Totally agree..the G5 is quite a disappointment. It's just an ordinary phone and little better than the old Moto G apart from having 4G

Congratulations, only £1.99 to invalidate your guarantee..Why not buy it sim free on pricematch from John Lewis for slightly more but with a 2 year guarantee, which we may all need if it's anything like the G4 with the ghost touch problem as part of the features!

just bought this, had the 3rd gen... skipped the 4th gen, too big. v5 is very good so far, love the touch id..
im on 3 mobile, the guy in the o2 shop amusingly told me the phone was locked to 02 and couldn't be unlocked for 12 months  i said, ok mate... 20 minutes later and £1.99 on ebay, the phone was unlocked.. i guess he was hoping to get me to join 02... anyway, great phone, and this is the best price around,.....

Go to settings, then sound. There is an option to switch off the power up sound.

I've had the G5 for a few days for review purposes. I'm not particularly impressed with it to be honest. The build quality on mine is quite poor (the plastic back cover creaks when pressure is applied), and I really hate the fake chrome screen surround which is very Samsung circa 2013-2014. The screen is awful outdoors and is a fingerprint magnet, much more so than the previous G4 series probably because it no longer uses Gorilla Glass, even the 'G4 Play' was better in that regard.

The sound quality and maximum volume is very poor from the front facing speaker, definitely a downgrade from the G4 series, and G3 (G2 was the high point). The battery life has been absolutely atrocious for me, not even making it to 9PM before requiring a charge. Performance has also been quite choppy in some apps like twitter, where it sometimes freezes or refuses to scroll for 3-5 seconds. I have also noticed the top part of the handset becoming almost hot to touch, even when not doing anything particularly demanding.

I didn't like the G4 when it was released last year, as I found it too large compared to the G3, so I was looking forward to the G5. I'm very disappointed though, The G5 is where I expected the Moto E series should have been by 2017. The G5 Plus is probably the real successor to the G4, but it's considerably more expensive. The G5 definitely a low point for the Moto G series IMO.

info: Welcome to O2. Someone will be with you soon.
info: You're through to 'Ango'
Ango: Hi I'm Ango. How can I help?
Daniel: Hi, will a GiffGaff sim work in a locked O2 phone?
Ango:Yes It'll surely work.
Daniel: Ok because I went into your Stratford upon Avon shop today about to buy a new phone and the member of staff said it definitely would'nt
Ango:Daniel, GiffGaff uses O2 network so O2 phone will work with it.

5 Apr 17 1 #177
The tiny battery on the XA would rule it out for me. Thats going to be 2hrs screen on time max.
My experience of having a phone with a smaller than necessary battery (Moto X 2) was that it was a vicious cycle; battery needs to be fully discharged to get a day's usage, battery loses capacity, further deep discharges..
My current phone is an S7, that lasts a 1.5 days of light use or 1 day of heavy usage, and I'm normally charging up at 40/50% at the end of the day.

Genuine question as lost the ability to decide so would like peoples opinion, is it worth paying the extra £40 for the Amazon 3GB version, £110 more for the 3GB G5 Plus from Motorola or go with this?

customer services ! if you look on the website it also says OIS this is not true and it says earphones included but someone said they are not . it seems the best bet is to go toCW and check yourself what version you are getting because CW don't seem to know ???
also Moto website only mentions a 3gb version !!
i would also point out that i and they were talking about the G5 plus !

The XA has a 2Ghz Octocore processor so it has some oomph on paper and the 720p screen should mean less battery drain. I was wondering whether that makes them fairly even or whether the G5 is significantly better value

The Moto G5 is loads better than that.. the XA got bad reviews when it was released.. ages ago.
The G5 is full HD for a start. XA has a crappy mediatek chipset, vs the G5s snapdragon.
The G5 has a bigger battery too.. although 2800mAh isn't massive considering the size of the screen.

John Lewis pricematched laptops direct straight away. No messing around with potentially unlocking O2's offering. It's interesting that giffgaffs site says their sims work in phones locked to O2 but O2 says not. Who's right??

Reserved a Moto over the phone at a local O2 shop and they wouldn't sell the phone unless I paid £10 for a sim. I walked out the shop ordered my phone through O2 via topcashback and not only did I get the phone for £139.99 but my cash back tracked at £2.80, so I ended up paying £137.19.
dave7
4 Apr 17 #158
Staff in O2 shop told me it's locked to O2 and won't work with a Giffgaff SIM unless unlocked. John Lewis won't price match because it's a different colour and is locked to O2. Presently awaiting price match to Laptops Direct (Thanks Macro Duck!)

Not sure, but the answer came from 2 different sources. I think its enough for me to either go into store and look at physical device/box or just order from Motorola direct if I choose the plus, still not sure if go this with a view to replacing sooner or the extra monies and get the Plus or the P2

Can you get this price direct in store? (as on their site it's asking for UK postcode which must match bank address - my bank is in France - and so therefore I can't purchase online.)
Finally - if I do purchase in store is the £10 top-up obligatory?

As an owner of a Moto G4 i wouldn't get this or another Lenovo phone.

I get the odd ghosting particuarly when the phone is quite hot - it gets tedious very quickly.

3000 mAh isn't enough and this one has a 2800 mAh battery, battery life is improved slightly with Nougat but not much.

