60Hz refresh rate is the standard rate for 99% of TV's on the market.

The claims of "100 / 200 / higher" hz are for interpolation rates, but the display is still refreshed at 60Hz.

See my post here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sony-kdl-48wd655-48-full-hd-smart-tv-wi-fi-black-led-tv-2016-model-for-384-99-delivered-2458124?p=28138978

Quite simply, there are very few TFT TVs that can truly do over 60Hz. The few that can do true 120Hz often have small artifacts (Sony X850D for example). The number is minuscule : http://uk.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-usage/pc-monitor/best
That's just for 'true' 120Hz - there are no screens out there that can do 200Hz on a TV, nevermind anything higher. TFT tech just isn't there.

And here is the kicker: Most home users will never touch the settings which allow interpolation of images, because it looks pretty crap to the general user. They have limited use outside of sports and other fast footage.

60Hz isn't "weak" - It's the standard that you want. UK broadcasts are 50Hz. Bluray should be 24p. Nothing else matters for 99% of people.

It's great marketing though.

There is a lot of misconceptions about like 8-bit vs. 10-bit (doesn't matter for panels) and HDR Premium being 'true' HDR.

If you want to understand the HDR Technologies then I found this link to be pretty good:
http://www.lightillusion.com/uhdtv.html

Basically HDR is a new and expensive thing made up of half a dozen different technologies that every TV implements to a different extent. A current top of the range TV will implement some of them fully and some partially and as you go down the range support gets degraded.

It's not like 4K where a TV either has it or doesn't

The most expensive technologies like backlight dimming are the first to get simplified and then removed. When you come to a £400 TV like this all you've got left is the ability to read HDR content with no hardware difference from a non-HDR TV.

If you want something that looks like an HDR demo then you need to add another grand to your budget. The refurbished DX902 at £1200 is an excellent deal. If that's too much then Samsung's KS7000 is often considered a decent entry level model for HDR at £800.

If you want good HDR you either need to wait a few years or buy a high end TV. Spending £400 if you're buying a new TV because of HDR is a waste of time.

All 4K HRD TV's are not the same, basically there's HDR 'premium' with a set of standards they abide by and non premium that can take a HDR signal but not necessarily display it as a true HDR image, this TV is the latter.

bought this TV and it's great. however when watching live football there's a constant annoying flickering which i have no idea how to sort out. i've tried setting the sharpness to 0 but that hasnt solved it unfortunately. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

You didn't read (or failed to understand) what I wrote.

You have NO LEGAL RIGHT to a refund on an item bought in a store unless it's faulty.

Some retailers have a refund policy (you posted the Argos one) - however they're not required to do that and therefore can set whatever rules they like for it (if they chose to exclude Ginger people or items with a Z in the name - they'd be fully within their rights to do that!!)

My point was that you have no legal right to return something bought in a store just because you no longer want it/it's cheaper elsewhere/you found a better deal (you CAN do that with items bought 'at a distance')

I bought this yesterday, after using my Xbox One S in 4K UHD resolution with HDR enabled, i realised a slight flickering on the TV, which didn't appear when using 1080p, after playing around with the TV's setting, i found turning Sharpness to 0 stopped the flickering from appearing, this might help somebody else out too

Had this for going on a year now, paid £340, no regrets. Ambilight works best if you have a wall with colours same - preferably white - ie if it's in a corner like mine then both same colour walls, feature walls tend to detract from its effect. Can't go wrong at this price.

Oh and before you jump on the 'most' point:

PS There are a few things we can’t do returns for, such as food and some jewellery (see FAQ below) unless of course they’re faulty. Naturally, none of this affects your consumer rights.
LoRdPlOps111
31 Mar 17 #138
From Argos website:

Can I return it if there’s nothing wrong with it?

Absolutely! We offer a 30 day returns guarantee on most items. (We’re nice like that.)

So if you need to bring it back, just bring it back. Then we’ll either refund the cash onto the original payment method or offer you an exchange. Easy.
therealjohnpeat
31 Mar 17 #137
Err, no they're not.

