a slice of the pie at this price if they could? You open as high as you can price wise and then aim to hold value. You noticed that right? That the best TV's hold their price for much longer than other sets? Isn't it weird how the other TV's get slashed by much bigger margins...weird. Totally weird man. No doubt the supplier is finding the price sweet spot now, hence the price rise.

The price is it is currently at is the equivalent of dead stock. They're offloading mate...

The TV doesn't have great blacks, their more grey. All reviews point out the color and black levels aren't amazing but the TV is a right bargain for cost.

I'm out off by the lack of color depth. Even tinkering it either looks over exposed in color or lacking life.

Gonna try for another day or two and see if I can get along with it. I do love the ambilight does well of smoothing out the screen in a dark room.

What have you set the backlight level (contrast) to? You can go higher with more ambient lighting but too high in a dark room will cause issues with perceived black levels.

I had a small amount of backlight bleed at the bottom of my screen, and noticed if I got my fingernail between the bezel and screen that in some cases the bleed disappeared. So I then tried inserting a small tab of paper between the bezel and the screen. This alters the pressure and after experimenting with positioning, it has reduced it significantly.... and you cannot see the paper if you place it carefully.
Give it a go - it worked for me, and saved faffing with a return and potentially worse replacement.

Your TV is already a stonking set, I changed as moved home and the new living room is much brighter and I sit further away from the TV now, also SWMBO got me an XB1 S for Christmas so wanted to try it on a 4k TV, I've bought and returned a Hisense 55m3300 for banding, skin tone and motion issues, a 55ks7000 for back peeling off and motion issues and an LG 55UH770v for banding and back light bleed, all the TV's I've tried and looked at recently have been plasticky to keep the weight low.
My son has an LG 49UH650V and I find the pic awful for anything that moves
I had resigned myself to sticking with my plasma until OLED became more of a reasonable price
I was expecting to be packing this up this morning, but for the price I'm keeping it.....never thought I would say it but I don't miss my GT30 at all, I can't say this is a "better" TV but I'm happy with my change and don't regret it.

Thanks for posting OP.

Went out and bought one of these last night, my third 4K TV in the space of a few months, both the Samsung KS7000 and Sony KD55XD8599BU let me down (Sony bad light bleed, Samsung refused to turn on, both were bought when on offer and when returned, were out of stock).

Big time Sony fan and interested in Samsung products but decided to hold fire to see what else was about, saw this deal and figured I'd take a punt at £450.

I'm amazed, other than the light bleed issue on the Sony, the picture seems on par. Please note that I am not a professional nor do I claim to be, but to my eyes (and I'm fussy) I really can't see any difference.

There's a touch of light bleed round the edges but I've managed to massage those out with tweeking the settings to a point they're barely visible. I've resided myself to the fact that I'd have to change the TV numerous times to get one without light bleed. With modern TV's, it's an ailment we've got to live with (unless you're spending mega money).

Having said that, a little light bleed with a £450 TV is acceptable. Not with TV's reaching circa £1,000.

Just need to wait for a decent PS4 Pro deal to rear it's head...

Oh, and the ambient lighting...Not a gimmick.

It's all about wants really. I have a 43" in my bedroom and it's perfect for that. I wanted something a bit more cinematic for the living room so I went for 55". At first was slightly hit and miss with the TV.

Pc on native 4k looks amazing. Only tried dying light and fallout 4 (fallout looked like trash without the 4k pack).

Ps4 standaed was a slight hit or miss. No mans sky looked odd, text was difficult to read, colors were off.
Dying light ps4 was alright but the area I was in was washed out and no match to the PC version.
Diablo 3 looked great and the ambilight was nice, didn't play much to really test it.

The division looked nice, sharp looking details, colors a little faded but division never really had great color. Ambilight reaction was great, running on the highway bridges and each pillar would block the led lights as it reacted with the sunlight.

Had to turn off a lot of settings to make it look good enough (sharpness 0, enhanced this and that off).

