Just came across this on Gearbest website, had a quick search and no one else seems to have posted this yet. Very good deal in my opinion, so much cheaper than Philips Hue bulbs.

People in other threads are talking about setting it up with IFTTT (Amazon Echo as well?) and there's also the official app on play store.

I have some of these. I purchased 2 colour ones to try out and was very impressed. For £14 they are spot on. They can be Co trolled by smart phone or by Amazon echo. Very easy to set up. Can choose any colour and brightness and as mentioned above, the scenes are good. I have ordered another 3 to do the other bedrooms and office.

All I need now is to figure out some switches that I can use with them (normal light switches turn off the power completely so wifi then doesn't work) apparently I need aqara switches but £40 each is a bit steep.

For anyone wondering on the features, download the "mi home" or "yeelight" app from Google play or appstore and you can create a pretend light bulb within the app and play around with the controls to see what the bulb would look like and it's features. If anyone wants to see the features before they buy, try that.

if it's anything like the Google home, it's fairly easy using ifttt , but you have to make a scene for every color you want , just time consuming.

There are different delivery options, I normally go for the cheapest and it takes anywhere between 2 weeks to 4 weeks if I recall correctly

21 Mar 17 1 #10
No need for ifttt anymore, the skill has now been approved by amazon.

I have 4 of these, one in each of the bedrooms.

In the Yeelight app, you also get pre set scenes, sunrise, sunset. Great for the kids going to bed.

The sunset scene slowly fades to off
superted2008
21 Mar 17 1 #11
You can also create your own scenes.

To get the echo to set the light to a colour, you save each colour as a scene (name the scene as the colour). Then tell Alexa to turn X room light..then the name of the colour/scene.

21 Mar 17 1 #15
I can't comment on the Hue setup, I haven't seen it in person.

From what I read when I looked into which one to buy was that the Hue setup wins for brightness.

I am more than happy with the brightness of the Yeelights though.

Can they be used as a normal bulb too, ie turn on and off with the light switch?
Or are they ideally used in a separate lamp in the room.

Can imagine the other half getting extremely frustrated if she can't just walk into a room and switch on the light!
garethsmith72 to phil001
22 Mar 17 1 #26
Yes when switched on they start on a bright white, they can then be changed with the app to the various colours. Bought one for a fussy sleeping 9 year old and she loves that the light can be set to lots of different colours. Prices floats around £14.00 as they are converting $ to £, also don't forget the quidco/TCB. Gearbest are one of the better suppliers in my opinion..

I have their LED Strip and was very easy to set up with Echo. Just use the Alexa App to install YeeLight skill set and then in the YeeLight App name the lamp and away you go.

For example, I have the LED Strip mounted behind my TV so I state 'Alexa, turn on TV light' and Alexa turns it on. Easy

Is it a smarthome skill, i.e able to just say turn x light down, or a normal skill ask yeelight to turn down...

Also can you set it to dim to a nightlight in the app, or is it just a pre-defined dim to off?? I have Hue now and find the dim to nightlight great, but wouldn't mind some cheaper bulbs if they do the same?

Unless you plan on living longer than 11 years, which I do!

On a serious note, I'm looking to start getting some WiFi bulbs as I've just started building an alarm clock/MP3 player/internet radio/Bluetooth speaker using a Raspberry Pi and one feature I plan on giving it is to dim the clock screen at night and I was thinking of going one step further and having it bring the room lights on in the morning as well - should help me get up easier on winter mornings! But does anyone know anything about the power consumption of these bulbs? Presumably they consume at least a little bit of power even when they're not on to maintain the WiFi connection.

You clearly know more on the matter than me. a design engineer for a very well regarded company in the field of consumer electronics, a time served electrician by trade and a lifetime of electrical manufacturing, design and testing experience.

I am sure your statement will be of great comfort should a family member or close friend die as a result of using non approved electrical equipment. But at least your insurance still paid out right?

You do however need to work on your grammar and spelling.

23 Mar 17 #84
Thanks, keep working on those.
And well, understand what you are saying. I am on the other hand, have 90% of my house custom made since I was kid (loooong time ago), still alive. I just think about this "norms/regulations" etc. the same think as cars CO2 emmissions...Why something is not safe here while it is safe in the rest of the world? Why you shouldn't merge ground wire with negative one in device plug if there is 2 wire installation in your house? Obviously better not to hold any equipment during power surge then, but you never should do that right? Even if whole installation meets safety standards. It might sounds crazy for you, like I said, I understand that, but just saying, just because I could die during a walk doesn't mean I will stay at home forever or don't let my children go outside
You have really nice experience sir, but what we are doing at work to meet all the standards and please our customers in my opinion is a bit different from what we CAN do in our house as far as we are aware of way it is done/made and we are using our brains on daily basis to protect our home and family

You reply is abysmal in its construction and lack of understanding. Lol

Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately for some of us, judging from your reply). You cannot just do as you like in your own home and should an electrical fault cause damage, injury or worse to someone in it or indeed a neighbour and it is proven to be because of your cheap internet connected light you could very well find yourself liable both financially and possibly criminally. But hey, you saved a few quid. Lol.

26 Mar 17 #102
Mate. it doesn't matter how respectable the brand is if they don't have the required approvals for use in the UK. i simply asked the question right at the very start of this thread and no one has confirmed one way or another. People staying things like "i have several and they work just fine" or "they are a respectable brand" has nothing whatsoever to do with these meeting UK approval or not. personally i wouldn't use them if they didn't have the required approvals hence my original question, in fact if they were approved for UK use i may have even had some myself. However if people are happy to take the risk then they only have themselves to blame IF something goes wrong and damages property or another human being.

Most of it is nonsense anyway - the CE / ROHS standards are more concerned with meeting electrical interference standards and electrical recycling than actual safety.

However, for the pedants, they are listed on several sites as being ROHS and CE certified.

roblatus
29 Mar 17 #115
lol. you clearly can't read, or understand. not sure which to be honest. good entertainment though

"This directive restricts (with exceptions) the use of six hazardous materials in the manufactureof various types of electronic and electrical equipment. It is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive"
me_lee
30 Mar 17 #116
"Insults are the arguments of those who know they are in the wrong."

ROHS and WEEE dovetail. ROHS ensures things are manufactured using safe materials that can be recycled / recovered under WEEE.

Neither ROHS or WEEE are relevant to electrical safety which was the subject of the discussion (I believe electronics starting fires was mentioned). As a design engineer with a well regarded consumer electronics company (by any chance a Junior Design Engineer who started 7 months ago for a company starting with the letter D?) I would have thought you would already know that.

See I can read after all!