You have no legal right to a refund on any item bought in a store UNLESS it's faulty - some stores offer refunds but they're not legally entitled to do that.

You have a right-of-return on goods bought 'at a distance' (Internet, Catalog, Phone or Mail Order) but NOT on anything bought from a retail store (the situation if you order online but collect from a store is a grey area as far as I can determine)

brilliant TV... when the android part is not playing up. Every so often I'll get "Unfortunately *insert ANY android app name here* has stopped working". Press OK to get rid of the message and a few seconds later it pops up again, no amount of rebooting, cache clearing, updating fixes it. It just seems to be random and it'll go away eventually. Apart from that, the picture quality is excellent *for the price*, the connectivity is all you could want and the selection of apps and smarts is 2nd to none. Just hoping one day they release a stable android-tv update for it.
As someone else noted, once you go ambilight you won't go back. Apparently it can link up with Philips Hue bulbs too but I don't have any to test that yet.

I have the 43in version of this because that is the size of the TV cupboard in the bedroom and i could not get any bigger in, but i can tell you, you will not be dissapointed in the 4k, the HDR gaming or the Tv's features, and the same price as my 43in tv, a bargain at that price, compared to the silly prices they want for those 10bit panels.

And for pc gamers the Tv is a utter joy, steam on big scream on 4k (assuming you have the card and cpu), is simply awesome, Alien: Isolation has to be seen in 4k to be believed.

Heat.

I never quite understand the issues people have about Blacks on TV's, maybe I have different eyes and I can see if a screen is filled with black it has a light grey tinge to it. But how often is a screen filled with blacks? I watch this TV in amazement and if someone has a black jumper on it shows as dark black. Its not my usual gaming TV but I plugged in old xbox one to test and was blown away with colours again. Great gaming TV imo.

I got this for about £345 (5% quido offer on top) when last offer was on but this is still great price. Its a bargain even if it was £445. Blown away with the colors on this TV, brilliant for gaming too. Had it for about a month now and me and my wife both still say "look at the picture on that" when watching HD channels. I spent ages reviewing TV's worrying about if I was getting a 10 bit panel as we already had a Philips 4k 43" (non ambi) in lounge which we planned to move to bedroom and have new TV in lounge so wanted an improvement. We ended up with this one in bedroom as test and now don't want to move it so would love another one for lounge as it seems so much better.( i was originally chuffed with 4k 43" Philips but this is another level)

Ambilight is also great, I didn't buy it for that but as others have said I don't think I will buy a TV without one again. Really works well. I was waiting for this to be around £350 again or for offer to come on 55" although I'm not sure if that is too big as this thing is massive. Its amazing the difference between 43" and 49". It looks so much bigger than an extra 6 Inches.

I don't usually comment on Hotdeals but that how good I think this TV is for the money.

Thanks for this, I'll try it when I get home tonight.

Another thing Ill mention is that with this TV is, it is possible to "boot" straight into a App, therefore making it your "Home (button)" app. This is quite useful for Plex/Kodi as a primary front end over Android TV's leanback launcher.

this TV has no black colour - I am so disappointed. Good for playing/watching during day light, but in the evening it is just disaster. My (nearly 8years) sony 32 inches is far better. Apart from this issue everything else is just great - no complaints. Hope this helps

I know what you mean, the studio filmed telly like Ant & Dec prog can look a bit bold and bright, yet soaps etc look fine. I mostly use the day setting, which IIRC the day setting does +2 the magenta, so this may be a factor. Other tvs in the house exhibit similar pq on live studio progs, so it may be down to how they light the studios too/white balance/colour balance ?

Good post.

People getting far too hung up on the HDR thing. If youre on a budget it isnt worth worrying about!

Did you not find the AVForum's 6501 settings a little dark and red for this set?

Philips TV division in Europe is run by TPV who are another display company best known for AOC monitors. They do make a full range of TVs with their higher end models like the PUS7601 and POS901 getting good reviews for picture quality. They're not just a stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap company like Vestel.