Then I tried the android OS, Google playstore found hearthstone installed. Couldn't work out how to load it.

Figured it out after, go to settings installed apps and run.

Got my razer naga wireless mouse plugged in wired mode worked instantly. Then tried it on the receiver and it picked it up right away.

Been playing hearthstone for past hour in bed on the TV.

Currently trying to update the TV but it's just sitting there searching. Even though it's warned me a new update was needed.

Great tv atm, still gonna see how I get along with some standard sd tv on it, if it's alright I'll consider keeping it.

I got this today and used the AVForums settings for the 6501 as a starting point, turned off all processing I could find, since then I have watched last weeks Top Gear, some Grand Tour, played Titanfall2 and COD on the xbox one s, also played some 4k you tube videos and watched MOTD on BBC1 HD via SkyHD box and can say for the money I'm well impressed and I replaced a Panny 50GT30 plasma with this so was quite worried about motion and gaming lag but so far I'm very happy and feel like its a bit of a bargain.
I don't find the interface laggy or slow, screen uniformity is good too with no noticeable bleed, clouding or banding (annoying on sport).....I hope this helps someone as these where the concerns I had but due to Argos being so good with returns I took the gamble and I'm glad I did.

It would be nice if you could offer an article or report that backs up this claim and not just say it's old news. If they have managed to make an *organic* substance last longer then why are they still using PenTile arrangements and other variations rather than RBG stripes? Surely if this was old news then they would go with the effectively higher resolution subpixel layout.

If you have information that proves that they have overcome this obstacle then I would be really keen to read it as you're obviously more clued up than me and I don't mind being proven wrong - it's one of the things that puts me off OLED, and still does to this day with phones.

Thanks, looks like a lot of TV for the money.

Decided to opt for this than the LG C6 that I was going to pick up during the week for £1800. 4k and the Ambilight and also seems like the updates fixes the performance issues and it's only the fraction of the price. Might not be the latest or greatest but makes sense for me to pay a third of the price for something that's at least fit for purpose, and then pick up an OLED in 3 years time when they don't leave such a big dent in the pocket.

6 inches on a TV is actually an awful lot. I've just upgraded my 49" to this 55" and it's so massive it's almost vulgar. Having to think of alternative stands for it
bobbler
11 Mar 17 #87
This was indeed true, but the recent firmware update has cured any slowness with the guide, it appears in about two seconds when you press it the first time following boot up now and is instant after that. The scrolling through the guide is also instantaneous to scroll.
The same is also true now for flipping between the apps like Google play store and back to TV. Its overall much more responsive.
I do have two complaints about the TV, one is Youtube app (so may be improved by an update - but not a deal breaker) as even on 1080p streams there is still some stuttering of video playback but not of the navigation.
Just above the point the stands join the screen there are two "pressure" type whiter spots of backlighting which I have never managed to really get rid of completely, they where much improved when I put the on an alternative stand though they still remain visible on dark scenes

[/quote]

Your information is out of date buddy..... OLEDs have 100,000 hours lifespan.

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1465304750

Peak brightness is a silly comparison here, because most HDR content is mastered in much higher nits than most TV's can currently offer, so tone mapping comes into play. Whilst the likes of the budget Samsung KS7000 advertise a peak brightness slightly higher than the LG OLED range most of this is irrelevent to HDR because APL is favoured on these panels over these HDR 'highlights' you speak of, furthermore a good picture isn't just about peak brightness, black levels and shadow details are also important and LCD largely falls over in this area

Peak brightness may be more of a selling point in 5 years time when entry level TV's reach 5-10k nits, at the minute a few hundred nits makes minimal difference with proper tone mapping.

And how can it have meaningful HDR support when it has identical brightness and colour to the 6101?

If you have a 6101, 6401 and 7601 in a line playing HDR content then the one that immediately jumped out as different would be the 7601, not the 6101.

Not so much better as having HDR to begin with. And sure, they have their limitations, it's an emerging technology so it's not going to be perfectly polished yet.

I'm not saying that everyone buying a TV right now should spend a grand or more. This is a good TV for many uses.