Performance is mediocre at best, some of the larger apps i have are just painfully slow to load...

Camera is ok at best.

16 GB memory is no where near enough these days when you take into consideration i have 10.8 GB available due to Android taking up such a massive amount.

Build quality leaves a lot to be desired, the other day my power button ending up popping out of place (luckily into my pocket so i managed to pop it back into place).

I would honestly spend more money on something better or consider a Chinese import as they have better specs for the same or less money.

Have you quoted the Consumer Rights' Act to John Lewis? They are talking rubbish when they tell you to take it up with Motorola - your contract is with the retailer, NOT the manufacturer. I know from bitter experience that Motorola are awful to deal with.

Did you pay by credit card? If so, you can make a Section 75 claim.

http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/section-75-of-the-consumer-credit-act

As far as the charging issue is concerned, have you tried it with different chargers? My Motorola charger stopped working but the phone would charge with different chargers - a moot point really, when the ghost touch rendered it unusable!

2 Apr 17 #114
I am shocked to read this as I've always thought John Lewis had a good reputation. I always advise people against buying Motorola products as I've had such a horrendous experience with my G4, but I did buy directly from them and had to deal with them, rather than a third party retailer.

After a few months had that ghosting thing, my phone would go crazy and start ringing people, doing things, read up its a known fault, on another forum they said to get it changed. JL suggested i go to motorola. Now it doesn't charge at all, the battery didn't last long, i re-calibrated it.. lasted a bit longer, but now won't charge at all. I'm done with it, I'm gonna send it to get a few pennies to one of these phone places.
saying that, i've just ordered g5 from amazon, in the past had a phone stop working once off amazon after 5mnths, no quibble, straight swap or money back.
poisondwarf
2 Apr 17 1 #111

Hardware wise, the G5 is better in all departments. It will also have stock Android against a bloated Samsung so it wins in the software department too. No brainer

iPhone 6 Plus - Touch IC / Touch Disease fault
iPhone 5/5S/6 - U2 IC charging problem due to using non Apple chargers, thing is non genuine chargers work fine on most Android phones, so no excuse there Apple.

Some people are equally sick of Apple, especially when they don't fix their design flaws. They know the 6 Plus has a design flaw as they moved the Touch IC from the mainboard to the screen for the 6S Plus. Also Apple will NOT supply any 3rd party with genuine parts so you have to fix Apple phones with non genuine parts or strip genuine parts from a broken phone.

Is there a compulsory top-up required, or can you just select a £10 bundle to go with it but not go ahead with it? I'm on giffgaff and want to stay on giffgaff, so hopefully wouldn't need to unlock phone.
TheHun6
30 Mar 17 #45
Very tempting price even with just 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. This deal makes the Amazon one look expensive because their 2GB version is £169.99. If Amazon were to price match, then the 3GB version should be sold at £149.99 to remain proportionate and competitive. It also makes the Carphone Warehouse Moto G Plus with a paltry 2GB RAM look ridiculously expensive at £249.99. The price differential between the standard G5 and the G5 plus is too great. It places the former in the budget price range, but the latter in the mid price range at almost double the price!
PiloTT
30 Mar 17 2 #44
I have just received the 3GB RAM version from Amazon...had it almost a week now and very impressed...it looks good, feels good, and is pretty quick with virtually no lag. I would certainly recommend. Big improvement on the G4 and I prefer the slightly smaller overall size. Hot fro me!

They can say that but anyone that has owned a few MotoGs will know the difference in the product since Lenovo took over their phone division. I blindly bought each one based on the 1st buy. I'd have loved to have been able to stick with the G4 & now the G5 but they aren't the same family any more
diddydavro
30 Mar 17 #41
That seems a good reason to criticise Lenovo but this is what the Motorola website says "All mobile phones are designed and manufactured by Motorola Mobility LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lenovo". In any case I've ordered the 3gb/16gb, dual SIM version which is exclusive to Amazon and look forward to getting it tomorrow.

This or the p2
alexus to leemg3
30 Mar 17 #38
It's quite a big jump in price to be fair. The spec comparison on the P2 is below. £70 extra for a better screen, bigger battery, faster processor, faster wifi, 32gb memory 4gb ram. It's due an update to android 7 from April. Has some bugs maybe they will fix with update. I dropped a new phone 3 days in just before my case arrived and my insurance has credited me £145 so considering options. Am on an older Moto play and really want an upgrade

Funny enough that's the latest phone I am eyeing up lenovo p2 on pay-as-you-go at 3 for £210. Want to see in person. It's looking like that or pay the extra for Moto Z. I see what your saying raggedy. If I was only wanting text and browsing little you say, I'd expect to pay no more than £100. I picked up the Huawei P9 Lite just before Christmas for £140 and the Wileyfox Swift 2 Plus at £150 was available only a few weeks ago. Both these phones have 3GB of RAM.

2GB RAM will be fine for now but down the line, it will be an issue, (and be the excuse they give for not updating it.)

You are buying from O2 Pay as you go webpage- of course it is locked to o2 and comes with o2 sim card- how could it be "sim free"? Sometimes they sell refurbs unlocked already, but usually even those are locked to o2 ( you still can use their locked phones with GiffGaff or Tesco Mobile sim)
