Moto G4 16GB, 2GB RAM, Black, unlocked - £139 delivered @ John Lewis (2 year guarantee)

Note - this is not the 1GB Play version.

I’ve been waiting for this to hit around the £130ish mark again, and I’ve bitten at £139, which includes John Lewis’ 2 year warranty. Motorola only offer a year's warranty, and even though you technically have legal rights for up to 6 years (5 years for Scotland), I can't imagine Motorola are going to make it easy.

Comparing the specs and reviews to the G5, I think this is the better value for money.

Don’t forget reward coins from Quidco!

Update - it’s just been dropped to the same price (£139) at Amazon.

Fair few of these just are non-issues.
Battery is what it is, that might be an issue.
Instructions - just google it Mate. Anything you need to know is a click away.
Cases? Add ons? Get it online. Easy to research, cheaper and arrives on your door.
Google Music? If you don't like it, use a different music app.
SD cards? I just got a 128gb SD card from Amazon for £30. At least this phone lets you put in an SD card (Apple, I'm glaring at you).

Consumers don't have to think for one moment about what the shady manufacturers want them to do.
Which is exactly why the contract being with the retailer, not the manufacturer is the important aspect to be aware of!
Amazon, for example, are doing their best to b.s. people that they only have 30 days to return even faulty products (FFS!). Which is practically criminal (as denying customers their statutory rights is a criminal offence, not just a civil contract breach).
This is why I won't buy any products that are "Sold By: [manufacturer name here, e.g. 'Anker'] and Fulfilled by Amazon. Why do you think Amazon don't just bulk-buy then resell themselves like for everything else?
High fault rate and cost of returns is probably why. Sold by = contract with, so Amazon can wash their hands of any problems, whilst taking a cut. The companies selling them aren't British, typically, thus hard to prosecute if they do refuse to give the minimum legal rights.
Thus, John Lewis, whilst being far more ethical than Amazon, do have to deal with this up to six years after purchase, not 12 months nor 24, let alone 30 days! Like 100% of UK retailers, legal minimum! Many idiots appear not to understand what the law means. Ridiculous, when for once, it's a law on the common man's side, you know? Sooooo much disinformation on these legal minimum rights. Sooooo many people just lying down, bending over, rolling over and taking it in the rear from these liars. It's a major part of their business model to save costs. But that's not the consumer's problem. So stop paying for poor business models and management inability to make money without breaking the law. Look around, it's happening all over these days. Making a genuine deal that much more difficult to check for validity. It's all wasted time for the consumer, a lot of cumulative hassle, and all that time is unpaid - and time is money. Make it their time and money instead. Cheers.

I bought the white model from John Lewis last October, kind of wished I had spent more money on something else. The battery life is not all that good even when `Battery Saver` is switched on.
Google Music keep messing all the albums I downloaded up, i.e. if a track on an album is by multiple artists it will separate it from that album and list it as a separate album, even though I can alter it in iTunes on my computer, Google music will not recognise it as part of that album.
Also there is no little warning light on the phone like on previous Sony Xperia models I have had, that indicates when you have a text message, phone message etc. Really annoying!
I am also finding it difficult to find a decent phone case in the shops because most retailers are selling more iPhones or Samsung models, so they don't stock such items.
I can keep going if you wish. I have been onto Motorola customer support many times with regards to how to operate the phone. I am not technology illiterate as I am an ICT/Computing teacher, but the supplied and down loadable operational manual is appalling, and that it putting it politely..
One other thing. If you get a phone with Android 6 then you will probably want to increase the storage capacity. Android 6 takes up over 5GB of storage space, and I have just had the Android 7 upgrade which was an additional 240MB, so if you go for this phone I suggest you invest in an external memory card as 16GB will not be enough!

There are loads of Motorola G4 cases on ebay select highest price first to eliminate the cheaper ones. I bought a leather black book type one for about £10 and a Hard Case protector type for £4 which are surprisingly good quality.

I think maybe because the 2GB version of the G5 doesn’t seem to be an ‘upgrade’ from the G4 (and I’d prefer the larger screen of the G4). I’d be tempted with the 3GB version, but not at the price it’s at right now. The 2GB G5 still looks good though.

having had the G3 i find the battery life is much better (even with a dual sim) and the TurboCharge option does make a difference, but i think most smartphones are too clever for their own good, which is why i now take a portable charger with me if i'm going to be out all day. as for Nougat, no issues with the update and a few extra features seem useful. as for GoogleMusic and a phone case, these not an issue with the phone itself, just personal preference/ gripe that are easily solved
there isn't much difference between the G4 and G5 unless you got the 3GB RAM version exclusive to Amazon

If anyone gets this and has 'ghost touch' issues then return it immediately. I would never buy another Motorola because of the issues I had with them, having made the mistake of buying the G4 directly from Motorola.

Thanks for the heads up about this (same to stevemona). I’m really glad I’ve got the 2 year JL guarantee should this happen. I was very tempted to get a Chinese import (a lot more for your money) - namely the Lenovo ZUK Z2. But doubts about a credible warranty system is one of the things that put me off (that and the risk of malware that I might not be able to get rid of, or even detect, without some hassle).

