From Motorola direct, this the 3GB RAM model £249 before code and cashback, after using unidays code and topcashback, which makes it cheaper than carphone warehouse at £250 for a 2GB model (it appears that the model sold by CPW may be a 4GB, still not a good deal IMHO).

The student offer via unidays works if you get a code, bring price down to £224.40 and if you track through Top cashback you get £9.40 later, ordered with FREE delivery estimated 11th of April. #UPDATE#: order confirmed and cashback tracked!

Alternatively, if you do not have a Unidays code: UKWELCOME10 makes it £239 + cashback.

Specs include:

Android 7 Nougat stock

Turbo Charging

Sony camera same as Samsung S7: 12 MP, f/1.7, autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash

microSD slot, up to 256 GB

Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625CPU Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53GPU Adreno 506

DISPLAY IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors 5.2 inches 1080 x 1920 pixels (~424 ppi pixel density

I hope that nothing goes wrong with these phones, especially as you are buying directly from Motorola and will have to deal with them if anything goes wrong. Their customer 'service' is abysmal and you won't have a cat in hell's chance of getting a refund after 14 days, even if the phone is faulty.

On this link http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/moto-g5-16gb-sapphire-blue-launch-offer-139-99-o2-2649926 skygrowler reports that CPW advises that the 2GB listing is an error and that their version is actually 4GB. Has anyone ordered the CPW version and can confirm this with evidence? It would be great if this was true because after slating CPW I will take this all back and this thread should change from ice cold to scorching hot if this is the case.
dealcatcherer
1 Apr 17 #43
hey, I sent them an email asking them for clarification about 2 weeks ago, shortly after they listed it... no answer since. I'd like to know as well, that's a huge mistake if it is the case... However even if true, £250 for 4GB model when I get a 3GB model for £215, that's steep especially as difference between 3GB ram and 4GB ram is minimal. Not worth the price difference in my opinion.
dealcatcherer

deanoh11

each to their own in all fairness, I looked up the specs of the P2, it was close between the two, same price than this from three but in my case the camera and a slightly smaller screen was the deciding factor. both great handsets IMHO

people voting against the best deal, because they don't like something and perhaps do not even know why... sooooooo 2016.
noelphobic
3 Apr 17 #54
It's not the product that I dislike - I have had several Motorola mobile phones and I have a Lenovo tablet. It's the fact that the after sales 'support'/customer 'service' is abysmal. I found that out the hard way.
djaydearz
3 Apr 17 1 #55
that's fine, and that's a shame that happened to you, you would have every right to dislike them, never use them again. But that's a personal experience, nothing to do with how hot/cold this deal is.

Its the same as if someone really had a great experience with Motorola, voting hot even if the cost was too high.
noelphobic
3 Apr 17 #56
I take your point but it's not just about price or even value for money. It's no use having what is supposedly a brilliant phone if the retailer/manufacturer will not meet their statutory obligations when things go wrong. Ghost touch is a known issue with Moto G4 and Motorola have treated their customers appallingly. If something similar comes to light with the G5 I would be surprised if they handled it any better.

Motorola is a global company and customers overseas have been treated in an even more disgraceful manner - people in India have been queuing up in service centres, and even if they are 'lucky' enough to get their phones 'repaired', these repairs often fail.

We will have to agree to differ on this one

no1son
3 Apr 17 #59
We got the x play, but one of them started playing up.

We did return it but the customer service was fast and they just informed us that they would be sending us out a new phone, this arrived in 3 days after the return.

I know customer service seems to be hit and miss with a lot of companies now a days, I personally would never buy another LG product every after having 4 years of ongoing problems with some 60" plasma TVs we bought, nothing but a nightmare in my personal case.

This is a cross post, but may be of interest in case you haven't seen the other threads.. The CPW one advertised at 2Gb arrived as a 3Gb XT1684, OEM id: M2670. No mention of the RAM capacity on the packaging, but clearly a 3Gb model. Other details incorrect on CPW website as noted previously - No OIS, just EIS (video) also it states headphones included, which they are not for this model. Hope that clarifies things a bit. Not sure if you would be guaranteed a 3Gb one though, as CPW could in theory have both the 2 and 3 gig variants.

As an aside though, the recent customer service received from CPW has been terrible!

So far 2017 has been utterly crap for smartphones. I'm still waiting for the killer smartphone of 2017 to be released, hint: It's not the S8 with it's default 1080P resolution that you have to manually up to 1440P and then kill your battery, and the fingerprint sensor is in the wrong place, Samsung knows this so everytime you open the camera it says ooh having a clean camera lens is a good idea, because we definitely didn't put the fingerprint sensor in the wrong place and therefore you definitely not gone and smudged the lens, so we don't have to remind you but we did because we definitely did bodge this phone. The S8 a 2017 bodged effort.

