my elite still going strong and i played it so so much when i was time rich youth :smile: ...ps3 i played uncharted and the odd blu ray and that bloody thing yellow lighted on me! that's the only console I've ever had die. i think it was jealous
i'd be very worried about the RROD on these models, saying that theres a 12 month warranty plus its 35 quid at the end of the day.

These not the worst ones to fail - the Xbox 360 was released in 2005; the Elite model wasn't released until 2007 and was discontinued in 2010 when the slim version was released. So the older models, from 2005-07, with the original motherboards (Xenon - no HDMI ports) are more likely to fail. All Elites have HDMI ports, which means they'll have either Zephyr, Falcon or Jasper motherboards, with each one being less likely to fail than the last.
All that said, if an Xbox 360 hasn't had RROD before now, and it's been thoroughly tested, it's probably safe.
Just off the top of my head, I think Zephyrs came in around early-mid 2007, whenever the HDMI port was introduced, as they're basically Xenons with HDMI ports added. Then Falcons came in around mid-late 2007 and Jaspers were late 2008 until the slims came along in mid 2010. There's also the Opus board, which is a Falcon without the HDMI port, designed to fit in old cases to replace Xenon motherboards in refurbished units, so you'll only see those in consoles Microsoft have repaired.
So yes, Jaspers were around for longer, so presumably more were manufactured. You do still see plenty of Falcons but they were nowhere near as bad as the Xenons and presumably the faulty ones have been weeded out after 10 years.

yeh my spring went too but i couldn't be bothered to fix it. i find the 360 just gets slower and slower at booting over time but that aside it's still going strong! i had an early elite and that RROD'd but Microsoft took it away and gave me another so no complaints really. that was many many years ago now.

Hahaha
Raspberry Pi would be okay, the emulators are fine but couple of minor annoyances with some textures & stuff but completely playable. Original hardware is always more satisfying though imo and since you can just burn CD-R disks that work straight away on any Dreamcast it's actually pretty awesome thing to have. Plus there's an official VGA cable that ups the resolution slightly and means you can use a monitor.
Cheap bit of fun for some nostalgia anyway

Haha, yeah, I've got one in the garage - it won't fit in the house. :stuck_out_tongue: Never had a Dreamcast but I feel that's the way to go for Shenmue. As I said, I'm trying to get it running on a Raspberry Pi - if it works, I might get a USB Dreamcast controller or adapter; if it doesn't work I might just get a Dreamcast!

New XBox 360 controllers cost about £20 wired, or £23 wireless online (so not quite the £34.99 of this bundle). Wired can cost from around £16.62 instore if you can find them.
I have found secondhand controllers to be a bit of a miss - maybe a (the A) button is a bit dodgy, or the built-in battery doesn't work (and can't be revived). For me, I'd go new every time.

Blimey YES. Having said that you can play RDR on the new Xbone.
For anyone who's never got into gaming, getting an old 360 must be the bargain of the decade. Theres a whole world of games out there for peanuts at say CEX which are still amazing.

The S models were a redesign, they put the CPU and GPU on one dye, and put on a massive cooler on it. the RROD was not an issue on the S models, and not just because MS removed the Red LED's from the power button.
I'd still recommend paying that little bit extra for the S model over the Elite, as someone who owned multiple Xbox 360's and only suffered the RROD on my launch console and that was down to me opening it up to replace the fans, and thermal paste. The reduction in noise levels alone is worth the extra.

Why not just get an original Xbox to play it? Or yeah, get a Dreamcast and that way you'll be able to play the first Shenmue as well. I'm hoping there will be some sort of re-release of the first two games before the third one, but it's not looking likely. Otherwise I'll be trying to play them through an emulator on my Raspberry Pi.
Between April and September 2007.
JTAG and RGH are two different methods of doing the same thing. If the dash is 7371 or less you can JTAG it, which is the easier method. Later versions can still be RGH'ed, right up to 15572 and slightly beyond for certain, but possibly even right up to the latest (most of the information on it is out of date, pretty sure I've RGH'ed one on 17489, which was 18 months ago) but that's more complicated, requiring a glitch chip, and your success rate and boot speed will vary depending on chip used, installation used and your particular board.
The chances of finding a JTAG-able Jasper are slim - Jaspers started being made in September 2008 and 7371 came along in April 2009, so you've got about a 6 month window there, but then you'd have to find one that hadn't been updated - and considering that updates are included on game discs as well as online, you'd have to find one that hadn't been played at all for more than 6 months, which is highly unlikely. Even JTAG-able Falcons are rare (that's the best I've ever found); JTAG-able Jaspers are gold dust. JTAG-ing is preferable, but you'll usually have to settle for RGH if you want a console with HDMI. Both methods require soldering a NAND programmer anyway, so if you're going to/able to do that you might as well throw a glitch chip in there as well.
Not holding my breath anything will happen though yeah

The Zephyr was only a stop-gap board really. I don't think they even had a year in manufacture. They just needed to use all the surplus xenon size chips.

if the power supply is 150 watts 12.1 amp then you have a Jasper v1 (nov 2008) or v2 (2 sept 2009) and if the dashboard is on less 2.0.7371 or less you can Jtag it or RGH it. I got the Resident Evil Jasper Jtag and been running fine for donkeys.

Jasper chip elites should be fine. Had mine for probably about 4-5 years at least and never had a problem. Never had a RROD on my original 360 either, that ended up with a dodgey laser, which i replaced for about £8 and its still going strong.

Absolutely, if you can afford a slim get one, but I doubt there's many of the dodgy boards left out there. I'd imagine you're more likely to get a Jasper at this point by virtue of the failure rate being so much lower.

31 Mar 17#16
It really depends how much a newer "slim" model would cost you. If you only want to play the occasional thing this is a good price, but I had many an issue with these elites and the older models. Only one I have left that hasn't had some sort of issue is an Arcade model. Struggles to read discs but they work eventually if you open and close the tray enough times

The elite didn't come in until the 'falcon' board revision. Still prone to RROD, but nowhere near as common. The majority of elites in the wild will 'jasper' units which don't really get it at all.

I also got a RROD with my Xbox 360 120GB Elite - the only games console I've ever owned that broke :disappointed: It was just out of warranty, so I replaced it with an Xbox 360 250GB S because I still owned a bunch of Xbox games that I wanted to finish. I never had any problems with it, but the S got a lot less use than the Elite, so it's hard to say whether that saved it from getting a RROD.