Motorola/Leno have a policy of a possible upgrade, eg, Android 6 to Android 7 for current models. There won't be an Android 8 as a natural progression. Buy a new 'phone.

I have a Motorola G3, very capable, other than battery life. I got an upgrade from Android 5 to Android 6. Motorola/Lenovo have said they have no plans to upgrade to Android 7. If I want the Android 7 I would need to buy another 'phone. So now I am looking at upgrade policies for other manufacturers. Motorola can do better.
WhiteGoose
29 Mar 17 #21
That’s all good, but after 6 months the onus is on the consumer to prove that the fault was due to a defect in the product. This may involve having to seek a third party expert opinion, which still might be rejected by the seller. I guess your next option would be to then seek a legal claim against the seller. What consumer has time for all of this? I think it makes it pretty useless for all but the most dedicated, particularly when the value of the product is relatively low.

Im surprised people are finding the batteyr life of the G3 an issue, however im not a power user. After being off charge since 7:30 this morning at this moment in time (23:10) it is showing 47%, screen on time shows just over an hour on the battery monitor.

I still find the phone bigger then id like (coming from a nexus 4) and wish more manufacturers made a 4.5-4.7 screened phone.

Be aware that none of the Moto G4/5 variants have a magnetometer/compass sensor like the G3. I'd love to upgrade my G3 but the lack of this feature is a no-no for me. Need it to orientate maps when stationary.

This phone is brilliant, until the dreaded ghost touch hits! It's quite disabling to having a useable phone, currently having mine repaired and not optimistic that this will fix the issue. Motorola customer service is substandard and without a concrete fix for the ghost touch issue, best to avoid and consider another phone.

I picked this exact phone up (as in Black, 2Gb, Sim free) for £135 today. Argos Ebay are doing a 10% off deal at the moment, they have the Moto G4 as one of their items. £150 - 10%, and I picked it up from the local Argos a few minutes after I'd ordered it.

I can post an Ebay item number but I don't know if it's allowed? The 10% voucher code is on Argos's Ebay page.

Edit: It also makes returning it easier, if this 'ghost touch' appears.

The price has now gone up to £149.95, so I’m going to expire this. However, you can still get it for £139 at Amazon, and for about £135 with the 10% Argos Ebay deal if the click and collect option on their Ebay store is functional for your area (it’s just not working for any North East England store) (add a little more if you want home delivery).

That's nothing to do with the phone (it'll do the same on every phone, both Android & Apple), that's to do with the Google Music app. It uses the metadata in the mp3 to strucutre files. I recommend using something like MP3Tag to ensure they're correct prior to uploading. HTH.

I almost bought one fore my wife, she loved her G2 or G3 that she had but research shows lots and lots of problems with Motorola since Lenovo took over building them.
I researched extensively and decided to go for the similar priced Samsung Galaxy J5, http://www.samsung.com/uk/smartphones/galaxy-j5-j500fn/SM-J500FZKABTU/, which is now her favorite ever phone.
Take care and read customer support/comments on all phones before buying and realise that everyone has a chance to be unlucky.

Good luck!
P.S. I bought the Samsung via Hotdeals/e2Save/ O2 link, 1Gb, unlim, unlim and it costs around £15 pm including the phone - cheap. (p.s. she doesn't use any data)

Motorola don't have a 'credible' warranty, which is one of the reasons I always advise against buying directly from them. The worst company I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. Reading posts on their forum they are treating customers in other countries even more disgracefully, notably India.
noelphobic
30 Mar 17 #39
It is as though a ghost has taken over your phone. It opens and closes apps and websites, makes phone calls (which could potentially be embarrassing) and starts to write texts, although it doesn't usually go as far as sending them. While all this is going on the phone is unusable, which is a real concern in an emergency.

Some people report that this is only happening while the phone is charging, which would be annoying but manageable. Others like myself find it happens seemingly randomly, whether or not it is charging and with no rhyme or reason.

I'd had my phone for about 3 months when this first started happening, others have reported it as happening straight out of the box.

I bought directly from Motorola so my contract was with them unfortunately. They have blatantly refused to acknowledge or honour their obligations under the Consumer Rights' Act, hence why I always warn people not to buy from them. They appear to have a policy of only giving refunds under the 14 day 'cooling off' period. As you say, the only real hope of getting them to honour their legal obligations is to take court action.

Good spot. It’s worth keeping an eye out for any reductions on the JL website as well as from any of their “high street competitors”. We have 28 days from the date of purchase. I’ll post anything here if I find a price drop below £139. My Moto G4 arrived a few days ago. Very impressed with it so far, though it takes an age to charge the 3,000mAh battery. I might purchase a quick charger from Amazon.

Ghost touch is like the phone having a mind of it's own. Basically it's a screen sensor fault caused by cheap components or where they have designed the sensor too close to a component that gets hot and causes it to malfunction. Basically the screen thinks you are pressing it and can end up opening up applications randomly or getting in the way while you are using apps. It's very very annoying and gradually gets worse once it starts to the point the phone becomes unusable until you turn it off and let it cool down.

Quick charge works with both the G4 and G4 Plus. It's just they don't include the turbo charger in the G4 box like they do with the Plus.