Really mean of Motorola (aka Lenovo) to not offer a 4GB RAM / 64GB ROM version of the G5+ in the UK when they had done so for the G4+

A step back in my opinion, hence cold.

64GB ROM should be the minimum storage nowadays, even for mid range phones.

Motorola gone downhill since Lenovo taken over.

Don't expect fast updates anymore either like the good old Motorola days.
noelphobic
6 Apr 17 #84
No I haven't posted any deals, and that is remiss of me, but I don't think it justifies personal insults. It's not much of an excuse but I'm not brilliant on computers and don't know how to do it. I will have a go next time I see anything I consider to be a good deal - and I won't be rude to anyone who disagrees, unless they're rude to me first - and I haven't been rude to anyone.

What I have done quite a few times over the years is to give people advice on consumer rights, having worked in a Citizens' Advice Bureau, and I know this has been appreciated.

My main problem with Motorola is the fact that they consistently refuse to honour their legal obligations under the Consumer Rights Act and people should be made aware of that.
dealcatcherer
6 Apr 17 #85
well that is your opinion, 32gb with expendable storage is More than enough for 100 apps and OS, the rest such as documents and photos can be stored on expendable storage directly. This is a midrange phone made after intensive work with customer feedback to see what they expected for a decent price, if you want more you need to pay more or go to the competition.

Motorola has not gone downhill, however they joined the rest of the queue in terms of updates once sold off by Google, that is normal and not uncommon for any midrange phone. If you don't like feel free to buy something else.

As I've said previously, it's not just about the price as far as I'm concerned, it's also about after sales support. It's hardly 'sad'. I'm entitled to vote as I see fit and hardly think me voting 'cold', means 'a lot of people may have missed this'.

You may not agree but my opinion is as valid as anyone elses and I won't apologise for that.

I hear the P2 is buggy and camera is really bad, battery is huge but makes the phone heavy. with the G5 plus I get 2 days worth of battery, the turbo charging is quite amazing, 1 hour to go from 20% to over 90… the bottom button navigation is really nice, frees up some space and get used to it so fast. I had it for a week and find it hard to find anything I don't like so far...

17 Apr 17 #131
How do you find the speaker volume for calls/ringing volume and the speaker phone? I've seen some reviews say that it's quiet especially compared to the p2, I'm trying to decide between the two and leaning more towards this although the speaker does worry me as I use speaker phone a lot.

17 Apr 17 #132
huh the speaker is fine, I am not deaf, it has only one on top so it's not dobly surround but I have it on halfway in terms of sound and it is more than enough for me... don't know if that helps much, perhaps they have it in store at carphone warehouse so you can check it in person?
awoo
17 Apr 17 #133
Thanks for your reply I will go and see if they have it in there then, I'm sure it's probably fine but I've just seen it mentioned a few times in reviews so made me wonder.
dealcatcherer
17 Apr 17 #134
i find the reviews quite unhelpful a lot of fan boys of said company or of a flagship 3 times the price. this people have expectations created by owning the top technology and also get paid (advertising if not directly) by the companies... this a medium phone, compromise between price and performance, more than able to accommodate the needs for most users who need a phone/browser/camera.

Where do you insert the Unidays code?
dealcatcherer

where you put the other codes... in the basket, there is a box.

I don't think you will find many to give out UNiDAYS codes anymore as they are now banning accounts for this reason

I've managed to purchase one!!!

Should I get a micro SD and use as adoptive storage? I've never used an sd card before.
dealcatcherer
18 Apr 17 #143
yeah you should, I have an old 32gb SD card micro in there, I store the photos in there (you need to set that up on the settings) along with music and dowloads, with 32gb on the phone itself and despite nougat and all my apps I still have over 20gb of native storage!
dealcatcherer
18 Apr 17 #144
I think the important part is to not take any offer more than once or twice, otherwise you get flagged... and then banned I guess. but if you ask one student, friend of a friend, if you use contacts I am sure you can find someone eventually.
mobily
18 Apr 17 #145
Thanks, do you setup the card as portable storage or adoptive storage?
dealcatcherer
18 Apr 17 1 #146
just looked and by default it is set as portable, my SD card is old, adaptative seem to mean that phone becomes reliant on it so not keen.

18 Apr 17 #148
Interesting. Without wishing to get too technical, I presume you can setup the phone so that photos and videos will automatically save to the SD card rather than internal memory and also downloaded films?
dealcatcherer
18 Apr 17 #149
yes, that's standard on android, for the camera you just go in menu of camera and you can choose, same thing for dowloads and then music and other... in many ways people should keep the internal storage clean of any such files, more spare memory equates to better working phone/computers in general...