I'd be a bit surprised if this model was made by TCL since I thought TPV had enough capacity to make sets for other manufacturers.

If you've got one of the higher quality plasmas then I'd definitely hold off another five years until either full HDR or OLED arrives at this price.

A few years ago manufacturers were marketing 'effective' refresh rates which was the actual images per second multiplied by a made up number based on how much motion processing the TV has. That's mostly stopped now.

nomnom is slightly overstating things when he says there are very few TVs that can do it. All high end TVs tend to be 100/120hz with the occasional 200/240hz. The LG UH770 is a relatively cheap 100/120hz panel for example.

What is rare is the ability to accept a 100hz signal from an external source, but as video is never produced at such a high frame rate that's generally only an issue for PC usage.

As video never goes above 60hz you don't need a fast panel to reproduce it accurately. It can help as it allows more processing, but it's much more about the quality.

This may be quite important for some of you, as a recent ex-owner ... great TV but an important part of it is Android TV(its normal "home screen") , and that just keeps crashing when used frequently(e.g. apps like YouTube) - which means rebooting the TV. I now have Android TV, which I use a lot, on a Mi Box 4K and it's rock solid - also Mi Box has voice activated search through the remote which is very important, Philips remote means typing everything. Philips need to sort out Android stability(unfortunately there have been comments on this issue going back a long time on developer forums).

I went from a 46" Panny Plasma to a 55" OG OLED panel. No regrets at all. Picture better in all areas and it runs cooler and quieter.

My friend has got a Philips 55PUS6401. I was very impressed by it.
Also from what I can see online you can extend Ambilight to HUE lightbulbs.
When more 4k content will be avalible in the UK and I figure out what to reply with to my wife when she asks why we needed a new TV, then the 55PUS6401 most likely would be my choice.

Made by TCL... I'm still on panny GT60 plasma, as I'm not so desperate for 4K but would never consider Philips or Hisense as a replacement... you need to spend much more mate

Are you sure you've got the same model as this one? I've got this exact TV and it didn't come with a keyboard, nor am I experiencing any of the issues you've said in your post. The Android software is lightning quick and has never crashed once.

I'd check your model number with this one, just to be sure, but may even be an issue with your TV as I can't recommend it enough to people.

Is this a proper phillips or a vestel or other product in disguise? Any comparisons with the hisense? Coming from a panny plasma I'm cautious lol!

Bought this TV around January (£~409) and I really don't like it, trying desperately to get rid of it.

Here's my faults with it, some are directed at Android TV and not the hardware.

The ambilight was nice, however I barley notice it now, and think I may even prefer watching TV without it - however it does seem to "bring out" the colours more when viewing. Yes, I realise this is more of an opinion. (It also lacks a wider range of wall colours for the ambilight to be set against)

The Android TV software I'm sure is great on faster setups. However it is infuriating slow on this, and crashes alot.

Laggy transitions between opening apps and even using basic functions like switching sources or accessing the settings menu sometimes works, sometimes takes a good 5 seconds, sometimes just doesn't happen and sometimes the TV just reboots.

The keyboard is extremely annoying, it defaults to google voice, which this TV does not support, and when you switch to the keyboard input and select it, you end up inputing letter q which you have to delete. You also cannot scroll background results while the keyboard is open.

The out of box picture is terrible with over blown colours and contrast. The way to get an acceptable picture is switching to the movie preset and sorting through some settings, which can take quite alot of time as it not possible to "preview" your adjustments on the fly as it stops playback when in the settings menu (if using anything other than live TV). You are also missing any sort of meaningful description for some settings.

Lightbleed in the corners of the TV are bad and obstructs any dark scences.

Any motion on the screen produces blur/tearing, even applying the software options to fix this don't work. This can cause quite alot of strain on the eye, and can become quite irratating.

The majority of 1080p/4K content that is displayed ends up being low fps, even if the source is higher.