I'm saying that if you're buying a TV primarily for HDR then you're completely wasting your money with a TV of this cost right now. Wait for prices to drop over the next few years or spend more.

No offence but this comment makes you sound like a bit of a snob. Are you saying people don't appreciate gaming or HD movies if they buy this? Just enjoy your tv, live and let live etc. Personally AMOLED on phones gives me a headache - not to mention I wouldn't spend 1k on a TV even if it made my dinner for me. I have used the 43" version of this for a few months and took delivery of the 55" one this evening. I really enjoy the picture quality and find the Ambilight feature contributes to the experience of watching a movie. I see no fault with this. If you want to buy an OLED tv or that's your area of interest then this isn't the thread for you.

If you give the TV a good input, it seems to give a decent picture.
So by SD if you mean the tv antenna (and not an HD channnel) then it is as good/as bad as any other TV. Tv's own HD antenna channels are acceptable. Sky HD looks good to me (sports handling included) and xbox (incl. HDR content) looks good and lag isn't apparent in game mode.
4K content (downloads found on Vimeo) on a usb stick is super detailed as expected.
Hope this helps

also helps if you use settings from avforums for the 6501 - they seem to work well .....IMO of course.

I've just bought this 55" model. Been using a 43" one upstairs for half a year now and I'm really happy with it. The software isn't the fastest but I don't mind that so much as I use it mainly with plugged-in media sources, and it's handy having Android OS on it as it gives the option of things like Kodi, Nest etc - even if they aren't as fast as on a phone.

I'm chuffed to bits with the picture but obviously I'm not an expert - I just like what I see. The Ambilight feature is truly immersive and I'm looking forward to watching Planet Earth in 4K on it once it arrives.
EddyH

According to the press event report I saw this TV was always intended to support HDR10, prehaps it just didn't ship with the required software as it wasn't ready for the release date (and probably wasn't considered a priority on a bottom end TV). Here is a one of the slides from the 2016 TV event:

http://content.hwigroup.net/images/articles/philips-tv-2016-line-up-hdr.jpg

I do agree there are better HDR TV's available but these are 2-3+ times the price and still have issues. I couldn't justify that kind of outlay and still have to accept compromises.

10 Mar 17 1 #39
The big differences in HDR support are colour gamut, brightness and local dimming ability. Maybe brightness mapping too. The difference between 8 bit with dithering and 10-bit is tiny and not bothering with.

All a software update can add is the ability to understand HDR content, to reproduce it accurately requires extra hardware.

Plenty of people don't fix what isn't broken. There's no point in swapping out a functioning DVD player for a blu-ray player if all you play is DVDs.

I believe LG Display's OLED panels use only white OLEDs with colour filters in front of them, so that particular problem wouldn't be a concern on an OLED TV.

Bought one of these but had to return it as it was so SLOW. The user interface was very very slow to respond to the remote. For example; pressing the 'Guide' button would take up to 5 seconds to start opening, the just pressing up/down to scroll through the guide would be very slow and irritating. When pressing up/down to scroll, there would be a delay for a couple seconds, so you'd press it again a couple times and it wouldn't respond for another few seconds, then all of a sudden it would scroll though the guide onto the next page really quickly responding to all the previous button presses. That is just the guide as an example, don't even bother with the smart apps like Netflix.

The picture quality was very good in both HD and 4K, didn't use the HDR feature, bright and colourful with plenty of settings so you can tweak it and get it right. Inputs are sufficient and plentiful for the average household. The design is lovely, slim with a tiny silver bezel around the edge, feet are small but sturdy and solid.

The interface is messy and non uniform, things aren't where you'd expect them to be, these aren't nice on my slight OCD, so another reason it had to go back. It seems to run the Android OS through the processor, plus the Philips interface runs though the same processor thus the entire lot becomes laggy. It has to switch between Android, the TV, and the Guide like it has simultaneous OS's running at the same time, or opens them like they're both apps.