Hi.

I'm interested in buying this phone but like others have some reservations around the lack of compass.

When I'm on foot using Google Maps for navigation the phone being able to highlight the direction you are facing is really useful. For those that own the phone can you confirm whether this feature still works without a compass (maybe using cell towers or GPS)?

Thanks in advance.

As I understand it, it will work but you'll need to walk a few seconds for the phone to work out the direction you are facing.

19 Apr 17 #155
i bought a cheap one with glass screen protector off eBay for £2.50 delivered, I've put the link earlier in this thread, I tend to wait before commenting to a proper one as prices drop fast and then got a good idea what is best...

Ordered on Saturday 15th April with delivery for Friday 21st April, now delivery isn't until Tuesday 25th April due to missing the Fedex cut off. 10 day delivery is a bit much but I guess for £218 delivered I shouldn't complain too much!
dealcatcherer

19 Apr 17 #158
What's the screen like, I've read some reviews where they say it's a bit dull? Also, how are you finding the camera?
dealcatcherer
19 Apr 17 #159
screen is absolutely great, I use the adaptive brightness mode, I'm no fan of overly bright screens so I have it deemed. the camera is really amazing in details, I don't think they even have developed the software to fully take advantage of it's capability and I hope they will upgrade this to reach the standard on the S7 or will download an app to augment it, i posted a deal today using the camera to make a macro shot of a very small item... very detailed and true colours. Like I said before i do not see what the reviews have to complain about, I tried the S7 and found minimal difference with what is in my hands right now and I prefer the smaller price and the very light Motorola enhancement adds on top of the OS... I waited a long time for this phone and it really delivers for a minimum premium. hope you like it too when you get it, got mine one day earlier by the way, delivery is estimated.
mobily
19 Apr 17 #160
Thanks for the detail, sounds promising! I'm away next week so not sure where FedEx will put the package!

What's the sound like from the speaker and also when using headphones?
dealcatcherer
19 Apr 17 #161
only one speaker so not the best, sound out of the jack in my Sony headphones is amazing... good enough for me anyhow...
mobily
19 Apr 17 #162
It was the speaker that put me off a bit but I guess we can't expect everything at this price point!

Got mine today from India, as earlier stated in an earlier post it appears the UK version is the same as the Indian version as it has a dual sim drawer. SD card slots into the other side. mine came with 4GB of RAM. Great phone .well worth the £206 pounds paid.
mobily
21 Apr 17 #164
How did you get yours from India? A 4gb RAM edition would be very welcome.

I work with many guys working over here from India, this is now my 3rd Indian moto. I started with the Moto g, then Moto G3, now G5 plus. All are dual SIM, and they got better each time.I just asked them to purchase when over there.

Very nice, I'd be interested to read your thoughts in the phone when you've had a chance to play with it. Such as brightness of the screen and effect of no compass etc.
Zeb
22 Apr 17 #167
True or false, no compass means no Google Sky Map orientation, no making 360 photos in Google street view and messing up Sat Nav directions?
mr_deals
22 Apr 17 #168
I can not answer the google sky one but I downloaded street view, created a 360 photo and I was able to view on my phone by just moving the phone to see the whole 360 image. Quite cool actually. I never knew you could do that. Also in street view you can switch to theVR and view through a VR headset and as you look around and up and down the image moves too. Google maps is used daily and never suffers. So I don't think this lack of compass is not so bad.

Myunidays code doesn't work on the G5 PLUS. It does on other models. Anyone had a similar problem?
rcfc87
22 Apr 17 #170
Yeah I'm having the same problem - I'm going to try a new code later on - its a bummer if they've stopped the code because the T&Cs on unidays says its for all models....

I am unable to use the unidays code too. But I cannot seem to get it to work for anything at all on the website, not even accessories!

Has anyone been successful in using the discount recently?
rcfc87
27 Apr 17 #174
Tried again today - no success sorry! Im gonna give them a call tomorrow
Batman101
27 Apr 17 1 #175
I just checked the terms and conditions on the unidays website, and I see it's been updated

"Motorola Education Pricing is available to verified UNiDAYS members only. The discount entitles a student to a saving of 10% on a single transaction off full price items, Limited Edition and concession items only (offer excludes accessories, permanently reduced and promotional items). Promotional codes cannot be redeemed during an online reduced price promotion duration. 10% discount is not applicable on G5 and G5 plus."

I am going to try and contact Motorola though, as even if I don't get the unidays code to work the actual moto website keeps telling me with adverts that I can get the G5 plus with "UKWELCOME10" and it isn't letting me...