The sound is lacking any low range and fails to create any impact with any sound that isn't speech.

In addition to this Amazon 4K UHD is ALWAYS out of sync, and I find it impossible to fix even using the built in in audio offset sliders.

- After a month of having this the Ambilight started flickering. I was in contact with philips support and they said it was a software bug because I updated the TV and didn't delete the old software. I knew it was hardware related because if I tapped the side of the TV it would fix it until a few minutes later it would happen again, suggesting a cable was loose. Philps were adament it was a software problem even after I followed their steps and told them that it was hardware. I ended up taking the TV apart myself and reseating the ribbon cable for one of the LED strips. Seems like I am not the only one with this problem after looking on forums.

Having said all this, this doesn't seem a bad TV for the price. You do get alot of "built" in features for the price, just don't expect it to be in any part quality - apart from the stand.

I've had this TV for 6 months and its great.. Sports look crisp and smooth (In HD) for anybody asking, colours are vivid, blacks are (You guessed it) black.. Everyone keeps going on about HDR bla bla bla.. If you want a 49 inch TV that outputs 4K with a picture that looks great with loads of features for less than £400 you're in the right place. If you don't give a monkeys about refresh rates and how many 'bits' the panel has you will be happy just as i am, watching sports and movies on a lovely screen like any other normal person wants to.

Relax brother, im not flamming your deal, its a great price and i was really thinking about buying one, see my post above. I'm no expert but ive been trying to fnd out the specs on this before purchased. 60hz seemed weak but nomnonnom seems to think it's industry standard
timj13
29 Mar 17 #43
Hmmm interesting, i didn't know that i always thought 200hz is what to be looking out for especially when watching sports as it produced a smoother picture?

Even if I've opened and started using it?

I'm trying to explain to them on chat to simply arrange the £70 refund to save us all the hassle!

Edit: Update, they're sending me £73 by cheque, so happy with that.

Are Argos likely to give me a refund now this has dropped within a couple of days?

You can return the TV to get a refund then buy it again, that's perfectly legal.

You're forgetting that many people, especially on here, only care about being able to tell their neighbours that they have a "4k HDR" TV. Whether they can see it isn't so important. Like having a high megapixel camera, kinda pointless when the lens is crap.

This TV also can't display HDR properly as it only has an 8 bit panel, it's physically impossible for it to do it properly.

Great deal!
Not as cheap as it was on the last Argos TV deal a month ago, it was £359 back then, but right now £386 is the best anywhere.
Here was the last deal

For me 49" is a bit too big for the room, I'm hoping a deal will come up on the 43" model for around £300 ! Then I can sync it with my hue lights

The set I had off them wasn't from an eBay site it was from the local store Merry Hill and was new/unopened. So can't comment on their eBay stuff. The Panasonic sound bar off their site did say refurbished and came in repackaged plain box with about a mile of bubble wrap and all accessories and manuals and was unmarked. luck of the draw when buying anything refurbished but what a saving in price!!

This is an amazing TV and I bit the bullet after seeing it on here from Argos a couple of weeks ago! it replaced an 11 year old panny plasma and it exceeded my expectations for a budget set. I experimented with the settings but couldn't improve on the "out of the box" set up. To my eye the picture was equal to that of the double the price sets claiming the latest 10 bit bla bla ultra stuff!! I just watch standard TV in Old fashion HD. get one if you can.
At this price get a quality sound bar with your change as the speakers aren't great. The one posted a couple of weeks ago here for a refurbished Panasonic was perfect. Incidentally the Ambilight feature on the TV is really good.

The 6401 is 100hz compared to the 6501 which is 200hz

The 6401 has 8gb storage compared to the 6501 which has 16gb storage

Quite abit of difference on the specs, watching sport on a 100hz wouldn't produce the best quality smooth picture im guessing

All 4K HRD TV's are not the same, basically there's HDR 'premium' with a set of standards they abide by and non premium that can take a HDR signal but not necessarily display it as a true HDR image, this TV is the latter.