Had an older Philips TV just as the Smart features became popular but it wasn't an Android Quad core machine, it was a standard boring Philips built interface, and I've got to say that was terrible also. It was even slower and laggier, harder to use and very messy, which made me loose my faith with Philips. Decided to give them a try with a brand new model, but that's it for me with Philips. Their TV quality has been bad from the beginning and it's not getting better, so I've gone to LG and I'm impressed. I have the Philips Hue 2.0 lightbulb kit which I am again impressed with, so maybe Philips just can't figure out how to make a good TV interface which lets it down for me.

fine, do that.

I own the 55PUS6401 and I can confirm my Xbox One S recognises the TV as HDR 10 and my NVIDIA Shield TV shows it supports 10-bit and 12-bit Rec.2020. The TV changes to HDR mode when it receives a HDR input. It's not a huge difference to SDR due to being only 350nits, however there is a difference. I've not had it long so only tried an episode of The Grand Tour and the first few minutes of Hacksaw Ridge in 4K HDR but both look very good. 1080P material also looks good.

Having previously owned Plasma I don't think any LCD TV's are good enough so I've bought this cheap TV to put me on until OLED is more developed and affordable.

The Ambilight on this TV is a nice feature and does help with perceived black levels when used in either colour changing mode or just as a D65 bias light.

I've not seen any reviews saying the picture is dire but I would be interested to read them.

I've seen conflicting information regarding whether the panel is 10 bit or not as information I found from a Philips press event states that it is.

I also haven't noticed any issues with lag using the TV interface and have read a review of the 6501 which uses the same quad core processor commenting on how nippy it is. According to the Philips support forums an update to android 6 is also imminent.

I have a LG B6 and it **** on anything I've seen picture quality wise OLED is the way forward and it's actually true 10 bit HDR not all these fake 8 bits HDR panels that are around plus you can't beat the pixel responsiveness of oleds and the blacks.

Yeah too many cliches for me. Not a SCART connection in the house, all HDMI. VHS went to the dump years ago.

WHY would anyone want a 4K TV with a SCART connection. Beggars belief IMHO.

MOST people would want a Blu-Ray player that supports 4K through HDMI.

don't care about picture reviews - bunch of nerds waving willies. bought the 49" version myself on a whim about six months back and the picture is fantastic to my eyes. Maybe I should chuck it in the bin though, since the reviews are so dire...

Going to order this for downstairs.

This review on the 6401 series suggests the TV is HDR following a recent firmware update

You're mental.

I bet all them supposedly 4K tellys have analogue tuners in them too. What a cliche.

Picture reviews are dire on this set plus has a laggy interface not the best set,The HDR is misleading as it can accept a HDR signal.but cant process it but for a cheap 55 inch some people will ignore that as you wont get that feature unless ur willing to shell out a lot more

Are you for real SCART is dead, its not even HD let alone 4K. Why have a 4K TV with a non HD SCART Socket. Makes the supposed 4K TV a bit of a cliche with a non HD old fashioned SCART.

Surely everyones SCART connected VHS has died by now.....

So a 10 bit HDR is what I am looking for then? I do a bit of gaming but I could buy this tv and a ps4 pro and have change rather than a KS7000 lol. Think I might hold out...

Seen that, its at the price point of £750 though so i'd say they would review it very differently at £450

Does anyone know how much RAM is in this set? Have tried to Google for the information but no luck. It's mainly so I have an idea of how well it'd perform in terms of apps etc. Thanks!

Closest i've been to upgrading our tv with this deal. Am I better putting the extra money in and getting the Samsung KS7000 for HDR or waiting for an OLED? AAAHHH so many different tvs with different specs!

Can't recommend this TV enough. Have the 49" version when that was on sale 6 months back. The ambilight may sound like a gimmick, but it's really immersive. Added bonus it'll sync with any Hue lights you have in your home.

Whats with the SCART socket, most people won't know what a SCART socket is let alone ever need one.

COLD from me for having a SCART socket.

Perhaps its a special 4K SCART socket?
